I have an appointment for adoption in April, I plan on buying everything there to support the rescue. I have my heart set on two girls. I’m so excited to meet you all and I hope y’all like cupcakes!
Always sound advise. This is very good information as we know guinea pigs can hide how they feel, but they can't hide their breathing so this issues can be a very good way to gauge health and the need for a vet appointment .
This was so informative. I checked my pigs right after watching this and found one of my girls breathing differently than the other two. She was breathing like Fyre was the last time we saw her (head rocking a little and the breaths more pronounced on her sides.) Never noticed it before and I don’t know how long she’s been doing it. She’s close to 6 now so I don’t know if it’s something or simply age-related. I have a trusted cavy vet so I’ll be setting up a visit. Thank you so much for posting. Excellent information. ❤️
This was so helpful! I have two piggies and I have always thought that their breath was pretty fast. But this video assured me that their rate of breath is normal. Thank you, Saskia! :)
Did you notice that both the breed are similar to the hard breathing? I have the same looking pig as the white and redish brown colors. He is so cute with the most personality. I was able to finally get my Santa Fe piggies adopted. I give you props Saskia.... For the amount of Guinea Pigs you care for. The time and cost to each life is priceless to us but, in reality is not cheap if you care for them like you do!
I rescued 2 females on Monday. 3 or 4 months old I think. I am their 4th home already. They are quiet and seem healthy. In a smaller cage for this week but tomorrow we get coroplast, ect to make a crate from wire squares 2 x 6 with a ramp and a second level 2 x 2. We will have room to rescue other girls if necessary. They’ve had limited vegetables but have put on weight this week. I have material to make them fleece liners and accessory. I’m so excited. Thank you for all you do
Saskia, I am so grateful for you and how informative you are. My husband and I are relatively new to this, and we're learning as we go, researching like crazy, to make sure our herd is safe and healthy. Thank you for doing what you do.
Irene - totally didn't thank you yet for the huge bag of flakes in the package you sent!! OMG all the piggies love it so much, such a treat for them. Thank you, so very sweet!
My buddy is going to the vet tomorrow because I noticed his harder breathing. The good thing is that he eats and drinks and stands up to see you. What actually made me check/notice was that he isn't as rambunctious as usual. He's not lethargic either. When I usually hold him well...he's a pain in the ass and lately he just easier to hold.
As a former Respiratory Therapist who now forgot much of what I did know, thanks for showing the respiration of piggies. I really liked the before and after shots so the breathing can be contrasted in Fyre and the others.
Thank you so much! This was super helpful I was worried that my piggies were all sick cause of their breathing but this helped me see it was normal. Thank youu
Thank you for this informative video. One of my piggies breathes a bit like the fluffy cream piggy at 5:21. I have also found an information sheet about heart disease by your vet online and that would explain quite a few issues my piggy has, including her chronic 'allergies' that won't go away, even on fleece bedding and with dust-free hay, and her pododermatitis. She has never been very active, but as I'd been told her breed (Swiss Teddy) is much calmer and lazier than other breeds, I hadn't thought it was a symptom of anything. I'll start looking for a vet here in The Netherlands that is knowledgeable about heart disease in piggies.
So sad for star and the other older piggie that was in this video. From my experience not much can be done to help them and the kindest thing is often putting them to sleep but if this is the case at least they wont be suffering any more I guess 😭 xxx
Thanks Saskia, another great video. I watch my girls breathing all the time, and I listen to them on the guinea pig phone as well. You know it woukd be awesome if you could somehow get a recording of a good vs bad sounding lungs. Maybe Dr Kanfer can help with that.
Thank you so much for this video! My Charlie is being treated for a persistent rattle and I'm so afraid to find him in labored breathing that I sometimes imagine it. This video with normal breathing examples really helps. Thanks a lot.
Hi, Saskia! We have a young guinea pig (around 2 months) that we rescued from our neighbor's cat a little under two weeks ago. Her breathing looks like Nicoletta's. She kind of has that panting breathing and her head bobs slightly. I was debating wether or not to take her to the vet, but I think I definitely will now. Thank you for posting such helpful information, I couldn't find this anywhere else. :)
I had some guineas with heart desease. When this piggies looks like this they haven't much time to live. Often the owner sees it to late. In a live i talked to saskia about that. Here is the standard that guineas become no health check when they looks healthy. After this conversation i learned for me that i will make health checks then too in future especially for the heart issues. Maybe it would be treat earlier and the piggies can live longer without this hard breathing.
I've never thought of that! 🤔 I am always checking their breathing but didn't realize it actually tells something even without any odd noises and stuff. 😳 This is good to know!! I better go check my babies. ❤️
My guinea pig was breathing loud last night and I heard it again just now but he seems happy and energetic and it's usually when he's excited for food or something. I was crying because I don't want to see him sick and I can't afford taking him to the vet right now.
Super important topic thanks for sharing this! I lost a young guinea only 6 months old who had pneumonia and my local vet missed this sign and by the time I found an exotic vet who was more specialized it was too late. He only had 10% of his lungs and couldn’t make it through treatment.
