I bought a Sig Romeo 5 for a cheap AR build I did a couple of years ago. I've since moved that Romeo 5 to like 5 different guns and beat the ever loving hell out of it. It's still fine. I was really surprised by it. Kinda wish I would've bought a holosun instead just cuz I think that circle dot would be nice for close range but I am using the Sig optic on a much more gucci AR now, I even put it on a Unity mount(that cost way more than the optic lmao). I simply don't give a fuck. It definitely isn't the best optic for NVG use--in fact its probably one of the worst ones. But for regular day time use? Its fine. I may replace it with a Romeo 4T tho.
@@Valorius You cannot beat it for the money. I just wish it had that circle dot although it may be less useful than it seems like it would be. I have it in my head the circle dot would make close range rapid fire very easy, maybe I'm mistaken.

It's probably the last place on a rifle I'd spend serious cash on (beyond a baseline HLX/streamlight)
I think people just need to be honest with themselves about what they need it for. If you are doing home defense in your apartment you don't need a light with 300 yards of throw. And a price tag to match. And almost no one needs 50 m water immersion capability. Which costs a lot to put into a light.
Streamlight hlx ftw! The only thing I dislike about this light is that you lose water proof/resistance rating when switching the button tail cap to the pressure switch cap.
I think crimson trace played around with this a couple years ago, but not very many consumers take them seriously in industry so they didn't get any traction. As for Hop, I agree. His hatred saves me money on things I don't need to buy because they suck. I very much appreciate his hard work.
Ahhh yes. One of the only The UA-cam channels that INFLUENCE THE MASSES based on reasonable & prudent application of gear. I am so tired of the agenda of pushing x product. You guys are so damn reasonable and logical in how you review things & honestly the b-roll in your videos using said item is more ACTUAL USE than many other influencers may have with a product. At the end of the day, you pound home the KEY features of a white light regardless of what year it may be or who’s light is the coolest. This is what’s important. You guys rock
Fun fact, you can convert a regular SF scout tailcap to momentary-only by disassembling it, taking the internal button mechanism and trimming off the nibs that do the latching. I either use that or a UE07 switch on M300c's. I think the 300's (Arisaka/Malkoff included) are the best combo of form and function. Yeah, they don't have a bazillion lumens or candela, but they check the box, have the most mounting options, and don't take up a bunch of space on the gun. And when you push the button you get white light. Yay.
I love the streamlight hlx with the arisaka low profile mlok mount and the arisaka adaptor to use surefire switch. Still comes in at less than a surefire alone. Has worked great.
Thanks for ur setup info I’m looking at getting my buddy a weapon light for Christmas and also trying to keep budget in mind without getting him crap so looking at the stream lights
One tail switch you overlooked is the unity hot button. It's different from the rest because of it being angled rather than flat. However, the mlok version at the 11 oclock position is absolutely perfect for use with a c-clamp grip.
He probably ignored the unity, as in a video he did last year I believe... it isn't a quality enough product just yet to be on the list. The plug is finicky, and hit or miss if it will lock the light turned on, or vice versa. And sometimes you will get intermittent discharge from the light when depressing the button. For some reason, the button does not like playing nice with a bunch of the brands of lights and lasers spoken on
@@Jonah.the.moist.noodle Unity makes the Modbutton lite too. Personally I had two duds shipped to me when ordering my Arisaka light. Fortunately Arisaka was more than willing to make it right by either continuing to send me replacements free of charge, or just refund me. After the 2nd dud I just opted for the refund. Arisaka products themselves are top notch, as is their customer service from my experience.
I’m a huge fan of duel fuel considering the price of cr123’s. I like a rechargeable, but i like the option of having 123’s chilling in my kit for “emergencies”. Great vid. Keep it up!
I’m a fan of the Streamlight Protac rail mount HL-X, mainly due to the output. I can’t afford a PVS-14, so this is how I meet my night shooting needs. I’ve been able to successfully get consistent hits on steel out to 400 yards at night with the HL-X.
Agree. I run the hl-x on a few different long guns. It’s a bad ass light, and it’s affordable enough to put them on every gun I own without having to refi the pad
HL-X is fantastic. The HL-X 2 has a much improved recharging system, although I prefer the 1.0 tail cap when I’m not using the pressure pad. Unlike Hop, I much prefer rechargeable. Rechargeable + some small solar panels = unlimited battery life, and batteries can be topped up at all times rather than worrying about whether or not it’s time to replace a half used battery.
If you just want the regular pad, the Goonbeam lights are upgraded Streamlight HLX body types with Malkoff/Modlight level of throw. So far I have been very happy with them.
@@heyhayhay247 i think they are machining them somewhere and doing the heads themselves. So they are same pattern but not made by SL? Not totally sure.

