Let the hunt begin!! Trying to figure out what boat to buy is a really hard decision. There are so many different factors to consider. How many people will live aboard? Where do you want to sail the boat? How much is your budget? Is the boat in good condition? Is it priced correctly? Does the owner seem thoughtful and did they love this boat? Do you have the skills to fix any of the obvious problems? What could be the potential less obvious problems? We could have mulled these questions over FOREVER, but then we'd never have made a decision :)

So happy to have found you as you start this new adventure!
Its's amazing being able to see your journey. It makes me wanna go on my own adventures and i think thats pretty cool. I'm excited about what is happening next!
I have never dealt with boat life, but it's already now sooo interesting that I definitely want to follow your new journey. I wish you only the best, greetings from Austria 😍🥰
This adventure is so absolutely exciting! I cannot wait to go on this journey with you guys. Sailing/ boat channels are my favorite and I can’t wait to see what you guys have in store. Love your style and personalities! 🙌
So excited for you! I was going to do this with my partner many years ago but life got in the way. So now I can do it vicariously with you guys! As always, beautiful little video. Much love to you from Australia 🌏🐨❤️💕
What a great video, loved the music, loved the content and love the way the story is unfolding. Hats off to each of you, transitions are tough yet.....you make it seem like every day is a new adventure. Loved the animation!!!!! Can't wait to see what the final boat decision is!!!! Counting the days to the next video
You are doing great. Don't mind gatekeepers and people who want to "show" themselves off and brag about years of experience. Or jealous and toxic people. Don't let anyone derail your plans. Enjoy yourselves!
WOW!!! AMAZING!!! CRAZY!!!
I bought a boat last October and most people said you're mad, crazy etc. Even I thought so too !! However, I live in the UK and the boat I bought is a narrowboat! And I LOVE IT !! I'm 53 years old and certainly having an adventure! I totally admire your decision to buy an ocean going boat, that takes balls guys!! I wish you all the best in the next chapter of life's adventure . Can't wait to see how it goes .
i bought my second yacht when I was 72 years old. heheh The ocean has not changed since i had my first yach when i was 30. godd luck and best wishes and happy sailing

it's so cool that your brother is coming with you on this journey!
Good luck with everything! Thanks for sharing.
I saw you van build and the adventures you had last year and now you're sailing around the world .. that is amazing I wish i can do something like this in the future >>>> also your videography and storytelling is improved dramatically .. I love it
This is so fun to watch! Starting as a novice will make it even more satisfying to finally get on the water.
Soooo excited to see join your new journey, also really nervous about the struggles ahead. Hope you guys find the perfect boat 💖
Can't wait to see your choice. Also, so much production value in these! Beautiful!

Super excited for your next chapter!!!
This is such a great adventure... Cant wait to see the sailing adventures !!!!
Love your videos, can't wait for next weeks
Oh how fascinating and such a lot of travelling. I am really pleased you shared some definitons and tech stuff to keep us in the loop. Good luck making the final decision. Hello from Lockdown London, UK : - )
Your editing and shots have gotten so beautiful over time. It's been awesome watching you improve over the years
It's going to be quite an experience for all of us that watch your channel, thanks for sharing your life and times with us.
So excited for this sailboat journey! Been watching your van life for awhile and this was such a pleasant surprise for us sailors! We’re based outside of Annapolis as well! can’t wait to see where this goes. Maybe we will meet one day on the blue 🙏☀️✨
Woah! I started watching you guys to learn about van builds and tips for living on the road because I was about to leave my life behind to live in my girlfriend's car. Now we live in a sailboat and its amazing. I hope you love it as much as we do!
When you're ready to buy, make sure you get an inspector to inspect it.
This absolutely. The fiberglass can get osmosis and delaminate in the boats from the 70's & 80's and when that happens you might want to look elsewhere.
You will love it!
I have spent every summer on a small sailing boat, from being a one month old baby until I was 19 years old, together with my parents of course 😉. I still miss it and visit them when I can (they are 69 and 74 years old, still sailing from May to September as much as they can).
Some tips 😉
Make sure that the sails are in good condition, they cost a lot to buy new.
The engin need to have easy access 👍
Do not start to rip out the interior until you lived in the boat in water for a while, some things might seems like it is built kind of strange, but it will probably have a very good reason for being like that 😊
Check for mold, every where before you buy a boat!
Make sure that the stove is "hangning" so you can use it when the sea is high.
And make sure to Always! Always! close the hatch, ventilation or other "doors to the outside" upfront when sailing, especially if someone is sleeping in the front cabin! You will only make this misstanke once!
And also, you need an autopiloten!
Make sure to sail to Swedens East Coast and check out the amazing archipeligo.
