@@mitchellbailey6258 Yeah the rain was genius it looks good and it hides the flaws. Honestly I think it looks better than some of the stuff that came after it in my opinion it’s the most graphically impressive third party game this generation
I love how Batman’s “non-lethal” approach to dealing with criminals in the Batmobile is to launch them 50 ft in the air with crazy jolts of electricity
Hes like a bite from a rattler... Not much point in living if itel just be in debt for the antivenom these days.. Seen that ruin people financially to the point of homelessness
In the Batgirl DLC Harley actually says something like this. If you take out a goon she says "You know he didn't have any insurance? If he doesn't die from brain trauma in the hospital...the bill from Gotham General will!"
I loved this game, only issues was deathstroke, I was so excited to have another go at that fight with the new combat but nope tank fight and then a cutscene
Batman arkham origins handled the batman vs deathstroke very good imo. Although the game isn't really loved, it had amazing boss fights that even arkham knight couldn't do, which were kinda underwhelming.
I kinda wanted a part 2 of the Arkham Origins Deathstroke fight... But With Rocksteadys own little mix up thrown in there... I just think it was dumb to do a boss fight that was a copy of the red hood tank battle earlier in the game
Initially, when the game released you could only play as one pre-determined character on each challenge map and didn't have the choice to switch characters. But after backlash from fans, they let you switch characters on every map. So you have the fans to blame for your pain.
@@EmotionTheory yup, the way i see it the only reason its hell to complete is because the devs were thinking of a fun casual experience and not a die hard completionist one. Wich is valid af
Well when it comes down to it, it's both a yes and no, depending on how daunting the game is he might just change the rules to ease himself, after all he is still concerned with his health, and we are too. Aslong as he doesn't hurt himself or the others around him, I think he can continue this job of his. His goal after all is to give us a great story we can somewhat be involved in, and all of us want a happy ending.
This game's graphics are absolutely mindblowing, like how is a game made on Unreal 3 5 years ago still looks better than almost all the other games in 2020?
The relief I felt when I went into NG+ and saw that I didn’t have to find all of the riddles and riddler trophies again is truly the best feeling and it can’t be stopped.
@@doginhat13 yeah true, and they’re decent games in their own right. It’s just it stands better as the main games in its own series and these two as spinoffs
@@geoffdb8118 not that much. I didn't complete them, and I only did the story on normal + all the side quests except those concerning Riddler's trophies. I had a lot of time, not a hyperbolic time chamber lol
The thing that fascinates me the most about the series and this game in particular is the sheer amount of dangerous criminals confined in the one area that simply refuse to swear. "Aw Crap" "It's the freakin bat!"
On release, it was reviled. It was BSoDing peoples PCs, constant crashes, there was issues getting refunds, and something about the special editions was extra scummy. It was a while ago, so im wracking my memory, but it was something like the special edition costing more, but not actually including the season pass.
My favorite part of this game were the stories from the riddle and talking to the villains after catching them. I especially love that the dialogue changes when Batman's secret identity was outed
Do you mean as in a second playthrough? I'm asking because I have it but haven't played it yet but isn't his identity not revealed till the end of the game?
If you think about the Bat-Tank in context of a Batman who is slowly being taken over by the Joker, subtly whispering in his ear to be more ostentatious and violent over the years between City and Knight then yeah it makes sense, at least to me. I just wish Rocksteady gaves us a great Deathstroke boss fight instead of a reskin of a tank battle we've already done. That and Riddler in a mech suit is just kinda dumb.
I love your theory. Υοu want to know what’d be even better? If the Deathstroke fight was split into two parts. The tank battle of course being the first part, and then a proper fight after he jumps out of the tank. I agree, though the notion of Riddler fighting Batman in a mech fits with how mentally unhinged the former is.
@@ethanator6015they dropped the ball with the bosses, the Arkham Knight should’ve been the hardest boss fight in the series, he knows all of your moves, all your gadgets, and how to counter them, it should’ve tested the players stealth and combat abilities
Two flaws in your theory: 1) Batman only started having Joker in his mind in Knight. Not in City and not before Knight, only in Knight and even then it was only a few hours into Knight 2) He starts using the Batmobille way before he gets joker in his mind. He starts using it very close to the beginning of the game and Joker only gets in his mind about an hour or so into the game
It wasn't that he was just loosing control. There was a reason for his increase in violence. He was afraid. The whole game, the main villain and visions of joker all were part of the story which dealt with Batman's fear. An interesting question to tackle in a story in my opinion. What does the Batman fear?
My biggest problem with this game was the lack of solid encounters with Batman's Rogues Gallery. Every game before it had some memorable and incredible fights, including Arkham Origins. But in this one, it was all nearly non-existent, and the boss fight against Deathstroke, one of the best hand to hand combatants in the DC Universe, was relegated to a tank battle. Very disappointing for me, but it still wasn't a horrendous game by any means. Just didn't live up the standards of the previous entries.
and that be Jirard's point as well, Arkham Knight was faced with an impossible challenge of living up to Arkham City's HIGH bar, yet still innovate and surprise everyone, something that... honestly in the eyes of fans... is even more daunting than Bruce's crusade to see a peaceful Gotham.
