Make this a series do minor and diminished as well if you have time! This was really great. It shows the importance of notes and how they interact, when Steve Vai says he would sit on notes for ages and have them “become his friend” get to know those notes. I now know this is the kind of thing he meant. Very helpful Kiko, thanks!
Hi Kiko, You are not only a great guitarist you are a even Greater teacher. If you can teach a 69 year old bass player how to play guitar better you must be a genius. I would love to meet you and just talk about music or jam . You definitely have excellent communication skills. Stay safe and well and have a great 2022. Your the best. Signed John Gregory/Zepbass from Munster Indiana. U.S.A.
I have tons of knowledge in music theory and I played that sort of stuff since I was an amateur but I didn't fully understand it until I was told about things like hybrid chords, polychords, chord scale theory, triad pairs or polytonality. If I had explored only the terrain I was given I would have spent years of using only a very limited approach of tonal harmony with a very strict voice leading. I think that theory brings you to the next level but only when it's combined with a genuine intuition. There are a plenty of things I've found years ago but that I understood in a theorical way much later. I know that at the beginning you're taught theory in a more limited way for historical and pedagogical purposes but you should be told about that. If you tell a kid that he/she (for example) shouldn't writte parallel fifths but you don't tell him/her the whole context he/she, then, will believe that it can't be done no matter what. As Adam Neely says, "a little bit of music theory is dangerous". Only when you learn of a wider context and understand that Bach had very different rules from Stravinsky and both of them from John Coltrane, you actually free yourself from music theory stigmas.
I’ve been playing for about 10 years, and I’m decent, not amazing but I play in a band, we’re putting the final touches on our first album, should be done by Feb. - Mar. But I’m completely self taught (outside of friends giving advice) but never have taken lessons. In those 10 years I’ve watched so many UA-cam videos and I have learned more from 2-3 of these Kiko videos then all of the others combined. Thank you Kiko, you make this look so easy! One day I will be at your level! 🤘🏼😝🤘🏼
So I started playing drums and guitar when I was 5 (got my first drum kit on my 5th birthday) I never took any lessons, so I learned by watching and playing along to my Zeppelin and Kiss Records...(to start) later in life I learned about Hawaiian style guitar c refer reedy to as: Slack Key. Starting with the 6th string D,A,D,A,A,D. Everything I knew about guitar to that point was almost useless, this allowed me to be totally free “Exploration” and play with no rules, no expectations, and no boundaries.. in last September I finally picked up a bass ..(why not?) interestingly 3 weeks later I found myself having a 1 on 1 lesson with non other than Billy Sheehan... this was such a profound experience that I now am completely in love with Bass and everything Bass... I decided that I now after 42 years (on & off) of playing I want to understand music in a different way. So, I’m now teaching myself ...with books, scales I never completely learned & modes... I aim to one day have another lesson with Mr. Sheehan and he see my enthusiasm and improvement... ultimately be in a wiring band and doing what I feel I was born to do. Thank you Kiko for also being an inspiration... if only I could be working with you, it would be an endless education and ultimately I would be a better musician each day
5 minutes in, and this monster of a man sounds better than 14 years of me with just two chords....It takes real talent to take two chords, six notes and play them the way you play...i will do the exercise, even when i play mostly for myself, not thinking of making new music or something, it's just my hobby, but i guarantee i will not sound close to what you sound lol...
I've always been wanting to expand my playing with what I want to play and this really help so thank you so much Kiko your a legend and obviously a guitar legend 🤘🤘🤘
Dall'Italia.... Tanti auguri per un fantastico 2022 Ciaooooo
Good morning sir! How are u? U are such a talented man. I just bought another of ur new albums! I so enjoy getting lost in your sweet Melodie’s, signatures, times, and keys. Thank you sir. Bless u and ur family.
Hugely helpful video! It just goes to show that with the right teacher learning guitar becomes so much easier. Keep it simple and take your time to explore the different sounds your guitar makes. Kiko you are not only one of the greatest guitar players but also a great teacher. Thank you so much.
OMG, Kiko this is one of the most amazing tutorials I have heard, I used a lot of these when I younger, but nobody got the tune, I was around people that didn’t know, I love it, keep on rocking buddy!♥️😎🤪
