honestly i've been trying so hard to learn how to roll my r's..watching so many videos and practicing with my spanish speaking friends but i just cannot do it what so friggin ever. i think i have a better chance at getting pregnant and giving birth than learning how to roll my r's..and i'm a dude.
It was the same for me until I got toung surgery
I'm a native English speaker and I've always been able to LOL
You'll get there one day💗. Keep practicing 😋
That's so sad
@@naeemshaikh7981 - did you get a lingual frenectomy? I've read that it didn't help some people.

This really helps! I'm trying to learn Russian and the letter P is a rolling R sound.
Omg I got it finally after watching your video! Thanks a million!
I’ve tried 3 videos already none of them work :(
I ain’t even do the “d d d d d d d” part cause my teeth get in the way😞
Ong
I didn't know I would stuck with 'Rr' 😔
Mastering the R sound is very much like expecting your crush love you back. It happens sometimes but it's a wishful thinking mosst of the time.
Yet thanks to physics, why not curl your tongue a little to the back?
Try moving the tip of your tongue a little farther from your two, upper teeth.
I have never seen a more accurate statement in my life!
"You're tongue should naturally make that sound".
My tongue: Nope, you're just gonna whistle that F sound now
LOL LOL
I think I have a disability or something. I just can’t.
Did you get it?
@Chelsea Brooks thats what she said
Chelsea Crockett southern black people roll their r’s all the time. We always talk so fast it just happens. I’ve always talked clearer and now im paying for it n watching these videos 😂
If you look at what happens inside the mouth to pronounce the trilled r, you'll know how to do it.
Watch the video here carefully.
ua-cam.com/video/uguCSUaA45k/v-deo.html
Theres a channel called "It's Elissa, not Alyssa" and she has a really good tutorial on it and it's helped me already.
When he says "your tongue should just naturally make that sound" at 5:46, he means "magically", not naturally. There's no explaining how to "relax" your tongue, or why making the F sound and blowing out air makes the tongue vibrate. These techniques only work if you already know how to roll your R. They don't make any sense to someone who can't roll them at all. It's like trying to explain what childbirth feels like to someone who doesn't have a uterus.
Yeah that s what I'm thinking
Pretty much
u got it right man
Actually, because the q-tip keeps the tongue from vibrating, the necessary trill will never be produced.
Bummer. My stupid tongue never learned it.. all you that just tell us to 'vibrate your tongue right there' is a difficult ability later on in life to acquire.
Man I still cant roll my Rs and it irks the hell outta me
Same, im sounding like a dying animal. I keep slurring or lisping. This im am physically trying to place everything. Single r no problem.

@@shycat5905 Move your tongue a little farther. If you feel your tongue fall, move your tongue closer. The tip of the tongue should be halfway between the anterior upper incisor teeth and the retroflex ridge, which is the ridge that leads to the palate, or the “roof” of the mouth.

@Ryan_1553 yes lol
I appreciate more Spanish, and the fact you’re speaking it slowly and clearly. You’ll enjoy this little story, my best friend (who died 2015] was a Puerto Rican. He talked fast! BTW his English was laced heavily with an accent. We usually spoke in Spanish, would do Bible Studies weekly in Spanish together. One day he said something to me and I reminded him I was not Puerto Rican and for him to slow down and speak meow clearly. He repeated what he said, my response was “Rey, slow down” Which he did. Still I could not understand a word, so I said”okay, Rey, I cant understand, let’s go back to English”. His response, “but I’m speaking in English!”
Have a great day and keep those lessons coming, they are great refreshers to this old man”
AWWW! 🥰😂
Sorry for your loss ❤️
I’m so sorry 💔😞
How tf did I get raised in a Hispanic house hold but can’t speak Spanish or roll my rs
Me to Bro I'm trying to fix my Rs to
Same LOL, i used to speak fluently when I was very little, but then I grew up in a very white area, so I lost it over time haha
Been practicing off and on for 17 years but I can't give up :(
Dont give up💪🏽
This is called the voiced alveolar trill.
Now, you may be wondering: "Why is it called that?"
The alveolar ridge is a location in the mouth just behind the two most-front upper teeth.
Even though some part of the explanation is correct, you need to position your tongue such that you can trill.
The tongue isn't flat- it's curved upward so that it touches more of the upper teeth.
This means that the bottom of the tongue is touching the upper teeth, not the top part where you taste.
You should be able to perform the trill.
Here are two videos to get you started:

