The Story of Blindfolded Mario 64's Hardest Speedrun Star
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- Darkworld Reds is the key to the new blindfolded 16 Star Speedrun route in Super Mario 64. But how do speedrunners actually manage to do this incredibly hard star while blindfolded? And not only that, but consistent enough to do in actual speedruns?
In visual speedruns it is already tradition to use the very difficult LBLJ trick in order to get to the first Bowser stage early (before reaching 8 stars), and then collecting the 8 red coins on the way, as they grant a very fast star. Even so, it is pretty risky and not directly recommended for beginners, due to its sheer difficulty.
In blindfolded Super Mario 64, it was performed for the first time in 2018-2019 by Katun, then improved for the 120 Star run by Bubzia in 2021. After a few more discoveries and ideas of other community members, we made a new route for the star in 2023 which also enabled a potential blindfolded LBLJ route for the first time in speedrunning history.
The catch? It is by far the hardest star in not only 16 Star, but all the way up to all the stars that we get in 70. Combine that with needing to do a fast and first-try LBLJ every attempt, and you get a hellish route that no one wants to run. But now, in 2024, we optimized the star even further. In this video, Bubzia talks about the strategies and the history of this infamous star, explains the difficulties and how it all plays out into the new LBLJ route now.
This is my first documentary style video about blindfolded speedrunning as well, so I would appreciate any kind of feedback in the comments!!! Thank you!

The sub 20 grind is also still continuing if you are interested, so check out the streams!
That was amazing, and I'd love more stories of blindfolded star strats for even single stars or single stages
Yeah agreed, this was compelling to watch and I'd love more!
Yeah, you really did an amazing job. I would love to hear more stories like this. Well done!
Great video! Could you list the background music tracks used in the description or a pinned comment? There were some real bangers I hadn't heard before!
I watched this blindfolded
I listened to this with my ears closed.
What was your time?
Impressive
Most impressive part is watching this blindfolded and normalizing the mouse clicks or screen taps to reach the comment section and also type the comment blindfolded.
Truly a master of UA-cam 64.
Then how did you know you finished… you cheated.
My favorite blindfolded speedrunning strat is smelling the pixels.
Brooo that is genius
For some extra context: the current blindfolded DW reds world record is 1:03.86; the best X-cam time for visual shigeru cycle (the "standard" speedrunning cycle) is 46.36. So we're just a bit over 15 seconds behind visual runners. I don't know about you, but as someone who's been in the community back when it was a 5-minute star, this is really, really mind-boggling to me.
What an amazing journey it has been, and what an amazing video documenting the journey. I'm really glad and proud to have been a small part of it! 💙
That was the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard. So I started optimizing it.
Bruh i remember watching Sinister doing punch out blind a decade ago thinking it was absolutely mental. What you guys are doing with SM64 is just complete insanity. So much respect. I would love more of these lore videos!
The blindfolded speedrunning community is made of legends. Keep up the good work!
Blindfolded speedruns are so cool. Videos like these are important to me, since I'll never get on this level of gaming myself! I'd love to see more documentary style videos from you :-)
Great video! It was fun to learn how all of these blindfolded setups were optimized over time
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
this was great! nice editing and general pace, easy to follow explanations and even better with perfect visual cues. really digestible and understandable for those who aren't familiar with speedrunning terms (such as myself, im still learning!). i look forward to more vids like this! also shoutout to your determination and mad talent, still can't believe you're getting closer and closer to a sub20 run!
Awesome, thank you so much! Appreciate the comment 😁
I like the irony of your compliment saying Bubzia has perfect visual cues :D
Love this video, please make more of these breakdowns
Oh wow! super super love seeing speedrun documentaries from you. Watching your video about the 16 star grind right now!
Thank you so much! Happy you are watching through them and enjoying them!
It's actually wild that you managed to get a DWR run that is *one cycle* behind Shigeru's visual runs.
this is so well documented and the story telling was on point. You got a new follower, enjoyed the content alot, keep up the good work
Awesome, thank you! Happy you liked it!
"Home - We're finally landing" starts playing 🎵
Amazing for a first documentary! Big fan of all your work!
Great video! I really enjoyed getting a recap of all of this and your editing and narration make this a really interesting watch. Looking forward to more documentaries and future stories starting with nico saying "I have an idea...". :D
This video was super well made, it definitely does not seem like your first documentary type video. Awesome stuff!
I loved this. I've watched quite a few hours of your videos and streams, but never knew exactly how you do any star, this explains a lot.
This video is important.
15:26 there is a bridge their 🤯
Hey man this video was really well done, the more you make videos the more I respect you not only as a speedrunner, but as a content creator as well!
This is insane.. great work to everyone involved and everyone still working hard in the lab!!
I really enjoyed this format, and can't wait for more history breakdowns of other stars!
I found out this existed thanks to lunaticj and im so psyched to watch it. Awesome to see you branching out a little bit! As someone outside the community, I really appreciate stories like these
That is really nice to hear, welcome in then and happy you enjoyed it!
Bruh, just BLJ on the elevator smh 🤦🏻
Jokes aside, amazing video, it came out even better than I expected! I really enjoyed the story telling, the in depth analysis, and even more the music choice, good job to you and also LunaticJ for the edit!💪🏻
(Also, you give too much credit, the idea of inplementing it in 16 star was yours 😅)
Haha thank you 😁😁 Happy you liked it! Nah dude you are definitely deeply involved in this whole thing 🙌
@@Bubzia well... yeah I can say I am 😅 that said, the theorising and routing for the LBLJ route was mainly yours 🙂
Great video!
I love learning about how you all colaborate to come up with new strats
Love from Mexico 🇲🇽
I learned a lot. I will try some of this for my visual runs
This was a great video! I'm very much looking forward to seeing more in the future!
I couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole video! Loved it, very excited for more :)
Blindfolded? This makes my hands sweat on a casual playthrough. It’s the camera with the upper platforms towards the end
Great video! Keep up the amazing content
Really well made video Bubzia! As I'm not too deep into mario speedrunnig it was really nice to get some insight in the carzy work, the speedrun community is doing. Congratz to your recent achivement. Always love your streams on twitch, when I manage to pick them up! Keep on with your great work!
Glad you enjoyed and thank you 😁🙌
GG. Watching this from Cuba XD
Ive always tought the hardest stage was LLL 100 but Im very excited to see this video!
LLL 100 is of course harder, but I would not consider it a 'speedrun' star necessarily. It was only done me so far and it has more 'completion' vibes than speedrun for sure.
Loved the video!! Fascinating, I had no idea about all this. It's absolutely insane, and kinda makes me want to try playing something blindfolded
I bet a certain Queen who plays Moster Hunter "blindfolded" could do it faster 😂
In all seriousness, Super Mario 64 is a game I never thought could be beaten blindfolded. But look how far speedrunning has come from the days of Punch Out being beaten blindfolded.
I really enjoyed the video, it was interesting to see how far the record has come. And blindfolded speedrunning in general
Bomberman music on top just makes this video 10x better than it already is
Love this video! Thanks for putting in the work to make this
I love these types of videos
Great video! I am always game for an SM64 explainer video.
Mostly commenting for engagement metrics, but great video! I hope you make other content like this again sometime!
Appreciate it 😁😁
Great video, i loved it!
Awesome video! Great work!
Great video, keep it up Bubzia! :)
Thanks, will do!
Nico must have sounded like such an madman back there and then he cuts a speedrun in half.
Edit: have you done a blind speedrunner vs X amount of youtubers mario 64 race yet?
Nico is absolutely a great runner and human as well!
Nope have not done so yet, but would be down 👀👀
Considering all of the talk about beat counting it wouldve been interesting to point out some of the things being listened for in the actual music.
Thanks for the feedback, will try to look out for more instances like this next time!
LOVED THIS!!! I'd love to see one for like DDD Reds (is it reds+100 in blindfolded?)
Its in the works 👀
Great documentary now you just need to do it blindfolded.
I was sent here by LunaticJ- I wanna here ALL about this one
Really enjoyed this and im gonna watch that WR again for more context! you're a legend man and im excited to see more of this in between grinds♥
Really? 8 red coins in the sky isn’t harder? It’s all cannons
Its not really a 'speedrun star' though, it is only done in 120 since its more a completion type of thing. This is more meant in a more speedrun fashion like 16 and 70 star.
6:30 how did getting the first coins faster help with the music cues?
We can catch a faster cycle at the first elevator allowing for the triple jump wallkick strategy, which then again allows us to catch a faster cycle/ music cue later on!

@@Bubzia thx
Great vid. Is there a reason the English version is used instead of the Japanese? I thought it saved time.
There is no Japanese version on Wii VC and the time difference is really not there in blindfolded. In fact the fact that there is no lag probably even saves the time loss already
In the beginning I wondered why DW Reds would be the hardest blindfolded star, considering how stupidly hard DDD Reds and 100 are. The title suggests the hardest star of all 120. It's not a bad video, it's just a misleading title. Had it mentioned 16-star, well, of course it's DW Reds.
My line of thought is and was, that both DDD and LLL 100 are harder yes, but they are not speedrun stars by any means. I am so far the only one who has managed to complete them as well as 120 star, so I consider 120 blindfolded still more a challenge run than an optimized speedrun. DW reds is by far the hardest all the way to 70 star, where the speedrun is actually developed quite a bit. Anyways thanks for the feedback, will keep it in mind for the next times!
@@Bubzia Of course blindfolded 120-star is mostly a challenge, but remembering your 11+ hour masterpiece, you did try to be fast where it makes sense. Blindfolded 120-star is most definitely not a pure challenge run, but an interesting mix of speedrun and challenge.
I don't re-watch those 11 hours often, but keeping it in mind helps me in my life pushing through challenges and even attempt things I or others deem impossible. It's really motivating to see someone so sympathetic perform a thought-to-be-impossible task. I dare to say it changed my life.
Really cool video! 🎉 Love what you do!
Thank you so much!
Nice video!
This was so interesting
Fascinating bro
Great Job!
We are all blindfolded, in some way
I love those videos
Now make a video like this about Tower of the Wing Cap reds (well not now now, more like once you've improved it to be viable in 31 star)
You are a Legend!
💪💪💪
Insane legend
Do I hear bomberman music!!?
I always thought the lava level is the hardest one
It is, but since I am the only one who did it its not really considered a speedrun star, more like a completion
First! Your run yesterday was so good up until BITFS! You got this dude
You are AWESOME 😎
blind people are proud of you
Nice
With the latest cheating scandals revolving around blindfolded gaming, I was wonderung whether you have ever been falsely accused of cheating in your blindfolded runs? If so, did you pay much attention to it or go any lengths to "disprove" them?
Ty for the fun content :)
Pretty much every day I have comments about me being fake lol, I dont have the time and energy to deal with it, so I ignore them mostly, I cannot please everyone^^ I have enough achievements on my back and live runs as proof, so I dont feel like going the extra mile for pleasing people who anyways won't change their mind 😁 Just trying to move forward as much as I can
Gaming.
13:55 he can clearly see through his blindfold this guy is a fake
A very nice video I never knew that blindfold reds was almost as fast as visual reds it’s even faster than me
You're a legend
🖤🖤🖤
🤩
