My lovely friend passed away at the end of November. She picked this song as her farewell song. I’ll always think of her when I hear it now. What a legend she was picking this. She said rock music always needs to be played extra loud. X

When this song came out, it blew everyone away. All the elements of modern music: rock guitar, rap, new wave keyboards, and pounding rhythm section, all combined to create such musical tension. It was so ground-breaking at the time. Thank you Faith No More for taking chances and pushing boundaries.
I'm not sure how many people understand how amazing Mike Patton's vocals are. He sounds like like about 50 different musical artists. That's how diverse and wonderful his singing is!

So true....I was 17 in 1989....I liked it but got tired of hearing it. Seemed like they played this, Guns n Roses, Anthrax, and Metallica's "One". Which is funny because Metallica at the time had only one music video. Music was segregated. There was Yo MTV raps, headbangers ball, whatever Allen Hunter liked and I remember for a brief time Dwezil Zappa as a VJ and he played a crazy mismatch of wtf he wanted. Remember Randy of the Redwoods? Now you are a true middle aged MTV used to watcher.

Dude, they were just a Chili Peppers clone. Anthony Kiedis was very critical of their success, given that Mike Patton ripped off Kiedis style so much during these years. Mike Patton always talks about "being original" but the only thing he's ever really done is akin to sampling old music people don't care about or have forgotten about and stamping it out as "new".
Juan Cortez Yes and no. They were able to work a metal guitarist into a new wave sound, which is impressive, but the hard funkiness was already done by the Chili Peppers at this point, and even Funkadelic before that.
Not sure about the rest of their catalogue, but this (as good as it is) is a shameless Chili Peppers rip off, from the funk backing, to the white-boy rapping style, to the clothes, to the hand movements, and even to the "quirky" faces he's making
This song came out when my son was learning to walk. I remember crawling all around the house so I could be at his eye level to move things out of the way so he wouldn't get hurt or break things. I spent about 5 years back in the 90s waiting for them to play this song on the radio, hoping they would say the name of the bands name. Specifically because of the intro. It did something to me that I never knew music could do.
@@SunDogGod I listened to both growing up, and have to disagree. If you listen to any of the early to late 80's Peppers, there was a lot more funk to the songs with heavy bass rifts. Rock mixed with rap was also nothing new during that time with the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Anthrax, etc. The only thing similar is the aesthetics of the leadsingers having bith long hair, very animated, rapping and singing, but the sounds from both bands sound quite different. FNM leans more rock, and the Peppers leans more funk.

My wife and I were downtown Saginaw, Michigan when this song came on the radio. We both reached for the volume nob. It gets cranked to 10, with pioneer stereo and asskickin speakers. I look over, and my wife is head banging in time with mine. I look passed her to see the soccer mom keeping time with us in the next car over. My wife does the same thing and sees a guy in the truck next to me also keeping time with us. Then they notice we are keeping time with them. The guy throws a two fingered rocker sign, and the soccer mom throws us a piece sign as the light turns green and we go our separate ways. Synchronicity.

@@monstro3874 oh I didn't just listen to FNM. I loved Mr Bungle too, Mike is just on another level when it comes to singers of that era, or any era for that matter. I loved the Chili Peppers EXCEPT for Kiedes and his obvious inferiority complex when it came to seeing someone do what he thought was HIS style just much better. He can't sing for shit, whereas Mike is on the level of an opera singer he has so much control. So Anthony got butthurt and wouldn't do shows with them, etc and FNM got their potential massive fame cut short. Kind of a shame for many who barely got to hear them much, but those of us who did know who the real badass was. Truly legendary band...
This song sounded so good through my foam covered headphones...plugged into a not-sony walkman as I skated to school and around town....then it sounded even better in my first car, with that dual exhaust V8 rumble underneath it...And then it sounded even better when my mom heard it and liked it....Now, in my twilight years, it sounds even better, because it brought back all those moments.
Fun fact: a guy went to live with his grandmother after attempting suicide. He was lying on the couch, wondering where his life would take him, then this song came on. Yeah, one has to make sacrifices to achieve certain desires, and by doing so one won't be able to achieve other different desires. Going down one path blocks other paths. Is that supposed to be some profound "message"? Because normal people on the street know this once they've lived for a while. Children want it all, but adults know that sacrifices have to be made.

A go-to band when you want to remember your youth and carefree times. My brother introduced me to so many bands as a kid including FNM, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Live, Soundgarden to name a few. He would copy tapes for me so I would have my own instead of stealing his 😊I still listen to these bands 30+ years on. Good times. Happy memories. Great music.

These guys really blended genres. Very unique. The ending where they close out with that piano just demonstrates to me that they are true musicians....... You can see how the notes played in those piano lines are really the foundations of the whole song... I truly appreciate how good this song is. I would venture to say that when this song was released we were ALL shook! We had never heard anything like it before. It dropped like a bomb!
This video scared the hell out of me as a toddler. I remember my uncle loved this song and cranked it up any time he saw it on TV. Many years later it popped up in the radio and I loved it since.
This song means more to me than mere words could describe. More than anything i've felt from life, the first time I felt love, fear, happiness, etc. I was 4 years old standing in front of a TV when this video came on MTV in 1990. And I still vividly remember how mesmerized I was by it, it completely enraptured me into a feeling I cannot explain. Even then, as a small child I felt something pulling at me, and tonight I realized it was a born cherishment for music. And now as I grow older I feel it growing with me. And as many insane musical binges I go on, Epic will always be the meaning for all of it.

