- Open Mind- Magic Potion
The Open Mind, a British Freakbeat/Psych band from London are probably most noted for the now legendary track Magic Potion which appeared as a single and later on their much sought after debut album on Philips in 1969. Fortunately this album was re-released on Antar (ANTAR 2) in 1986 and this has made this classic piece of 60s Freakbeat much more accessible to collectors of 60s psychedelia.
I LOVE THIS MUSIC ❤ SOME ONE IN 2024 HERE ??
The kolonel is…and lovin’ the vibes!!
I'm riding the giant albatross.
It's 2024?
...Here I am, from Florence, Italy!
FOREVER!!!
this song has all the elements that make up a great psychedelic rocker
That's True bro, you're right 😊🎉
I cant imagine how wonderful was to live in the year 1968 with all this music and atmosphere, wish I could experience that !
Agreed. Grew up in the 70's and while there were great songs also nothing compares to the 60's songs. Especially the crap on the radio today.
so much shit happened so fast between 1966 and 1970 its taken 50 years to put it all back together, and we still missing some details
If you lived in England or another country I'm sure it would have slightly better than here in the US..Unfortunately alot of teenagers here were drafted into the war at this time.
As a mature adult, chances are you were listening to more easy listening music.
Not to say adult-contemporary music from this time was bad..
Just not as fun as the big bands of the 30's & 40's..
Big bands are amazing. All the way up to the 70s . I have seen a few big bands but they are such a rarity, obviously the cost. Impossible to recreate the sheer power of a big band through speakers
The video deserves the Cecil B. DeMille award for outstanding cinematography. It's a perfect match with the music. Those British hippies looked like they were having the time of their lives. One sip of the magic potion will open your mind. I want a barrel of that potion. This is hard and heavy British psych at its best. They were a.k.a. the Drag Set
From the UK or the US or any other country, this is one of the best psych songs of 1969.

An Orange Barrel Tab.
One of the best songs ever. It really changed my life. Hearing it was a sonic revelation.
Killer Guitar sound... Mind numbing vocals & lyrics... Great Tune!!
And the DOUBLE BASS :D goddamn!
Great guitars, 100 % spychedelic, and of course 1969 is simply the best year! Yeah listen it again & again!!
1967 was the best.
THIS IS GREAT!
1965 - 1975 RULES!! It's was the time of music
seconded!
Song gets 10/10. Video gets 11/10.
I grew up in 1960's..You gotta love them 60's chicks & the music
I wish I could like and like and like this tune - it has almost everything I love about garage psych - fuzz, rolling drums, gravelly vocals and the context of the tune. Winner every time. xxx
30 yrs ago i was in a band and we covered this we split up , now we are back together and gonna cover this again IT KICKS bigtime what a song
RIP Michael Brancaccio (Uncle Mick) your memory will live on for ever through your amazing music x
How have I never seen anyone bring this up when talking about proto metal? 1:46 - 2:19 is metal as hell! First time hearing this and I absolutely love it
I could see some proto metal elements thrown in with 60 psychedelic Rock
yeah well its a cool riff but Jimi hendrix killed it with his proto metal. Go find a song called Third Stone from The Sun. Hendrix invented metal
From what I've read this is the first time a double bass peddle was recorded. The video does not disappoint.
@@syndicateofsurf1367Sounds like black flag
sound just like the Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog"
BEST SONG EVER!!! Love this song, it's my Friday afternoon drive home song, just absolutely amazing, thanks for upload and awesome video, far out man!!!
This is what Jefferson Airplane should have sounded like later instead of morphing into just another commercial enterprise in a strip mall
Hear hear
I have no idea what those last 6 words are supposed to mean. I know what those words mean individually. But...
I agree! I hate the way Jefferson Airplane turned into Jefferson Starship and sounded so commercial
Magic potion is my fav song and Jefferson airplane is my fav band(greatest feed😬). I always tell people “I like the airplane, not the starship!”
They turned into what the universe intended them to, brother. They helped some future bands realize not to go down the path they went down, and that's a beautiful thing heart ❤
"Magic Potion" is a masterpiece! One year later BLACK SABBATH'S "Paranoid" was released, which has similarities with "Magic Potion".
Try listening to this and then following it with "Brainstorm" by Hawkwind - Nik Turner must have heard this song somewhere back in time...
if I made a list of my favorite psychedelic slash garage rock songs this would definitely be in my top 10
I JUST WANT TO SAY: ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡MUSIC REAL¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ TRANSPORTS ME TO THAT TIME AND WITHOUT DRUGS. I BELIEVE THAT I LIVED IN THAT TIME, IN ANOTHER LIFE.
Any video featuring Bridget Bardot and "Blow-Up" with some kickass psychedelia is dope with me!
“Brigitte” ;)
Absolutely!
