Loved this game forever. I feel like the MM:Zero games are the kinda spiritual successors. Love them too! I'm playing 30XX on the Steam Deck and the gameplay there compared to seeing Mischief makers for the first time in awhile is surprisingly similar.
Ive not played the megaman zero games. Im kind of a basic bitch megaman fan. Ive only played most of the classic and x games. I bought megaman legends for ps1 tho but i have yet to play it.
This was the game that introduced me to S rankings, 20 years ago. Just casually optimizing my A times when suddenly an S showed up. Love this game. Shake, shake!
I have 100%ed the game. in fact, there's one extra gold gem that can be easily missed. You get an extra gold gem in the ending if you've gotten an average of an A rank for every stage. (Or was it an A on everyyhing? Or an average of S? S ranks are possible on some levels.) If that's done, the ending changes slightly in a place involving Teran (the Clancer you control on those two levels). You need that gold gem to see the very _very_ final part of the ending. It's definitely an underrated classic!
I actually got this game when it was new, but I've since lost it in a less than amicable moving house. It felt like I'd found some hidden weird gem. It was right as the weirder anime were getting ported to the US, I think, but I didn't get the connection. There were other weird games, like Lode Runner 3D. But that one felt so much more creepy, while this one was just unpredictably weird to me. I played DK64 a lot more, but I still loved this game.
A friend of mine and I wanted this game when it first came out with the N64, but we never got it back then. I would later find out that my head just didn't agree with the N64. I have simulation sickness in some 3D games, and the N64 was particularly bad about triggering it, so I didn't own an N64 for very long. I did eventually find a copy of Mischief Makers and got it for my friend. I knew he wanted it, I so I figured why not pick it up for him? Of course, he's the guy I bought The Misadventures of Tron Bonne for. I also got him a copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends. Also, I had a tendency to dump games on him if I didn't get a chance to play them. He got a copy of Golden Sun 1 and 2 from me, Final Fantasy III(U.S., so Final Fantasy VI), and even Capcom vs Tatsunoko. So, anyway, I never played this one. Apparently, it started out being developed for the SNES, but got moved over to the N64. I watched my friend play it for about thirty minutes. It didn't trigger my sickness terribly much, but it was enough that I decided I was going to pass on it. Oh, yeah. The record for a game triggering my sickness goes to an N64 game called _Space Station Silicon Valley_ . My friend and I watched the intro, and I watched him play the game for about a minute, and I was in REALLY bad shape. I was nauseated and about to get a headache.
@@Ninnintender The good news is there were enough of the good games that didn't give me issues. Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart 64 were fine. I picked up a PlayStation about that time. FYI Mischief Makers was far and away Treasure's best selling game at the time (something like 20,000 units). Back in around year 2000 I got an N64 precisely for the three Treasure games on it, and I loved working through Mischief Makers despite it being the least favourite. Anyway, I enjoyed your thoughts on it particularly as I can only recall the odd scene here and there. I think I'd struggle mastering it today because I'm too old and impatient for the fiddlier aspects of its design. For what it's worth my all time favourites Treasure games are probably Sin and Punishment and Gunstar Heroes.
20,000 units worldwide? That doesn’t seem right. Where did you find this info? If true that really makes me wonder how much dynamite headdy and gunstar heroes sold. No way mischief makers beat mcdonalds treasureland adventures in sales.
Nice game with interesting and innovative gameplay, should've gotten an remake with upscaled graphics for the Dreamcast back in the days in my opinion. That would've saved it from sliding into the medi core and obscure corner it ended up.
I don’t know if porting it to Dreamcast would have really helped lol, but thats not an entirely crazy concept as one of treasure’s other n64 games, bangai o, got ported to Dreamcast.

I also tried it a few years ago on an emulator and didn't make it much further. But it has something appealing about it that makes me want to give it another go!
This sort of unscripted, unfocused review style feels straight out of 2010 youtube, just with better camera quality, lol, but I feel you. Mischief Makers was a surprisingly solid game back in the day. One of the best 2D games in an era where the industry had largely abandoned 2D.