@@UltimateGamerCC Haha exactly. Though in the end I tend to favor Asylum over City but that's a much more personal basis. That being said, I also haven't gotten around to watching the video yet 🤣
@@leifhelland6313 but those weren't boss style battles. Now a nice blend of those and then actual fighting showdowns like we got in the other games would have been incredible.
"I'm not afraid" is my favorite Batman moment of any medium anywhere. It just so personifies his ability to never back down and persevere. Mixed with Kevin Conroy, just gives me goosebumps every time.
I randomly bought this during a period of not having work for a couple months and was shocked after playing it that I had never heard of it. Unbelievable, to the point I have suggested it some friends, but they haven't played it as I know they probably underestimate it in the same way I did before....and so it continues.
@@patrickryan4933 worst in the series ? No way man I’m glad you still had fun though but this game gets a lot of underserved hate my least favorite is Arkham Origins.
First i want to apologize for my English, I´m from Argentina. I'm really glad you enjoyed it, but i wanted to clarify, at least from the perspective of a huge Batman fan. It's not the mechanics of the Batmobile that ruined my experience, it´s the excess of it. It doesn't feel like a Batman game with the Batmobile, it feels like a Batmobile game with Batman. Characters like Riddler or Deathstroke change their entire modus operandi to force the player into the car. It really seems like Batman is a complete incompetent who cannot take two steps without having to get in the Batmobile for some absurd reason. When I thought of a Batman game with the Batmobile I thought of chases, transportation and some puzzles, yes, but not this degree of dependence. Added to that a plot that doesn't make much sense when you think about it, with two lackluster main villains (Scarecrow and Arkham Knight), and it really left me disapointed. And I kid you not, as a kinda completionist myself (not at your level, of course) my favorite part of the game were the challenges, because I got to play as my favorite members of the Batfamily that I think all the Arkham games have underutilized. Sorry for the essay
I remember completing this game. It will forever hold a special place in my heart, in actually came bundled with my brand new PS4 back in the day. Sure a few trophies, for example the one where you have to fly under 3 bridges in one go, the ABC brutality one and sometimes the Batmobile AR challenges were a pain in the ass sometimes, but damn it was also so much fun completing this one. I maybe even go back and recomplete it, been a while since.
late to the party, i know but here goes, arkham knight depends how much you like the batmobile, and to me was ok, but after a while kind get in the between me and fun, and the combat with it even at the hardest difficulty personally was at most : okay. but if for you guys playing with it is fun More Power for you , have fun
Everytime he says there's 4 games in the series I have to remind myself that people tend to forget Arkham Origins Blackgate is a thing and it's not half bad either.
This game blows my mind. It's so good. The best parts are the batmobile/tank, option of preferred Batman suit, and Riddler challenges. Of course, fighting modes have always been my favorite in the series. I'm just saying that those Riddler challenges are downright GENIUS.
I personally don't think any one Arkham game is objectively better than the other since each one has a specific field they specialise in. That being said, my favorite would have to be Arkham Knight. I'm not blind to it's issues but it just ticks off a lot of the right boxes for me.
A couple thoughts, as someone who thought Arkham Knight was only an ok game. The reason people were angry about the cutscene being locked behind completion was the riddler trophy that would get glitches, and couldn't be fixed without restarting the game. The reason people didn't like the bat mobile was because it takes up over half the playtime of the main game. And the reason I didn't much care for the game was the lack of fun bossfights in the main storyline. Seriously, the only one I enjoyed was the helicopter one, because that was before I was burnt out with the batmobile. Should be noted I was going to complete this game, but then the riddler trophy glitch happened, I called bs, then dropped the game after finishing the main story.
A couple thoughts as someone who thinks this game gets way too much hate. Firstly, while the ending is locked behind collectables, it makes sense for the story, no way would Batman "retire" while any supervillain was still around. Secondly, the ending you get without the Knightfall protocol is still a completely viable ending I'd say, the Knightfall one is just a badass tease for 100%ing the game. I don't think locking it behind the trophies was a bad idea. And with the Glitches some get with the Riddler trophies, it sounds like it did you dirty, which is an unfortunate thing absolutely. I didn't have any glitches happen to me personally. And with the Batmobile thing, that's just plain wrong. "ThatBoyAqua" did a video of this game, and after 100%ing it, dlc included, he counted the time he used the Batmobile and it was more like a quarter. Even less if you're talking about the moments you HAVE to be in it. Even then, the Batmobile mechanics work fantastically still, while I admit I prefer Batman's gameplay, the Batmobile makes sense, and still provides a good challenge. My primary flaws are the Arkham Knight being a whack ass character, the lack of good bosses and some underwhelming side-missions. So I agree with you in those aspects. But I think the game provides the most polished gameplay I think I've ever seen in a game, as well as a fantastic representation of an angry, beaten down Batman. The focus on his mental instability is so well done, as is his connection with The Joker.
@@ThelateDomC. you’ve replied to this better than anyone could have and were respectful the whole time, both of great points! (It feels like I’m a teacher right now) As a kid growing up with the Batman Arkham games playing them I’ve never felt like one was really “the worst” there were just some I played more than others. When I was younger I didn’t like Arkham Asylum because it’s scared the shit outta me, which is funny now. I don’t think Arkham Knight OR Arkham Origins should be as disliked as they are. This video out it best because of the expectations fans had and hype there was no way most of us could have gotten the game we were all dreaming of. That being said though, now years later we look back on these games fondly and while we have had troubles with the game/s, we can still enjoy all of the fun it gave us! So while we all have our own way of looking at these games, we can all agree that they won’t be forgotten anytime soon!
