Who knows what Steve Clark would've accomplished as a guitarist today. He was definitely one of the best, the riffs that he came up with were totally amazing.

He wasn't even the best guitarist in Leppard..most of the guitar we hear on their albums from that era was by Phil Collen. Clarke looked great, with his Jimmy Page image, but was a very average guitarist.

Steve Clark was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. To say that his playing style is unique is an understatement. He was a classically trained musician who created his own style. He was nothing short of amazing. Sadly, the world has lost a gifted and brilliant mind due to the demon known as addiction. His spirit lives on in all of us, the DL fans. His legend lives on in DL's music. RIP Stephen Maynard Clark (April 23, 1960-January 8, 1991). You were truly one of a kind.

True story: I have had a crush on Joe Elliott for decades starting with On Through the Night. Anyway....
A few years ago, I was lucky enough to move to a little village in Ireland. Hubby and I walked into the local pub one night and came face to face with JE. Now, I've been faced with celebrities before, but this was one of two times I literally couldn't talk when it happened (the other was Jimmy Page.) Long story short, he not only visited that night, but many nights after. I'd like to say it was because of me, but it's his ''local'' too, so I'm betting it's just convenient for him. If I hadn't been 8.5 mos. pregnant, who knows how that first encounter would have ended? ;-) And that, is the end of my bragging. Foolin' and Bringing On The Heartache tie for my favorites.

He never understood how loved he was and how his music changed and sometimes saved peoples lives. Gorgeous, sensitive, sweet Steve. Still so loved and always will be. My heart just aches for him.

When Steven Maynard Clark passed away on January 8, 1991, a huge hole was ripped away from the heart of Def Leppard. Not only was he a truly amazing guitarist, but a huge part of their family. It's impossible to replace such talent and band chemistry created by this man. Kudos to Def Leppard for not only soldiering on despite their loss, but keeping his memory alive at every concert.

Man, I still can't believe "steamin" is gone... 25 years now... WOW, how the time has flown... I was about 22 when he died and at the time had been playing guitar for about 7 years, and he was one of my major mojo influences... I loved his skip string arpeggios and his overall craft of completely understanding the art of the guitar. He was before his time and was so vital to the sound of the lep... He was never flash, or brash, just let the art of his skill do the talking. Period... If you listen hard and heavy to his playing, he was so beyond the power chord playing of the 80's and was to me, better than the people he called his influences... If you listen to Frank Hannon, Chris DeGarmo, Michael Wilton, Phil Collen, Slash, Viv, and even players such as Tom Morrel, and Jason White, you hear methods and the heart and soul of Steamin... Steve said that Joe Perry and Jimmy Page were his biggest influences, but I think he took their chops and made them in his "quirky" string-skipping chord progressions... Just listen to all the stuff on "on through the night", and High and dry and you will hear the magic of how he picked every note, using little special effects or hammer-ons... He picked every single note. Players today, mimic him, but using fast paced hammering and back-picking, even Fran Hannon does this... Steve gave birth to this kind of playing... Kudos to Tesla for keeping him alive ion their music, especially Frank... I still break out the white les Paul and rip-off a few chords of the entire high-n-dry album when we play live... He had the game, he had the craft, he was just too far gone before even noticed... Just think about where he would be today, if he would have known just how much he was idolized... Copied, but never duplicated... RIP my friend, I can't believe you have been gone so long... See you on the other side... Steam-on... Peace.. jlg...

I agree with everything you've said here. I was 16 when he passed on. I also try and imitate his style, which is so much harder than the way many others (including his own idols) play, as you mentioned. I prefer this style and how it sounds compared to the HO's etc.

      @jakelaguna2278 8 років тому +6

Thanks for the thumbs-up... He was a very original player and I hear a lot of his riffs in guitar players today... One in particular, Frank Hannon of Tesla... And as far as Phil C... well, he ripped a lot of them off... Peace...jlg...

    No promises
    No guarantees
When you come down here you're
    Already on your knees
You wanna ride White Lightnin', then just sign your name
If you wanna dance with the devil, you gotta play his way
    (Play the game)
    You gotta taste that sweetness
    'Cos you can't say no
But are you ready for the nightmare
    When you can't let go
    Like a soldier of fortune
    When the money runs dry
You've got rivers of bitter tears
    (In your eyes)
You wanna leave but you can't let go
You wanna stop but you can't say no
(You never laugh about it, you just can't live without it)
You've had enough but you just want more
You never get what you're looking for
    (You never laugh about it)
    You've got both ends burning
Like a moth to a flame
    You're going off the rails
    Like a runaway train
    It's a no-win situation
    And there's no way out
And no one will ever hear you - Scream and shout
    [Repeat Bridge]
Run - He's coming to claim you
Run - Nowhere to hide away
Run - You dance with danger
Run - Oh you gotta ride
The White Lightning - On a dead end street
White Lightning - Where the deadbeats meet
White Lightning - It's a one way ride
White Lightning - Oh, there's nowhere to hide
Such a lonely road you ride
It's not easy when you don't know why
Such a heavy load you hide
You never leave no matter how you try
Run - He's coming to claim you
Run - Nowhere to hide away
Run - You dance with danger
Run - Oh, you gotta ride
The White Lightning - On a dead end street
White Lightning - Where the deadbeats meet
    White Lightning - It's a one-way ride
White Lightning - Oh there's nowhere to hide
    (White Lightning)
Can you feel it? - Can you feel it?
    (White Lightning)
    It's so dangerous
    (White Lightning)
    No promises
    No guarantees
    (White Lighning)

I remember getting into Def Leppard when I was 14. It was when Hysteria took the world by a storm following the massive success of Pyromania. What’s different about todays music vs then ?? I’ll tell you. We had full albums of countless music! Def Leppard was a standard in the mid 80s to the early 90s. Steve Clark is one of my most influential guitar players of my generation. He played great some of the most recognizable guitar riffs ever. He not only looked the part but he played it really well also !! Play on for the heavens Steve. We still hear you !!

Man this will always make me cry. Steve is one of my guitar idols and why I want to pick up the guitar. To say his style is unique and creative is an understatement. He was truly special. Died way way too young. We lost a true, pure and badass talent. He was always live in us DL fan's hearts. His music will never die. Rest In Heaven Steamin Steve. See you on the other side brotha🤟🏼😭

To say Steve Clark was an amazing musician does not begin to do him justice. He not only had a unique style of playing guitar but the fact that Steve wrote 90°\° of Def Leppards songs to be honest there are no words to describe his talent he will always be missed RIP sweet rock n roll angel

Great compilation. Still sad to think about Steve gone - too bad he didnt have a stronger influence in his life - he may have turned in a different direction like Phil was able to. He would be in his 50's now - and probably still fantastic in his craft.

Steve Clark is only one of a handful of rock guitarists I would place in a list of the greatest of all time.
I hate to name drop, but I feel it is an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Gary Richrath….
RIP Steve 🙏❤️ there will never be another.