This is a gift. I have struggled rolling my entire life and this video got me to my first errrrrrrrre! I tried to listen to the rr lyrics at the end and translate but can’t get all of the words, it would be awesome if you could share the words in writing either English or Spanish some day. Great content. Gracias.
Keep goinggg. Ive been struggling for a while but i need to say yes and do it EVERYDAY
i cant get a sound in the ffff exricise
Try placing the tip of your tongue a little higher.
I cant get enough of your vid ♡
My R is not bad but bad. With the R not rolled, sounds like my spanish. Your videos are helping my spanish get better and better. Thanks
Thanks so much for watching! I'm glad it's helping you. That's what I'm here for!
I am all but convinced that this is a genetic thing. Like cilantro, where some people it tastes like soap, and others it does not. Some people can effortlessly do this, others can kind of figure it out, and yet others cannot get it no way, no how. The only way I can even remotely get that motor sound is using the throat, like gargling.
Ah, my thousandth video to help me learn this trill. I have never been able to do it, no matter waht. I am convinced it is genetic, like musical or academic aptitude. Or, it has to be taught in vitro.
I can move the tip of my tongue up and down quickly to mimic a trill, but my tongue does not flap freely.
The comment sections of these videos re-enforce this notion as they act as a support group for those who cannot do it.
It's crazy watching this video I feel like I'm looking at myself in 5 years lol
It took bro 3 minutes to get to the point - skip to 3:00
genuinely think I have some vocal chords missing, I cant do the brrrr to save my life
No, it’s not the vocal cords. Instead, put the tip of your tongue a little farther but not too far so that the tip of the tongue doesn’t touch the roof of your mouth, which is called the palate.
After that, let your tongue rest. Don’t try to flatten it or the trill cannot be performed.
This way, the lisping will stop and the trill will be produced. Its name is the voiced alveolar trill.
Bonus: once you succeed, try not to use your voice and see what happens.
Spoiler alert: It sounds like a fart, so it can be called the farted “r”. 😂
Funny, isn’t it?
@@einsteingonzalez4336 still cant do it. im starting to think its a genetic mutation
@@gsutta Here. Try this.

R is the most crazy letter in the Latin alphabet. You have a specific pronunciation in English, in French, in Spanish and German (two ways in each of those two) and about four different ways in Indian languages. On top of that, I’d add the Czech Ř or Polish RZ sound (they sound the same). I can guess a person’s nationality from how they pronounce their R anytime, but nobody can guess mine cause I can pronounce them all 🙂
By chance could I know when and where you were born
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've been trying since I was a kid to roll my R's. I can do the single R, but my tongue just will not stay loose enough to make the "RRRRRRR" sound. It always tenses up. I'm a little bit better at it, and it is easier if I sing, but I'm still not satisfied with it. When I speak it just sounds like I have a speech impediment.
How r u now?
Coach is that u😂

OH. MY. GOODNESS!! This worked!! I'm subscribing. I have been trying to learn this for years! I need to keep practicing but I did it. I'm on the verge of tears. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!
Wonderful! So happy it helped!
I feel like it’s impossible for me to roll my R’s 😢 my friends who don’t even speak Spanish can roll their R’s in general and I’ve been really struggling with it, Is it possible for everyone to be able to master it just with practice? Or can some people just never get it? 😭
Yes some people are just lucky.
😭😭. My brother can just “do it”
He didn’t even know it was a thing to roll R. I still can’t. I just make a blowing or Shhhh sound 😭😭😭
It is crazy to see your ad before your videos😆. The dreaded trill; I knew you would have to do this video someday. I think you are doing fine having your videos in English-you see it's working for Butterfly Spanish! I think only people who are intermediate and advanced are asking you for more Spanish.
I actually was wondering if you can explain the difference between perdón & disculpe. When do use which?
haha Thanks so much for watching! Now that i think about it. I agree with you. I will explain the difference between the two though. Thanks for the topic idea!
my tongue literally cant trill ive watched 15 videos on trilling and i havent been able to do it 😭😭😭
it's so frustrating, i already know how to do the single r because it's the same as japanese r but i have watched probably already like 13 videos and i can't get it. and when i get a "trill" it's super slow and doesn't sound like one.
This man is completely right. I got a tongue tie removed and the healing process I was given the same exercises he is doing that improve tongue flexibility
Same here ! I had a terrible lisp when I was a kid … I couldn’t make the “ch” sound (as in church, chore, chalk, etc . ) so I had to have part of the bottom of my tongue cut out and it made speaking so much easier 😅😂
This man has helped me on and off the court 😭🙏🏽

HOW IS ONE R HARDER 😭😭 i can do that no problem. it when we start to actually roll it when i cant
What are your suggestions to teach how to pronounce the soft g in Spanish like in agua, lago, paga. It sounds different than in English and English speakers often leave it out instead of pronouncing it.
HI. Would love to hear more Spanish in your videos b/c listening comprehension is definitely an area I need the most work on .
If you are tongue tied, this may be impossible.
I’ve come to the conclusion that my tongue is dead or partially paralyzed. I’ve tried practically everything. When it comes to rolling my rrr’s it feels like dead weight. I’ll keep trying but I don’t think I’ll ever master it. Not going to worry about it though. If I’m understood I’m good!
Maybe you have a tongue tie. It's worth a try looking into it. I have a mild tongue tie and it feels like this hinders me to trill my Rs
*Rocky speaks Spanish without the double R*
Me: Nope I don't like that
This was my biggest struggle with Spanish starting out. Then I took Arabic 101, because the ر consonant is geminated by the ّ shaddah, it helped me to trill the 'rr' in Spanish.
I. CANT. DO. IT.
every now and then I think I can do it now almost by accident, when pronouncing Spanish words without thinking about it consciously, but I cannot do it as a conscious effort, and at most its a two or three trill, never the long trilled r's you see from people who are good at it.
You can roll your Rs! It takes a lot of practice. I have watched so many videos and this one has the most negative comments about not having the ability to do it. You can. For some people it is harder, for others, it is waaaay harder. Even some native Spanish speakers don’t master it until a later age. There are different ways to learn, just find the right one for you.
It’s hard when classmates and “friends” shame you for not being able to 😞