@@ThelateDomC. with the batmobile maybe it just felt like it took up so much time because most of the main story bosses use it. Also I do still love this game, it just happens to be my least favorite of the 4. Never got to play the dlc for it sadly. Now with that all out of the way, to respond to the last point you made: The game was definitely not polished when I played it (on launch) and it still didn't feel polished after a few weeks. I should probably replay it to experience it's modern state, but I remember frame drops, crashes, and glitches galore, and I wasn't even on the PC version that supposedly was even worse.
This game is underrated af its got perfect graphics, more playable characters and perfect combat and predator sections than any arkham game. Also the grapnel boost is fricking awesome just saying
Except the story is trash, tank battles are stupid (I'm playing Batman not World of Tanks), boss fights suck, and they lied about The Arkham Knight being an original character. Also if you've ever read a Batman comic you'll see the Jason Todd twist coming a mile away.
@Jay Bradley yh I know but people saying that it's the worst in the series is just wrong. It's better than origins and I liked it more than than asylum as well (but not more than city)
@@enemystand2981 Arkham Knight was lacking heavily on boss fights and I wish after you finish the game switch from night to day/night. I think it would've been perfect. Oh well still an amazing game tho.
Yeah I live scarecrow, and honestly I wish there were more dynamic boss fights. The scarecrow challenge race maps were so god damn fun to do and I wished that they were in the main game, because that would have made the gameplay be more fun which I’m sure we all want.
I loved Telltale's version of Batman. After having so many games where you play as just Batman, it was very refreshing to have the chance to be both Bruce Wayne and Batman, especially when we get to choose which persona to use. Arkham was a neat villain with an identity that you didn't see coming, but season 2 was just so much better and it looked like Telltale was heading into a new, better direction until they went bankrupt and were bought by someone else.
In all honesty, I don’t think that rocksteady thought of the Arkham Knight’s identity as a twist. I think they thought of the joker thing as the big twist, and Jason’s still being alive is used to have more of a psychological effect on Batman’s character than be a shocking twist to players
@@bounderby99 Mhhh I don't think that's so true. When they showed off the game for the first time, a lot of comic-savvy people jumped to the conclusion that the Arkham Knight was Jason Todd, only to be told from interviews that the Arkham Knight "is an all-new character" and when questioned about if there's any Batman stories they're taking as inspirations, they just kinda evaded the question saying that "they're creating their own mythos" I feel like if you didn't count on the Arkham Knight to be as big of a twist you wouldn't just straight up lie to the people that have already figured it out Really makes me wonder if it would've helped the game's reception if they had just called the character Red Hood from the start
@@bounderby99 oh they DEFINITELY intended the identity to be a twist. You have the first act introducing the Arkham Knight. He mentions how he knows "everything about Batman" in detail. Then there is the Jason Todd thing which is supposed to deepen the mystery...and slowly before the Arkham Knight is revealed...his suit becomes more and more red. Until the "big" moment where they want it to be a "surprise!, this is a secret, Red Hood origin story all along!". But it was no surprise and it hit like a big thud.
@@Rotodojo-yf9sq how can they be wrong when it’s their opinion? For me you are wrong, City is the best for me and a lot of fans, this game disappointed me the most in a long time, story is shit and retcons other stuff from City, a lot of bosses are lame, side missions that would be interesting like Hush or Man-Bat, they make it shit, one cutscene and button click, Hush is down, fly for Man-Bat, click button watch scene, repeat until the mission ends
@@DoganME Everything you just said is the same thing I hear from everyone else. And if you ask me your criticisms for Arkham Knight are just wrong. Like to the point where you guys are just lying or making up complaints. Arkham knight did exactly what city did but better plus it added more to the game.
@@DoganME It's just you're telling me that the story is bad. What about it is bad? It perfectly wraps up the Arkham series even though we're getting a Gotham knights game later next year. Plus the side missions I thought were very well executed. The side missions in Arkham City are "WAY TOO EASY". You can literally do all of them in one day except the Riddler. That one takes days to finish on its own.
I'm surprised that, in all that talk about the Batmobile and the complaints about it, he never touched on the Batmobile predator sections, which were, far and away, the most complained about part of the game... and for good reason! The Batmobile doesn't have Bat's wide range of movement options, so you're left with lots of tedious creeping along the streets, which causes the whole thing to wear thin, very quickly. This is only exacerbated by all the tanks being identical, so you just keep repeating the exact same steps over and over and over, without the enemy variety with helps to shake up the on-foot predator sections. The only thing that does change is that later encounters have more of them, so your reward for figuring out how to take down a couple of the tanks is... getting to do it all over again, only longer and slower as you hunt for an opening that won't get you immediately spotted as you line up your shot. None of that would've been so bad, if they'd had them once or twice to shake things up, but no, they keep revisiting them, long past the point where all novelty has worn off and they've worn out their welcome. Then, there was the final nail in the coffin, of having the Deathstroke boss battle reduced to another one of those, long after you're already sick of them, which just felt like a slap in the face for people looking forward to another epic showdown with a fan-favorite member of Bat's rogue's gallery... something Origins did so much better! Even if it was mostly a bunch of quicktime events, it actually felt like a clash between probably the two, most-skilled fighters in the world, rather than taking the actual fight between them completely out of the player's hands in a cutscene like they did in Knight!
