This has to be the best intro to a song and/or album i have ever heard. And also, Meshuggah is without a doubt the most all around talented band in metal.
You guys, this song is absolutely 4/4 the whole way through. What obscures this is that the band accents the "and" of 4, and doesn't play 1, so your brain wants to put the 1 an eighth note early. In other sections, like before and during the guitar solo, they also add more accents that make it even more difficult to put the 1 in the right spot. Look up "The secret behind Meshuggah's COMBUSTION" on YT and it should help make things clearer.
I personally found this to be one of their simpler songs. I always thought that it's 4/4 but the drums play "on downbeat" (or accenting the "and as +Elias Simon said).
its so funny to hear people say that the crowd is boring. I've been to a couple of Meshuggah's shows, and its not that the crowd sucks, they're just SO DAMN mesmerized but the show that most people just glare in amazement. yes theres still moshing and headbanging, but the general population in the crowd is just absorbing it all. O_O
This is probably the most straight-forward song on the Obzen.. Was it ever a single? I discovered them late and have Obzen,,, Still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing but it helps me branch out of my conformed box when I play guitar... The rhythms are insane and I love how every guitar riff has a kick drum behind it giving it more punch! That must take forever to practice and get down! No a huge fan of the vocals, but over all a killer band!
I haven't listened to any metal in like 4 years. But when I wanted to come back to it and see if it had any redeeming qualities, I came back to Meshuggah. And guess what? I yelled "FUCK YES!!!!!!" at the top of my lungs. I woke up my upstairs neighbors. They're really angry, but I don't care. I love Meshuggah so hard.
I saw meshuggah in february and I probably just stood there the whole time... what the fuck else are you meant to do when your mind is being blown? It was like being overloaded with awesome and my limbs shut down.
im saw like 5 minutes of them at soundwave festival brisbane last month (because my mate wanted to see someone else) and they were amazing!! i should have stayed at there set because it would have been even better \m/
As a drummer, I find that thinking about the figure itself and counting and repeating isn't really the best way to go. Just follow the steady 4/4 base and groove along with the rest. Worst case scenario, you can always memorize whatever it is they're doing.
It's all 4/4. The feet and guitar pattern is often just displaced 16th or triplet feel 8th or 16th notes. This in context with irregular ostinato's on the cymbals and snare hits creates an intensely complex pattern. However, I assure you, that if you listen to the ACCENTS you'll be able to easily bang your head in time! :)
I don't know what you guys nag about, but this song is one of the few songs that ISN'T so weirdly timed. It's all 4/4, but the drums make it sound weird at the intro etc.
@9wizen9 wow dude... me too... the intro is perfectly describing the mood i´m in when i have to stand up early in the morning and am in complete agony... haha
What's professional about somebody explaining what's he's actually doing? I believe that explaining Haake's drum techniques in a live performance video is a perfectly normal gesture. I mean, it's incredible to have such complicated rhythms and patterns exist within 4/4 and 6/8 time. When I sit down and listen to this band, I have to decide if I am going to focus on the guitar or drums before I begin the song.
@shotinthedark90 : Well, finally somebody, who can say their opinion without offending. Not much people do that these days, respect :) Well, Usually, there are much more kinds of metal rhythms, check out "Bleed" by Meshuggah. Not just bass snare etc. And there can be a lot of creativity, especially, if you combine metal with jazz or othe genres or if you do complex rhythms.
Yeah, I'm getting sick and tired of all of these people who believe all of Meshuggah's songs are based off polyrhythms, when almost all of them are simply 4/4.
fuck this shit, man. I can't go through a single day without hearing this song. It's like, addictive man! It's a fucking addiction! I'm getting high on Meshuggah!
@SkylerMead That's not entirely accurate, but i imagine those are feelings talking rather than reason. I mean the Pantera bit, as for Meshuggah no doubts about it.
Well, Combustion certainly isn't their most messed up song when it comes to time signature. In fact, most of their songs are 4/4, it just gets confused when the guitar and drums aren't following eachother.
@shotinthedark90 this song is unique to meshuggah in that one can follow it after one listen. check out other tracks from obZen, or the entire nothing album. their music, in general, is dysmorphic in musical structure, avante garde if you will, but definitely after a few days of listening leeches your mind, if not your soul.
Yes, but the guitars and drums are displaced by 1/2 of a beat, which is most noticeable at :27. Thomas Haakes snare hits are an eighth note behind the guitar hits, which creates a very cool effect.
How is it now? Haake plays a 4/4 with his hands and then he play 7/8 or 5/8 with his feets with the guitars? I aint very good at this but aint that kinda how it is?
@DEPTHCHARGE66 lol just type in straws pulled at random live and compare them to the original version of straws pulled at random. idk why but jens' vocals change live a lot, i think he experiments. all are awesome
I tried getting a similar guitar tone from my rig and it just laughed at me.
My favourite genre right now is *MESHUGGAH* They're not just a band, they have their own version of metal. And it's not caIIed Djent.
I need to buy this DVD and upload this song in higher quality. So brilliant.
friendly reminder!!! upload it already!!!

