Tesla Model Y - Fixing The Biggest Flaw Of This Car With Unplugged Performance Comfort Suspension!!

- If you have a Tesla Model Y, you no doubt have experienced the ride quality first hand. And although Tesla did improve the suspension on the Model Y and Model 3 some time in 2023, it still leaves a lot to be desired for those looking for a more plush ride.
The reason why the Model Y lacks a plush ride is because the suspension chosen for the car is more performance geared. The Coils on the car from Tesla are a linear design, meaning there is no flexibility in the way the car handles bumps and divots in the road. Instead, the bigger the compression, the harder the feedback.
The coils are paired with a preset shock which has no adjustability. This combination is a good fit for handling the overall weight of the Model Y, and keeps that performance DNA in place, but it doesn't allow you to have the ability to find a smoother ride. Thats where Unplugged Performance comes in!
Unplugged Performance was one of the first companies to offer a suspension upgrade for the Tesla Model Y. The suspension upgrade included a ton of features that allowed nearly countless configurations for tuning the ride for sport or comfort. After a few years though, there are now enough Model Y's on the road to support those people who appreciate the performance of the Model Y, but on a day to day basis would prefer a more cushioned ride.
Right around Christmas, Unplugged Performance released their new comfort suspension at nearly half the price of the original. This new suspension affords you the same level of comfort with less customization. For example, the more expensive option allows you to adjust ride height and dampening on the go. This suspension only allows you to adjust dampening on the front suspension under the hood, but requires the wheels to be removed to adjust the rear. It is also not able to adjust ride height.
So if you are not looking to take your Model Y to the track, these customizations are not necessary. In fact, when installing this suspension at half the price, you are able to set how soft or firm you want the ride, install the suspension, and never worry about adjusting again!
The best part about this suspension is that because there are no complicated adjustments to be made, this is very DIY friendly. In fact, there are 8 bolts/nuts on the front corners and 4 bolts/nuts on the rear corners. It takes about 30 minutes per side on the front and 20 minutes per side on the rear. So in 3 hours total, you can have a fresh new comfortable ride for a bargain price.
If you do not feel comfortable, or do not wish to take on this upgrade on your own, of course Unplugged Performance has a network of installers across the country that can handle the install for you listed on their website.

Former Tesla mobile technician here. Avoid doing this while you have warranty. This mod will void your warranty on the entire suspension system but also on the motors if something happens with them. I have seen them deny warranty on a faulty drive unit because ”the suspension mod have caused excessive strain on the drive unit”. That guy cried when I called him.
Yes I was going to say this
i was about to do this but decided to lower the wheels to 18" to gain a bit of comfortability. also was about to make 2" lift and worried about my warranty. 2022 MYP
@@keithvry I would be careful. If something happens revert back to stock suspension and pray to God that they won’t find traces of what you did. Most times they do see it tho.
@@sa.t.2507 yes, that's why i only change the wheels for comfortability.
Curious, what makes a mod cause excessive strain on the drive unit? If one swaps it out for a firmer or softer suspension? Or something else completely unrelated to the product itself (installation technique, etc.)?
You can easily do this yourself, you just need a couple things. 1 a screw driver. 2. An Entire mechanics garage with spring compressors 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Not sure the average Tesla buyer would be doing this by themselves. The only issue is if you get this done and then have a crash Tesla could refuse service since it was modified like this?
After all the install work, you’ll love Tesla using the new suspension denying warranty claims and demanding you remove these shocks before they will work on the car.
@@JetFire9 This is my biggest concern I read that post about the person having this issue with Tesla. I'm kind of wanting to upgrade the suspension but afraid of the issues if anything were to happen
@@Mgkamiolo No. If you "have a crash", that's an insurance claim. Tesla would have nothing to do with that. For a warranty claim? Sure, they could deny if they feel the aftermarket parts were the cause of the problem.
lol, most people will have everything except for a $30 spring compressor...
And 975$ cost to install at my local shop. Doing this upgrade in 2-3weeks. Can’t wait
Congrats, you will be happy you did!
