Replacing Sway Bar Links on Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe

  • In this video, I replace the front sway bar link on my daughter's 2004 Toyota Matrix XR. The same basic principle applies to pretty much any car with a sway bar link. It is just a rod with a bolt that swivels on each each end. The bolt on one end connects to your sway bar, and the other end connects to a point on your suspension, such as a tab on the strut for instance. Replacing them it just a matter of removing the nut on each end, and swapping out the old part for the new part. It's really an easy concept, but road salt and corrosion can make what should be an easy job, a bit more challenging. As long as you don't panic and know some basic things to get you around the obstacles, it's not that bad at all though.
Hopefully this video helps you in some way. I am not a mechanic, just a normal dad that likes to try to do what I can to save a dollar or two. Be aware of all safety measures you need to take before you start working on your car.

Great video! This combined with your strut assembly made me feel confident that it’s easy to tackle (and which tools to have on standby!!). Huge thanks again.

Just did this repair on my 2004 Vibe today. The symptoms were as stated in this video- front end rattle over small bumps. I lifted one side at a time, but used a second jack under the A-arm to equalize the swaybar, and that works fine (wasn't under tension or dangerous in any way). I replaced the stock units with the beefier Moog offerings which have grease fittings so you can at least try to maintain them. The rattle went away completely after replacement.

Great video BUT soak the nuts with penetrating fluid a day or so before, then soak again right before you start the procedure. It definitely helps.

Really appreciate the video. I've attempted this twice already without success. The nuts are on there like you wouldn't believe. The road salt is bad stuff here. Thanks!

I've had to basically just chop thru the "bolt" or thru portion, or if you work it hard you can rip off the link totally, then get vice grips or pipe wrench or even a hack saw on what's left. You must be near the ocean or in an area where salt is used on the roads in the winter.

I had to get my Dremel
Tool out with wand extension and cut the nut off. Royal pain. Put on duralast. That was about 10 months ago….thinking th passenger side may be failing already. Dunno….hoping it’s just a plastic part (undercover, fender liner etc but I’ve got all that pretty buttoned down good) bumping.

I love how everyone skips over the one hard part of the whole project.

Thanks for your video, what aftermarket sway bars did you used for your replacement? I need to do the same work for my son’s 2003 Toyota Matrix

I only replace the sway bar links, not the sway bar. I used the Ultra Power ones from Rock Auto. So far they have held up well.

Not sure how a question about a laptop ended up on an auto repair video, but thankfully, I happen to be in IT. Yes, if you're just talking about the plastic piece around the edge of the LCD screen, it's just to make it pretty. The screen will work fine without it or with a broken one.

Not an ideal opening statement..They are usually NOT easy to replaced ...unless you've done em before and know what to expect
