  • Mercury poisoning from skin lightening cream? It can and DID happen to one woman, and she is now comatose in a hospital bed. WTF was methylmercury doing in her face cream anyway? Today’s video is a cautionary tale about the risks of some skin lightening products, the cosmetic science behind how these beauty products can hurt you, and how you can avoid those risks.

That's interesting, I had no idea! Is the issue of mercury in cosmetics only an issue in skin lightening products? Or is it there in other types of products as well?

Is there a home test that could
Be used to test mercury in skin care products?

I am keeping myself as light as possible, but it is not only vintage aestetic but mostly sun protection. Though I tried few times to lighten my hands that get the most sun exposure with rest of juiced lemon, just to try match them with rest of the body better. :-D
I am opposed in general to skin lightening, I am pro keeping skin as light as possible if it is your jam. But this needs to go hand in hand with change in narative around perception of darker skin, which whatever ban on lightening products will not solve. :(

So many thoughts! Forgive me in advance if all comes out a little incoherent. I totally agree with you about changing the narrative around the perception of darker skin. I worked in India for a year and even in my own Latinx community, I grew up hearing grandmothers praise a grandchild for being "guerita" or light-skinned. If you have darker skin, I can only imagine what that does to your sense of worth. The history of skin lightening is complicated at best.

Also, I want to point out that not all skin lightening ingredients are toxic like mercury. Many are safe and effective with medical supervision (I think this is very key because many people get these ingredients from the internet and use with no supervision) and aren't used to lighten overall complexion, but to lighten dark spots and blemishes that can make people feel self-conscious. So we want to have these products around. But making sure people use safe products is an issue.

Also, watch out for the lemon juice on skin. Their acidity can be unkind to skin and some lemons, have furanocoumarins that can lead to awful burns. See vid here: ua-cam.com/video/8PRubgeFsaA/v-deo.html.

@@Msbeautyphile I agree with you on all points no matter the order :) The lightening products should stay there to help with specific reasons, but mostly when I hear about lightening products, it is not for that noble reason, so I almost want to say that anything regardless how dangerous it is, should stay for noble reasons under specific condition. :)
I should have also put disclaimer on my lemon story :-D I just smeared it over back side of palm of my hands few times while doing lemonade or something and always indoors. So I would guess that it has mostly mental effect at best/I never left it on for long I promise. Great video!

    A minor nitpick
CH3HgCl knocks off the copper ions
It binds covalently to the sulfur atom in the enzyme that would normally ionic bond the copper

Thank you Ken! I had always heard about how mercury was put into skin lightening creams, but it was always unclear to me on how it worked because not a lot of people explain it. I had to really dig into the chem/biochem to get answers. The video took me longer to make but it also felt really rewarding because I knew I was sharing information where there wasn't a lot online. I'll be sharing some of the info that didn't make it to the video in my Instagram stories if you want to check there. There was too much to get into 1 vid :)

Well for us south east asians, I think we all agree that ASIAN women with darker skin just look ugly....
But of course, it looks good on latinas/tanned white people.
I'm just judging my own race.
Whenever I see a dark skin Asian woman, I be like, "I don't want to look like them."
But of course, my skin can't be as white as I want because it's naturally brown.
I just want to keep it as "natural" as possible.
I don't want to be like super dark,