The Arkham completion run is complete. I wouldn't say Arkham Knight is hated, just viewed as disappointing. We were promised a climatic finale to the Rocksteady trilogy, but it didn't turn out that way. It's the story and boss battles that hold the game back when they were so well done in Asylum and City. Outside of that, just about everything Knight does in terms of core gameplay is equally strong.
The batmobile was never terrible, it was just used too damn much. People (myself included) got sick of it. So when someone asks you just remember that batburnout so 'batmobile bad!!'
Arkham Knight has the best story in the series. My favourite thing about Batman is how he is always presented with temptations to give in to an easy immoral choice but through incredible mental strength and perseverance, he pulls through always. All the time. This is done in previous Batman games too but it's one of the central themes in Knight. The joker, in this game and within this universe from Batman's perspective, is characterized as this mercilessly terrifyingly sadistic and relentlessly force of evil that defies morals. And given what Joker's done to Batman in the Arkham verse and pretty much any other media, it's easy to believe given the uncompromising lengths of evil to get what he wants is a good representation of what Batman fears most. This image of Joker, Batman's polar opposite, who's killed and terrorised his closest allies and friends is constantly espousing ideas of what Batman should and shouldn't do. It's contextualised by the brilliant use of the plot device of the fear toxin having an extended effect. By this way, Rocksteady gave players a window into Batman's mind and what he is thinking about any given point in story. We know all the time what Batman's thinking about at any given moment. This level of personal connection with Batman is missing in all previous Arkham games. This is interactive storytelling at its best. We know what's going on inside the hood because his fears are being spoken aloud. This makes Batman incredibly human while still doing justice to his "extraordinary mortal among ordinary mortals" side of the character. It's in Batman's nature to be stoic brooding and refusing to give in to the immoral temptations that his villains, particularly the Joker, always confront him with. It's a story of overcoming fears with a great deal of perseverance and self control while being surrounded by situations that cause self-doubt. That makes Batman the hero he is and the story of Arkham Knight does that beautifully. I am surprised and flabbergasted by how well Rocksteady knows Batman that they were able to weave a story about Batman's perseverance and self-doubt. The story of good in people and in Batman and his strength required to outlast the forces of inward evils. Joker was Batman's fear and Scarecrow was the catalyst of that fear. I am surprised by how they managed to create a stoic but an emotional character in Batman better than previous games.
This game is the "what could have been" disappointing thanks to the change in writers. The writer from the first two games never came back for the third. Shoved in was the batmobile instead of splitting it's game time with the Batplane. The game could have had co-op and couch co-op, but nope just play by yourself and switch characters on the fly sometimes. The loss of the one of the original writers *Paul Dini* is the beginning and end to this game with new work consisting of the Riddler making race tracks for Batman??? It's a shame considering this game had to follow two game of the year winners. This is *NOT* how you end a trilogy.
Actually, only two writers didn't return, and that was Paul Dini and Paul Crocker. Sefton Hill, who co-wrote Arkham City with Paul Dini and Paul Crocker, came back to pen the script for Arkham Knight. Ian Ball also makes a return, writing/designing the side quests, once again. Not to mitigate Paul Dini's work with the Arkham series, but Paul Crocker is the person to also thank for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City's wonderful dialouge, since he wrote most of it; Paul Dini even said as much, when reflecting on his work with Rocksteady Studios and their Batman games. In essence, two writers jumped off, while the other two decided to stay on. Not that big of a deal. Direction didn't change either, since Sefton Hill was the writer and director for all three Arkham games. Overall, Arkham Knight's main story received a lot of love and attention from it's writers. I thought the pacing and plot points in Arkham Knight were good, not perfect, but certainly better than City, in some regard. The second act of Arkham City was a black hole that deliberately sucked up the player's time to lengthen the overall campaign; thus, it ruined the pacing of the story, by quite a sizable margin. Arkham Knight didn't have any real problems with pacing, everything flowed nicely, but, that's not to say Arkham knight has a perfect story, either. No, far from it. I think the only Arkham game that had a perfect story was Arkham Asylum, it was much more narratively focused and had a neat premise to boot. Each Arkham has their own set of flaws, but each are fantastic in their own regards.
Thank you! Thank you for this great review and standing up for this game. I personally loved Arkham Knight. And I never understood the hate it got. Yeah maybe the story was kind of predictable. Maybe the batmobile had too many missions. But really they were just minor things to me. I still liked playing with the batmobile. I still loved the Riddler challenges. I swore off of Riddler stuff in Arkham City, but I really didn't mind doing all the side missions and the Riddler Challenges this time. I never touched the AR stuff or other challenges though. I played on a PS4 and there was only 1 time I encountered a bug where I fell through the map. That's it. The game is solid, looks great, and upped the game play from the previous games. It was just fun to play and never made me resent getting it. It deserves a lot more respect than it gets.