Got to hang with Mike and Jim Martin at the Bayou in Washington DC. During this tour. They came out after sound check and my friends and I chatted with them for over an hour. Jim bumming cigs. Cool as hell to hang with. Snagged Mike's watch when he was crowd surfing. Went to give it back but he tool me to keep it. Circus of Power opened. Awesome night. Went on to meet Mike a couple more times.

I knew about Faith no more a very long time... but when I accidentally remembered them, I listened again and just fell in love. These guys are simply the best and now one of my favorite bands. Mike is fantastic in every way.. Guys clearly know their business and do it well, not to mention how they give all the best at concerts. A real treasure❤️
They are truly underrated, Mike is an absolute legend. One of the most creative and dynamic singers of all time, no matter the genre. And extremely shrewd as well, they understood the business and kept their artistic integrity at the same time. Legends...

FNM didn’t need a lawsuit, getting kicked out of a gig where RHCP was performing was just good enough to make them so angry that they had to mock them at an October fest later on that year. Faith no more is just one of those bands that just didn’t make the cut, it’s why you don’t hear about them, I heard about them from a RHCP documentary rofl. When you say Def, you mean Def Leppard, right? I just want to clarify, as I can hear some similarities in the drumming. As for FNM versus RHCP, I've never met FNM but did have the pleasure of having breakfast at an airport with RHCP in 1995. They were nothing but nice, cordial (They passed me the jam a the communal table). Look, I totally get that FNM is cut from the same cloth as Oingo Boingo, Ratt, or the Hoodoo Gurus, as what they all have in common is it's just fun music to blow off steam to. However, this doesn't make them generic, or formulaic, it just means that they don't take themselves as seriously at Flea or Anthony Keadis (Though Flea was great in The Big Lebowski). @@lilprotein It's early here (Costa Rica), but late where you are. I was given a copy of their tape from the record store. In the day I was a DJ working in a niche that didn't really play this sort of music. However, I played it whenever there was no queue at the bar to keep that drink sales up. People didn't dance to it much but the patrons waiting at the bar had their air guitars and drum sets rockin'.

@@SunDogGod I listened to both growing up, and have to disagree. If you listen to any of the early to late 80's Peppers, there was a lot more funk to the songs with heavy bass rifts. Rock mixed with rap was also nothing new during that time with the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Anthrax, etc. The only thing similar is the aesthetics of the leadsingers having bith long hair, very animated, rapping and singing, but the sounds from both bands sound quite different. FNM leans more rock, and the Peppers leans more funk.
This is one of those songs that INSTANTLY evokes memories of MTV and Beavis & Butthead for me.

I look over, and my wife is head banging in time with mine. I look passed her to see the soccer mom keeping time with us in the next car over. My wife does the same thing and sees a guy in the truck next to me also keeping time with us. Then they notice we are keeping time with them. The guy throws a two fingered rocker sign, and the soccer mom throws us a piece sign as the light turns green and we go our separate ways. Synchronicity.

I loved the Chili Peppers EXCEPT for Kiedes and his obvious inferiority complex when it came to seeing someone do what he thought was HIS style just much better. He can't sing for shit, whereas Mike is on the level of an opera singer he has so much control. So Anthony got butthurt and wouldn't do shows with them, etc and FNM got their potential massive fame cut short. Kind of a shame for many who barely got to hear them much, but those of us who did know who the real badass was. Truly legendary band...

He would copy tapes for me so I would have my own instead of stealing his 😊I still listen to these bands 30+ years on. Good times. Happy memories. Great music.

Same. I saw FNM live in 1990 my 1st concert ever with Billy Idol at The Forum in LA. I was 14 years old. Will never forget this band because of it.
This video scared the hell out of me as a toddler. I remember my uncle loved this song and cranked it up any time he saw it on TV. Many years later it popped up in the radio and I loved it since.
This song means more to me than mere words could describe. More than anything i've felt from life, the first time I felt love, fear, happiness, etc. I was 4 years old standing in front of a TV when this video came on MTV in 1990. And I still vividly remember how mesmerized I was by it, it completely enraptured me into a feeling I cannot explain. Even then, as a small child I felt something pulling at me, and tonight I realized it was a born cherishment for music. And now as I grow older I feel it growing with me. And as many insane musical binges I go on, Epic will always be the meaning for all of it.

Worse, she was carrying an open razor and as she broke her neck managed to sever Dad's jugular. My dear ol grandpappy laughed so much his appendix burst and he died in a pool of blood by the fireplace. Granny just sat there staring as he gurgled. Still, love FNM and play it every day.

When you say Def, you mean Def Leppard, right? I just want to clarify, as I can hear some similarities in the drumming. As for FNM versus RHCP, I've never met FNM but did have the pleasure of having breakfast at an airport with RHCP in 1995. They were nothing but nice, cordial (They passed me the jam a the communal table). Look, I totally get that FNM is cut from the same cloth as Oingo Boingo, Ratt, or the Hoodoo Gurus, as what they all have in common is it's just fun music to blow off steam to. I was given a copy of their tape from the record store. In the day I was a DJ working in a niche that didn't really play this sort of music.
