This is what I'm talking about for years, everytime someone says that hxh "has good writing but bad art" really doesn't understand how the medium of manga actually works. Togashi is arguably the most refined mangaka in terms of just technical versatility in both the art and writing of manga at least within shonen jump IMO. I personally think Togashi is what he is in battle manga as to how Hidetaka Miyazaki is to RPGs.

    • @shizachan8421
      @shizachan8421 Рік тому +2

I probably would compare him more with somebody like George R R Martin in Fantasy, because Togashis big strength is that his arc is highly subversive when it comes to battle shonen standarts, some of which having been in the process of being established while he was already going a fully different route with HxH and his narrative style of tense, character-driven plotlines which feature multiple PoVs and perspectives to a much deeper extent than other Shonen stories ever allow themselves to move away from the lead, not to forget a very "everything could happen" style of writing. I mean, the current arc is basically both a fulmination and escalation of this established style, where the plot is so thick with different characters who all have their different motivations and ambitions and are connected through a web of various histories, interests, alliances and hostilities, that it could be its own political thriller series.
I'm saying this more because I kinda feel like what differents Hidetaka Miyazaki from other RPG creators is probably pretty much the opposite of what differenciates Togashi from other Shonen Mangas, Hunter x Hunter is set out in a way that you at any moment can have a clear understanding of what is going on, because it has really alot of exposition, which fits the style of the series though, which forces characters to always deeply observe and analyze their surroundings and act cautiously and tactically. Even Gon, the typical happy go lucky spontaneous shonen protagonist who just rushes into situations compared to more introverted characters has a very observational and tactical edge to him, very careful if you compare him to characters like Son Goku or Naruto. And I think it fits the core hook of what the battle shonen aspect of this series is all about, it is about hunters, not fighters. And hunters observe, they are cautious, they investigate, stalk and analyze their prey. And even in very battle intense arc, this element of the story is always present, it is always about a hunt for something.

For me that Gon ending was perfect, and in the end you see by the words of Ging what was the lesson he wanted to tell for all of us with his story.

While it is simply factual that some of the drawings in HxH are garbage, it is also just a fact that even more are gorgeous and that even the ugly ones are still used artistically well.
Art does NOT equal aesthetics, I think that is where a lot of people are lost on this. Something can be aesthetically unpleasing and yet artistically brilliant at the same time.

The 5 to 10 minutes ones are ugly, but try drawing something decent in this timeframe w/ a chronic back pain, a$$hole & then u will be able to trash talk.

I read the whole manga on an app who had the shitty early drafts of early chapters, and I never felt insulted reading it. Like, some drawings were just really simple and just a few strokes, but they somehow felt charming. Chimera ant arc is a great example, it's an arc with plenty white areas, there's a lot of loose drawings and empty scenarios but that gave it a very surreal feeling I'm not sure I've seen replicated in another manga

I’ve always held that while HxH doesn’t have the most impressive art overall, it does have the art that draws out the most emotions.
HxH will never be able to match the overall detail and quality of something like Berserk, and Berserk probably has my favorite overall art - but HxH still has my favorite individual panels, because they’re so good at drawing out emotions. Berserk is great, but no drawing of Guts draws out the sheer despair I feel looking at that panel of Shoot on the ground. Or the quiet sadness I feel in Komugi’s last moments.

@@benakinnusi2518 Yeah man I'm literally complementing Hunter x Hunter's art with my post. When I said "overall detail" I meant "over the course of the entire manga." You cannot argue that HxH has art that is overall better than Berserk. But as I said in my post, HxH still has my favorite individual panels.

i have always loved the uniqueness of the artwork and actually enjoyed seeing the variety between panels, chapters, volumes, arcs, character designs, backgrounds, etc (always saw it as variety and not "inconsistency"). maybe very much like how the entire story is more like a sandbox than a classic storyline, Togashi has also experimented with his artwork to grow as an artist and try out new things. keeps the experience flexible and fresh despite the decades passing.

YESSS this video is very well made and PERFECT!!!
If it stayed a few more hours I would have still sticked around, I LOVE hxh art ! I can keep taking about it for days!!!
The expressions are especially a highlight, togashis way of drawing expressions is very real and pretty
My favorite detail tho may be gon and killuas hair color contrasting each other (referencing ying and yang) coming together in CAA
in chapter 199 light and *shadow* killua call gon light, indicating that he belittles himself in comparison *as shadows are only part of light existence*
And the artstyle is very reflective since the more gon is fueled by darkness the more killua is "seem to be disappearing",
Until he fully disappeared by the last page of chapter 275, after gon was far gone (it's very telling that Meleoron, the guy with the disappearing powers is the one who found him,WHILE USING SSID POWERS, they didnt even show THE AUDIENCE where he was)
Gon drawn with lots of shadows(with his black hair a finishing touch) in comparison to killua whos drawn very fragile lines(with white hair as finishing touch)
And it just seems like their hair color were chosen with this exact context and I adore it
Also srry for writing so much I just really like talking about it
Thanks for the video really!! Very well made!!