I find the period 67-70 musically fascinating. The musical evolution from pysch to heavy psych to proto metal is a musical oddysey worthy of a week-long playlist.
It's funny to see Soviet cartoon clips in here: Alice in Wonderland and Just you wait! (dogs singing)
Such amazing tune, ....the beginning of heavy rock!
Groove is in the heart. Reminds me of The Creation, big time. That can't be bad. What a track.
Take a drink from my magic potion
Do you gonna really feel fine
One zip and you will see
Things you never saw befoooore
-How do you feel?
-I feel fine!
-How do you feel?
-I feel fine!
Help prop my soul I feel fine!
All of a sudden there's a different world
Appearing in front of my eyes
If you don't wanna try this potion
Leave it all for meeee
-How do you feel?
-I feel fine!
-How do you feel?
-I feel fine!
Help prop my soul I feel fine!
Take a drink from my magic potion
Tell me do you still feel fine?
One zip and you will see
Things you never saw befoooore
-How do you feel?
-I feel fine!
-How do you feel?
-Ooh I feel fine!
Help prop my soul I feel fine!
I thought it was "upon my soul I feel fine". Also I hear "One sip"...
A burst of pure energy, well ahead of its time.
Whoever made this video knew what they were doing.
This is the most sixties song ever
I LOVE THIS!!!!!! The editing and choices are unbelievable! First heard this tune on Rhino's Nuggets II British box! And yes, the Euro Nico/Marianne/Patti Boyd look is still a turn on to this 46 year young cat!!!
This song predates the sick sound of the Stooges to come....garage melts into psychedelia melts into the darkest night❤️
No it doesn't. The Stooges had already put their first album out by this point. Fun House would come out not long after this.
@@monsieurlaguillotine3481 he means fun house the first one was more avant-garde
@@monsieurlaguillotine3481 wow...anyways i'm sure that the Open Mind guys' were not aware of that.....I mean, seminal punk rock was clearly urging as a source of inspiration in those times ,both in the States (MC5) and in the UK (Deviants and Pink Fairies,a little bit later).
May I say, a video WORTHY of the song!
Love the ladies of the 60s...
Vengo del futuro y hubo covid
Love the double bass at the end. Proto metal stuff
right on!!!!! Amazing stuff
+WickedTornado What's you up to there Wicked ? I do remember seeing Baker playing with two pedals, unbelievable, talk about keeping a beat. Very impressive, I sometimes forget which is the gas and which is the brake, throw in a clutch and I'm totally forked !
Sara G. I
Man I was born 30-40 years too late the 60s must have been a blast
+Joe Pilsl
The 60s were NOTHING like this video. believe me.
Not only soviet version of "Alice in Wonderland". In this clip is fragment of soviet animation film "Well, Just You Wait!" ("Ну, погоди!"). Just copy and place it on search window of the You.Tube: Детская песенка - У попа была собака. And You'll see it.
Jeff Williams maybe it wasn't for you. You weren't at Woodstock clearly.
Depends on where you WERE in the 60s. I lived in Southern California and was in Haight Ashbury in 67 and 68. And oh yeah it was this and everything more.
I woulda loved to live the 60s just like this for a short while...then come back in time. I think I would miss having my UA-cam..and ebay
Kinda strange been born in 2000 but feeling this music belongs to me in certain way maybe at my past life, or two past lifes back when maybe I was high hearing this and never wake up in that occasion haha.
Heard this many times tripping my brains out. Great group for LSD.
1969 acid was in with the psychedelia!Vietnam War raging on!
How much I love this song! Top of British psychedelia? Hi from Hungary!
Great video! goes perfectly with the feel & sound of the song.
1:45 this part gives me the chills
Fantastic song but what a wonderful video too!! thanks marmalade75
Main riff is somewhat Stooges-like, clearly a good thing.
Good call.
especially at 1:59 and after
i wanna be your dog
I feel like flying on that magic carpet and like a time machine transport me back to the late 60s.
I have seen this video almost 50 times...
What a great video...reminds me of my early 70's acid trips.
You know as mu h as acid was used, heroin was evan a bigger problem truogh out the 50s,60s, and early 70s then cocaine took over for awhile along wgith disco.
Evan though I was quite young in 69(12yrs. old) I vividly remember the 60s , especially from 63 to 72 were some radical times
I LOVED THIS BAND FOR YEARS!!!!!!
Nice to find out this video!!
Yooooooo this song is absolutely great. Sounds very influential on doom metal, what a banger and ahead of its time. Thanks for sharing good music and love ❤️❤️
Now this is music.
Fantastic track - great production and band
Superb job editing the video! Everything blends so well with the track. Loved the french new wave clips!
A masterpiece. Great era around '67 - this captures the vibe. Lot's of "little purple pills" around LA, SF and London "axis". Took a while for the rest of the world to catch up. But it was too late.