$1800 in Cincinnati Area, this is insane lol. Imma gonna do it myself.
I wouldn’t say that the stock suspension is flawed. Flaw suggests that anyone buying a MY needs to change the suspension to eliminate the “flaw”. It’s personal preference. I’ve had my MYP for almost three years and I like the suspension and the ride quality. I can push the car hard through corners while not having excessive body roll. I’d actually prefer a M3P but I need the additional room the Y provides. As someone else mentioned, the suspension is part of the safety mechanism in these cars given the acceleration and speed they can attain. I’m not sure that I want to have a comfort suspension if I have to take evasive action to avoid an obstacle at high speed or under hard acceleration. You’re right though that your new configuration is still be better than a number of other cars. Again, it’s just personal preference. Enjoy the new set up!
Fair point.
Sorry, I respect your points but I still disagree. Our BMW M3 has a stiffer suspension than our MYP, but it's still much more comfortable. Tesla still has the opportunity to improve it further without hampering the "performance" aspects of it. Even the X5M has a stiff suspension but it's still very comfortable and corners much better than our MYPs.
@@FinalVibesmy main point was about calling the stock Tesla suspension flawed. Yes, it can be improved as is true for most vehicles. Both the BMW M3 and especially XM5 will flip over much more easily than any Tesla or similar vehicle given the relative center of gravities. I saw this 1st hand at a BMW driving school where the instructor demonstrated the difference between a high center of gravity X3 versus 3 series. I’ve had various BMW’s for a long period, including an X3 for 10 years and a 330Xi for 14 years. I still have a 2016 3 series in the family. Love them but still prefer my MYP mainly for the combination of safety, performance and cargo size. It just comes down to personal preference.
That's what dual rate springs are for - increased comfort under normal conditions and stiffness in the corners and at speed. Best of both worlds.
That’s an option but there’s a trade off here as well. “The main drawback of dual rate springs is that switching from one spring rate to the other can be jarring for the driver. Going back and forth between spring rates can cause ride quality to suffer. So if you're planning on installing dual rate springs, it's best to stick to either high-speed performance or casual driving. Avoid switching performance demands back and forth too often with these springs.”
It is all about the springs. I changed the shocks to Tein and there was improvement but not substantially to a luxury ride. Talking to the installers ..... the springs do not having enough windings for a comfort ride. This kit looks to be much better
yea, the springs going to dual rate vs linear is a huge difference
I did get the luxury suspension from Unplugged and there’s a tremendous difference in the ride. The model Y is so stiff and now with this new suspension made a huge difference. I now love everything about my model Y.
I did this upgrade myself on my 2018 Model 3, feels amazing. Yes I made sure that my warranty wasn't active anymore and it was installed by a pro. Cost a total of $2500 including installation in DC. So far it's served me well.
I am very happy with the upgrade
You lost me at the lug nuts! HA! I've been waiting for your feedback since you bought from Unplugged. Sold me. Fortunately they're just up the freeway from me, so I'll have them install. OR I could drive to Florida! 😂 Thanks again for the update! Ward
lol, nothing wrong with having someone do it for you, and in your case, its close anyways!
Great level of detail on this install, great music choice also. Keep up the good work man!
Cheers
Great Tutorial! Thank you. I will definitely check unplugged out
Glad it was helpful!
Do not forget to get an alignment after any suspension work!
always a good idea when messing with suspension
Only needed if the ride height has changed.
Very few Y DIY owners are going to attempt this upgrade. Don’t forget the alignment!
Perhaps. But I know quite a few that like to do their own work. If not, UP has partner shops around the country who can do it for you
Great Video. Maybe I am wrong, but wouldn’t the “Z” axis be what measures up and down, not the Y axis? Thanks for the info.
Thank you, your video is incredibly informational and easy to follow along. I just picked up some new Tein shocks and struts that I’m hoping will improve ride quality and this video will really help with the install.
