A common problem with emulators today seem to be Input Latecy. Can you talk about how this was on the GPD XD? In my experience the worse offender is the SNES emulator.
I'd get one of it wasn't running an archaic version of Android. Kit Kat is four years old now, making this thing three years behind. Yes, it seems to run emulators well, but there are plenty of Android apps that require a newer version of Android, not to mention the lack of security updates.
I have one of these no buyers remorse here I love my GPD XD, as good as android emulation gets. Probably not as good as the shield but still pretty damn good!

@ETA PRIME I recommend you get a nightly build from the reicast website, the version on the xd's the one from the playstore (really old), & some games'll have graphical glitches, as well as glitches with sprites.
ETA PRIME cool, I also factory reset my xd to free up space (chinese bloatware), & it's a huge difference! I pretty much use my xd as a portable dreamcast, & some mame/arcade games, I also recommend you try ko gamebox, pretty good mame/arcade rom variety with a built in emulator.

I'm seriously thinking about to pick either the GPD XD or save some money and get the GPD Pocket Mini Netbook (simply because I loooooove netbooks) but given that I already have a S4 Mini, a S5+, one of the 8bitdo SNES controllers (sadly the US variant tho) and my Dualshock4 to hook up to those, I question why to pick up another Android device that's not even getting ROM support from the AOSP community? On the plus side tho, the XD is low priced, does most games well enough (come on, even Android software can run on Android4.x just fine, at least if we're talking about games) and seems to feel just like a 3DS minus the buttom screen. Seriously, that's a rough decision to make.

Could it also be because it's running off emmc and not an SD card or do you think it may be a contributing factor of the smoothness of the emulation along with the emulator which has been tweaked? I'm going to say.. Get a regular copy of mupen64, a copy of the "new" mupen64 and have a, what I like to affectionately call... A mupéoff.. Basically gather Intel such as the size in mb of ROM, version of ROM, then do a comparison of each ROM split screen showing the nuances between them and the framerates.. Perhaps even, copy their version onto another device and see of the effect is the same or better/worse.. Maybe make a device from the ground up and grab all the best versions of emulators you've seen and a frontend that you've noticed run particularly smooth and make a beast device.. Thanks for the review of this.. Looks great.. Can't wait for a ps2 emulator that actually works smoothly enough on android.. Or if someone could get hyperspin working on anything besides an nvidia shield, would be great.
Preety good review. A solid one. Usually people test those emuluators with the most common and not demanding games. Like Mario 64, Mario Kart etc... I dont get it... Emulators are most of the time highly optimized for the most popular games... thats not helpful at all if you're interessted in tech.
I just bought one... you can put the games on the 32GB (or 64GB model) in a folder called "roms", via the usb cable. Each emulator have it's own folder and you create a new folder for each game... there is an ic.p file, it's a 80x80 bitmap for the icon... and/or for emulators that it don't bring along, lets say Game Boy Advance, you can place anywhere you want, and then look up the folder on the emulator itself...
Regarding Conker's and other problematic N64 games, I've had a similarly good results on Android devices by setting GLES_rice mode with RetroX. I know they didn't put RetroX on the GPD (that would be cool) but they might be using the same video emulation type.
Hi ETA Prime, If you're using this hooked up to a tv through the hdmi and using a usb controller with an otg adapter, would it be possible to get the unit to charge at the same time by using a powered usb hub? The one thing I don't like about this thing is the lack of a full size usb port, and the lack of bluetooth. How could you charge this and use a usb controller at the same time? Thanks
I have my gpd xd for two weeks and I absolutely love it, although I removed everything and install some emulators, retroarch and arc browser; now this thing shine, and set it to launcher3 just simple android default launcher. as i don't like metro launcher. happy chick and all the other default apps are great to start with, but after awhile it's pain, the battery is fantastic, on thing grinds my gears is retroarch controller setup, it can sometime register two controller when launching games and have to exit retroarch and restart it even though it's set to ps3 controller on gpd xd, ETA prime could you do a setup video for psp game as mine runs like crap except for little big planet, thanks... great vid

Hi, I have this device since 2 years, It's a very good device but there is a problem with the Battery. When you do not use it for an longer time the batery will lose it's charge and go to deep loading mode and here starts the problem the logick controller blocksthan charging and you can not charge th battery anymore. I allways have to open the device and charge it manualy until the voltage is high enugh for the logic controller and than I can play and charge as normal.
the great thing about android is you can hack it and put the latest android version on it if you wanted it or you can reskin it with a UI app to make it look like the newer interface.
Brick Tamland you can flash a rom called legacyrom to enable 1.8ghz however the device is locked in at kitkat no other development is happening, something to do with mali drivers being dogshit in future builds

you don't need a lot of the drivers as it is not a phone or tablet device. you don't need cell features, you don't need a gyro to work, you don't need anything but the wifi, controls, display and sound to work.

Yes, it can. I had the XD for some time & only a few PSP games, but they ran well... The most struggle it had was with Gran Turismo since the fps were dropping here & there on certain maps, but the game was pretty much playable
Scoot Shelnut to be honest I tried NBA 2k2 and it got to the title screen and went black. Maybe I'll try 2k1 and NFL 2k that's all I need for the Dreamcast those games were fire
