I got one about a month ago pretty much specifically to play Shenmue. There is a custom ROM available which allows you to increase the CPU speed (the default ROM is actually underclocked). This produces a noticable improvement in the performance of several of the heavier emulators. Also it gets rid of Happy Chick which is a bunch of busted and out of date emulators and the rest of the bloatware. Great unit, especially for the price. Great review! One thing I dont think you mentioned is that it is a great way to play a huge number of Android games that play better with physical controls.
This thing looks amazing. It's literally everything I've wanted in a handheld. My arrives from Amazon on Wednesday. Currently I am playing ROMs on my Rasberry Pi connected to a PC monitor. It's great but unfortunately it experiences significant lag with many N64/PS1 games because it's just not powerful enough, not to mention not portable. Looks like this will fix all of that, not to mention I can stream my steam games from my PC, and use all my other android apps? I am surprised it's only $250 honestly.
it's an amazing piece of kit indeed. Had one a while now and it's been fantastic. It's also great when you plug in a HDMI cable and connect it to the TV and you can play it on the big screen :)
Looks really slick would be a great way for me to plays some PS1 games on the go as I currently use my Vita but the vita's PS1 library is very limited.

just a correction. the gamepad button is not a onscreen gamepad for onscreen play. it maps the physical controls to a game that requires touch. This is used for games with no built in gamepad control features, you would map on screen buttons to the game touch screen control UI. so when you press ABYX buttons it counts as a touch on the touch screen. same for joystick,

Do you happen to know how I change my buttons assignments? Just got this, and on Mario 64 the select but is the butt stomp and long jump button, and as it's kinda important is some aspects of the game, it's really hard to do in normal gameplay. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

It is more a "Gaming tablet" than a "mini pc". If you want to see what a "mini pc" looks like, check out the GPD Win (or the mini pc they made that has no gaming controllers). ;)
Im torn having being spoilt with the shield portable for 3 years before it gave up the ghost. Do i get this (fits in the pocket!) Anouther shield. If you get one/have one, ditch that shitty Happy Chick emulation and get proper ones. You can get them all online for free with much better emulation and far more options. If you are curious, I can give you a list of all the emulators I have that run games perfect
John Doe They are much better. Setting up is easier, more options, better emulation due to dedicated emulators, a much simpler interface. All the emulators I got run at 100% speed from PS1 anf anything under that.
I think i going to switch off happy chick. I have see people talk about legacy rom being better. Did you also switch to that along with more dedicated emulators?
it looks awesome, im not very pc savvy and ive never downloaded a game before (apart from the eshop). does everything you need to download a game come pre installed as i wouldnt know where to begin.

Try the remastered android versions of Sonic the hedgehog or Soul Calibur. These well-known retro games will be running smoothly with HD graphics and 16:9 aspect ratio on your GPD. These remastered games have auto mapping to the GPD buttons.

It's just not working right... Resets itself, won't load games or apps. Even factory reset it but it's still not working right... I'm thinking it's the SD card
if your sd card is formatted to exFAT then change to FAT32 this helped a lot with stability issues i was having. maybe installing new firmware could fix things too
About HappyChick, I read that that emulator isn't that good so I would like to add some other emulators on it. Should I download it on the device itself or first to my PC and hook it up to the device? And where to get the specific games for each emulator?

it's an amazing piece of kit indeed. Had one a while now and it's been fantastic. It's also great when you plug in a HDMI cable and connect it to the TV and you can play it on the big screen :)

for mame you want the newer build mame4droid (0.139u1) which uses the 0.139 rom set