I do have tein installed and the suspension is way more soft but also comes with too much lateral movement. I have ordered mild springs and luxury suspension kit from unplugged to see how it’s compared with tein. Installation will be done in 2 weeks
Appreciate the heads up! Do you mind explaining what you mean by lateral movement? Was this caused by a specific setting or just due to the strut/shocks all together? Also would like to hear how the UPP compares to your Teins
@@LTdan457 like the car is moving from side to side over several times over some kind of potholes when you hit with only one side. Maybe the OEM sway bar is too soft. Tein dampers were recalled by the manufacturer because our mechanic noticed that on the left side the spring holder was twisted 180 degrees being not in the same position as OEM damper. Three sets were affected by this problem and one of my friend already replaced them and the new one are identical with oem regarding the spring holder and also a bit softer. Finally I managed to install the setup from UPP with mild springs and I was dissapointed! It seems not to be as soft as Tein + OEM springs over potholes and speed bumps, actually is harsher! Only slight advantage of this setup is smoothening a little better only small imperfections of the road and the nice feeling on highway but that's it. Also it comes with bining noise on front springs when turning the wheel steering all the way to left and right and also after only one day I noticed that two spirals are rubbing against each other and maybe this is also the noise source. I am dissapointed and I am thinking what to do next but definitely I would not keep this setup on the car, maybe a coilover or just put back the oem springs. Tein were set as 9 from full stiff and 12 on the rear while Upp were set as 5 from full soft. My car is Y Performance 2023 made at Berlin, Germany.
Man i appreciate all the torque specs. Grest video
would not dare do this. too confusing and dangerous for my comfort level. enjoyed the vid. i find my y perf suspension fine.
Same here!
nothing wrong with that! just enjoy it how it is!
Man this is great finally have this video!!!! I need the comfort in my 2023 Model Y but is it worth it on the supposed Tesla's upgraded suspension on the 2023 model Y?
I dont know how this compares to the updated suspension on the 2023's
I'll be experimenting with that soon. I bought a 2024 Model Y and the new "comfort" suspension is still far too harsh in my opinion.
Excellent video! Just excellent!
How will it do on abrupt lane changes? Braking? Etc?
I appreciate the test and caveats given. If you wanted to take this to the next level, I'd love to see how any other SUV that's considered comfortable measures up on the same circuit. That would be a good baseline for how much better a Y could be.
Good thought
Long time subscriber here. This is a great video, thank you! In a previous reply, you mentioned that you bought a mild spring set in addition to the shocks. However, can you use the original springs or is that not advisable? I’m just interested in improved ride comfort and not losing any height.
They sell just the shocks, yes. I'm planning to go that route, as I have no interest in lowering the vehicle, which would then necessitate adjustable camber arms and an alignment.
Stiff does not mean performance. The MYP's suspension is average at best.
Absolutely, greatly helped by the low center of gravity, nothing special by itself.
8:36 It will be very complicated if you don’t have the right tools
Great! Have you test driven the new Highland Model3 w/ vastly improved comfort suspension, vs old Model3? Does this kit do similar amount of improvement for Model Y?
Wondering if this might be good enough vs upgrading to entirely new 3 or Juniper Y... or get model3 UP kit...
The new Model 3 is very nice riding car
What model shocks are Unplugged using for this kit?
love it, we are keeping our 21 MY and i have been thinking about this for a min oh yeah BTG its me TheTeslaBruh!
Did a great job selling this #ad. But no way I find this to be “so easy” and no way I’d do this myself and also void my warranty. #NotSmart
Not an ad, Unplugged Performance did not pay more, nor did they give this to me for free. Thanks though
@@BeardedTeslaGuyI stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying. I should’ve added besides this video…KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! You are putting out great content! I should’ve led with that 🤣. Thanks for the response!
Didn't come across as an ad to me. UP is also famous for fighting for you with warranty stuff. Tesla would have to prove this specific suspension modification directly caused whatever failed. Learn your rights.