Cloud Rein is pretty hard to beat for the value if your running white light only. But I get that there are pretty significant limitations to running cloud with an ir/laser.
@@abel4776 ah okay. thats what I have, made by surefire instead of modlite though. oh well, i thought there was going to be another product to consider for future lights lol.
Waiting on the SureFire Turbo series to be released. Duel fuel is a nice feature to have and the performance is most likely similar (with the 18650 / 18350 batteries) to Cloud or Modlite.
@@Valorius depends on the light. Some companies won't reccomend using CR 123A's for their 18650 bodies because it might damage the internals and probably cause an O Light incident. What lights have you been using?
Was literally on the Arisaka site last thinking “I hope someone, especially maybe Hop, would do a video discussing rifle lights.” Honestly building out any option except a Streamlight HLX is just insanely expensive.
If your looking to get something budget there is nothing better than the streamlights I own 3 of them and they are all amazing in terms of quality I just upgraded their mounts and the surefire tail AP adapter on one of them
I would encourage getting the protac and training with it. It’s better to buy more “budget” gear and actually learn how to use it effectively… then in the future upgrade if you’re ready ;)
@@breckfreeride never had any issues with any of my protacs losing connection, at least not yet, maybe im lucky? streamlight also just released a brand new light that has their own upgraded tail cap that matches the surefire style, think its called the protac 2.0
Just remember even if you have a momentary switch or off switch it will not prevent any light refraction from outside sources. Inside the housing of the light head is made very reflective for obvious reasons and some certain groups of people are training to find their enemies via exploiting this. I'd recommend getting a cap for your light as well that way even if you do have a white light ND it adds another layer of fail safe.
There are various rubber bikini type scope caps, specifically the ACOG 4x and Aimpoint ones, that work great for this, just snip off one end leaving a few inches of the side straps and zip tie it to the body of the light. Just give it enough tension that it is out of the way when it’s not in use.
14 years in the Military/25 years as a State Trooper SWAT Team Member, we used Surefire and Streamlight's, they worked well except for the remote switch wire would frequently fail and the lights were heavy!. Now that I am retired all my rifles have Inforce Tactical Lights (integrated switch's and can quickly be removed and mounted on another rifle). I know lots of people say these are no good, but I have run them for 10+ years and the Gen 2's work great.
I was just looking into getting a weapon light for my rifle after saving for a bit, but it's pretty confusing with the different companies, light heads, bodies, caps, etc. Great info and plenty to look into. Thanks!
Been on the force for 8 years and 2 as an RSO. I’ve converted to cloud defensive and haven’t looked back. Phenomenal products and customer service. Great video as usual. No BS, just knowledge.
I’ve watched this like 4 times (pre and post research) its such a helpful video. I got super confused with all the options on Arisaka’s builder, but after doing that and some research into surefire and then watching this video I have a pretty good idea of what my options are at different price points.
The key for this is understanding the role of your weapon and fitting the right light to that. A self defense gun needs more spill than throw, and if you live on a larger property then you might need more throw than spill to identify targets/non targets correctly from a distance.
Really looking forward to the surefire turbos. I love their mounting system on the pro and their flashlights are slimmer and lighter which helps when mounting lasers and a can. Plus I also like that I don't have to use the rechargeable batteries.
I spent several days looking for the "best bang for your buck" wml that was also, in theory, the most size and weight efficient. I too landed on the arisaka 300/malkhoff/ momentary only combo on a picatinny offset mount. 3.52 ounces with mount and battery
Great video! No non-sense, straight to the point. By the way if you hate Cloud Defensive switches, EchoArms recently introduced a light body for REIN heads that takes Surefire tailcaps. Still require rechargeable battery, but it's a step in the right direction (in terms of cross-compatibilities). Thanks!!
I have the Surefire Scout M600 DF, it's a great light. It's 1500 lumen when used with the Surefire 18650 Hi-Cap battery, it has some really good reach with a wider beam. Perfect in conjunction with a LPVO. Having the option to use 2 CR123A batteries (1000 lumen) as back up is invaluable as well. The quick detach screw is nice, if I need to use it as a standard flashlight. Just very good all around, a bit pricey, but worth it imo, highly recommend.
