    The cost difference provides a YZ owner with numerous options. A Lectron carb, high-end Rekluse, and the rider’s choice of protection (guards, skid plate, etc.) could turn a very good YZ into great for potentially less than the OTD price of the KTM. Not to mention Yamaha’s reputation for superior reliability.

    I went to the shop to buy the Yamaha 125 and the shop Malcom Smith in SoCal had the KTM 125xc on sale making room for the 24 bikes . 125XC is in the garage the front feels harsh on small stuff that is my only gripe. So far it’s the BEST running 2 stroke I have ever been on clean everywhere. And kinda has something down low not all on or off . it’s really nice.

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, the fun factor on the 125's is great. We haven't dared compare the YZ250FX to the 125s cause it probably would win.

  • @OtisFlint
    @OtisFlint Рік тому +3

    The YZ is 15 years behind. They haven't done any serious development since what, 2006? Kick start is an immediate deal breaker, these aren't MX bikes. Kick start is fine in the parking lot, but it's not fine when you're stuck in some gnarly shit (hill climbs, off camber stuff, rock gardens, streams, mud holes, etc).
    Carbs are a giant pain in the ass. TBI runs better, in all conditions, without any BS.
    The overall quality of components on the KTM is a step up also. In my local hare scramble / enduro association, 5x as many KTMs are registered as Yamahas. The more expensive bike outsells the cheap one 5:1 for a reason.

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam  Рік тому +1

      While the YZ is solid and it proves how good 2 strokes can be, I agree. Jetting can suck and no e-start sucks. With that said I still find the YZ125X really really fun to ride.....also for some the much higher price tag isn't worth all the extras.

  • @AmateurRider275
    @AmateurRider275 Рік тому +3

    Great video again! no doubt the KTM is better but the amount dealers charge for KTMs around me is insane, yz125x will go for 8k-9k the 2024 KTM 125XC goes for(I'm not kidding) 11,043$ so that's a huge. jump in price. now i ask myself is the KTM 2000-3000$ better than the Yamaha? i don't think so. so I'd like to receive a KTM as a gift but I will buy a Yamaha

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam  Рік тому

      Yeah thats the burning question....are you willing to pay all that extra hard earned $$$ or not. Is the gap between the bikes really all that big?? While I can give my opinion all day long it really comes down to how you want to spend your money.

  • @MountainStorz

    • @MountainStorz
      @MountainStorz Рік тому +1

      @@dirtbikesaminteresting, I actually called JD today and they said they don't have a specific kit for the YZX yet, and that it's been tough to get it right. The MX kit will obv work but perhaps not ideal for the lower compression head and more lax timing etc.

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam  Рік тому

      @@MountainStorz Yeah, we had to use the old stock needle as the ones provided were too small. We are still working on getting the setup correct. I might just say screw it and get a Lectron or smartcarb. I am no jetting expert but I know enough to change them. Yeah they told me a similar thing when I called them as well. But the guy I talked to seem to be more confident that the kit would work for me. We have elevations from 2000 ft up to 10,000 ft that we ride which makes it tough to beat out fuel injection 2T's.

    Growing up In Southern california.. and with dirtbikes since 7.. desert edition 125... doesn't sound like a good combo.. we do still have a old 86 yz 125.. I gpsd it at 71 mph with 14/48 gearing on pavement.. with me weighing 225. But it's still not that fun in sand lol. Not bad in single track high desert. But.. not so great in open desert.

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam  Рік тому

      While these bikes won't stand up against the bigger bores in the desert we wanted to show case that you can ride these bikes just about anywhere. Most of us mere mortals cannot hold onto 450's and want to give some info for those that are getting started in the sport or not interested in a big bore 2T or 4T.

    In 5 years when your KTM's electronic power valve has been replaced 3 times and is no longer serviceable or available, the fuel pump has crapped out and left you stranded AGAIN, the dead lithium battery costs HOW much... I would take the Yamaha and live with it being a bit old skool unless you just love burning piles of cash and have to have the latest and greatest

    • @OtisFlint

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam  Рік тому +3

      Regardless there is some truth to the fact that way more electronics and bells and whistles can mean more things that could possibly go wrong. Some people really really love the simplicity of 2T's and the YZ125X is exactly that. I can get onboard with people that just want a simple and reliable 2T. With that being said I have had pretty good luck with my KTM TPI bikes and so far zero issues on the TBI. Time will tell though.
