This song was the most requested on radio of the 20th Century. This video was from 1964. Bill Medley is the baritone and Bobby Hatfield is the tenor. They were 24 at this time. I was lucky enough to grow up with their music.

For more of Bobby's beautiful countertenor voice you should check out his solo of Unchained Melody live in 1965. As you said, the studio version was in Ghost. Bobby changes things up a bit for this amazing live performance on the Andy Williams Show.

You also would be amazed by Bobby's " Summertime" and Bills "Brown Eyed Woman." "Unchained Melody" live in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show, amazing performance by Bobby. They were Inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame in 2003, Bobby passed away 8 months later. He is still missed today. Bill is still performing with Bucky Heard. But no one could ever take Bobby's place. And I dont think Bucky's trying to. Bobby left us a legacy of beautiful music for future generations to discover. A great man, husband, and father.❤❤❤

This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them is "Unchained Melody", "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.

The most-played song on American radio and television of the 20th century (BMI).
About the name, from Bill Medley himself in his 2014 memoir - "they then adopted the name The Righteous Brothers for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine Base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them."
Each did some solo songs throughout their pairing, and for albums would usually each have one; Bobby chose "Unchained Melody" and Bill once jokingly remarked that one of his biggest mistakes was not choosing it first. You might react to it for a good idea of Bobby's vocal tools!

Hi, guys! First of all, because of their very soulful tones we suspected they were black. Their sound was so unique and they quickly rose to the top of the charts. Anything they sang rose to the top of the charts. In fact, something extraordinary happened in the 60's. Johnny Mathis came out with a Greatest Hits album and it featured 12 songs of his gigantic hits. It was a tremendous best seller! Not to be outdone, The Righteous Bros came out with a Greatest Hits album, also featuring 12 of their greatest songs and it, too, was incredibly popular. To me, those two greatest hits albums packaged the greatest music you could ever imagine being on one record.

@@ronjones1077 Ron, did you hit a tender spot. Misty was so great it wasn't on that album. I think they left it out because it didn't deserve to be mixed in with other music! I have no clue but that was the way I felt. Johnny was magnificent and the song could not have been sung any better by anyone. "On my own, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree......."
Needless to say, I had a broken romance at the time and that song said it all, didn't it?

    • @ronjones1077
      @ronjones1077 Рік тому +3

The song is so good Clint Eastwood did a movie with that title about the song. Nancy Reagan “worked” with Johnny singing and this was also a personal favorite of hers. The way he fades in is iconic in the Look at me verse. Andy W does that on Maria and also Danny Boy. Perfection from both….

Two things: I think that fade-up from their silhouettes was because many people had never seen them (only heard their record on the radio) and thus were surprised when the spotlights came on and revealed one, then two, white soul singers instead of the black singers they had imagined!
Second, in 1999 the performing-rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) ranked the song as the most-played song on American radio and television in the 20th century, having accumulated more than 8 million airplays by 1999, and nearly 15 million by 2011.
    Bangin' Indeed!!! ⚒

This is from the very popular weekly music show called Shindig. The guys were regulars on the show. They were a very popular act on the show. By the time of this performance (Jan. 13, 1965), they had been seen by millions weekly for months.
This video has the live audio replaced by the studio recording. The real live audio, including the screaming teenage girls, is available on UA-cam. They, the girls, would go nuts every time they appeared.

If I remember correctly Bobby left the duo and was replaced. He returned and at some after that he passed away.

The Righteous Brothers were Bobby and Bill until Bobby's death in 2003. They did split up a couple of times and went solo, although for about a year Bobby did team up with another singer. Bucky Heard did not start singing with Bill until 2016 - until then Bill sang solo.

As others have commented here, you should really react to Unchained Melody next. That song was done solo by Bobby Hatfield (the guy who has a smaller role in this one). Bill didn't think that Unchained Melody would be a hit at all, so he let Bobby sing it by himself. The live version with him wearing the pink sports jacket is the best! 🙂

Bill Medley has the baritone voice and Bobby Hatfield has a counter tenor voice. This is from 1964. Phil Spector produced it and he used the reverberation sound in many songs. * (Cher is one of the back up singers)
Check out from 1965 ( live video on the Andy Williams Show) The Righteous Bros. featuring Bobby Hatfield ( he sings 5 octaves) singing "Unchained Melody".
The recorded version of the song is heard in the movie Ghost. But Bobby goes all out here and shows us his full range.
Watch from the beginning til the end of the video to hear how they got their name and you'll hear Andy Williams sing along with Bill and Bobby.
The song, "Unchained Melody" is the most covered song ever with over 670 covers. Actually the song comes from a 1950's prison movie called Unchained. Bobby was the 3rd person to cover this song and his version is by far the best. Bobby owns this song.
Bill has teamed up with Bucky to keep bringing the Righteous Bros. songs to the fans. No one can replace Bobby.
    RIP Bobby Hatfield
Other R.Bros. songs are: Soul and Inspiration, ( video)You'll Never Walk Alone,( video Ed Sullivan Show) Rock and Roll Heaven, ( video) Summertime ( solo by Bobby) I Just Want To Make Love To You ( solo by Bill)

