I'll never forget, a few years back I was blasting this song and pulled up to a red light. The dude next to me rolled down his window, tapped on my window, and asked me what song this was. He was pumped about it lol
What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing? "Can't you tell that your tie's too wide?" Maybe I should buy some old tab collars? "Welcome back to the age of jive. Where have you been hidin' out lately, honey? You can't dress trashy till you spend a lot of money." Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me What's the matter with the car I'm driving? "Can't you tell that it's out of style?" Should I get a set of white wall tires? "Are you gonna cruise the miracle mile? Nowadays you can't be too sentimental Your best bet's a true baby blue Continental." Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk It's still rock and roll to me Oh, it doesn't matter what they say in the papers 'Cause it's always been the same old scene. There's a new band in town But you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine... Aimed at your average teen How about a pair of pink sidewinders And a bright orange pair of pants? "You could really be a Beau Brummel baby If you just give it half a chance. Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers, You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers." Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways It's still rock and roll to me What's the matter with the crowd I'm seeing? "Don't you know that they're out of touch?" Should I try to be a straight 'A' student? "If you are then you think too much. Don't you know about the new fashion honey? All you need are looks and a whole lotta money." It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways It's still rock and roll to me
Daisies of the Galaxy is one my top5 album of all time. The whole disc is pure diamond. It gives me the full energy and emotion of life! I would carry it wherever I go... Eels is the sound of my lightning dreams!
@Redrobottyler i think the song is about how we misjudge everything and everyone based on what we see... how the fly and mouse annoys us but thet are actually struggling for their lives. and the cop and the nun who aren't actually the way they seem on the outside. yeah, tou know what I mean. you can refrase it all you want. peace, out :)
To me it's just a delicious bit of honesty about how we all have little, horrible things we do to deal with life's frustrations, but keep secret, because you can't live your life out loud. I take this song quite literally.
Listened to this song towards the end of high school, in my freshman year of college i wrote a full report on "United States of Tara" and when the instrumentals to the beginning of this song started during my very zoned-in watch, i immediately felt amazing because this song is so bumping
so like i used to watch eddsworld back in like the late 2000s/early 2010s, never really checked what music they used. Like a week ago I’m getting album recommendations from my dad, and he sends me Souljacker and Electro-shock Blues. I check out the comments on the “That’s not really funny” video and find out that Eddsworld actually used a bunch of Eels music. For some reason this is just a really surreal feeling, that something I’m interested in now in college has connected from something to way earlier in my childhood
The lead singer is giving a voice to the slightly dark side of the will to live. It blinds us to the needs of others out of necessity. In order to survive we have to fulfill our mortal needs, ultimately we just have to get through the day. A lot of it is summed up by the man with a test tube stumbling from the ocean. Clearly he thinks what he's doing is important, but nobody else understands why he's struggling (we're all like unknowing children). So nobody helps. It's a song about consequence
Little field mice Living under the house Never eating much Tough life for a mouse And if you think you're Gonna be spared You're wrong Field mice, head lice Spiders in the kitchen Don't think twice 'bout Whatever keeps you itchin' Ice water, flyswatter Gonna get you through The day Heat is rolling in like Hell's red rug Stinking like the Breath of Beelzebub And if you think you won't Walk on coals You will Field mice, head lice Spiders in the kitchen Don't think twice 'bout Whatever keeps you itchin' Ice water, flyswatter Gonna get you through The day The day Field mice, head lice Spiders in the kitchen Don't think twice 'bout Whatever keeps you itchin' Ice water, flyswatter Gonna get you through The day That's real good Oh yeah
That is where I heard this song too, Jack. It gave the ad a very familiar or nostalgic feel even though never hearing the song or seeing the show before.
At 3:05 "That's real good", yea, that's what I say, REAL good. Extra specially good. I'll have to watch that part again. Excellent song, took me some tries to get that scale down.
I think I understand. Partially. You kill the things that bother you, such as swatting a fly, regardless of the fact that it is already struggling to live. The mouse has a tough life, yet we consider it a pest. Next it shows is deviants, like the cop skipping through the forest or the nun. Not sure how that ties in. The song also refers to how you will be judged no matter what, even if you think nothing of the deeds you have done.

@YonDoll In the Jim Carry Movie, "Yes Man". Right after the 1 min after the baby shower scene. We see jim leave his ex's apartment, and head to an elevator that seems to sop working once inside. The music is cued here.
I suspect a few decent reasons exist for cryptic and sometimes jarring symbolism or concepts. A lot of music that I find to me most profound are often containing some concept that is jarring. Perhaps some kind of a balancing mechanism.

That's so cool!!
Your work is done 💜
Saw someone asking what genre this is
It's just Eels, Eels is a genre

pretty bland indie rock to be fair.

This is one of those music videos that I would love to have explained in detail by the artist themselves.
even themselves don't understand all they did x)

'under surveillance' bordering on gangstalking
I have asked my drugs, and they don't get it.
But they like it.😊
I wrote two unpublished novels about an Elf running a Detective Agency in Modern Scotland just so I could imagine this as the theme song.
Ever thought of uploading them anywhere on the internet or putting them on Amazon's indie publishing section? I'd read the hell out of those.
So? I wrote 6 unpublished novels and this is the theme to all of their unproduced film adaptations.
I'll be the judge of that.

aren't they Uk legends
Alone and happy for me personally, not lonely.
My father used to listen this in the car with me. I was 8. Thats why i'm so disturbed

One of the few good parts about high school, listening to the Eels
Eels straight up saved me in high school. Some of the most relatable music of all time tbh
Love the bird sitting Mr E's bass
I like...
birds
Was into that too, right off
I Like Birds too
2023 and this song still lives in my head rent free
Starts guitar solo
Sun is high in the sky
Ends guitar solo
Sun is setting over bay
Has he been soloing for five hours straight?
Mojoforthewin wouldn’t put it past him
Story of his life. Kind of.
I absolutely love 1990's-2000's songs. Rn my fave songs r Scooby Snacks and this
The final music outro (over which he says "that's real good") all the way up to the bass outro fadeout is a very fine piece of music...
Трек гипнотизирует, завораживает. Уже месяц не отпускает, циклично проигрываясь в голове.
That's Eels for you
The beginning part of this song reminds me of a lot of the tracks from the soundtrack of the movie Coraline, especially "Mechanical Lullaby".
That was they Might Be Giants
that bassline is so cooooool

So do I. Brilliant, isn’t it?
Yeah the whole album makes me sad and bittersweet happy for the time in life it reminds me of. Love the Eels.
That instrumentals between 2:11 and 2:30. Such a gem.
That it's shot on film (I assume) makes it so much better.

Wasn't this song used in the opening theme of some mid/early 2000 show? It sounds so familiar but I can't put my finger on it.
