    I really love the trick of constructing sweater out of rectangle. I'm just about to finish the Modern Draped Sweater. I picked slightly smaller size than I wished for so substituted for adding more rows in collar (now it looks like front and back is purposely different pattern, which gives it interest) also added pockets (Which the other tutorial doesn't have) and now I'm here to add different pattern sleeves.
    This tutorial made me addicted to crochetting. This is my second sweater

Also, it will be difficult to complete withour the written pattern which she has posted for free. But if you are a beginner or have trouble reading patterns this may not be for you.

    Ok so I’ve made the sweater with a regular double stitch for 2 rows and a single for 1 because I wanted a warmer less holy sweater. Turned out great. However the batwing style sleeve is a bit restrictive in the range of motion. I dont know if that’s because I made it thicker, or the shape, or both. But It won’t work for me at my job but my friend who has a desk job was more than happy to buy it from me :)

    • @KMayflower
      @KMayflower 5 років тому +6

      Actually it says "beginner friendly" which means if you're a beginner you should be able to work this without much trouble. It's friendly for a beginner, but beginner is definitely a relative term. If you can't do this sweater you need to learn basic stitches and terms and come back to this when you have those down and you will see that this is very easy even for beginners. Remember that this is not a beginner tutorial on how to crochet but rather a video on how to crochet an easier sweater. If you wanted a sweater that was just single stitch all the way through or truly a beginner tutorial, the sweater would not be very interesting... If I can do it, you can do it.

    • @Kayla-rd5jd
      @Kayla-rd5jd 5 років тому

      I’m very much a beginner and I’m currently making this without much trouble. Sure, I may have had to pull out a row or two to start over but if you follow the video and pattern closely and take your time, it’s not as hard as it seems. All you have to do for the body is learn two stitches (other than a double crochet which is fairly well known).

    Just wanted to leave this as a warning for folks thinking of making this. I made the large size using 6 gage (super bulky) lion brand yarn and let me tell ya its waaaaay too big. I'm about 5'7 and 148lbs (so just about average for my age) and i was swimming in this thing. Do yourself a favor and go with the smaller size- especially if you're using bigger yarn than she is. I like oversized clothes but this thing is a damn queen size blanket. It was super fun to make and it honestly looks really nice but just.... Don't make it the same size i did unless you're like 300 lbs.

    As someone who appreciates tutorials and learned how to crochet on YT 12 years ago when there were only a handful doing videos, I'd like to give my opinion for anyone who it may help.
    I made the mistake of believing that using a 5 bulky would work out with 96 stitches (small)
    I had already invested many rows before realizing the gauge was completely off. Not even a little!! FULL 5-8 INCHES.
    The photos of this sweater is a bit deceiving as it drapes really well, yet doesn't let you see how big and bulky the underarms may be.
    I say this bc I believe either the yarn was probably a 6.( or the work was done so loose )
    The 96 stitches I did was way too short, (THE WIDTH (ROWS) therefore the back edge was so short that t wasn't possible to finish it as shown here. It ended up fitting as most shrugs would. (i wasn't looking for that when I chose this video)
    I had hopes that this wasn't just another fold over rectangle sweater shrug, which pulls backwards and just looks like an open garment, sliding backways, but that is just how it turned out.
    The sleeve stitch of forward double crochet didn't work as it has no stretch so although hugely disappointed in this , I decided to do a back loop SC rib to attach separately.
    I would try this with the right gauge and completely loose stitches, perhaps even a much larger hook, just so that the extra bulkiness of the underarm is not as much. I thought the front facing and bottom edge would make this more of a cartIgan. It still will slide back which is the nature of the shrug unless buttoned. I have at least 5 in my closet I don't wear for that reason.
    ***** Please note that the gauge will not work with the #5 bulky yarn and the "N" hook. I also crocheted loosely and was still short 5 inches.
    Perhaps that why the company stopped making that yarn.

    Overall I've enjoyed this project and you do a good job explaining the stitches. I've gotten to working on my collar after finishing the bulk of the sweater but realize as I'm trying it on that it's waaay shorter in length than it looks like in the sample photo. My guess is that I used a smaller hook than I should have. It looks great but definitely will not fit the intended recipient...

    • @makedocrew1717
      @makedocrew1717  5 років тому +2

      Hey! I'm sorry it's fitting shorter than you needed it to. If you have any interest (or patience!) to tear out the collar, you could always add additional rows to the main rectangle to make it longer before you move on to the collar. If you haven't already, it might be helpful to measure your gauge and compare it to the pattern just so you can sort of troubleshoot what went wrong so you know for the future. :)

    i’m using caron big cakes with a 6.5mm hook to make mine so since its a lot smaller yarn i’m guessing i just chain until it measures 44” long for the foundation row, then continue crocheting the pattern to however big i want the square?! i love this pattern, thank you!

    SUPER BEGINNER !! How many square windows should I have in each row if I am making the L/XL size? I know it says it should be the same in every row but I have a bunch of different numbers and I don't know which row is correct to keep following.
    Thanks!

    How is she getting it so long? I've attempted this pattern twice and I'm frustrated with both the written and video pattern because it always lays above my waste but she has in the pictures the sweater flowing down by her thighs. I'm so confused.

      I have the same question! I just finished mine and it’s not nearly as long as the picture. I’m wondering if I can add to it to make it longer?

    • @palacinkasmarmeladou
      @palacinkasmarmeladou 4 роки тому +1

      The way I do it I don't follow the video exactly and add where I need. Like I make the rectangle approx 46 wide and 26 length then sew the sleeves in triangle shape, mark where where the sleeves supposedly end on bottom row and add 'tail' to it (which is continuation of the back side) . I threw it on during tail making to have a ruff idea how long I want it to be. Than proceed with making the collar, again I choose number of rows that I things looks better on me.
      Try to check her other tutorials of similarly constructed sweaters. The one called Modern Draped Sweater has pretty straightforward directions at the beginning, which will make more sense

    Just a heads up. The written pattern says you need 840 yds of size 5 yarn. I ended up using 1100 yds of size 5 and used the size N crochet needle. I'm not a tight crocheter either so I'm not sure why I used that much.

    What an adorable show would love to try to make thank you for sharing was wondering if it would change the pattern any where a lot of the times where you are stating yarn over you pull from the back of the yarn and don't actually yarn over should we follow the way that you crochet this or should we follow your spoken directions?

    (not related to the video at all lol)
    _Please_ read all of this!
    So I'm a beginner crocheter and I've been trying to do the single crochet pattern but I've been having problems so, I thought I'd come here where more advanced crocheters are, in hopes of them helping me.
    So I actually have more than one problem, I hope someone can take time to help me with all of them 🤗
    I'm going to try to explain this as best I can but as a beginner crocheter I might have trouble. So first of all, I can do the starting chain just fine, and I can do the row after the starting chain just fine, but I have a lot of trouble doing the rest of the rows. (Tell me if I'm wrong, but) you're apparently supposed to make a single chain as a turning stitch, then yarn over, then insert the hook into a certain stitch so that there appears to be three loops on the hook, then yarn over and pull the hook through one loop (so that there's apparently supposed to be two loops on the hook), then yarn over again and pull thru so that there is one loop on the hook,and start over again. I'm having all kinds of trouble doing this. I dont know which stitch to insert the hook into, and I usually just guess which stitch. I'm also having trouble doing the first yarn-over; when I finally manage to pull thru the first loop only, and almost always after I do that, I end up with still three loops on the hook instead of two like there's supposed to be.
    If you manage to take the time to read all this (and manage to understand it lol) and perhaps help me with the issues, I appreciate it so very much, thank you 😊😛
