  • Is the high performance power plan worth turning or or should you just stay on the balanced plan? I've had a few people criticize my recommendation on using the high performance power plan. So I decided I wanted to test it and see if they are right. my findings are actually quite surprising.

    Thankyou for this, it answers a few things that caused me to scratch my head a bit regarding my new win11 gaming laptop, the MSI Alpha17CV, it has a Ryzen9 7945HX cpu , from the factory it only came with a single power plan which is 'Balanced' which I thought was odd - as every previous laptop came with multiple plans, being an intel only user for decades and not having owned an AMD system since Socket A was a thing, I left it as is, as I wasnt sure if this was an AMD querk or not or if there would be any detrimental effects for the hardware if I went down the route of manually inserting a new plan, - but it still boosts over 5.5 ghz using balanced. Star Citizen runs buttery smooth on it too..

      Laptops are a unique beast as they are almost always power and thermal limited, so even switching to the High Performance Power plan may not make any difference (as the system's main issue is that it's almost always bouncing off a power or thermal limit). For a well-cooled desktop however, the gains are noticeable and sometimes fairly substantial. In general, Balanced is the way to go on a laptop if you're looking maximize performance, and Power Saving is suitable for un-plugged, on-the-go, use.

    You're not wrong. You're just not right... I am just giving you the business. There's no "right" nor "wrong" answer. It comes down to someone's needs and preferences. Everyone is different. For example, in my case, I use Powershell to add "Ultimate Performance" and then I make an adjustment to "Disabled Power Throttling" WinAero Tweaker makes that easy to do. This ensures that I get the most power out of my P.C. which I need in my case.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 місяці тому +1

      Hard drives always park when they're not in use. The default position for the heads is off the platters unless they're being accessed. The high performance and ultimate power plans both disabled power management on hard drives. If you're running ssds then it's unnoticeable but if you're running a spinning disc you might use a little bit more power.

    Could you make video/benchmarks about HPET (High Precision Event Timer) disabled vs enabled in the latest windows 11 build, please?
    There is a lot different opinions about this topic on the internet.
    Some people say it significantly improves system latency, mouse and keyboard input, FPS + 0.1%/1% lows.
    Other say, that disabling it decreases performance and system stability + any time based measurement like FPS counter or latency counter will be inaccurate because system timer is desynced.
    Most posts and articles about HPET are a bit outdated with older hardware and OS so it would be nice see results with something more recent.

    2:20 While that setting is indeed set to 60% for balanced plan I'm not sure it is actually having any impact, at least in my experience with my Ryzen 5800x on Windows 10 21H1 with latest chipset drivers. My CPU boosts 4.45 GHz for all cores and 4.7 GHz for single core for both the balanced and high performance plans, so this setting is having zero impact to my boost clocks despite the plans having a setting value (I verified balanced is set to 60 with the explorer program). Different generation or Intel CPUs, different versions of Windows or different chipset drivers may cause it to behave differently but to me this setting seems to be having no effect on my actual boost clocks.

    • @WSS_the_OG
      @WSS_the_OG 2 місяці тому +1

      There is a slight latency to un-park a car (takes a few cycles), so that's the benefit, no latency for the core to go back into an active state. As to how much of a difference this makes will be application specific. If the app is constantly parking / un-parking cores during a given workload, there will be a penalty. However, if the app is constantly saturating all threads (something like tile-based renderer for example), the difference probably won't even be measurable since the cores never have an opportunity to park themselves while the app is processing.

  • @whmxtra
    @whmxtra 2 місяці тому +1

    Your comment at 2:30 (ish) is incorrect. Claiming that the balanced power plan won't let you boost to your full potential is incorrect, my CPU (also a ryzen 5) is stock 3.6 Ghz and the max boost speed is 4.2 Ghz and on the balanced plan it boosts all the way up to the 4.2 whenever it needs to (and sometimes when it doesn't lol). So changing the power plan won't actually change the max boost speed as you're not limited to 60% like you claim on the balanced plan. Unless you're possibly running an older power plan that was glitchy as AMD has messed it up a couple times. But if you've been updating your chipset drivers every now and then the power plan should be updated to one that allows full boost regardless of what plan you set it to.
    You're statement about the minimum processor state being zero on the balanced plan is also incorrect, it's (default) 99%. I'm guessing the program you used to compare the power plans was faulty or had old information. There is very little difference between balanced and performance plans nowadays, mostly in terms of powering down drives and USB devices etc, there is little to no value in using 1 plan over the other as they are virtually identical nowadays except for the drive stuff etc which can be adjusted regardless of what plan you are on, but there's no real difference in terms of the CPU and how it is handled.
    Even your own benchmarks show no real difference other than a higher 1% low, which really isn't relevant since the odd time it'll drop that low is literally 1% of the time you're playing, so maybe a couple seconds out of a few hours of gameplay, you probably wouldn't notice if you didn't have the FPS on the screen. Every other benchmark is within the margin of error so essentially you only proved that the plans are pretty much the same so it really doesn't matter which one you use.
    The latency issue is because on the high performance plan everything basically stays at 100% while on the balanced plan the system is constantly checking for things it can dial the power down on and that causes a slight delay sometimes (half a millisecond or so). But adjusting the balanced plan a bit would take care of that and still save some power usage.