This is THE GREATEST LESSON on how to understand "the way to learn" music. OBRIGADO !!
Hey Kiko, great video! To get more theoretical :) this concept is called 'triad pairs' right? I was wondering if you could demonstrate how to use these for soloing over changes in a future video? In particular maybe changes that are common in jazz like 2-5-1s.
Very nice Kiko, thank you. You can mention the theory names if you like, just for us to absorb and to get used to it. 🙃 I already used the Bosa Nova in one of my songs, haven't posted yet, bu tit will sound like Eddie Vedder(ich). Very interesting how that song evolved watching your channel, anyways. Greets from Belgium 🙂
Jamiroquai would say"Travelling without Moving..." jajaaj Nice to explore just by enjoying music...is kinda travel and expand your own expression But this that seems so obvious, is what most of us forget (I include myself) ..just because we want to" know".. Or go for a song, we want to learn..but not get in contact with our innate own musicality.. The only teacher I 've seen along the years that really encourages us to do this, is you, Kiko...!! And I'll never be grateful enough ! I really admire, and love you, and your music, and your Megadeth stuff, too.. Thaks, forever! And have a great 2022 , you and your family!
I think I've done this instinctively, and I hear you on the creativity... but I rushed back into playing after 20 years, went out got a Jackson with a FR, I had one before, long time ago, but forgot everything. It sat around not setup. I'd play it but no fun, you gotta know. Finally, I decided to either trade the Jackson and a Gretsch Falcon I have for a different bridge, but I took one last shot, sucked it up, got the tools out, found everything I needed to know on YT, watched the videos. I learned how to set that bad boy up, block it off, and most importantly WHY and HOW it works. I think I'm at that point now with theory... my mechanics and coordination progressed so much because I wasn't concerned with theory for a while. I just wanted that guitar in my hands as much as possible. All day and night some days. I felt like the more I played, the more right I was in the head, and coming from where I did, I'll take it. I was a life long addict. My wife and I got clean together, almost lost our kids at one point and probably would have I'd we didn't have family. This is all so much more to me than music. It's a new and beautiful way to live. Love to you and yours, to everyone out there. Over 5 years clean
It's so intimidating when you hear finished songs and how great they sound! This really helps show the beginning process and it's so wonderfully done! Thank you Kiko!
Great video🔥🤘🏻 becoming comfortable with uncomfortable sounds and training your ear to be accepting of sounds that aren’t very vanilla and may sound dissonant at first are expensive sounds in my opinion.
I've always created music, since the beginning. I was able to create tons of riffs, full songs, solos (It doesn't mean I'm a some kind of virtuoso, I was just having fun). Learning a little bit of music theory gave me tools to be even more creative. But something happened when I started to dig deeply into music theory, I became paranoid about rules, about "right" or "wrong" and how to explain what I was doing, that I wasn't able to create so fluidly like before. So I decided to chill out and let it flow again, be more intuitive like how I used to be. Because in the end it's all about having fun.
I am so grateful for being here on the mudball with you Sir Your gracious nature is so refreshing You are as humble as can be such a rare soul ! You give us so much G_d be with you on your journey may he bless and keep you lovely family as well ! Thank you for the music you not only inspire me you teach me as well . I wish some of our local "shredders " were a 10th of the guy you are .
Allright kiko your on my top 20 list of rock guitarists keep up the hard work ,your a inspiration ,theory and the neck is a somewhat must know ,but imagination and the human ear is the best 👌 to help you on your way to nirvana,
Whoa that's very cool! I loved megadeth as a teenager and now I can learn from megadeth guitarist on UA-cam :D After learning some riffs I realized that I can't really play anything "out of my head". So now I focus mostly on internalizing caged and triads and it is such a simple idea that I can actually include in my practice. BTW I was on your live show in Poland and it was great.
I can’t wait to try this after I get home from my soul sucking retail job. This is probably the most interesting exercise I have ever come across. Thanks, Kiko!
Thank you Kiko! 👍 Just caught this, very useful & perfect for beginners! " Escaping " caught that right away! One of my favorites...Very clever throwing in " Crazy Little Thing Called Love" in there too! 5 riffs / 5 positions.... Great Stuff today! 👍 Many Thanks Kiko! ( I'd love to see you just plug in and play " Black Ice" in this format using basic root notes) Stay safe & try to keep warm! Boa Noite 🖤Kris IL ⚡ ❤