My ~3 month old boy’s head bobs as he breathes. He stayed overnight in emergency on oxygen about a month ago and we gave him antibiotics for a URI. Even after the 10 days on treatment, his head still bobs. Took him to his regular vet who said he doesn’t notice anything bad when listening to his breath. Told us to change his bedding from aspen shavings to fleece. Hoping it clears up from that because I hate seeing him uncomfortable:(
It’s just like with humans: watching the work of breathing. What is the normal respiratory rate of an adult pig? Thank you Saskia! I’ve learned so much from you which I’m passing onto my UK piggy pals. Lots of love 💕
I would be so much more than willing to fly from Florida to LA just to have one of you look at one of my girls who has had breathing problems since I got her. She's still under a year old and I've ruled out respiratory and allergies. You guys aren't vets, but you've seen a lot more than most of the vets around my area. I feel like if you can tell by looking at her what may be wrong I can finally go to a vet and do something to help her. She eats and acts very healthy, loves to run around. It's just heartbreaking to hear her sniffling and sneezing for unknown reasons.
This is such an interesting and informative video! I've saved it to watch again if/when I need a reference for what good breathing looks like. I know when Pepper got Congestive Heart Failure I'd taken her to the vet because her breathing was so hard compared to my other piggies. It is important you pointed out what is normal for Fire because I know any pre-existing condition can cause breathing issues. One of my girls breathes a bit harder than the others and it's because her lungs have some kind of defect my vet says she was likely born with. I watch her breathing closely because although my vet assured me, twice, that it's not any type of lung cancer I'm a bit paranoid it might be.
Just lost one of my boys this past week... He seemed fine up until the night he passed. He was breathing very quickly around 4 pm and was shaking with the head bob. All the vets around me were closed or were not taking piggies which was very frustrating to me because nowadays it's like I can't find any vet that will take me. So after a few hours, he passed away. The internet was suggesting pneumonia but idk how he could have gotten that. All my other piggies are fine and my piggy that passed had no symtoms until that night. Are runny eyes a symtom of heart failure? He didn't have that until his breathing started. Thanks.
My guinea pig died February 13. He wasn’t breathing too good and he was 1 degree colder then it should be. His heart wasn’t beating well, and it wasn’t beating fast enough.
I need help quick my guinea pig is breathing weird and I can’t take her to the vet till the morning please help what should I do I think she has a URI what do I do till I can get her to the vet
My guinea pig, when she was young, had a uri and there was no fluid in her lungs. The antibiotics helped, but now, every now and then it's like her sinuses bother her and it's like she has a runny nose. And her sides breathe like how you showed. Then after a few minutes she'll be fine. I usually turn on the humidifer when I notice her having problems.
I love all your videos but I have two Guinea pigs that I can’t have any any more but if you can get them they have to stay together they are brother and sister
One of my boys is breathing like this. I have no vets experienced with piggies in my area, I took him in a few months ago to be told he was perfectly healthy and it was probably just spring allergies (he sounds slightly wheezy with each breath). Can anything be done to help piggies who get like this? Antibiotics or anything?
Do you think one should video your piggies breathe to show the vet? When you bring them in they will not be calm so the vet will not see what you observed while the piggies were calm. Also you look great in this morning light. 🎥
Saskia, could you do a small update on this showing normal breathing for skinny pigs? I feel you always see some movement with the hairless babies. Also, is it possible for guinea pigs to snore?
Poor Star, can she be on Lasik to help her body flush the excess fluids? I ask because I went through it and I relate to that Precious girl. Also, I thought for sure that the piggie with the whole in his nose would have been a little better by now. I expected the hole to close up some by now. Does the hole go all the way through her palate and into her mouth or is it only in the nasal passage?
Fyre has a hole in the bones of her face, likely caused by a trauma of some sort. It will not get better. The vet flushed the area and cleaned it up real good, she has been on multiple antibiotics and that did help, the mucus is no longer yellow in color.
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue as for Fyre, i didn't know the whole was through the bone. I'm not familiar with the facial struction as far as what's bone and what might be just cartilage or tissue. So I had hoped her skin would eventually close over the opening. What she needs is reconstructive surgery with a tiny titanium plate over the hole. If cost were no object and the success rate was 100% then of course but tgen reality hits. I understand, she'll just have to be the special needs piggie that needs helps picking her nose 😉 and I apologize if you did cover this in a video, I rely heavily on subtitles but they aren't always 100% accurate. Hopefully Star can get something to relieve the congestion. I really know how she feels, trying to breath but your lungs won't expand and your heart can't pump for the same reason. It's like an elephant is sitting on your chest. I know
Excellent video, very helpful. My 2 yr old Bailey is happy and healthy but I have had a few piggies over the years that had respiratory problems and the breathing difficulty is heartbreaking. Baytril was what the vet gave but it didn’t always cure them. I follow your recommendations now. More medical related comparisons please! Also how about a video about what NOT to feed. Great video! I always stop and watch guinea pigs breath at the pet shop whenever I am in there so I can alert the staff of sick piggies. It's shocking how many I've found that way. Also, random question: has the vet ever recommended nebulizer treatments for piggies with chronic respiratory problems? If so did you find them effective?