I really appreciate the depth of thought and the rigor of testing you employ in your videos. As a person who has only recently entered the gun world, I've learned an alarming amount from your content. Having said that, the most striking thing to me about the gun community is the financial logic it uses. We're talking about HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS for a flashlight. Not just a flashlight, but one that you will use "for as little as possible, as quickly as possible." It's like spending a million dollars for a Bugatti, but only using it to get to the end of the driveway to collect your mail. It's probably because i'm not that far into it yet.....
The lightbar is a cantilever mount meant to push the light out past the end of the handgaurd, primarily for use with suppressors to avoid casting shadows in the beam. Arisaka doesn't offer anything that does that. Not better or worse, but if you want something that does that, the Lightbar is your only option.
Great break down. I just recently purchased a SF DUAL FUEL. I went with the 00 tail cap, due to the low output of the regular plug in without the button. It was odd, but I really wanted the 00 anyways for the backup button. Just didn’t want to spend the extra till the basic cap didn’t work right. But I would like the okw head or the Arisaka head. Cause my cheap “not cheap” olight has way better throw. But I don’t like the olight for many reasons. The only thing it has going for it, is that it is easy to use as a hand held light with its quick release mount. It was my first real weapon light. That I quickly regretted buying.
I really enjoy my cloud defensive. I just stock up on 18650's. I'm sure cloud will make a dual fuel model in the future but for now I love my cloud. Honestly as long as the light is one of the 5 listed you can't go wrong. I have 3 streamlights HLX and 1 surefire m600. I just prefer cloud.
I love the fact that you unapologetically say it’s a NutnFancy SPR build. He’s fallen out of vogue, if he ever was, with your gen of shooters, but that SPR video still holds up. I did my own NutnFancy SPR build in 2013 and it’s still my fav overall AR. Great vid on lights.
After dropping so many countless thousands on NV and thermal and a solid ballistic helmet along with the IR laser/illumination device looking into which flashlight to get seems so casual, but I do want the best. Thanks for the video hop!.
Surefire scout with vampire head has been my go to. Good white light and plenty of IR illumination to supplement a PEQ or use with a laser only unit like a perst 4.
@@no-sway3709 Yeah I have one of the newer gen 3 green models. Hence me trying to find a solid independent white light for the last space left on my rails. I'm just happy Hop is around so I can get more neutral and non-bias objective opinions on these types of accessories. Out of curiosity if your using a Perst 4 laser only unit what do you use for your IR illumination?.
@@yakivpopavich I use a surefire scout. It has a vampire head that you twist to select Vis or IR. I prefer the perst 4 + scout over a peq alone because the IR illum from the peq illum has more artifacts, is relatively weak (civvie power) and there are many situations where you want laser only but also have the option of intermittently using IR illum.
I cannot stress this enough. When buying rechargeable 18650s, buy from a reputable website and brand. Also do some extra homework on 18650s in general because there are different kinds that serve a specific task better.
Hop- thanks for this video. I’ve been looking to get into a Scout for a build but couldn’t justify $500-$600 once adding tape switch, tailcap, mount, etc. The Arisaka website saved me a bunch of money, and I wouldn’t even known that was an option without this video. Mostly a Streamlight guy here for most carbines and handguns (no love for the TLR RM1 & RM2?) and cracked up at your Olight comment. Admittedly have two in the collection as well, PL Pro Valkyrie one of the home defense handguns (for the quick release) and an Odin shared between AR builds (like the quick release M-Lok mount and momentary variable tailcap- easy to swap between builds). No question they aren’t up to par with the rest of the brands, but I wish other brands would take notice of some of the features they have- I’m glad they are at least willing to innovate. For less serious builds, the features may outweigh the quality, especially the ability to share a light easily. Anyways, thanks again! Was glad for an excuse to add a scout style light to the collection!
I went with Elzetta because their flood lens is amazing. My set up is for home defense and I found it to be the best in lighting up a room with no hot spots.
I don’t have that much interest in weapon lights, other than the ones that have been proven durable and highly rated on a website. But I love your thorough reviews and you keep the subjects interesting. Now.. if only you would do some sort of AK rifle or gear review.. 😊
@@grantmitchell3530 For good reason. In the US market, they represent a worse value. More cost, less capability and compatibility, and susceptible to parts/ammo import bans.