Love to follow your story!
(And about geting sea sick, stay in the back of the boat outside that is the best place not to get sick. Inside and up front is the worst 🤢)
Good to watch your video in this new normal!
I'm excited to go on this new chapter with you both!
I liked the second boat in the video best. If y'all were veteran sailors you could make a better judgement call on a fixer-upper, but as beginners you don't want to bite off more than you can chew. Unlike van life, the ocean is a lot less forgiving of mistakes. I'm looking forward to the next video, good luck!
I'm getting excited just thinking of you guys going on trips after getting the ⛵
We are almost as excited as you are as you search for a suitable boat to continue your adventures! We traveled in a 1985 Mercedes 409d a few years ago, and could really relate to your experiences. It was painfully slow, haha. Good luck to you guys! Jud and Liane. Oh and Bisbee dog too.
Yay!! I get so excited to see your vids. although i cant this month, i wanna buy your ebook and maybe become a patron next month!
So exciting!! Can’t wait for the decision!!
We did this with houses: saw 10 houses in 1 day as we had to move FAST, and specifically picked ones that weren't going to be for us but to learn a bit about what to notice/look for/consider. Also I grew up sailing my grandparents boat (32 foot, 35 with bowsprit) as a kid and the insides of these boats took me waaaaay back.
I’m currently just beginning my search for a sailboat home. I love getting to see your process while I’m going through mine!
Currently selling “Salt & Light” a 41 foot full keel, 1978 Taiwanese built katch.
LOVE the patches!
Ever since I watched the movie Adrift I'm kinda freaked out about sailing but I feel like this upcoming adventure watching you guys will definitely change my mind!
I really like the 'info part' about bluewater sailboats in your vlog. Made me watch the whole thing despite the fact I travel the world in a CAR (: Also, your voice-over is really pleasant! Good luck 👋
Yeay. Like the rassy... they nice, good luck so exciting
As a person who gets REALLY sea sick having a boat isn't really in the cards for me but it's so cool to see you guys taking on a new adventure!
Everybody gets sea sick. And everyone is getting over it. Ask any cruiser how they feel when they go back on the boat after a little break on shore. 🥴
Amazing new adventure!
this. is. so. exciting !!
Wow! Here we go! This is really something. But I'm also really interested in the dynamics of traveling with your brother. Not sure oof we could do something like that long-term in tight quarters. I mean, we just like our private couple time and guard it vigorously. Maybe that's from being in our 50's, post family raising, and the two of you are coming off of 2 or 3 years of spending every single moment together in a van, lol!
Welcome to the world of yacht shopping, first off, you are definitely in my humble opinion looking at the right sort of boats, encapsulated long keel/full keel heavy displacement hulls are the best designs for off-shore sailing, centre cockpit would be a really great option for you as novice sailors. GET AN OUT OF WATER SURVEY is the best advice I can give you, from what I can see you are too interested in the internal layout and not enough in the bones and mechanics of the boat, ie the spars, standing rigging, type of rig (masthead, Bermudan,or fractional sloop, cutter, ketch, etc, etc) steerage, propulsion, deck core water ingress(if cored), skin fittings and sea cocks, winches, sail inventory, safety equipment, tankage, batteries, electronics etc etc. Pay more attention to the working elements of a sailboat, PS the following would be my preferences, Perry designs(multiple manufacturers) Hans Christians, Crealock designed Westsails/Pacific Seacraft, Island Packets, Bruce Roberts designs, most will be home built, Tayanas, Cheoy Lee and Ta Chiao, that is not to say that a benneteau or any other bolt on fin keel spade rudder plastic fantastic can't make a good off-shore capable boat, many people have done trans-oceanic passages on such boats. PPS, try and crew on some off-shore passages to build up your experience. And don't be afraid to sail in 35+ knots putting in 3rd reefs and the storm jib, and practice heaving to, greatest maneuver in sailing, good luck with the boat shopping, Hands off the Perry Hans Christian 34' cutters. God bless and stay safe
"from what I can see you are too interested in the internal layout and not enough in the bones and mechanics of the boat" I feel like if they are worried about the mechanics of the boat they wouldn't necessarily include it in the video because that doesn't make great content for the average viewer. It's much more fun for some who doesn't know anything about boats to watch them judge the interior design
I agree with what you say except I think that modern yachts with short keels sail a lot better in light to medium air. When the wind get up it can get rough and more often than not sailing is not an option. Just sit it out. I often put my first reef in main before i leave the marina as I can carry a full head sail for longer and its easier to furl the head sail than to put in a reef in the main. Sailing can be a lot easier and safer if people know what they are doing and use a little common sense. Problem is tooo many vids on youtube not giving realism to owning and sailing a yacht. A mate of mine with a 38 ft yacht said there always seems to be something to do on a yacht. He got that right. best regards
Can't wait to see which one you guys bought!!