04:35 you used a different spring compressor than the ones at 05:03. Any special reason for that? Also, why did you remove the 3 outer 15mm bolts, defo not needed, the 13mm ones are enough
I live in Florida. If I had to live with the minefield roads in Michigan or Illinois I wouldn’t hesitate.
Did you get the mild or moderate drop? Or leave it with stock springs?
mild, leaves it close to factory height
almost factory height for MY Performance, only 0.25 inches while for LR is 1 inch drop unfortunately
My man that’s awesome but could you share some before and after shots of how much lower it sits? Would have been cooler haha
It is nearly the same height before and after. You wouldn’t notice just looking at it. Thats said, they offer a “moderate” coil that will noticeably lower the car
Will this void Tesla warranty?
Does anyone know how this will affect vehicle warranty?
Been waiting on this video! Now to watch it
cheers
Another UA-camr, Ryan Shaw, got a Tesla Warranty Denial on a busted drive unit because this aftermarket suspension was installed and had to pay $6k out of pocket to get it fixed. Install aftermarket mods at your own peril, manufacturer’s love to find easy excuses to deny warranty claims. Unless you can afford to lawyer up, you are SOL.
Still on setting 8? have you tried 5 for more confort? I do have now Tein enduraproplus with oem springs but it has kinda more lateral movement over rough road. I purchased the same kit as you for my Y Perf 2023 and I hope to get a better lateral stability and also increasing comfort but i haven't yet installed it. Your video made me to pull the trigger with this kit!
Hey did you end up getting the kit and notice any improvements?
I regret the kit completely. Binging/clicking noise from the front springs because 2-3 coils were touching against them. One of the rear dampers has a very low compression setting compared to the other being defective. Upp support is replying so slow… it’s being one month and half waiting for a full refund/replacement solution and yet not finished. With them installed, the car was nice over very small bumps, stable when cornering but harsher on big bumps than tein enduraproplus with OEM springs. Not to mention that the dampers are identically with Tein only painted black. At the moment I went back to stock suspension….
@@ovidiunecula3233 Good to know will avoid buying this kit now. Appreciate the honest feedback.
Great video. Love the breakdown 👍🏾IMO….not the average guy can do this.
Next BTG gonna drop a video how to DIY change the battery of the car for one with more range and you just need a few tools
Would be amazing! I’d totally do it too!
I’m already out of business here, can’t even get the job started without the elusive 10mm socket 😆
haha, TRUTH!
Does the car rattle less with the softer suspension? In my 2021 Y anything that is not bolted down tends to vibrate and rattle. Hoping this reduces the rattle/vibrations...?
Oh man, rattling drives me absolutely insane! I guess I am fortunate because I don’t have rattles in mine
That’s amazing 🎉
Cheers
Do you need an alignment after the install?
Yes
Yes
Our Model Y had a recent update and now the cruise control is gone and only assisted drive is on the stalk.
What about for the model 3
Good job on this!
cheers
Would be cool to show what the car looks like after its done
What app did you use?
They model Y performance has the lower suspension pkg. Is there a difference between this kit and OEM?
This kit should offer improved ride comfort.
Ur definitely compromising the high speed maneuvering of the car. In case of a deer walking in front of u, tighter suspension would be more helpful 🤔🤔
but it will still perform superior to a Toyota Camry...
These are dual rate springs - comfort under normal conditions and stiffness in the corners and at speed.
I have installed UPP Luxury Suspension kit with their mild springs on my Y Performance from 2023 and I noticed a clunk noise while turning the wheel full turn which can be heard from outside (front left side) but is louder inside the cabin. Anyone noticed the same and how did you fix it?
ua-cam.com/users/shortsV-4KGSi7ifY?feature=share
how do you torque the lower bolts to 85ft-pond once wheels are on and on the ground?
Lay on your back lol. Was not comfortable
I wonder how this compares to the newer “comfort” suspension on the Y’s
Friend has new Y. No improvement.