Jane Doe I went searching for it after seeing this comment
@@darrenharpur9759 MERCI !!

The definition of bad ass is: this song. This song should be playing when the universe ends, or should have been playing when it began.
I clicked "pause" and it kept playing! This must be a sign!

That thing blew my mind. With the ticking sound yes? It just made it even more clear, but still mind-boggling...
no doubt, that's literally the meshuggah technique. playing 4/4 and changing the accents
I personally found this to be one of their simpler songs. I always thought that it's 4/4 but the drums play "on downbeat" (or accenting the "and as +Elias Simon said).
Until you realize that the drums are half a beat off for the entire track.
Once u understand Meshuggah , ur perspective of what music is changes.....
I understood them. Now everything else on this planet sounds weak.
Genius.
I still maintain to this day that you can legitimately dance- not mosh- but dance, to Meshuggah. Haake keeps the 4/4 like a champ.

1:42 WHALEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS
Drummer is a god!
Whatever Tomas is, it's not human! And this isn't even his final form.
The entire band is, bot yes, Tomas is just inhuman.
He's a synth!
=.=
Getting pumped and raged out listening to this playlist, and then a warm/fuzzy loving commercial start playing... way to kill the mood...
There are no speakers on Earth that go loud enough to do this video justice.
If I had a dollar for each pixel...i'll have like 5 dolars
Pretty sure there is one more half pixel. Somehow.
I haven't listened to any metal in like 4 years.

Hate that I have this DVD yet I go to youtube every time I feel like watching it...
I just bought this dvd and now i have to wait at least 3 weeks for it to arrive in the post!
AAAARGH!
Seeing them in 15 days. Can't believe it. Can't wait.
wtf my volume on everything is up all the way!!! not loud enough!
Equalized Shitty volume!
This song is one of the thrashiest, heaviest songs I've ever heard.
This is genious!!
very impressive how Fredrik plays all that complex music when his cleary high... or something XD.
Saw them live like an month ago and godamn! Best live i ever been to!
Medley's amazing
Damn Great! Thanks for Posting!
Saw them in glasgow 2 nights ago, was so happy when they played this :D such a great gig, glad I got to see them!!
You are a good man. Cheers!
im saw like 5 minutes of them at soundwave festival brisbane last month (because my mate wanted to see someone else) and they were amazing!! i should have stayed at there set because it would have been even better \m/

perfect
This song grooves so fucking hard.