You and your brother look so alike!!! I am so excited for your adventures with the addition of the new member!!!
Aww I'm so happy you have gone onto your new adventure.
I'm still building my van and one day would love a boat. Xx
Please come and join my journey and my heart is so warm with the excitement for you and your new adventure.
Sending love xx
Hi guys, I am so excited for your new adventure! A rainy day is a perfect day to see a boat, it reveals all the leaks, I wish it was raining when we were buying our boat☔🤔
Hope to see your new home soon 😍best of luck
My boyfriend and I love your channel so much. His family is currently selling their boat “Salt & Light” a 41 foot full keel, 1978 Taiwanese katch. Just letting you know in case you all haven’t made your decision yet. Otherwise good luck and thanks for such great content!
Can’t wait to see it ... hello from Connecticut
Yes on the Halberg Rassy 35. We have an Island Packet 35. No on any boat with spade rudder, will just break off offshore when you hit something.
Whatever the purchase price add at least 20% for getting it up to speed. Concentrate on the big ticket items condition. Engine, sails and rigging. If they are good and the hull is sound you can work on most everything else as you go. Good luck in that price range, it is possible.
I hoping you've budgeted for the 'after purchase/before casting off' phase - anticipate that to cost at least 25-50% of the purchase price. Good luck
Hallberg Rassy's are built in Sweden. They are amazing boats, designed by German Frers. They are built for the Northern latitudes and do well in heavy seas. Get an inspection and get ready to work. All boats, old, new or in between require ongoing attention. Good luck and all the best!
Add Najad and Sweden yachts to that too, may as well add nautors swan to that list, Id feel safe in high latitudes in all of the above
HR's are great off-shore cruising boats, not much to choose between all of them
Love Following you. Silver lining people, very upbeat!
You get your sea legs but here's quick lesson in sailing lingo:
Boats don't have kitchens: they have a galley
Boats don't have bathrooms:
They have heads or john's- and it is Very important to learn how to operate them correctly.
Can't wait to follow this journey!
Man! I always find out cool people I have been following were near me far too late! If you ever get to Annapolis again holler!
aaaaah i'm literally checking on your channel if the next episode is already online!!! i can't wait to see the rest of the story!!! It is like reading a book and you can't stop reading. You guys really inspire me. But because i'm still a student, I can't just pack my bags and go. Your channel let me dream of my future and how i'm going to live vanlife with (hopefully than) my boyfriend. I hate it that it sounds so cringy, but you guys are really a lifegoal. How you guys can comfort eachother, how you can't get enough of eachother and be just so in love. I hope that I will find this comment of me (the 20 years-old self) and thinking: wauw girl you don't know what is coming. But like in a good way. Anyways, I send you guys only the best, the joy, the love and a lot of inspiration (for making another e-book?). You are the best. Thanks for letting me taste a little bit of vanlife, boatlife, travelling,... xxx Joke (yes, i know it is a stupid name in English but I'm from Belgium so it doesn't sound like i'm a clown hahaha) okay bye!!!
You're young and strong and if anyone with little to no experience can do this it's probably you guys! As a sailor and former race crew member my initial reaction was that this would be too much for you. I am glad to see that David will be with you, as hands are definitely needed to pull in sails. The wind can be mind bogglingly powerful and boats can go really fast, even when you don't want them to. You're smart and boat safety is easy to learn (sailing terms, right of way, etc.) This will be another thing that you master, I'm sure!
Oh my god I can’t believe you were right in my home! 💛 I hope you looked at boats on the outer banks ☺️
I would recommend to first learn to sail and then buy a boat. Because then you will know what you do en don’t like about boats. Also sailing is nice but you NEED to know what you are doing otherwise there can be some dangerous situations. I am definitely not trying to scare you but please be careful en safe ❤️
Totally agree. Sailing can be violent, scary and dangerous. You need to become a meteorologist and boat mechanic. Being a boat mechanic means that you're a carpenter, plumber, auto mechanic for the engine and transmission, electrician, welder, painter, and a few other trades that you'll find out soon enough. If you can't handle those trades then you'll have to pay for them which...at a marina...costs a lot!! Like the OP I'm not trying to scare you, just telling it as it is. I truly hope you can get the boat of your dreams and do the trip or live the life of your dreams!
Buying a boat sounds daunting but I am sure so did buying a van one day. You'll find right boat for you if you listen to your guts :)
You've been an inspiration for us as we learn to live in a van and we can not wait to follow along your adventures of boat life.