The world have definitely lost the chance to experience it in that era
Amazing sound for it's time. Wonderful track.
R.I.P Mickey (Mike Brancaccio) thanks for the music
Nice psych song
Greetz from mars my dears brothers
+Dario Scotti Welcome to the Earth, just remember to obey all interplanetary space vehicle speed limits.
Looks like it was just a more colorful period. What I see of the 60s was a time with hardly any restrictions the music was much better and the vehicles from that era rocked as well
There were definitely restrictions. Artists had to get creative in order to bypass them.
I was 7 when this song was released. But watching this video kind of makes me wish I was born 15 years earlier.
AHHHHHHHHHHH....... those WERE the days. Groovy man !!
migod I love psychedelic garage rock from the 60s.
OH WOW!Spliff up and chill.BRILLIANT
Excellent song, with a 'You really got me' riff going on....This could have been done by Hawkwind too, it has that feel about it.
Two insane guitarists playing insanely....
I would LOVE to see footage of these guys!
This song is such an unknown classic!
Lucky enuf to have a boot of this LP,and that is a treasure ,so hard to find.
I don't know how I got to this video. But I love it.
Just when I thought I knew most of the songs and groups like this. Still discovering these gems...thank u
This sounds like a reference to drinking DMT---Ken Kesey's "rocket fuel" ("one sip and you will see--things you never saw before"). The Open Mind didn't try to hide anything---one of the most obvious drug references in a song ever. Also, being on the Philips label, makers of fine light bulbs, they were label mates of Blue Cheer.
DMT's not orally active, most smoke it.
Dig the double bass!
this video is absolutely the greatest thing E-V-E-R!!!! ohhh myyyy gooooood!
This video is awesome!
Its has everything of the 60's! :D Some of the cartoons remind me of Yellow Submarine!
This is it. Captures it. I was there.
Amazing video and song. Very cool! Bring back the 60s please!!!!!!!!
Killer tune. Smashing viddy
Oh Man! Cool song, video goes great with the song. Wish I had been around during the sixties, what a time!
Timeless tune, and very nice artcut.
Unbelievable video ..awesome song thanks
I love the irony of this song... When the singer says "I feel fine" the music goes to a heavier direction and when he says "Help prop my soul I feel fine!" the music just goes darker, gloomier and heavier.
Excellent job with the video!!
The riff and drum at 1:46 is the best part.
...Ending with that brilliant drum bit at 2:04. Fantastic track.
Someone put a lot of work into this video. I recognized several of the clips and they all originated from different sources. Nicely done. Killer tune too!
👍me remontan a mi adolescencia 👏👏
Great Tune. I never laid my ears on this psychedelic song way back in the 60's and this one just made it in. Possibly the message was a little too strong at the time to be played on the A M airwaves then but, it certainly would prove successful on the music charts in my opinion. Here is the real "Magic Carpet Ride".....Truly Trippy Thanks.
The soul of the 60's stoned great music !!!
Oh those 60’s girls!
Go go girls, Twiggy
( Gloria Steinem???)
Artistic and historic video !
Thanks for posting ! :)
The *Best song* from LP
Amazing video clip 😎
Groovy!
Kick ass. My life has meant nothing until now. I'm leaving the wife and kids and I've left the house on foot to go find myself. I mixed some shit up from the garage into a "magic potion" but it isn't doing much. I think I'm going to have to find a drug dealer
Hahahahahajahahah!
Wtf
and this song is why the 60s were the greatest
Great tune ! Very trippy.
Peace & Love✌😎
This is terrific!
Someone must have been sleeping on the job for this not to have been a massive hit at the time.
(Superb accompanying video, too.)
Revived by The Bevis Frond - they did it as their encore last night (Sept 2023).
TOTALLY AWESOME VIDEO FOOTAGE.
The inclusion of Profesor Baltazar was an inspired choice. That series took all its visual cues from psychedelic art.
Awesome song.......& a very cool video to go along with it, well done!!
Superb!!!!
Been trying to find this song.....big thanks.....subscribed. great visuals too
That drum beat at the end is the cherry on top
This is unreal, great footage.
Any video that has a clip from Jamie and the Magic Torch gets my vote. Nice tune too!
and Veruschka, Audrey Hepburn, Marianne Faithfull..... it's kind of overwhelmingly great!!
need some MG Roadsters or motorcycles or car footage somewhere...
Ahhhh to have been a teen in London in those times!
What a killer track! Outlawed
Fantastic band from Putney,U.K. I used to live close in Clapham.
I like the eye movements. Great psych tune.
Great Sound. Tight and Fuzzy. Grungy and Crunchy. Wish i could go back every once in awhile but this is as close as it gets. Just before Zep and Black Sabbath Changed Acid PSYCHE into Heavy Metal.