Cap
I think my tongue is just broken...
My goodness you're a life saver. I've known what my mouth needs to do for weeks, but I couldn't figure out how to get my tongue to actually do it. I've been learning French my whole life so the best I can do is the guttural R, which sounds close enough but rather "throaty" and uncomfortable - not as smooth as Spanish requires in my opinion. Finally, with an hour of practice and the exercises from your video, I have spent the last 5 minutes trilling! I'm still doing a bit of a combined guttural 'r' (I can feel my uvula also vibrating) as well as the flappy tongue trill, but it's progress.
It seems to be easiest to go into it after making the 't' sound for me, combined with the air flow of an 'f'. I'm struggling a lot to do it in the middle of a word, like "carro" or ""perro".
But after taking a few minutes to type this out now I'm having trouble getting it back... But still! I'm amazed, and I'll keep working on it! Thank you so much.
I like to practice by saying "trey, trey, trey" like a tray, or Trey Parker, or "threy, threy, threy" like, well, I'm not sure what like, but this seems to get my tongue in the right place. I struggle with rolling my 'r's like the Spanish do, and I doubt it'll ever come naturally. I've gotten it to happen by accident, but trying to replicate it is difficult. I noticed that I've accidentally done it when I say words that begin with "thr" like three, through, or thrive. It's difficult to do just the 'rr' sound in isolation, and I think my tongue isn't made to do that. It's too tense, and I'm always afraid I'll spit while I say it. I would likely be considered to have a speech impediment if I were a native Spanish speaker because I think my tongue just doesn't move that way.
i can roll my r’s i just cant hold it and i cant do it without saying a word with it
I must have really thick tongue as mine does not move at all in any of these exercises
Just keep practicing!
It's just like whistling; keep trying till you get some results and replicate that but better each time.
I can't whistle either ☹️
Cool, I just need to carry a q-tip around with me and poke my tongue when I need to pronounce the rrrrr
LOL
So im Icelandic, and I just had jaw surgery after an accident about a month ago and I've realized that I've lost the ability to roll my Rs somehow which is quite problematic because I can't even properly say my own name. I can't properly speak and sound like a foreigner just learning icelandic. If there's any people who know some easy tips to relearn this that would be just great. I feel like these beginer videos aren't for me. And this is Spanish. Its kind of different here. I've done it without thinking for nearly 27 years that now im OVER thinking it. How do I stop this?
Wait a minute, you the same dude form Ilovebasketballtv?

I can roll my R's although I might be doing it with the tongue too far back! (On that bony ridge just behind where you are saying to put it.) What I have the biggest problem with is starting a word with R after a word with S, like 'los reyes, los resultados,' etc. I think when I say the S my tongue is lazy and floppy and not raised enough to pronounce the R ... it's like I have to wind up first. It would be amazing if you could address this in a video. Thank you!!
I have a question. I can roll my R but when I try to say a word while doing it I can’t really do it. Does that come with practice? I’m struggling a lot

Great lessons! Growing up my native language was english, it was very difficult for me to pronounce a lot of words correctly due to speech epitome, but for years I practice and now my voice is very smooth, and for me one of the most important factors was jaw and tongue control, most the time was my practice how to stretch and shape my tongue, and language is just like a sport you practice certain muscles for that sport and anyone could start at any moment and with determination you can truly be anything, you don’t have to come from somewhere to speak or join in on the culture when you love it and truly embrace the words, language is truly a powerful art, may you all succeed on your journey of love.

Okay, so I know this video is a year old but if anyone sees this please comment.
So, I can’t trill (roll) my r’s and the reason being is because I’m tongue tied. And trilling my r’s is really important to me because certain Korean words have a trill. So learning Spanish & Korean is really hard for me and I really wanna learn how to trill my r’s. How can one trill their r’s if tongue tied? And if anyone doesn’t know what or how someone can be tongue tied, it’s when your tongue is attached to your gums instead of the bottom of the inside of your mouth. So therefore I can’t raise my tongue fully to the top since it’s being stop. (Basically a short tongue) 🥺😂 I hate it! Please anyone, someone… HELP!!!
The exercises he shows should help. They are to stretch your tongue but you need to do it A LOT for a few months to get a good gain. If that doesn't work you probably need surgery.
I'm tongue tied aswell so I'm gonna start practicing this for the next few weeks.