For those going for 240%, I have devised a foolproof way to minimize burnout caused by riddle hunting. First, stop at every informant you see. Freeze Blast him immediately to avoid knocking him out by accident with repeated counters. You can unlock Freeze Blast early by visiting Panessa Studios after Chapter 3. Interrogating one informant will reveal the location of 3-7 Riddler collectibles, which is a good value. The one in GCPD is a freebie. You can do these right away, or clean them up in chunks when prompted to sidequest during lulls in the story. Bring vigilant about this should net you 100+ by the end of the game. But instead of finishing them up all at once, start your New Story + so all your Riddler progress is carried over. Continue intercepting informants, but when prompted to sidequest, open up the menu tab for the Riddler and take stock off what you still need. First of course comes collectibles you already have marked. Next is riddles you think you know the answer to, but you don't actually have their location, followed by obvious green towers and lights which can be spotted from high perches. You can also see burning fire stations and militia watchtowers from up high, and the police helicopter's radio will help you immersively locate missing firefighters and rejected dolls. The more of these you get out of the way, the less informants you have to track down. Until you have all the islands opened up, there's not much more we can do here. Once you destroy the long range missile battery defending Founders Island however, you can force informants to spawn in frequently by driving loops around all three islands. The longer you spend on a single island, the less likely informants are to spawn there until they become almost nonexistent. You can also scan through buildings by gliding around at low altitude in Detective Vision. Press circle to cancel out of your grapnels and keep your speed up without gaining height. You can keep track of which collectibles you're allowed to get with your current story progress and which tapes you have unlocked in the Riddler tab so you know when to stop. Finally, the map tools in the Arkham Knight's tunnel base are very frustrating to use, so you may consider looking up your last few if you're having trouble. You'll need the upgrade for the Disruptor that allows it to destroy mines to complete one of these. For true hardcore players, certain challenges allow you to obtain a maximum of 20 fists for achieving scores above and beyond the three star limit. You will have to learn every tiny nuance of the gameplay to to do this
After not playing any games since I was a kid, the recent Batman movie got me interested in this game serious. So I bought an XBox One and all 4 games and played through them this year. They’ve all been excellent but Arkham Knight is by far my favorite! The detail and scope of the city, the water and rain effects… but most of all just gliding across the rooftops and driving through the streets in the Batmobile are what make this game for me…
I think one of the big problems I had with the game was that the game’s “true ending” was locked behind the riddler trophies forcing you to grind long after you finished the story. The batmobile also overstayed its welcome. Like yes we all wanted the car to feature but not be in it nearly as much as hand to hand combat.
@@JLacay it is an annoying but meaningful necessity and wouldn't have been so hated if the game wasn't such a drag already at the end with all the batmobile tank missions and anger over the repetitiveness and predictability of the story.
I mean i don't see why thats a negative, people fucking praise games with secret true endings for completing them all the time, so what's different here? And if it truly is the riddler stuff well... fucking don't let enigma win by proving he's smarter then you. It's in character for him to do this, do you think batman would just ignore nigma his entire career just because he can't be fucked to solve his puzzles? It's a batman simulator andyou gotta realize even then you're only solving these once, batman does this pretty much weekly. Even then, the riddler is a really interesting villain and deserves to be recognized so just not making him important would be a massive fucking disservice to his character. And on the topic of the batmobile, fucking try playing gta without cars or spiderman without webs. It's batmans main gadget and his main utility for getting around gotham. Plus as Jerard said, the batmobile just debuted so ofc its not gonna be as refined. Tl;dr, batman is the worlds greatest detective and the riddlers only mental adversary. To play as the batman, you must think like the batman and fight hus enemy's like he would. That includes the riddler.
ive played and "beat" the game 4 times now, and every time i told myself "im gonna do ALL the riddler trophies this time" and i never do. it really is a slog. if i miss one in a building somewhere, im pretty much guaranteed to never get it. Or one trophy in some puzzle-vent in a specific area of a certain airship...like, ughhhh.
26:11 I like that completing the main campaign is essential to the Knightfall protocol considering everyone knows who he is now (except Nigma who outright denies it). it’s the perfect ending to the Arkham legacy.
It doesn't feel awful holding a shoulder button to enter Battle Mode. As a matter of fact, its much more effective to use when in tricky situations like the Cloudburst battle to know for how long and faster it feels to transition between modes.
Arkham Knight turns into a fast paced, well scripted and executed action adventure with just the right RPG elements to make you want to keep moving forward. The game does an awesome job of making you feel like Batman, while also reminding you just how vulnerable Batman is in a head on battle. As I progressed through the game and upgraded Batman’s skills and gadgets, I approached every encounter with a group of thugs as almost a chess game. I scoped out the area first for any environmental takedowns, who was carrying a gun or stun baton, how many bigger guys there were, who I was going to attack first. I planned out my attacks and relished the flow of those actions unfolding. There is a reason this combat system has been copied again and again and Rocksteady has really polished what they have developed over 2 other games. I love how simplistic the system is, while also having this huge deep side to it if you choose to go that route. I didn't pay much attention to the combat system as I was distracted by another system that I feel is almost a whole other half of this game.
Make sure not to skip Origins. It got left out of the remasters and then the collection, wasn't even ported to current gen, but it's definitely worth a play.
