Having watched quite a lot of the old Eastender’s episodes the level of thought going into the story lines just shows what a great job the writers and actors done. It was compelling. The fact that people like you still hold strong emotions years on confirms that. I also have a different viewpoint to Phil’s character. I once viewed him as an angry thumb who seem to row with everyone - which is true lol - but his actions are reactive to insane shit going on around him. In his early days, he was peacemaker to Grant’s madness but gradually grew into the hard man role. So much madness has happened to him that his character really should’ve had shorter shelf life as he is now stale and to the point parody. All of the ‘villains’ who he has feuded with over the years came and went which was best thing to do when wanting to keep the show fresh and realistic.
