Liner Notes: So glad to finally capture a live version of this song. Sterling and I have performed it together since college (which was like 10 years ago or something). I was in town for a little while (I no longer live in Utah, since I moved to Colorado in the fall of 2014), so I took the opportunity to do a Pie gig for old times’ sake. I was joined my Jeff Hall, Sterling Cottam, Brenda Andrus-Olsen, Dave Hall (Jeff’s brother), and Bryce Bloom (who usually plays in a duo with me in the Denver area, but also happened to be in town).
Big thanks to Matt Loel. T. Hepworth, a long-time friend and great musician in his own right, for recording the audio and video for us. [You may remember Matt-he plays bass in my “Home By the Sea” video: • Home by the Sea (acous... ]

Mike Massé please come back to SLC soon
Amazing! The best cover
I’ve ever heard
"What the heck am I doing here?"
-electric guitar player
A good guitarist knows when to rest!
Jeff nailed this one. Nailed it.
Thanks!
First Africa, now America...
Will you sing about the other continents too? :P
I should maybe cover some Asia. I know someone will suggest some Europe, but nah. :)
Mike Massé Haha...
Europe would be awesome, actually. :) I wonder how a song by them would sound, reworked by you. You know, the best and most creative covers are the ones where you do a song in your own style, completely different to the original...
Jeroen Nederveen Yeah, can you imagine if Mike does an acoustic cover of that one, in his own style? Now, THAT would be really creative and I'd be really curious to hear it 8)
Think Small, do a Boston cover
Helio Ferrer He has done many Boston covers already.
Wow, absolutely stunning rendition. Beautiful, beautiful vocal harmonies.
Good lord, your harmonies make me weep with joy
Not the grand canyon, nor Californian beaches or even the big apple. Someday I'll visit the USA and the one reason will be to watch this guy playing live.
Mike is doing a live show 5 days a week now. His next show is tomorrow at 1:30 pm mountain time. He plays live music and takes requests.
"Kathy I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping, "I'm empty and aching and I don't know why." ❤❤❤
I can relate.
I also came for this sentence!
What does this sentence mean?
@@binghamguevara6814 It's actually two sentences. 1) "Kathy I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping. 2) I'm empty and aching and I don't know why. /// What do they mean? It's a story, a poem maybe. It's whatever it means to _you_ . Most people empathize with the second sentence. Confessing one's loneliness to a sleeping friend makes the loneliness a thousand times more bleak -- makes it _real_ .
kills me. every time
I have been a Simon and Garfunkel music lover my whole life. And a longtime huge fan of Mike, Jeff and Sterling's incredible covers. This one is masterfully performed as the other S&G song covers, such as The Boxer, (one of my all time favorites Mike and Sterling perform) and Scarborough Fair Canticle. Mike, Jeff and Sterling's high level of vocal talents are a rarity, and brings so much heart felt joy to my life. Much admiration and thanks for all you do. ❤❤
The Pie crowd still hasn't figured out that whole applause thing, have they? 'Still unappreciative after all these years.....' lol
Well... Apparently they go there just to eat pizza, and don't care about great music :/
JusBidniss not Paul Simon fans I guess.
Perhaps they're in shock?
Mike and Jeff put out a video just a few days ago of them revisiting the Pie Pizzeria, they talked about how and where the camera was set up and pointed to where in the corner they played. They went on to explain that Mike played there ONLY on Mon and Tues from 7-10pm and Jeff only played with him on the first Monday of every month, often it was their chance to rehearse together. They said Mon and Tues. are not nights of big crowds and sometimes relatively few people, but since the place is close to the University about the time they were closing down, thats when the crowds would start showing up and then wanting them to stay longer. But no can do,.. BOTH Mike and Jeff worked full time jobs, Mike was a Public Defender and Jeff was and still is a full time Prosecutor. ( which in hearing that , blew my mind) They also said when we could see people in the videos walking in front of the camera was because it was the only way to get to the bathrooms. It was a fun interesting info visit of the PIE and their fond memories. The were in Salt Lake City, because they were playing for and event for the Utah Bar Association up in Park City. So not are they uber talented they have brains too.
They're still crazy are all these years!
Perfect cover of one of my favourite Simon & Garfunkel songs
Sweet Dumpert sticker
Awesome job as usual! Nice to finally see a new video, although I could easily watch any of the others over and over and over... Keep 'em coming Mike!
This is just spectacular.
Throws me back to watching S&G’s Concert in Central Park as a teen. I was obsessed with it for months.
2024 - I’m 63 and still listening ❤
Stirling's harmonies on this are great (as they are on so many others with Mike) and I love Jeff's cool bass playing. ❤️
Never seen it played like that, it sounds great at the nut. I always capo it on the second like S&G. I like the intonations they way you guys do it.
Until you mentioned it, I never even considered playing this capo'ed, but I suppose it makes more sense to walk down a C chord than a D. Heh. But I like those big open E A DM7 chords on the chorus.
@@mikemasse I think you improved on Paul Simon's sound. Yours has much more "punch" to it!

