It feels good to be making videos again. I learned so much by creating this vid. One surprise I learned - that hard surface disinfectant wipes like Clorox- you have to use enough wipes that the surface is visibly wet and treat it for 4 minutes! How many of us just wipe down the counter, get annoyed that it's wet, and then wipe it with a paper towel instead of waiting for it to dry? I figured sharing this information might help more than just me :)

Thanks for the tips... you mentioned at the end that most people don't apply it properly. I wish you had shown the proper application!! Ciao from Italy, L

Hi Laura! I appreciate the feedback. Next time I do a fail video, I will also share how things should be done. When using hand sanitizer you want to cover the entire surface of the hand, then rub together till hands are dry -- about 20 seconds or so. Don't wipe the hand sanitizer off before it's dry. Time matters and wiping the sanitizer off too soon might not effectively kill germs.

Loved the video and good to see your staying safe :). With hand sanitizer the do the dead bacteria and viruses just stay on your skin after since your not really washing with anything? Also are the microbes still dangerous in that state since I great technically the virus isn't really alive?

Not MsB, but dead is dead. I can't imagine it would be much more dangerous than dead skin. I think of sanitizer as something to use when I'm out and about. Once I get home, soap, water and a rinse is the way to go.

Good to hear from you! Coronavirus isn't washed away with water like when using soap. After using hand sanitizer on the skin, the virus still remains. High concentrations of alcohol inactivate the virus via 2 mechanisms. First, it dissolves the protective fatty coating that helps the virus invade cells. Second, it inactivates the viral RNA. True, the viruses will remain on your hands, but they are no longer a threat because they're essentially "dismantled" or "nonfunctional".

Thank you Claudia! My hope is that it would help people keep and eye out and avoid bad hand sanitizer. Seriously, I do not want COVID-19 to keep spreading! Now, I've been getting messages about how everyone has dry hands, so I think my next one is going to be related to that. How to keep hands healthy and happy while washing them a 100x a day :)

I'm guilty of using Clorox wipes to clean my hands! Albeit I try to limit the cases to a bare minimum. Unfortunately, where I live, alcohol-based hand sanitizer is constantly sold out, same with the wipes. I had to "recycle" them (wash and re-soak in diluted bleach).
My local supermarket at least is trying to keep us safe and provides sanitizing gel across the store. But I noticed theirs is very oily and doesn't smell much of alcohol. My question is how one can, with some degree of confidence, know the mix meets the minimum recommended level of 60% alcohol. I try the sniff test after rubbing it on my hands. I don't want to lit a match to test, LOL
Related to above, I noticed the hand sanitizer also expires, as the alcohol evaporates. Do you happen to know which push down gel dispensers will retain most of the alcohol over time?

It’s okay, we all make mistakes! It took me a while to perfect the art of sanitizing hands as well! Hand sanitizer shortages are a real thing, we’re experiencing that here too. Just know that soap and water are just as effective, if not better than hand sanitizer.
In response to your question, hand sanitizers are over-the-counter drugs. This means they must list the active ingredient on the back label. If you look for example at the back of a bottle of Target Up and Up Hand Sanitizer you’ll see -- ACTIVE INGREDIENT Ethyl Alcohol 70%. That’s how you know. It’s easier than a sniff test or lighting yourself on fire ;) I don’t know which gel dispensers retain the most alcohol over time. If I see anything related to that in my digging I will let you know. Thanks for say hi! If you have any other questions, let me know!

    Welcome back to the YubTubs!
I guess Hollywood's trope of pouring some whiskey on my wounds to disinfect my wounds is dead too! There goes my plan for the apocalypse. On a more serious note: I'm using a lot of hand sanitizer lately, and it's drying out my skin. So I use more moisturizer. Which I then end up putting hand sanitizer on top of. Do you happen to know if there are any negative interactions between hand sanitizer and moisturizer (Aveeno)? Am i making a cringeworthy hand sanitizer fail here?

Unless it's Everclear, Then no HAHA. Thank you for the warm welcome back. Good news -- you're cringe-free :D Using moisturizer when skin gets dry will make your skin feel better and help keep out bacteria. There are no interactions between hand sanitizer and moisturizer as far as I know. The alcohol evaporates and you're left with the other ingredients like humectants to prevent your skin from drying out (aloe vera, glycerin) or make it more of a gel consistency (Polyacrylates). You're doing the right thing, so keep-on keepin' on!

I know! Sorry. COVID-19 has been a formidable opponent. I didn't get infected, but I had my life turned upside-down by it. It took me a bit to bounce back. Thanks for being here when I did come back online ❤️