Fantastic Kiko as always! Thank for your contribution to our understand of music, besides theory the feeling is really important! Q&A Btw Kiko, if you have to start learning music today regardless of your age, where would you start?
Thank you so much for sharing this. I have a little question : Among all the wandering you've done all around the neck, you usualy use arpegios and i think you also rely on CAGED shapes for moving the chords on the neck. but, each time, what is your visual/mental landmarks on the neck for each "shapes", i mean, each shape you are doing, which note are you focusing on ? for arpegios, chords ... .. or maybe it's just something that you once worked so many times, you are not even thinking on specific spot to walk through an arpegio or chords all around the neck ?
A lesson in noodling. I love it.

3:15 completely blew my mind.. You are a god Kiko, thank you for sharing this!
I like how you break it down to make it easier to understand...Rock on!

Best Guitarist ever this guy 🧡
Studying some Kiko’s solos , phrasings, licks helps a lot , it helped a lot in my lead compositions.
Musicality improved☑️

Thanks for this, was informative and inspiring. My brain seems to tune out whenever I hear complicated music theory/chord naming progression.
Awesome lesson Kiko. Really great example of focused noodling for generating melody ideas

MUITO incrivel !! Nao sei dizer mais me fez lembrar Eric Johnson.
Thank you for being the best human on the planet.
As a former piano student turned to drums, I find your approach to music (and theory) always helpful. Gifted (and hard worker). Super.

Great video🔥🤘🏻 becoming comfortable with uncomfortable sounds and training your ear to be accepting of sounds that aren’t very vanilla and may sound dissonant at first are expensive sounds in my opinion.
Kiko, a great player… a great mentor 👌
The A-Bb chord change always reminds me of andalusian sounds ;-)
Amazing lesson!

A->B: Kiko, were you channeling Flying in.a Blue Dream there? An excellent lesson, thank you, Kiko. You are always an inspiration.
Awesome!
Interesting way to think. Looking forward for the next one.
Thanks Kiko for the inspiration! That exercise alone justifies the use of a looper 🙂
This video is pure gold. Thanks for sharing Kiko, you're a legend
Great approach and angle to teaching, learning and exploring music. Gotta love Mr. Kiko!!!
7:42 damn, trying really hard to hide the "chromatic" there 😅
Wow this is so cool!!! I was just doing these exact exercises.. learning the sounds… also … I don’t know theory… but I DO know the sounds.
I've been working on the triads and chords, and wasn't sure where to take it next. I will try this approach next :). Thanks for the ideas.

Aula sensacional 👏👏👏
Fantastic Kiko as always! Thank for your contribution to our understand of music, besides theory the feeling is really important!
Q&A
Btw Kiko, if you have to start learning music today regardless of your age, where would you start?
WOW!!! I am "trying" to play along on my Ibanez with Kiko and I swear I just got better. Thanks dude!!!!
Thank you kiko that was very helpfull for me 😊
Thanks for sharing some theory without getting theoretical!
Wow.. I will never find knowledges like this accept here.. TQ kiko 👍

Wooow. This is very very informative. I love how you present it based on feelings/emotions. Thank you so much, Kiko!
its called CR's....chord relationships...movie composers use it a lot
Thank you so much for sharing this. I have a little question : Among all the wandering you've done all around the neck, you usualy use arpegios and i think you also rely on CAGED shapes for moving the chords on the neck. but, each time, what is your visual/mental landmarks on the neck for each "shapes", i mean, each shape you are doing, which note are you focusing on ? for arpegios, chords ... .. or maybe it's just something that you once worked so many times, you are not even thinking on specific spot to walk through an arpegio or chords all around the neck ?
Genial video.
Legenda em português, please! 😁👍🏻
Great as always Kiko!
Kiko amigo eres genial!!
The progression A - B immediately triggered me: "THIS IS FLYING IN A BLUE DREAM!! from Joe Satriani" :D
