  • Step back! It's about to get messy! In this episode, Hair Color Chemist Valerie Patton (@thelahobo) and I make a new friend... and a turn a salon upside down explaining the science behind permanent hair dye.
What you don’t know won’t hurt you...or at least that’s what some manufacturers of NATURAL, ORGANIC & AMMONIA-FREE permanent hair dyes' seem to think! In this video, Hair Color Chemist Valerie Patton (Follower her on Twitter @thelahobo ) & I expose NATURAL, ORGANIC & AMMONIA FREE hair dyes' DIRTY LITTLE SECRET. We'll help you understand what it means to be a natural hair dye & identify an offending ingredient so you can snuff it out of your hair coloring routine!

    Notes/Errors/Omissions:
*Like your computer, I occasionally spit out an error. Yes, I occasionally make mistakes, but when I do, I will correct them here.
CORRECTION - 00:42 I say an alkalizing agent "opens" the cuticle. This many have conjured visions of hair strands opening and closing like venetian blinds and that's definitely not what they do.
A more appropriate wording would be to say alkalizing agents SWELL OR CONTRACT the cuticle. When an acidic conditioner is used to terminate the hair dying process, the swollen cuticle contracts and returns to its normal state.