My real only complaint for this game is how they shoved the Bat Tank down your throat in the final act of the game, I actually enjoyed the batmobile but it was just way overused. Other than that this game was amazing
Fun fact, I actually finished 100% of the game recently, last month in fact. I pre-ordered the game. It took a long time to get the race stars. Also fun trivia, the ability to play challenge maps with other characters was a feature added a few months after release as requested by the community. My completionist heart sunk to despair when that happened.
I dropped out of Jirard’s content years ago, but I would HAPPILY watch every Completionist I missed if he played the other MGS games. It’s been so long!
What a coincidence! Yesterday I thought about going back to this game. I started it in 2016 but then I never actually got to play it. And now you uploaded this video all of a sudden. It's a sign! I'm gonna go back! :D Update: I started a new save file today and I'm enjoying myself a lot so far!
I've always been of the the opinion that "Arkham Knight" is not a bad game. It just isn't as good as "Arkham City" was. The visuals are still amazing even when compared to games that we have coming out now. Combat is still as amazing as it has always been. Being able to explore the city of Gotham is an absolute treat. My two personal critiques are this... the Batmobile and the story. The Batmobile I like as a vehicle, but not as the tank. It doesn't help that several major boss fights are tied to the Batmobile in some way. Deathstroke, Arkham Knight (twice), Firefly. The Story is my personal biggest gripe though. The three major elements are Joker, Scarecrow, and The Arkham Knight. Joker's personality being tied to his blood is just odd. I understand that it creates a divide and conflict within the characters. But that implies that Joker wasn't a bad person by choice, he just had some condition that made him act that way I guess. Scarecrow somehow went from being the cackling lunatic that he was in "Arkham Asylum" to being a more philosophical villain that just stole unused Hugo Strange dialog left over from "Arkham City". Arkham Knight had the disadvantage of not being established in the series continuity before he was introduced in this game. I know that obviously when "Arkham Asylum" was made the developers hadn't planned for this series to end up as a trilogy, but this game literally tells you the villain's identity hours before the ACTUAL reveal. It would be one thing if it was a case of Batman having always known and just bot wanted to admit it to himself, but he is genuinely surprised by the reveal, and the game treats the Arkham Knight telling Batman his own secrets as a "omg" moment. Like the player is supposed to be surprised that this person knows so much about Batman and have their jaw on the floor when he does things like call Batman by his real name. This came off as a bit more rant like then I originally intended, but those are just my personal feelings about this game. If people like this game then I completely understand why. The environment, game play, and visuals are the best they have ever been in the series. And as this video shows there is soooo much content to keep you occupied for such a long time. But like I said, that's just how I feel about it, thoughts?
Improved combat + improved stealth + improved gliding + improved puzzles + improved graphics + improved and a denser open world + improved level design = Arkham knight is a VASTLY superior game to any arkham game before it in every shape way or form
Sometimes I just do sidemissions and play the soundtrack from the dark knight with the game music muted and honestly feel like it's the most Batman I've ever Batman'ed
Main reason from what I remember was the PC port. It was unbelievably terrible and ALOT of UA-camrs played it down... Some even said fans had been lying about the bugs. It created this weird wedge between fans of the older games and the reviewers of this game. I did love the game, when I eventually got around to playing it on PS4. They used a crazy small team to port it to PC.
I realized I'm not a completionist after Arkham City where 4 achievements are dedicated to Robin and Nightwing. Which boils down to completing all predator and free-flow encounters with all characters. No thank you.
The free flow perfection of Monarch Theater with Batman, Robin, Catwoman, and Nightwing will highlight every inconsistency and flaw in the combat system. Finishing Crime Alley with Batman, Robin, and Nightwing unharmed is more doable, but there's still a bit of RNG unless you really want to play the game I'm a boring way. And getting to Killer Croc on the Iceberg Lounge is not meant to be done. Or at least not meant to be fun. The way you have to play becomes so jank. Even if you want to play normally, you can't. The enemy variety gets to intense that you can't actually rack up score in a meaningful amount of time. 10/10 game but wtf.
25:52 my problem with this bit was that I was locked out of ANY ending: if you beat all the villains (except the riddler trophies) before you beat scarecrow, you get no ending at all you just get sent back to the rooftop & told to get back at it
The car was fine, but it overstayed its welcome to the point it became frustrating. And having Deathstroke as the final boss only using the tank was just foolish. And then you have to ask yourself: What has a race to do with a riddle? I dont mind racing with the car, but calling it a riddle, thats a stretch. Another problem with the game is that there were just too many riddles and too stupid reason to get them all, i mean if Nygma wishes to hide himself in a cramped place, go ahead be my guest, at least i know where he will be. But with all the other Arkham games not counting Origins, it was a rewarding feeling to get him behind bars, in this game Dr. Pyg had that feeling as a minor character while Riddler was more like finally i got that bastard to shut him up, not like i actually stopped a madman
You can never live alone In Gothan City thanks to your local neighbourhood Batman, no matter which version you trust. Friendly or still-not-so-friendly!