They are called lows for a reason, the literal definition of a 1% low is that's the lowest framerate you get 1% of the time you are playing. But please do explain your point of view, like I said, I'm not a huge gamer so maybe I'm overlooking something here. But my original comments still stand, the increases gained are basically within the margin of error so pretty much irrelevant in terms of noticeable performance overall.

    I use both balanced power plan and High Performance, the difference is that I set the balanced max cpu setting to 99% with this I lose 10 to 15C on the cpu and when gaming it clocks nay on max speed. I use the High Performance when I want continues max power.

    The results may and probably vary between different CPU:s (Intel/AMD) and different generation CPU:s significantly.
    AND the difference also depends on the version of Windows. It was not many years ago that the difference (tested) was non existent (inside the margin of error).

    i hope someone can answer, windows basicly has 3 diffrent power option first it nvidia u can choose between 3 option then comes. Power plant also 3 option and then on top there, windows settings -> Power and there are 3 option what are the best settings now ?

    Balanced plan sets minimum processor state to 5%, not 0% by default. I'm on Intel so maybe that's the difference? And setting both min and max to 100% locks my CPU clock speed at its highest boost, without any throttling. So I'm confused why you claim this is not the case. I'm watching task manager right now and if I switch to Balanced, my CPU speed will drop when activity drops, but on High Performance it stays at its highest speed regardless.

    Use the Bitsum High Performance power plan. Unlike the built in ones on windows (including ultimate), the Bitsum one keeps the cpu cores unparked. Good for gaming

    Honestly what High performance helped me with is that process in task manager that takes me like 20-25% that takes a while after you restart windows 11
    I don't remember the name, but that worked way faster on my 1135g7 laptop

    high performance on my rig doesnt stop the 11400 from being at 4398 mhz all the time. changing min processor state on high performance does nothing to change the clocks in hwinfo/hwmonitor or in taskmanager. balanced does let the cpu drop down to around 800mhz... but i worry from what you said it means i cant get to max clock when gaming? yet on balanced it seems to get to 4389 mhz at least. and i dont want my cores parked ever, under any circumstances. what i need is more options to turn off core parking, and high performance plan to acknowledge min processor state setting (its currently overridden by a registry setting Processor energy performance preference policy: set to 0 it prefers max performance)

    The performance gains really don't seem worth it if energy consumption is high on the list of priorities, so useful to show this.
    As for the 0.1% lows, I don't understand why something that is only 1000th of the gameplay time would be of any practical use.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 місяці тому +1

      Because average frame rate doesn't account for times where the frame dips really low.
      If you're playing a game and it seems to play fine most of the time but it hesitates and stutters occasionally, the 1% and .1% low is how you measure that. The closer you can get the 1% low to the average frame rate the smoother the game play is. It's just an indication of less dips in frame rate.
      For instance I would rather have a 100 FPS average frame rate and a 90fps 1% low then a 300 FPS average frame rate and a 90fps 1% low.
      The point is to get the average frame rate and the 1% low as close together as possible.

    You are correct on Win 11 power modes: 'Best Performance' instead of Balance or Best battery life. When I had it on 'Balance' my usb TV tuner adaptors disconnect automatically. (I thought faulty hardware or driver... After 'trial and error' with those modes; Best performance stops those frequent auto usb disconnects. Thank you for posting that video a few weeks ago - you saved me!!! (I never knew of those modes specifically in Windows 11 before). 🫨

    Ooh! Ooh! I wanna know all about your SOLAR SETUP! Using less power than you produce, even with all your nifty toys, is of EXTREME interest to me! Please?

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 місяці тому +1

      It cost me around 40k. It was actually pretty ridiculous. However, typically when you get solar they account for 5% over your typical usage and with mine I had them build it 20% over my typical usage so I wouldn't have to worry about an electric bill again and I am not what you would consider someone who conserves power. I run my AC all summer long and half the time all the lights are on in my house.
      The only thing I didn't do that I wish I would have is batteries. I may upgrade it later.