Can't speak for the other companies, but the reason I go Surefire is their after service and warranty... You're not kidding about Arasaka's 300 series light builder. Best $200 I ever spent that didn't go directly into the rifle itself. The throw on this Malkoff is insane, I can count the bricks on the front of a house 200 yards away with one CR123.

As someone in law enforcement, the go to has always been Streamlight for handguns. Bought an HLX for my old patrol rifle and loved it enough to put one on my 11.5" AR pistol. My old patrol rifle has the standard rail mount and the 11.5 has an Arisaka offset scout mount. My new patrol rifle is department provided and has an HLX with the standard mount. They aren't fancy, but they just fucking work. Never had a problem with Streamlight lights.
@Hoplofheil Great video. Point of interest, there are Administrative lights and Combative lights. Everyone should have both, especially cops. All weapon mounted lights are combative lights. Administrative lights are for, “License and registration” and searches not involved in emergency situations. Again, thanks for the video and your input and for not listing olight.
I like the Olight Warrior X Pro. Tail switch or pressure pad, press and hold for momentary or click for constant. Good throw and flood, very bright, 18650 with magnetic tail charging.

The M640V Pro is in all reality a really good deal for what it’s capable of. For the price you get a bomb proof dual output light (that works amazingly under NODs) and hangs with the big dogs as a white light, has a very useable mount and a true momentary on/off tailcap. And it’s remarkably low on battery drain when used in IR. Im surprised more companies haven’t tried to make their own offerings. Yes it’s $430 (the 300V @$400) but you don’t really need to spend any extra money to get it to mount where you want and activate it in a ergonomic and intuitive fashion. I’ve loved mine.
Nobody makes a good light. it does not cost hundreds of dollars to make an LED flashlight. its something that should cost $50 max yet they're being sold for the better part of $1000. just insanity. even stream light is stupid expensive.

Very informative. I love to build all my gear to suit. Just bought 300 lumine Energizer pocket light (1 cr123) the UTG M-lock mount. I drilled a hole in the tail cap and went all 1980 LA PD swat style and made my own tape switch with the inards of a doorbell and a whole lot of heat shrink. A tad cludgy. However it works and only cost. Light $9.99, mount $14.99, doorbell $9.99, wire I had, shrink tub 6.99, solder + odds and ends $5.00. So $46.00. I get board easily.
I have 1 modlight that stays put on an sbr but for every other rifle with a light it's going to be the streamlight 1k lumen / higher candella model that comes with the pressure switch. I've beat the hell out of the streamlights and the only issue I've ever had was from improperly running the cables through the cloud defensive lcs system by pinching the cable without noticing. Completely ruined the cable, contacted streamlight and they sent an entirely new cable system for free and for some odd reason threw in a tlr1 hl front glass and bevel attachment which was really odd since I never requested anything like that lol. My primary use for my lights are for inside my own home. The streamlight hlx candella throw is pretty much perfect for around the house and barn, even during daylight. We get a crap load of coyotes here near the Appalachian trail, especially trying to get into our small livestock areas and chicken pens. If it's pitch black I'll use the streamlight since I'm not taking shots any further than 150 yards but during dusk and early night I like using the modlight. Don't tell my neighbors but I've been using IMI M193 for the coyotes with better success than any of the varmint rounds I've tried. The coyotes ain't worth using my bonded gold dots on.
I've bought two Streamlights (ProTac and ProTac HL-X). The first is weapon mounted and the second is hand-held. I've used the weapon mounted for maybe 10 hours and the handheld for two years. Both costs roughly $150. The handheld Streamlight ProTac randomly fails to turn on about 1 in 40 times. To power on the light when it's not activating, unscrew the battery cap then screw it back on again. Then it works normally until the next random failure. The chaotic nature of the handheld Streamlight makes me distrust all their weapon mounted lights.