The thing about the tank combat vs regular combat is that, when people picture "being batman", they picture either sneaking around and slowly stealthing out bad guys, or taking on a mob of goons and swiftly punching them into submission. Or using a plethora of gadgets to incapacitate them, you get the idea. With the batmobile, what people like is the image of racing down the streets of gotham, even chasing down a bad guy or two. I think it's less likely that there's people that wanted to weave in and out shooting robotic tank drones inside the batmobile, regardless of how well the gameplay was done. Some people can still get into it, but it's the scenario itself that comes off as silly and straining people's interest in it over what they would come to expect from batman. I know there's a thing with developers where they keep trying to justify sequels to a game by cramming in more features, but they end up being seen as distractions from the core mechanics that brought players into it in the first place. I prefer Crash 2 over Crash 3 for a similar reason, since, while I think the base platforming is more refined and polished in 3, there's less of it overall amidst all the motorcycle, jetski, tiger riding, swimming, and airplane piloting that I have to deal with. It's this weird trend that comes off like the game developers losing sight of the core appeal of a game.
The fact that this game is underappreciated relative to the others is so weird to me. It's incredibly well-made, thoughtfully designed, and is an engineering marvel. I agree that it's the best game in the series. This vid also reminds me that I need to buy this game for myself lol (I played it on a relative's PS4 before I bought my own). and Jirard ain't kidding about those batmobile challenges. I left those alone but watched my aforementioned relative attempt to 3-star them all. He did it, but it took ages and he would often be grinding out single challenges for hours on end. Absolutely brutal stuff, especially considering the various strengths and weaknesses of each car that you need to adjust to.
Just started this a couple weeks ago. Honestly couldn't make it more than an hour (possibly less). Sure the batman elements are solid as ever but the focus on the tank is so obviously shoehorned in and awkwardly controlled. I watched all the cutscenes and the story is great. But if half the game doesn't make you feel like batman and isn't even fun than I think its perfectly fair to not like this game solely because of the batmobile. I usually give games a second chance and play a bit more but I'm in the middle of other titles now and I honestly don't enough. Being batman and being the batmobile felt like two completely different incoherent games. city is one of those games i go back to every year or two but i don't think i'd eve be touching origins again Personal ranking of the arkham franchise: - city - asylum - origins - knight
i absolutely LOVE the batmobile and everything you do with it... though i can agree there are a handful of times when drone sections weren't necessary and came across like padding.
Glad you acknowledged this game. It amazes me that most people seem to forgot about it, while being one of the most atmospheric and tightest gaming experiences I ever had. And it still looks better than most games released today (!)
Minor nitpick with this game: I hate Batman’s new holographic communicator on his wrist. It feels very unbatman like to clearly show off who he is talking to. The people he talks to (Alfred/Barbara) even call him “Bruce” or (Mr. Wayne) at some points. But hey, I get it. It’s a video game.
@@jackmaney4276 yeha, the personal feelings about the game aside, I don’t like it that much, some will love it, but objectively the game release was shit, the port was horrendous, it’s still bad performance wise, the game is big enough with all the patches, but it will never make the port great, just like GTA IV has still terrible optimization just like this game still chuggs, it’s funny when he said it, when a lot of players couldn’t play it because it was shit port that was unplayable
I liked arkham knight overall, it’s just not better than the other ones. The overuse of batmobile in missions was iritating but I kinda get them for that. It was the first time ever we had it and they wanted to maximize the usage of it and they overdid it. Other than that it’s a good game and I enjoyed the story. Oh yeah and fuck riddler and his challenges, didn’t get a 100% because of him
Im in the minority here, but since getting arkham knight in 2015, it has always been my favorite arkham game. I love this game so much. Im not the biggest batman fan and never heard of the jason todd story prior to this game and I was blown away by that twist. I have replayed this game an insane amount of times. Its amazing.
I do like batman, but I didn't keep up with everything and I top was blown away by the reveal. of course because I was so blown away, I go back to soe comics and there are a course movies thst bring it up as well,...of course if you're a long time batman fan, it'd not going to surprise you but that's not a bad thing. Like, of course I knew who bucky was to captain America but I xan appreciate that it would surprise. y wife who didn't know and therefore a great reveal.
Two things: One, it's been made clear that the Bat-Family game is it's own thing and the upcoming Suicide Squad game is going to be the continuation of the Arkham story. Second, Jirard missed a huge opportunity during the end bit with the blue tint to make him look like a skeleton with a beard. You know, to make it look like we're seeing him in detective vision.
I loved the first three Batman games, but this game just felt “off” and not as fun. And yes, maneuvering the car on roofs and beams sucked. And most of the tank segments were unnecessary.
I think i've rarely or never heard anyone claim that Arkham Knight is the worst one in the series, it's my favourite! I always liked seeing the Joker casually transition into and break reality, like how one moment he is leaning against a wall talking to you, and the next he has already seamlessly teleported into an air vent and is continuing the conversation like nothing happened. And then you basically get to see stuff like that through the entire game
Probably not something you experienced yourself since you likely 100%'d things before going into the ending anyway, but the main thing that ticked people off about the ending was that if you met the criteria for the post-game ending without all the Riddler Trophies, it would literally cut the ending cutscene super abruptly with a static "Get 100% to watch the TRUE ending" screen. Like, rewarding someone for 100% completion is one thing, but at least give a decent sense of closure for those just looking to finish the game normally. That's probably what a lot of people had against the game in terms of its story.

Honestly yeah the fight was super underwhelming cause I thought after I beat the tank it was gonna be a on foot fight from there and then cutscene.
Probably the worst part about this game, actually out of all the games
There were 2 boss fights in the game that were good in my opinion. Professor Pyg, and The Riddler, the other ones were bad.