That comment was metal as fuck. Kudos!
I hate myself. For not being in this f*cking pit!!
@2 people are deaf and they cant hear the awesomeness that is meshuggah.
@Toaster135 it's a skank beat, going kick - snare - kick snare. the kick drum is on the count, the snare on the upbeats.
No, he's not trying to make himself look like a professional. Everyone who has read any interview with Meshuggah knows that it works that way.
This song wakes me up every morning :D
awesome f-ing voice!
HD just made it square!
They sound just as awesome as they do on the album!!
Lol. You made my day dude!
@MrAnchell same here bro. my wake-up call is this song.
I saw them live last night. Mosh pit was intense as fuck
@MasterofDesaster1989 for sure man, I was at this show in Toronto definitely good memories, thanks.
@9wizen9 wow dude... me too... the intro is perfectly describing the mood i´m in when i have to stand up early in the morning and am in complete agony... haha
Oh thanks. Didn't know that.
My goal is to see these guys live at least 10 times before I die
@theancient74 you should realy buy it. It is just amazing. Awesome Crystal clear sound on the CD and the DvD a must have ;)
Meshuggah tomorrow in Lisbon \m/

Nice mosh
kick ass solo on this one!
cant believe i was there
Id do anything to see at least this song LIVE!

That's what I love about Meshuggah.
i don't really care about the crowd or whatever but i know if i was there i would go fucking insane!
I hear it every morning with the first cigarette of the day.Fuckin mind blowing
fuck this shit, man. I can't go through a single day without hearing this song. It's like, addictive man! It's a fucking addiction! I'm getting high on Meshuggah!
meshuggah , super brutales!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@SkylerMead That's not entirely accurate, but i imagine those are feelings talking rather than reason. I mean the Pantera bit, as for Meshuggah no doubts about it.
This song (as are most of Meshuggah's songs) is actually in a steady 4/4 time signature. It's the constant polyrythms that make it hard to catch.
There are no polyrhythms in this one. It's just all suncopated by a 16th note, so the shifted count-in is not actually shifted
@rockrenegade I agree. I wonder why they chose this performance to put on the DVD.
@9wizen9 I won't even sleep at night just because of this song :D
Fuck yeah, Toronto!
Well, Combustion certainly isn't their most messed up song when it comes to time signature. In fact, most of their songs are 4/4, it just gets confused when the guitar and drums aren't following eachother.
@disturbanite8 So on the 20 december, 2012, it will be a fucking live of Meshuggah's new album, and KOLOSS will destroy the earth!!!!
@Laotze89 yep, study those flams and you too can twist
5 people want a shiny head like Jens KIdman's.
Meshuggah plays a system of a down song (in the most delightful way).
Dat first guitar note.
I want to meet the person who disliked this and jam my thumbs in their eye sockets
@DEPTHCHARGE66 ur right about the vocals but i think its only in this vid. normally i even like his live voice better than in the studio
We wouldn't appreciate the ones they do. And the others too.
@shotinthedark90 this song is unique to meshuggah in that one can follow it after one listen. check out other tracks from obZen, or the entire nothing album. their music, in general, is dysmorphic in musical structure, avante garde if you will, but definitely after a few days of listening leeches your mind, if not your soul.
best comment...!

Hail to the fucking kings!
just the hihat and snare sir
2 people cant headbang to this
How is it now? Haake plays a 4/4 with his hands and then he play 7/8 or 5/8 with his feets with the guitars? I aint very good at this but aint that kinda how it is?
i just shit my pants at my desk at work. whoops
That snare sound someone's knocking on my wall.
drummer is a god
Someone is mad. Haha! Hilarious.
@theancient74 buy the dvd.
badass, he has a deadkennedys shirt ha
@gibbsies
I can't agree on that, brother. Take Pravus for example, definitely some 7/4 there.
its hard to mosh when the time signature is π/the mass of sun
@DEPTHCHARGE66 lol just type in straws pulled at random live and compare them to the original version of straws pulled at random. idk why but jens' vocals change live a lot, i think he experiments. all are awesome
MESHUGGAH REMINDS ME DOOM FROM ID-SOFTWARE: A MECHANICAL CHAOS; A PERPETUAL BLACK DEATH... O SI
Carl Sagan's on lead guitar and they've got Bertrand fucking Russell drumming.
@Toolguitarplayer
That movie is amazing AND wtf is a Drunk Stick lol?
4 people wish this recording was louder ...
