For a next slab, you could consider using a designated ruler to skim the entire surface in one go. Also, when the compound settles, you can slightly moisturize the top surface with a sponge and finally skim the slab with either the same ruler (cleaned of course) or a wide skim coat knife. Will save you a lot of time sanding. Cleaning up excess compound is easily done with some full strength white vinegar, which dissolves the gypsum. Leaves a lot less markings than any other method. Further, love the progress on your layout.
To go from all about Burlington northern cascades green and Santa Fe any-color-bonnet diesels from 1960-1995, to 1910-1935 small steam I can say is a modelers shock. When I was younger I’d just buy buildings I liked but never fit my era, and now I sure wish I kept those buildings, wish I would’ve kept older era rolling stock, the only steamer I had was my first ho set the 4-8-4 overland. The biggest issue is just having the funds to convert, especially being in your twenties, had a life changing setback straight out of high school, and with things are nowadays just having what ya need to survive and more to stay ahead is all I have budget for. So watching channels like yours helps as I’m in a very very slow progress on my layout. Projected price estimate to have all of the things I need to complete, and estimate cost of 10 small steamers and 2 first gen diesels is just under 6000$. And that’s budgeting. So kids, before going for a triple decker model empire, start small unless you have the patience haha
I really appreciate you sharing that. I don’t have any of my trains and buildings from when I was younger either. This is a expensive hobby as you say and planning is so important. I hope you can get some of that stuff soon!
Steam locomotives are personally my favorite, the reason is because you can see the moving axels as well as a variety of different whistles depending on the locomotive
Nice progress. As far as the well car you would be surprised how many times a random car ends up hanging around industries they done belong to. Actually would be prototypical to have it empty randomly hanging around different spots on the layout. Car get cut out and set aside for a lot of reasons so don’t be afraid to incorporate that real world stuff into your fun. Keep up the great work and awesome editing.
That’s makes sense. Maybe I might throw it on a track somewhere. I appreciate your take on having that rolling stock on the layout cause realism is something I want to achieve still. Thank you
I like your style sir! Great tip about the Pop Dots vs WS paving tape. I have enjoyed seeing your progress on a layout that is on par with the size of my own. Generally I prefer diesels, but I do have one steam locomotive which is in keeping with the short line that is my inspiration (Santa Maria Valley RR).
Well since you have a modern scenery, with modern buildings and stuff, I would say go with diesel, but there’s nothing wrong with having a steam engine or two… OMG with the joint compound! There is a much easier way, but it’s your layout, do it anyway you like that makes you feel comfortable. I enjoy the updates, power on buddy 😁
My favorites are steam, especially ones from the 1940's & 50's, I like diesels too, but steam is harder to get, since most manufactures have moved to DCC, its really hard to get DCC steam that is good quality, Bachmann holds a monopoly over Athearns lack of physical progress, and BLI is just too expensive. IHC stopped making things about 07' and they are only DC.
Great video TR of the newest progress you've made! I like where you relocated the Grain Mill and think you should add more Silos to what's there. The DQ parking lot turned out great w the joint compound and seems to sand very nicely to smooth it out. I'm a Diesel Fan and have been for quite sometime now. All my locomotives are all Diesels. Thanks again for sharing this series of videos with us along with your time and effort!
I guess that I like North American diesel but English steam. (That is what The Railway Series/Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends will do to you). My favorite diesels is the SD 40-2 or 3 and the GP 38-2 or 3. Those are the locomotives I grew up with when watching the DM&E (now RCP&E) pass by Grandma and Grandpa's house.
So true. I was obsessed with Thomas growing up (thankfully during the real life model seasons) and that is a huge reason why I love steam engines. Appreciate you sharing
My only comment is this, you should pick up a sheet rock trowel so this way you can do your smoothing out of your compound and one sweep and it comes out nice and smooth
I'm building a 11 foot by 7 foot L shaped layout that's 4 foot wide and it's a Western theme. And I'm adding a N scale track for my gold mine and hand building my gold mine carts .
Diesel or steam? That’s like choosing your favorite child! I have a UP9000, Big Boy and Allegheny. The sound the Allegheny makes almost rattles the windows! I’d have to say diesel though. The sound of an F7 cranking up is music to my ears. The look of the Dash 8 and those like it just say “I’m here and I mean business!”
I'd have to say diesel engines for sure, something real cool about them. Of course I love steam too, though. The roar & horn of a diesel never fails to amaze me. Great episode !
I like steam for one reason, a family friend was a conductor for the big boy for a bit and the true power of the big boy is insane, thank you for this series I am making an HO layout as well.
I am going to be building a railroad museum layout which will have a 6 stall roundhouse and locomotives on stall tracks around the turntable. There will be steam locomotives inside the roundhouse and diesel locomotives on the stall tracks. I like your layout it’s coming together well. Keep up the good work!
That sounds amazing! Roundhouses have always been one of the coolest things in railroading history. Makes me wish I had the space to make a layout in that era
@@TopRailroad - I’m going to take my time building and developing it. It’s going to be a long term but fun project If you were close to me I’d help you build your layout
Steam. No contest for me. Now don’t get me wrong, diesel engines are great! While they’re efficient and I enjoy the rumble in my chest they provide, steam will always win my heart over. The raw power, the sound, the smell, the visible engineering, there’s just something about it that wins everytime.
This is coming together so fantastic ... the opening with the BSNF looks so real moving a good slow speed...Whatever you do seems to always be the right thing ..I dont know where you get these ideas and techniques ..man its great.
I grew up with, model and prefer diesels. Nothing like seeing a steam engine in action on occasion, because they are indeed beautiful, but my vote goes to diesel.
Hello, Well I'm really enjoying your videos, I was a little sad after seeing how you built your last layout with the Dairy Queen building and the adding of the road, stop sign and the landscaping. It was time to do a new layout. It was a very nice looking layout, but that is what happens in the model railroading world. You asked which of us would like best either Steam or Disel Locomotives? I'm more interested in Steam Locomotives, There's something about a Locomotives whistle that fascinates me a lot. Just the sound it makes every Steam Locomotive has its own signature sound. Anyway I'm still enjoying your videos please continue with your great work and I hope you don't disappear on us again. Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan

So I like steamers more, but I like modern/80s scenery so I ont have a steam. Will get one for two seasonal boards I’ll eventually make. A fall and winter with steam seems appropriate for some reason.
I would suggest some things. use a small flat piece of timber as a sanding block. The surface of the area you worked on looks terrible. Really bad and full of holes and is uneven. When painting use a small craft paint roller. Discount stores sell them for 2 bucks. Using a brush makes it look patchy and of poor quality.
