Previous field work and artifacts recovered during the 2022 excavations indicated that remains were those of twelve Continental soldiers of the Maryland and Delaware regiments, one British Loyalist of a North Carolina regiment, and one Scottish Highlander 71st regiment.
The initial findings revealed that five of the soldiers were teenagers. This discovery says quite a bit about the composition of the Continental Lines from Maryland as they made their way with Baron de Kalb to engage in the Southern Campaigns. The oldest was estimated to be 40 - 50 years old. They ranged in stature from five feet two inches to more than six feet tall, with many being in the range of five feet, seven inches. While not all of the soldiers revealed evidence of traumatic injury, others were uncovered with clear evidence of battle injuries from musket balls and buck shot. The Scottish Highlander was the only soldier who appears to have been carefully laid to rest, face up with arms crossed. Others were found to be face down or overlaying each other.
They will be reinterred together with the exception of a Native American whose remains will be returned to the Catawba Nation for a private ceremony.
The soldiers items were still visible that helped identify plus record show which unit battled in this area.

A fantastic reaction. Proper tribute to a fallen soldier and one more example of the historic bond the U.S. has with the U.K.

I always smile when I see videos like this, the truth is our wars against Britain were mainly family feuds. My DNA is British and Scottish.

I read a book about the American Revolution, from the British point of view, and lot of the material was taken from British generals and admirals. They kept good records and so historians probably had a good idea as to what regiments were where. As far as the individual Highlander was concerned they probably could not identify the soldier unless they had a relatives DNA on record somewhere. The Revolutionary war actually the first civil war because there were so many still loyal to the crown.

Each soldier was placed in a coffin, specially built by Camden woodworker Philip Hultgren, who used long leaf pine wood salvaged from a 124-year-old former hardware store in downtown Camden. Examining the rings in the wood, Hultgren said he estimated that the trees began growing in the 1690s, almost a hundred years before the battle of Camden.

Wow. I wish I had known about this in time to drive there. What an experience it would have been. My DNA is about 30% Scottish but I have many ancestors who fought for what became the USA. That's probably similar to a lot of the Americans who were attending this.

The Highlanders were bad to the bone. I wonder why the Scottish soldier was not returned to the UK for interment. I mean, it’s an honor to have him here with his American counterparts. And I like that they are going to have a separate area just to honor the Highland soldier and any other British soldiers recovered in future. But I could also understand Britain wanting him back.

I believe that they identified him as a Highlander based on military paraphernalia around him and Colonial around the others.
Between our historical records as well as Great Britain's I am assuming they knew that this particular regiment was documented to be at the Battle of Camden.
They are doing DNA testing on the remains to get more detailed information about them, which will probably take years.
The 14th set of remains they mentioned could not be identified as neither British nor American.
The estimated ages are 40 years old being the oldest and the youngest just 15 years old.
In a Speech at the ceremony which is also on UA-cam another British woman who (I don't remember her title) is based at the Army Base said in her speech, "The United Kingdom matters to the United States and The United States matters to the United Kingdom."
A sentiment that that isn't just between governments but is between our peoples as well.
Any person that dies while fighting for their country deserves to buried with honor and dignity.
The Highlander was doing just that and it's fitting that all should be buried together.
    Another great reaction guys!

With advances in identification of human remains using DNA and other technologies the US military has already indicated that there may never again be a war in which we will recover unidentified remains of a soldier to entomb at the tomb of the tomb of the unknown soldier site in the Arlington national cemetery.

    • @firefighterchick

Yes and the remains of the Vietnam unknown soldier were also later identified through DNA and he then exumed and given a military burial identifying him.
Since there were no other unidentified remains from Vietnam that tomb is marked honoring all MIA/POW through our history that are still missing.

I recently attended a lecture at a local historical society here in Rhode Island. A historian/archaeologist talked about the recovery last year of some human remains at the site of the Battle of Red Bank in New Jersey. This was a minor battle in the successful British campaign to capture Philadelphia in late 1777. Artifacts discovered among the bones show that the soldiers were Hessians. Both a criminal forensic laboratory and military historians in Germany are being consulted. They are hoping to identify both the deceased and living descendants. One reason I enjoy studying history is that we are always learning more.

      That's very cool as well.
The City of Reading in Pennsylvania hosted a prisoner of war encampment of Hessian Soldiers after their surrendered.
The Hessians spoke a language similar to a lot of the city's residents.
Eventually they simply blended in with the population and many stayed and became Americans after the war ended.

It’s really a remarkable story of our shared history, our first civil war remembered.
I was somewhat disappointed that his remains were not repatriated to be reinterred in Scotland. I’m guessing that there wasn’t enough DNA available for genetic testing?
Imagine if he was able to be identified with a match to a Scottish family.
I seem to remember a similar case in the UK some years back matching a school teacher to remains found in a neighboring village, after hundreds of years had passed.
Inspiring story nonetheless, RIP to the fallen.

They did collect DNA from the remains of the soliders. In TV series and the movies they get results quickly but in reality that can take years to process everything and do the following research.
I understand your point though. I'm guessing it was a joint decision between our militaries to preserve history and honor them all.
I'm sure if they ever identify him or at least his clan and they request for him to be repatriated the request would be granted.