10:26 Suggestion... Script! Or if you don't like to do a script and prefer to just talk naturally, get a white board and write important bullet points on it like character names, etc. That way you don't forget names, like the name of the team of villains (The Bestector) or Teran here. I almost stopped watching because of you forgetting The Beastector, as it made me feel like you probably skipped the dialogue and didn't really care that much about this hidden gem of a game. One of my pet peeves is when someone makes a video on a subject and you can tell they only did it for views so they didn't do any research into the subject. But I let it go because I could tell you really do like the game and you've got good presentation.
It's a master piece, definitely agree on being the most underrated n64 game by far. Top 10 best game on the console (1 OoT/Majora's, 2 Mario64, 3 Perfect Dark/ Golden Eye, 4 Banjo1&2, 5 SmashBros, 6 Mario Kart, 7 Diddy Kong R., 8 DK64, 9 1080, 10 Mischief Makers)
For me Treasure made quite some bangers back in the day, be it Gunstar Heroes on the Genesis/Mega Drive, Guardian Heroes on the Sega Saturn or... Mischief Maker\ on the N64. Treasure with Irem made most of the games I like allot.
I'm not sure how well it sold, but I remember HATING it as a kid. Back then I was like 11 or 12, and everyone really wanted 3D games (especially in the West). I rented this game from Blockbuster, and I was so disappointed. I tried to push through it, but eventually dropped it & rented Battle Tanx instead (loved that game)! I wish I gave it more of a chance. If I ever get an N64 again I'll definitely give it another try. This & Goemon were two 2D games I remember really not giving a fair shake.
15:01 Lol dude don't just guess, that's something you should have researched if you were going to bring it up, don't just guess then tell the viewer to look it up. You did it in a humorous way at least. Mischief Makers sold 0.43m copies, and surprisingly they sold the most in North America, according to VGChartz. 0.25m in the USA, 0.07m in Japan, 0.06m in Europe, and 0.06m in other regions.
Im working on a video right now that actually requires research and its gonna be semi scripted, but yes i should have actually looked up how much it sold
Mischief Makers was Awesome, it's such a shame hardly any creative cool games like that are out now. This was a game that was fun the whole way through, no padding for length, and had so much personality and character. Great game in every way. Definitely prefer it over Mario 64 which is actually kind of bland looking back on it, especially compared to Mischief Makers.
The Top 5 Underrated N64 games are: Mischief Makers Mystical Ninja starring Goemon Ogre Battle 64 Aero Fighters Assault Shadow Man Only one of these games can be played easily on modern hardware these days.
@@Ninnintender ??? They translated both of the major Mystical Ninja games on N64 to English, though? There are several Goemon games that never got translated and remained only in Japan, but most of them are on the SNES/Super Famicom.
It was released in an era where if it wasn’t 3d, it would be glossed over. I don’t remember seeing many old reviews of this game that truly praised it but that may just be me.
@@Ninnintender It got better reviews than Yoshi's Story, and certainly is better game. But yeah, Donkey Kong Country basically killed 2D -games, coz nowbody was able to reach or surpass quality that high. Around the time WII arrived, 2D was back, and still strong.
Treasure made a lot of great games, but I'd consider this their weakest. The bizarre glowing Scream mask faces being copy/pasted all over the game killed it for me.
I've always hated the drawings of these characters. Where the hell are their skulls? How did this get past quality control? Granted the Mega Man box art did too, but this looks like Japanese art, and usually they're not too keen on having things like this slip through the cracks.

It's a master piece, definitely agree on being the most underrated n64 game by far. Top 10 best game on the console (1 OoT/Majora's, 2 Mario64, 3 Perfect Dark/ Golden Eye, 4 Banjo1&2, 5 SmashBros, 6 Mario Kart, 7 Diddy Kong R., 8 DK64, 9 1080, 10 Mischief Makers)
still say *shake shake!* to this day.
For me Treasure made quite some bangers back in the day, be it Gunstar Heroes on the Genesis/Mega Drive, Guardian Heroes on the Sega Saturn or... Mischief Maker\ on the N64. Treasure with Irem made most of the games I like allot.
