As an Italian, from Sardinia of all places where everyone can roll the r, I can't roll the r. My mouth shape literally makes it impossible for me to do so, it's just not a sound I can physically make. Am I speaking Italian wrong? NO
Actually, not anyone can roll the r. It all comes down to mouth shape. I'm from Sardinia, Italy. I can't roll my r. Not when speaking Italian, not when speaking Sardinian, not when speaking Spanish. It is very uncommon to not be able to roll the r in Sardinia, in fact I was constantly mocked and teased and I still am the only person I know who can't roll the r. But eventually I came to accept it. It's simply impossible for me to roll it, and after spending 16 years trying to learn I think it's just best I stop. And for those of you that are learning Spanish or Italian and can't roll the r: it doesn't matter! People will still understand you
@@veraelphie0306 he learned how to make the sound without actually rolling your tongue. I don't speak Spanish mainly because I can't roll my tongue. Genetics I guess.
@@JD_Aguilar717 I make an american-sounding r while speaking italian though not as exaggerated as the american sound is. When I was younger it was a lot more exaggerated, but since I hated it I have evolved to make it less obvious... I can do a short r (like in "bere", if you put it through an italian text to speech you'd know what I mean, it's the movement of the r but in a single tap), but sometimes I accidentally overemphasise it and it sounds like a D
It's crazy that something so unique developed. I love learning about language. I'm attempting to learn both Polish and Spanish at the same time. I could probably be content studying language for the rest of my life
That's a different trill- it's called the voiced bilabial trill. "Rolling your R's" requires the voiced alveolar trill, which is much straightforward than the exercises given to you.
Pinch the corners of your mouth, right where your upper and lower teeth connect Keep your lips pressed together but not so tight that it restrics outward airflow Make a rapid "P" sound It's gonna be short bursts at first, but keep working on it, and you'll be able to hold it for longer durations
@@CannabanoidPhychonauthi friend! I’ve accomplished short bursts yesterday after 2 months and it’s the happiest I’ve probably been all my life haha. Does it really become spontaneous? I want to be able to freely control it. I also struggle so much with words like Perro or Erre lol.
If you can't roll your R's don't let it stop you from learning the language! While it is important in Spanish, it is not necessary. Even some native speakers can roll their R's. People will figure it out in context or ask you for clarification.
Here’s an actual tutorial that works. Try saying words that have BR in them. For example Brazil, or Branch. Attempt to place your tongue on the roof of your mouth close to your teeth. With attempts you will eventually get a few rolls in and eventually be able to use this in Spanish sentences. I discovered this trick and learned how to roll my R’s in a week for the first time.
I'm glad that I don't have any problem with pronouncing the letter "r" because I'm from Poland and I have the same pronunciation of most letters, which makes it easier to learn Spanish.
There are some places in spanish speaker countries where people doesnt roll the R (generally in andean places). For example in Bolivia there exist a population who doesnt roll the R (not because they cant, but because they are used to do a soft R or substitute it for an S). So, as spanish speaker, i wouldnt say that learning to roll the r is something important (unless you want to acquiere an specific accent).
The Caro and Carro really is a good comparison to show the difference the trill makes! I was talking to a lovely Columbian woman I work with, and she wrote exactly this down and demonstrated it for me this past Monday 😊
I first learned to roll my R’s when I was 10 years old because I was learning Italian but by the age of 18 I moved on to learning Spanish because it was Easier and personally as an English Native speaker I have no trouble rolling my R’s
Spanish R is similar to Indonesian R. Probably because Spain once colonised Indonesia. It was actually shocked me the first time I learned that lisp in English speaking country means 'cannot pronounce th correctly' while it means 'cannot pronounce R correctly' in Indonesia.
Thinking too much in technical terms didn't help me, cuz it seemed I was being forceful in doing my trills, but when I tried prounouncing the ra, re, ro, ri this changed the game 4 me, now I'm rolling my r's like there's no tomorrow! 😂 now it comes naturally without force, cuz I'm not thinking too technical. Rolling the single r + rr is good practice through Spanish tongue twisters.
Move your tongue into the position to make the d sound. Just make a sound, and move the tip of your tongue slowly forward until it starts to roll. Don't tense your tongue, it can't roll if you do that
I just sang along to a lot of Spanish/ Portugués music and it came to me with time. (When I first started learning spainish, I thought they were the same language bc of how they sounded to me 😅)
2 years ago when I was 14 I learned how to say and roll the R. Messed up a lot of words in the beginning 😂, and was quite embarrassing 😅 but it was worth it. It's not hard, everyone can learn it and don't be afraid to mess up words when you're with people, practice makes perfect 😉

As a Turkish speaker it is natural to me. We can also say other letters in this way. Like double m, double l, double t. That's why most of Turkish speakers read double letters in a wrong way for example hello, swimming..