Hey Mike, This was absolutely stunning! Very well done. I'm in a cover band here in Michigan and I'm totally jealous that you guys pulled this off so well!!
bass player rocks
Looks like Vincent Cassel.
Holy Smokes Donald Sutherland on Bass ? And he even rips a great little line @ 1:20
Amazing cover. Listening to it, its crazy to think all of that is from just 3 people!
You NAILED it man!!👏👏👏👏
Mike ! Where did you get the Better Off Dead T shirt ! That is one of my all-time movies !
Why I have never heard of these guys? They are freakin' awesome!
still rocking the Dumpert sticker I see!
Lol
Lol
ok, I forgot about this one also. What an incredible cover. My all time favorite Simon and Garfunkel besides the Boxer and Kathy's song.
Wow, what a wonderful cover. You really nailed these gorgeous harmonies. And that subtle bass is lovely.
Incredibly rendition. That trill you do with your voice on the “New Jersey turnpike” is flawless. I like it better than the original
Jeff looking more and more like Simon Phillips LOL Great job guys!
Is this real life or am I dreaming??? AMAZING! You make beautiful music Mike ... I need to see you perform live
Absolutely superb! It doesn't get any better! But I can't believe the apathy of the audience, they're listening to some of the best live music anywhere and can barely raise a clap....shame on them!!
I didn't even recognize Jeff Hall at first. Great work, as always!
Still rocking the Dumpert sticker :)
That was incredible! I'm tempted to move to Salt Lake City just so I can go to that pizza place and see y'all live.
"Alice your pizza is ready"
DUMPERT STICKER YEAH
Mike, you have an amazing talent! I enjoy your covers more than the originals. I hope to see you live! Always keep playing!!
Aah, such a feast to the ears! You guys sound as the reincarnation of S&G. Mike, is there any way to get your email address? I have a few suggested songs that you might want to cover.
Thanks, Mehdi. Glad you liked it. You can message me here: *mikemasse.com/contact*
Awesome Mike! Still got the dumpert guitar sticker!
am I not supposed to like it better than the original?
I'm really digging Donald Sutherland on the bass ;-)
Well done.
Another round of smooth perfection....harmonies are my most favourite thing! Lovin the curly locks, Jeff!
they fuckin killed this
haha still that Dumpert sticker on your guitar keep going guys!
Still rocking the DUMPERT sticker! Awesome.
God I love this song, always have. And of course great harmonies as always.
3:13 Either Alex and Lindsey's table or their pie is ready.
When Mike speaks he sounds just like Louie, and when he tells the crowd who they're going to play he sounds just like C. K. Not to mention he looks just like him ¿`_
Why is a Louis CK lookalike playing in a pizza restaurant doing the best Simon and Garfunkel cover that I've ever heard?
Absolutely brilliant. As a fat guy I must ask, is the pizza any good?
the guy with electric guitar.. some percussion would help...🤦♂️
Superbe vidéo, bien chanté et joué, bravo !
Great rendition of a great tune. Well done. Thanks and congrats.
Holy shit.
Great cover. Speaking America, have you ever covered "A Horse with no Name"?
Good to see Jeff
Guitarist in the middle is on strike.....I blame the musician's union myself.
thats brilliant...if you looked away you would think it was the original singers...
Wow Mike, you and Sterling absolutely NAILED the harmonies .... awesome job at your old stomping grounds!
I could barely recognize Jeff hall with that hair and Ricky shirt
Right up there with one of the best song covers - brilliant bass - oh yeah
Woah! Almost didn't recognize Jeff! Great cover guys! Please don't stop playing.
Going out for a pizza and these guys are playing at the restaurant, i would be in there all night.
I'm running out of superlatives.

I was intensely listening until I saw the pizza. Now I am hungry
That guy on the left kind looks like Paul Simon. Am I insane or what?
Nice Performance. Coming to the Pacific Northwest anytime soon?
Yes! facebook.com/events/1179267348815429/ 1/27/17 in Seattle/Tacoma. :)
These three people were comically meant to play this song together at this time.
Outstanding guys!
🍕 never tasted so good before!
Nice
The guy in the checked shirt looks a bit like Vincent Cassel
I have been waiting for you to do a cover of this song for a long time! Great work!

Love ya Louie! ekhm.. Mike!
Fabulous singing and playing!
Bass makes it.

Superb as always Mike, let me know when your in Glasgow👍🎶
This is better than the original!
That Pizza sure looks great!
That one guy was hired to act as a guitar stand 🤣

Simon Philips plays the bass too?
These harmonies are insane .

Tip jar fail @ 2:23 ( far right of screen )
wait, is that Jeff Hall for real???
Just found your videos. You are as good or better than original song. Probably better. You are a true talent!!!!!
Saginaw Baby!
I like the old MTV/vh1 info block. nice touch
Thanks for noticing. I researched the font, even. :) I'm going to use that template for now on, and I'm bummed I didn't think of it sooner!
Your voices and the pie are magical.
Die dumpert sticker ook
Mike do you ever perform drunk
Excellent job. I play acoustic gigs all over the midwest. I have to ask what mixer you use for effects for both vocals and guitar? It sounds AMAZING!
Bernie2020 guys, Bernie2020
Mike, good job once again
