CROCHET SWEATER TUTORIAL FOR BEGINNERS | how to crochet an oversized pullover sweater EASY! 💫

  • This diy sweater was made to fit loosely around a men's size medium, so if you're aiming for a tighter fit you definitely won't need 5 skeins like I did! This crochet sweater is essentially made up of four rectangles that are sewn together, so I would say that this pattern is beginner friendly!

I have always made my sweaters with my own made-up pattern but it was really cool to see how other people do it. It is so interesting to see how other people hold their yarn and hook, I do it so differently. Many people ask me to teach them and they struggle with how to hold the yarn, I think I may show them this, maybe it will work better for their hands.

    Oversized pullover sweater pattern:
    Ribbed band:
    ch 9
    R1: sc 8
R2-90: front post stitch (8th stitch will be sc)
    Front panel:
R1: place 90 sc along the ribbed band
R2-88: alternate sl st and hdc for entire row
    Neckline:
Count out 10 stitches at the center and place 2 stitch markers
R1: work normally until 2 sts from stitch marker, dec in last 2 sts. Ch 1
R2: dec first 2 sts, work row normally
    R3-8: switch between r1 and r2
R9-16: work normally in stitches alternating sl st and hdc
[repeat on other side just backwards]
    Back panel:
Create 2nd ribbing (same as first)
R1-94: work same pattern as the front panel before decs
    Neckline:
R1-8: work rows of 32 stitches
[repeat on other side of the back panel]
    Cuffs:
    Ch 8
    R1-36: repeat post stitches
Place 36 sc in the ribbed cuff
    Sleeves:
R2: alternate 1 sc and 2 sc in each stitch
R3-80: alternate sl st and hdc for entire row
    [repeat for other sleeve]
Sew all pieces together to form sweater
    Collar:
R1: attach yarn at center back, sc around entire neckline

K, maybe I was a bit too ambitious, starting this sweater as a second ever crochet project) But! I'm pretty crafty, so I figured it out pretty fast (you just need a little patience!)
It's been two weeks and I'm halfway done, did the front panel and one sleeve.
I actually figured out how to do the shoulder part on the front panel, so the pattern doesn't get messed up, I started in the middle and after struggling for a couple of hours I did it!
I also struggled a lot with the first row of single crochets after the ribbing, for some reason it was always one loop too much or one too little haha
It's coming out great and really neat, I'm just a bit worried that it's not going to fit me (I'm an M to XL in dif types of clothes, but I compared the front panel to a sweater that fits me and it's about the same), BUT if everything goes south I'm going to try out blocking, maybe it'll help.
Thank you for the great tutorial! I'm very picky with my style, I don't like a lot of crochet pieces, but I sure as hell like this pattern!

Such a beautiful project, I do have a question regarding the neckline- it looks like you’ve worked some decreases throughout to allow it to lay flat against the neck and collar bones… is this the case, and if so could you perhaps describe how you achieved the specific shape in your collar??
I hope I’m not intruding on your trade secrets, I just struggle with understanding what stitches have been used when I look at finished products… still a student 😉

  • @ajbean1

hello mx erin! i decided to make your oversized sweater pattern as my first crochet project ever (lol how ambitious). however, i wonder why my ribbing has gotten so long (up to 29 inches); so, i wonder if you used cun (chinese inch) in measuring your sizes or just inch in its imperial unit? i’m worried because i never really got to gauge how long this is going to be and i’m currently on my 45th row on my first panel 😩 (a rookie mistake ig). thank you !! :>

This is the best beginner friendly tutorial I have seen on UA-cam. Though while making this sweater what I would do is, add the increase at the bottom after slip stitches on the front and back body so to create a more elastic look just like you did for the sleeves. Thankyou for uploading this!

I love the result ! I'm about to make the sweater but I have one question : on the third row, do we have to do a slip knot on top of a half double crochet, or a slip knot on top of a slip knot ? (and does it make any difference for the pattern ?)

    • @itserinb
      @itserinb  3 роки тому +32

Hi girl!! Yes you have to do a slip knit on top of the HDC! If you place the same stitch on top of itself the pattern will come out very different and it’ll also change the size/rows of the sweater. Start every row with the slip and finish every row with the hdc!!

@@itserinb Should the ribbing for the arms end on an odd number? I had an even number similar to how you did it the tutorial, but adding those increases on the sleeve made an odd number of stitches. So instead of starting each row with a slip stitch and ending with a half double crochet stitch, I had to alternate how I started each row by starting with a slip, then starting the next row with a half double, etc. Great tutorial! Thanks!