I prefer my switches on the light itself I hate tape switches
If they still had a button you can press like that one Surefire tailcap, it probably wouldn't be too bad.
I think crimson trace played around with this a couple years ago, but not very many consumers take them seriously in industry so they didn't get any traction. As for Hop, I agree. His hatred saves me money on things I don't need to buy because they suck. I very much appreciate his hard work.

I picked up a 340V for IR and off mode capability but I wasnt aware of Arisaka's builder. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you for breaking this down in an actually usable way. I'm probably gonna continue being a streamlight pleb, but thanks hop.
One tail switch you overlooked is the unity hot button. It's different from the rest because of it being angled rather than flat. However, the mlok version at the 11 oclock position is absolutely perfect for use with a c-clamp grip.
This
He probably ignored the unity, as in a video he did last year I believe... it isn't a quality enough product just yet to be on the list. The plug is finicky, and hit or miss if it will lock the light turned on, or vice versa. And sometimes you will get intermittent discharge from the light when depressing the button. For some reason, the button does not like playing nice with a bunch of the brands of lights and lasers spoken on
@@Jonah.the.moist.noodle I'm using it on my surefire scout 300 and haven't had issues. Maybe it is not as good with modlites or DFs

Arisaka makes a dual fuel flashlight. It is pretty neat
Also, streamlights customer service is unmatched
HL-X is fantastic. The HL-X 2 has a much improved recharging system, although I prefer the 1.0 tail cap when I’m not using the pressure pad.
Unlike Hop, I much prefer rechargeable. Rechargeable + some small solar panels = unlimited battery life, and batteries can be topped up at all times rather than worrying about whether or not it’s time to replace a half used battery.
The trex mounts are actually made by Arisaka now, you can see their logo on the example you put in the video
If you just want the regular pad, the Goonbeam lights are upgraded Streamlight HLX body types with Malkoff/Modlight level of throw. So far I have been very happy with them.

I'd recommend getting a cap for your light as well that way even if you do have a white light ND it adds another layer of fail safe.
Risky Christy brought this up. Got two caps for my surefires.
There are various rubber bikini type scope caps, specifically the ACOG 4x and Aimpoint ones, that work great for this, just snip off one end leaving a few inches of the side straps and zip tie it to the body of the light. Just give it enough tension that it is out of the way when it’s not in use.
I use the Butler Creek flipable scope caps on all my rigle lights. They work great

Your presenataion is most illuminating, Hop. Seriously thought the breakdown of each brands MO is perfection.
Thanks!
Wow, this has to be the best weapon light video I have seen. You are going to save a lot of people from some headaches that's for sure. Thank you Hop!
Been on the force for 8 years and 2 as an RSO. I’ve converted to cloud defensive and haven’t looked back. Phenomenal products and customer service. Great video as usual. No BS, just knowledge.
Probably the best, most informative of the "rifle light" videos. Good job!
Hop is the “America’s Test Kitchen” of the gun world. Amazing presentation. All the info I need and nothing I don’t. Wonderful.
Really looking forward to the surefire turbos. I love their mounting system on the pro and their flashlights are slimmer and lighter which helps when mounting lasers and a can. Plus I also like that I don't have to use the rechargeable batteries.
Really enjoy these mid length mellow videos.
I spent several days looking for the "best bang for your buck" wml that was also, in theory, the most size and weight efficient. I too landed on the arisaka 300/malkhoff/ momentary only combo on a picatinny offset mount.

Olight obviously… 0:17 lol
Lights are F-ing to much
I've bought two Streamlights (ProTac and ProTac HL-X).
