5ply would be a weight 2 yarn so using a 9mm hook would create a more open stitch! If that’s the look you’re going for then I would try it 😊 if not, I would maybe use a 2.75-3mm hook. If you meant a weight 5 yarn (12-14ply) you could absolutely still use a 9mm hook or use a 8mm for a more closed and less open stitch!

could u estimate the amount of yarn this cardigan uses up?