@@UghthisagainI have a newer performance and it’s improved quite a bit.
not sure
I have a 2021 MY. Test drove a 2023 to see and for me it was a 10-15% improvement. It was still very much on the harsher side. It wasn't enough of an improvement to make me want to upgrade from my 21 to a 2023. I was a bit disappointed in it. I would expect this unplugged suspension is superior for comfort.
@@Darrenhd2 from my test ride in a car with it it felt good. The person was not to willing to hit the big bumps as it was a customer car we were driving just to give me a sense of what 2300$ improvement was. I drove my friends 23 MYLR and it was exactly the same on the road as my 21. So who knows. Maybe just like matrix lights Tesla has better and average shocks for parts lol.
I'm considering just replacing the stock shocks, 24 MYLR, with KONI Special ACTIVE. I don't want to do any major changes so this might be the way to go for less than 1k.
How'd that go? I think I'm going to do shocks only as well.
i bought a 2024 model y and it feels like the 2024 highland model 3 suspension
In 2023, Tesla updated the suspension on the Model Y/Model 3 to improve comfort
The new "comfort" suspension on my 2024 Model Y is still far too harsh in my opinion.
Curious if anyone’s upgraded from MYLR 2023 that already has supposedly better suspension. It’s horrible for me. It almost amplifies all imperfections in any road. I feel embarrassed to have people ride in my “new car”
I'm planning on running this experiment soon. The new "comfort" suspension on my 2024 Model Y is still far too harsh in my opinion.
Would love the more comfortable suspension but without the lowering. On the site it looks like the springs are at least a 1” (mild) drop. If anything, I’d like to get softer and slightly raised suspension for roadtrips and occasional dirt roads. Is there another kit out there for that?
Same here. Weirdly, Unplugged USED to offer this kit with a factory ride height option (i.e. no lowering) 4 years ago but has since changed to only the lowered options. If you want to keep factory right height, you have to fork out an extra $1,500 for the coilover setup. A business decision I guess. I'm sure they had their reasons, but it makes no sense to me. Same story with other kits out there. I have no interest in lowering the vehicle so I think I'll be doing the shocks only.
@@OptimizedTeslaI actually just went with the Tein adjustable shocks. From all the videos about them, they seem to be a solid option for softer ride with factory springs and they only cost me $500 for the set of 4. Looking forward to putting them in 👌
@@Fanzindel Gotcha. I may go that route too then. Let me know how it goes!
Where do you get your background music?
Epidemic sound
Does this lower the ride height with upgraded springs
Yes, it’s an option on their site. Model Y non-performance springs are $420 right now. Mild = 1” drop, moderate = 1.5.
Any additional videos on the loop you took?
no, I didn't want to post a video on that as no one would watch it lol
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I would be interested to see the difference between the camel ride roads and jarring bumps even if it was like 3min of just those compared moments as lots of people I feel can’t get a 22% idea. The shop I’m going to took me for a ride in a Y they did and it’s a big improvement from what my Y awdLR ‘21 is.
Takk!
Thanks for the super chat, will be over in Austria for Tesla takeover, maybe see you there!
Does it lower the vehicle? If so how much?
mine was down just shy of half an inch. Very close to factory height
If you want to drop it more, you can go with the moderate springs, which will be a noticeable drop
Any reason you didn't replace upper control arms while you were in there - or had you previously done that work? As always, great video!
no issues with my control arms, so no need to replace
I completed a 30 minute test drive of the Model Y the last week of February 2024 and was quite pleased with the ride quality on some bumpy suburban streets. If the vehicle is under warranty, this suspension change will void the warranty.
It will not void the warranty lol. If there is a suspension failure, Tesla likely won’t cover that, but if your screen dies, this has nothing to do with that
Wish people would chill with the "void your warranty" fearmongering. The manufacturer has to prove that the modification directly caused the failure. UP specifically is famous for fighting for people with Tesla. Learn your rights.
How’s the suspension of the model x compared to the y
X and S are air bags with cushy ride.
Don’t know of any coil-over that is more plush than modern air suspensions