I dont think I’ve played a single irem game but ive heard of them. I know they released a collection of their games recently.
Its takes a bit to fully get accustomed to it
in the best way, she looks straight outta megaman
While watching this video, I can't help to wonder, what's in your pocket? Is that a hamster?
My phone???????
@Ninnintender sorry, It looked furry from my perspective, like a little hamster or something XD
I really like Blast Corps, nobody ever brings it up😂
I played a bit of that on rare replay
Mischief Makers is far too known and poplar to be called underrated. Good game tho, that's a fact.
Its still pretty niche tho but i feel you
15:01 Lol dude don't just guess, that's something you should have researched if you were going to bring it up, don't just guess then tell the viewer to look it up.
I never played Mischief Makers but it definitely looks like a Klonoa clone.
Eh i never really saw it as a klonoa clone
@@Ninnintender its the grabbing and the throwing mechanic is what i meant, similar style of gameplay
@ yeah thats true
Hard to be a clone if Mischief Makers launched first. They released the same year though so the developers probably knew other and traded notes.
Treasure is a much smaller company than Namco but they were probably aware of each other
I loved this game growing up!!!!
Thats awesome!
Mischief Makers was my freaking JAM right above Star Fox
Mischief Makers was Awesome, it's such a shame hardly any creative cool games like that are out now. This was a game that was fun the whole way through, no padding for length, and had so much personality and character. Great game in every way.
Definitely prefer it over Mario 64 which is actually kind of bland looking back on it, especially compared to Mischief Makers.
Mario 64 and Mischief makers are not comparable imo lol
The Top 5 Underrated N64 games are:
Mischief Makers
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon
Ogre Battle 64
Aero Fighters Assault
Shadow Man
Only one of these games can be played easily on modern hardware these days.
@@MidlifeCrisisJoe i have an import of mystical ninja that i got for $5 and its incredibly hard cause of the language barrier
@@Ninnintender ??? They translated both of the major Mystical Ninja games on N64 to English, though? There are several Goemon games that never got translated and remained only in Japan, but most of them are on the SNES/Super Famicom.
I know it got translated im just saying i own a Japanese copy of the game so its hard to play in Japanese
i remember getting this game at toys are us, i picked it up based on the box art like you did when you were 9 years old....this game was the shit
my favorite i wish i still had my cart
Not really unrerrated, just under purchased. -This game got around 90+% reviews at the time, but admitedly it would had deserved even highter score.
@ yeah im not a big yoshi’s story guy. Its just okay
Treasure made a lot of great games, but I'd consider this their weakest. The bizarre glowing Scream mask faces being copy/pasted all over the game killed it for me.
It may have influenced me a lot.
Shake Shake!
You should try Illbleed for dreamcast
Ive heard of that one! I have a gdemu so i could totally check it out!
I can tell you didn't make a script. Your quality would be tenfold if you did make one.
@@VVVVV99611 my next vid is gonna be semi scripted
Conker's bad fur Day
Yup!
So, are you just a very young looking 30+ guy, or early 20s that was way behind on consoles?
@@Nevir202 very late teens who likes old ass games
I've always hated the drawings of these characters. Where the hell are their skulls? How did this get past quality control? Granted the Mega Man box art did too, but this looks like Japanese art, and usually they're not too keen on having things like this slip through the cracks.
They look so good tho
You got potential but you lack structure - maybe try copying balrog games room?
@@ernestocastelli9005 never heard of em
#goldeneye, #banjokazooie? Pretty scummy stuff.
🤷♂️
I always hated it because of the character
What the flip

What am I even watching...? >_>
Idk lil bro
What are you even talking about. It's a game review, are you slow or something?
A video about a child childishly "covering" an "obscure" game.. the internet.
U good lil bro?
It costs $0.00 to not be like this, and yet….
Out of all the flavours in the world, you chose to be salty.
You're clearly a very unhappy person to feel the need to post this comment. Your comment doesn't even make sense as an insult, someone is simply reviewing a game they like. No one with a functional brain can see an issue with that.
Get some psychological help instead of trying to make random strangers as unhappy as you.