This song was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil, and produced by Phil Spector. It's an example of Phil Spector's 'wall of sound'. Phil was a real piece of work in the worst possible way, and few tears were shed for him at his death in 2021; but, he did contribute in a major way to the music in music scene of the 60s. Bobby Hatfield sings solo on "Unchained Melody", beautiful song!

Back in 1962 Bobby and Bill were part of a 5 member group. They decided to go out on their own and left the group. They hadn't come up with a name yet for the two of them. While performing at the Paramours a fan shouted, “That was righteous, brothers!” That's when they decided to go with the name Righteous Brothers. And no Boll (baritone) wasn't the only guy. Check out "Unchained Melody" by them.

Bobby Hatfield got to do Unchained Melody by himself, so Bill got the lead on this, that just how they worked it. No one really replaced anyone, they stopped being a duo in the late 70s, now that Bill is in his latter years, he needed someone to do the duos with him, and since Bobby passed on he got the other guy to give the older ladies a concert performance. That is probably his money maker.

Bizarrely, I was searching for Police "Every Breath You Take" (I was looking for Sting commenting on the lyrics), and came across _Sting Accepts The Award For "Every Breath You Take" Becoming BMI's Most Performed Song_ (15million by 2019) In that award ceremony, Sting references this as probably the greatest record ever made. Full circle! 🤔
    Best Wishes, Chaps. ☮

"You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was released when I was a very young girl. I do believe that it is considered one of the top 5 songs released in the '60s. There have been so many covers of this song but, this original version has always been my favorite. This song has stood the test of time. I still hear it played on the radio.
Great review, BPR. Great way to start my Sunday. 🙂 🎶

You mentioned GREASE, a musical first performed in 1971. You mentioned this while watching a 1964 performance by The Righteous Brothers. Yo mentioned that Elvis recorded this. He did, in 1970. Here is the opening sentence on the Wikipedia about this song ""You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" is a song by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, first recorded in 1964 by the American vocal duo the Righteous Brothers. "
If this duo never recorded it, there is a good chance none of us would ever have heard this song.
    Enjoy your reactions,
    cheers,

It says December 1964 right on the screen at the beginning of the video, guys. HaHaHa That specific video is the visuals from a live performance on a show called Shindig* combined with the studio version of the song. THIS song may be all about Bill (In fact when Phil Spector first brought them the song, Bobby asked, "What am I supposed to do while Medley's singing?" and Spector replied, "Go to the bank."), but others are all about Bobby. They were pretty equal...although since high voices are a bit showier, Bobby might have actually gotten a bit more attention.
*You can see it with the original audio included in a compilation of all there Shindig appearances that someone posted on here.

If there were to be a lawsuit over music usage between the Righteous Brothers and the composer of "Summer Loving", it would be the Righteous Brothers who could bring the suit, since they released "You've lost that Lovin' Feelin'" in 1964, and the first performance of the musical "Grease" was in February of 1971.
The songwriting was done by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil. The production was by Phil Spector, famous for his "Wall of Sound" production technique.

Now please react to Bobby Hatfield singing Unchained Melody live on the Andy Williams show about 1967. I met Jenifer Warns a couple times when she came over to my house for New Years parties

OMG wait til you hear Bobby Hatfield! Their harmonies are glorious, and both have distinct and soulful voices. One of my favourite performances is their way too short performance of I'll Never Walk Alone on the Ed Sullivan Show. Perfect example of their voices complementing and enhancing each other's - I get
chills through it! But for me Bobby's vocals are incomparable! Heartfelt, touching, magnificent! It's always seemed a colossal waste of talent to relegate Bobby's magnificent vocals so often to the chorus. Unchained Melody, Summertime, I Believe, For Your Love are magical examples of Bobby's moving and beautiful vocals. No, he's not replaceable.🕊️💜

The most recorded song of the 20th Century.
This was taped WAY before Grease (about 13 years if memory serves), so Grease probably stole it from The Righteous Brothers. I THINK You've Lost That Loving Feeling was written for The Righteous Brothers, but most of their songs were from other places.
