During the skit, Harvey Korman (patient) actually peed his pants by laughing so hard. Tim (dentist) is a comic genius at these skits. During rehearsals, Tim goes by the scripts. Then during audience, Tim adlibbed or improv to break other actors out of their characters.

@@realMaxEffort According to Conway's autobiography everthing up until the mention of Novocaine was scripted. Korman thought the sketch was a dud and didn't want to do it. Conway told him not to worry as he had something in mind. What I find interesting is that after the shot to the head Conway seems uncertain as to where he can go with that and seems to bring the sketch to a rapid end.

The Carol Burnett Show was a staple at our house when I was growing up. These two were regulars and did some genius off-the-cuff comedic work, all in front of a live studio audience. Others have mentioned "The Elephant Story" as one of their best, but my all-time favourite Carol Burnett sketch is "Went With The Wind," a take-off on the classic movie. The sketch included all four regulars from the show, plus Olivia de Havilland as their guest star, and featured the longest audience laugh response of the show's multi-year run. Thanks for the nostalgia hit!
EDIT: Turns out the guest star was Dinah Shore, not Olivia.

I was a kid growing up with this show & always looked forward to the shows Tim Conway (playing the roll of dentist here) appeared in because they were always the best. Carol did a talk show interview & said that during the dress rehearsals Tim would do the run through just as written, but then when they were filming the show in front of the audience, he would go off script & try to get the others to crack up.
It made it so much more fun as a viewer, because EVERYONE is having a good time. The show was always great, but Conway added the wildcard factor. Glad to see people finding this stuff & enjoying it!

The whole crew was hilarious, Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, Harvey Korman (the patient), and Tim Conway (the dentist). You need to look up Tim Conway's elephant story. The backstory for many of these skits is that they would rehearse the skits but then when the live performance occurred Tim Conway would often ad-lib and the rest of them never knew exactly what was going to happen next.

    • @tkdean3934

Almost but not quite. Both shows were taped. The first they called the "dress rehearsal," but it was also recorded. If the dress rehearsal version of a skit turned out better, they would use that for broadcast. Regarding Tim Conway, what would happen is that he would pretty much play the skit "as is" for the dress rehearsal, he would check to make sure that the skit was recorded OK, and then for the second performance, he would do his ad libs.

Tim is so well known for his improvisation, he would often do the sketch one way for rehearsal and then completely differently for the two tapings. The show was run in front of an audience and recorded twice, then they usually picked the best performance or picked based on what fit best for running time. This is why he was so good at breaking up his other cast mates. They didn't know what to expect because he never did it exactly the same way twice.

Another year, Harvey Korman (patient) won the award, and he was accompanied onstage by a forlorn-looking Tim Conway. Some important FYI:
    - These skits were filmed before a live studio audience.
    - During off camera practice, Tim Conway would follow the script as written. Once filming began, Conway would go off script and adlib, causing the other actor(s) to laugh.
    - In "The Dentist", Tim Conway went to the sound department and asked them to make the fly buzzing sound when filming. The other actor, Harvey Korman, had no idea that was going to happen.
    - Harvey Korman later admitted to laughing so hard he actually peed his pants a little during this skit.

Carol once said in an interview that Harvey (the patient) was terrified to work one on one with Tim (the doctor) because Tim took special pleasure in doing whatever he could to get Harvey to break up. The most important thing to remember is this was all done in front of a LIVE audience. There was no "cut" there was no "do-over" so once they were on stage they just had to get through it with one of the best improv comics ever doing his best to sabotage the whole thing.
As others have said you should watch The Elephant Story bit. I've watched it countless times now and I still fight to breathe from laughter every single time. I would say it's Tim's crowning achievement.

This is one of the funniest skits. I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show. Tim Conway was my favorite. He would change & improvise the skits & get everyone to crack up. Poor Harvey Korman is completely losing it.

That's a classic skit. I remember seeing it live when I was a kid. Like @firefighterchick said, Tim Conway (the dentist) was notorious for going off script during a live performance, causing the cast to struggle trying not to laugh. Harvey Korman (the patient) was typically paired up with Conway as a straight man. Another great reaction as usual.

Red Skelton was a guest on that show. He was great at physical comedy too. There was a sketch with Red, Carol, Harvey, and Tim. It turned into a duel between Red and Tim to see who could make the cast laugh the most and longest. It went on for the whole sketch until Carol and Harvey waved white flags. 😂😂😂

Hi Conway (the dentist)'s goal was always to push until he got others to break character, but his ultimate goal was to make Harvey Gorman to just lose it. In this skit, Tim was so good that Harvey peed (urinated) in his pants. He never failed to mention it during any and all interviews. My favorite skit. The next one was a skit based on Gone With The Wind that you have to see.

The Carol Burnett sketches are classics. They would film the entire show twice in front of live audiences and Tim Conway was notorious for improvisation and attempting to have their costars break.
The notorious elephant story is the most infamous and Conway runs the show and the rest of the cast but the underrated Vicki Lawrence has to be credited for actually being able to stay in character and finally break Conway.
    Check out more Carol Burnett.