Initially, when the game released you could only play as one pre-determined character on each challenge map and didn't have the choice to switch characters. But after backlash from fans, they let you switch characters on every map. So you have the fans to blame for your pain.
Made sense to ask for it at the time, it only ballooned when they added more characters a tonne of new AR Challenges as DLC.

Aslong as he doesn't hurt himself or the others around him, I think he can continue this job of his.
Riddler in a mech suit is dumb. Getting to just pound the fucking piss out riddler DESPITE him in a mech suit is satisfying as fuck.
Two flaws in your theory:
1) Batman only started having Joker in his mind in Knight. Not in City and not before Knight, only in Knight and even then it was only a few hours into Knight
2) He starts using the Batmobille way before he gets joker in his mind.

"The best batman game ever made"
*You're goddamn right!*
Yep. It's my favorite Arkham game.

The Arkham Knight twist was ...so easy to see. I was more surprised the twist in the TellTale game with 'Arkham' baddy.
Telltale were doing some good storytelling in their Batman games.
When they showed off the game for the first time, a lot of comic-savvy people jumped to the conclusion that the Arkham Knight was Jason Todd, only to be told from interviews that the Arkham Knight "is an all-new character" and when questioned about if there's any Batman stories they're taking as inspirations, they just kinda evaded the question saying that "they're creating their own mythos"
I feel like if you didn't count on the Arkham Knight to be as big of a twist you wouldn't just straight up lie to the people that have already figured it out
Really makes me wonder if it would've helped the game's reception if they had just called the character Red Hood from the start

@@Rotodojo-yf9sq I’m not lying, why should I? I have no advantage or anything from it whatsoever
God dn manbat popping in ontop of a roof when i swung up to the ledge almost gave me a heart attack the first time. I think i screamed lol
Theres still the metroidvania Arkham

I wish Arkum Origins was made with the Animated Series art style. Now THAT would have been memorable.
sure would've been nice.

I dissagree
Well it make sense that the game force you to grind to get the true ending because it is the last Arkham game and it's the last night for the Batman.
@@JLacay it is an annoying but meaningful necessity and wouldn't have been so hated if the game wasn't such a drag already at the end with all the batmobile tank missions and anger over the repetitiveness and predictability of the story.
Riddlers stuff is a lot less painful to do before ypu beat the game instead of after
I mean i don't see why thats a negative, people fucking praise games with secret true endings for completing them all the time, so what's different here?
It's overly-ambigous and cryptic. It leaves me feeling empty and unsatisfied.
2021 and I can still say this is the best looking game I’ve ever played.
I just finished the Telltale games of Batman and was thinking of playing the Arkham games finally. This video makes me think I should even more now.

Asylum and City are 10s while Knight is a 9. Still amazing.

I never understood the hate for this game. I thought it was and is a great end to this game franchise.
Yh it isn’t perfect but it’s an above average game
Main reason from what I remember was the PC port. It was unbelievably terrible and ALOT of UA-camrs played it down... Some even said fans had been lying about the bugs. It created this weird wedge between fans of the older games and the reviewers of this game. I did love the game, when I eventually got around to playing it on PS4.
They used a crazy small team to port it to PC.
@@keybladeslashw900 Above average. It's a great game besides the story
Really bad story and the boring ass bat-tank. That's it.
There’s not that much hate for it really. Most of us consider it a good game with some flaws, Jirard is just being weirdly defensive.
I feel cheated. There was not one "I'm BeardMan!!!" joke to be heard.
I’ve waited for this for SOOOOOOOOOO LONG FINALLY THE LONG AWAITED VIDEO
That was the most laziest choice they could've made.
25:52 my problem with this bit was that I was locked out of ANY ending: if you beat all the villains (except the riddler trophies) before you beat scarecrow, you get no ending at all you just get sent back to the rooftop & told to get back at it
“It’s the car right? Chicks dig the car.”
Chicks might. Gamers....eh.
Having finally gotten to play Knight, I'd say I still prefer the first two. However, Knight is still a hell of a lot of fun. Such a great series.
24:27 No wonder Batman used it to chuck Bane into a lake. Must’ve hated that car.
suggestion: completing henry stickman (getting all the bios, endings etc...)
Being batman and being the batmobile felt like two completely different incoherent games. city is one of those games i go back to every year or two but i don't think i'd eve be touching origins again
Personal ranking of the arkham franchise:
- city
- asylum
- origins
- knight

Minor nitpick with this game:
I hate Batman’s new holographic communicator on his wrist. It feels very unbatman like to clearly show off who he is talking to. The people he talks to (Alfred/Barbara) even call him “Bruce” or (Mr. Wayne) at some points. But hey, I get it. It’s a video game.
Imagine if they make a new one with PS5, the possibility for map size is insane. Like you said maybe we can see ALL of Gotham, not just central!
"The vast majority of the hatred this game receives is unwarranted." Bold words about a game whose PC version was prettymuch unplayable on release.

Oh yeah and fuck riddler and his challenges, didn’t get a 100% because of him
It's better than Arkham Origins.
Wow. After watching this I feel sorry for completions.
I rarely finish a game, let alone complete all challenges.
HE DID IT
HE SAID IT
"feel like batman"