Just curious what Lou is up to these days as although we've never met, we've been missing him in the vlogs :)
As you were listing the specs for what you looked for in a boat, it perfectly described the boat I used to live in which made me quite nostalgic. Then boom, the next boat you viewed was a Hallberg Rassy and what looked to be the same model to the one I used to live in (Rasmus). Fantastic boat! Incredible to sail in. But I would perfectly understand if you went with something a bit more modern. hehe
hope you guys find the perfect boat for your needs!!
Hey I'd love to ask you guys a question that is really important to me these days (as I think about starting a life like yours). How do you deal with missing your family? Do you visit often? I love your channel. All the best to you!
Omg the nf side by side 😂😂
There are owners forums for various boat brands. Its always worth taking to those guys. They'll tell you common issues with the type of boat (e.g Tatyana decking). You can pass that info onto the surveyor. And while a full keel is definitely a blue water feature, other faster hulls can be safer because in passage speed allows you to avoid weather and an extra couple of knots can take days off an ocean passage. Also I learned over the years that clean boats can give you a false sense of confidence. The best boat I ever owned was filthy when I got her but totally sound
'look at all these boats' got my like hahah
I feel it is best to buy a new boat
or have your own built. All the
best for this exciting venture.
On a 40k budget????
I am ready for the boat stickers!
I love a new adventure 😁
I would love it if you would make a video about how you got Lou to the States - normally it takes over a year to get a green card, so hearing your process for all of that would be great! My husband is german and we're planning on doing that in the future, so hearing your experience would be a huge help.
Wow, you guys might have been at the marina I got married at! That is so cool!
I’ve followed several blue water sailors on UA-cam. You may want to talk with them about blue water sailing. Magic Carpet, Gone with the Wynn’s, and Project Atticus. Magic Carpet and project Atticus rebuilt their boats. Gone with the Wynn were brand new sailors and once certified, took off around the world. Good luck
Omg this is making me miss sailing and looking at boats with my parents. AH!
You guys so adorable ❤️ my God bless you more and more!
just subscribed to your patreon this month and i’m still getting a hang of the app i won’t always be able to donate as much as i am now but while i have some extra money i thought i should support my favorite creators! cool to see my name up there and all the BTS on patreon ;) can’t wait for the boat adventure to truly begin!
What is that questions checklist?? Such a good idea! I'm hoping to buy in 6 months, and would love a recommendation on where to find one or build one! Cheers!
Loved the NF reference!
As someone who is really scared of being on any type of boat, I am both worried and excited for you guys 😂 best of luck finding your perfect boat ⛵️ can’t wait for the next episode!
Loved your van build and videos ,please remember that you are the people with the money, You can always walk away, put safety and security at the top of your list, no good having a million dollars in the bank and no lifeboys on the boat ,when it’s sinking .looking forward to your new adventures ,Mike(London),,,,,
I need more now
Well first congratulations Dived, i don't know exactly if you're gonna stay for a while or gonna join, but both ways you will experience a lot of beautiful magnificent adventures "i hope so", and, the question: did they love the boat is the important one, PS: you've got the same laugh you & your brother, of course not the sound well you know what i mean 😅😅, say hi to Lou, bye and good luck.
I don't see the 4th but I really liked the 3rd one. I mean, yeah the inside ceiling is falling off but looks great! (and I have no idea about boats)
Looking forward to seeing what you chose - I'm guessing with such an amount of money, you don't really want to gamble - better safe than sorry?
I have the feeling that it is No 2. Which would be nice because - if I remember right - Ody was No 2, too.
Please tell me you are going to get a proper inspection done on the shortlist to further solidify you make the right choice.
A full kneel is my favourite period
Not going to lie, I feel scared and worried for you because I care about you guys! I know nothing about boats, but I imagine that you need one that is in top shape, if you are planning to cross oceans. I get terrified, thinking about what would happen if you sail to the middle of nowhere, only to find something's wrong with the boat. I hope you're gonna find a good one that won't fail you, and I hope you can start your new journey safely. By now you probably already have your boat and are working on it ;) good luck with everything!
The HR won't let you down, if you want room try looking at a nauticat 33, it's an off shore yacht and has a wheel house, they average 5 to 7+ ktns, but it's the greatest space on any yacht for is size, on rainy days you can be looking out all dry, no cabin fever down below in winter time, 6 berth, 3 doubles, I've lived on board mine for a year now, wouldn't change now, the 80 models are now in your price range
An independent marine inspection can help determine if the boat is sound. Don’t let a dealer hire a boat inspector for you. I’m excited to see your adventure unfold.
love this video!! i just started my own channel with my boat! :)
Can you guys sail or are you learning to sail....the channel sailing la Vagabond have a really good guide book they've written which might be useful it includes buying boats I think...