Great video. Honestly not many people talk about the basics of making a manga and what constitutes a chapter. And how good all these mangakas are. I may not be a fan of Hunter X Hunter but whenever I hear someone say that Togashi should just write and let someone else handle the drawings, I just smh. In a manga, art and writing are closely interlinked. You won't get the same experience and satisfaction if these things are done by completely different people(ofc getting help is fine). Only a mangaka who is writing the series will know best how to match that with the artwork and vice versa.

Phenomenal video. I generally agree with everything stated here and it frustrates me to no end with how many people downplay and brush off Togashi's artwork an assortment of excuses. However, I'm a very massive fan of the Succession War arc, firmly believing that it simply has the best artwork, panelling, and unique storytelling, with some of the most technically impressive and beautiful spreads I've seen in any manga.
It would be interesting to see you read YuYu Hakusho and Level E, in manga format since they are Togashi's works and you see his creative muscles, philosophies in life and manga, and how mechanically savvy and intuitive he is with the pen since they also return visually and in his writing to Hunter. You mentioned how he is a master of his craft, but when you really look at his older artwork, even though it is less detailed and refined compared to Hunter, it truly paints a picture of his mastery even back then and just how far he's come.

It's been a bit but I figured I'd watch the video again, and I found something that Radman missed! Chrollo's forehead tattoo is *not*, in fact, a sort of Christian symbolism. It is instead a Buddhist symbol, the double vajra. The double vajra is a symbol representing "nothing/emptiness of the self" which is also sometimes referred to as a state of "indestructibility." I think this plays into Chrollo's character extremely well.

Great video as always Radman, shows why you are one of my FAVORITE UA-camrs out there. Just one small correction so it does not get corroborated by other people. At 16:40 you state that Togashi purposely uses the spades, clove and diamond symbols as tone indicators for the dialogue he is trying to convey. Togashi has rejected this in an interview with another Manga author, the author of Tokyo Ghoul Sui Ishida. In the interview he states that the heart symbol is the only symbol he uses to set a mood (when Hisoka likes something) and he does not have any rhyme or reason for why or when he uses the other symbols. The interview can be found on the hunter x hunter wiki (Hunterpedia). Anyways, loved the video and I agree with you that Togashi is VERY underappreciated as an artist in the Manga community.

Taking this info into account actually makes the manga even more impressive, a sign of a genius artist/writer is adding minute details that is intentionally not meant to be part of the grander narrative but still contributes in the narrative in a much smaller speculative ways, especially Togashi falls into the side of "gardener" as a writer and HxH is a sandbox of an art and narrative it is just fitting
PS: I edited the gardener part so people won't be confused

Yeah I still have some beef with the Madhouse adaptation. The first arc is the Hunter's Exam and I still don't feel like the Madhouse adaptation did it much justice. There are so many base blocks for character building there that weren't given proper care. The 1999 anime even though York Shin is a much stronger arc, people liked the Hunter's Exam but with the Madhouse adaptation people forget that arc exists. Plus really weird choices like leaving out Gon's meeting with Kite which is Gon's main driving motivation all the way up through the Chimera Ant arc.

You kept mentioning other mangas as examples but when talking about panel layout and visual story telling, you failed to mention Dragon Ball which is arguably the best example for panel structure.

I honestly think people who say the election arc would be better as a novel don't read a lot of books XD. Yes you could still capture the psychology of the characters but given that Nen is more important than it's ever been I don't see how anyone could seriously consider trying to communicate the use of it in an engaging way through text alone, definitely not possible imho

One thing I loved this that you remembered that there is something called graphic narrative.
Beautiful art without good visual storytelling is like pollution to the manga senses before being realistic megablaster whatever art without a good distribution of frames for me, the guy should be an illustrator and not a mangaka, Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) is my favorite manga artist because in addition to that alien art the way he makes his eyes wander through his eyes is like the Akira anime. It seems that the manga is animated by the movement lines giving movement of objects, scenery, characters, construction in a scene of the character making the bike skid her art is absurd or not she gains more weight when the manga builds her right through the pages.

I've read HxH for many, many years and one thing that kept me going even when the art got, well rough (early Chimera Ant), was that regardless of how rough the art was I could still see exactly what the characters were thinking and feeling. Honestly it impressed me when I went back to look at some of those chapter how easy it is to follow despite how rough the art is.

One piece's paneling and art used to be very good in my opinion. It's just becoming worse and worse, and now is when oda is at his worst. I theorize that Oda is burning himself out and not consuming/taking inspiration enough of other manga material that his strenuous manga work makes his work regress

It's a functional art and as a functional art i prefer JJK which is inspired by HxH and Yu Yu Hakusho i like togas art when adapted into animation as HxH 1999, or HxH 2011 itself because they give a solid design for the characters and settings that won't change abruptly and was less dated even at the apex in Yu Yu Hakusho Togashi's style doesn't suit me, the same thing happens with Inuyasha, it doesn't work well for me even in the most worked moments good video but I think Togashi is bad identifying that he has health problems and he does know how to draw because he has a lot of technique being used in the right way such as perspective and composition.
