Check out the Mercedes AMG E53 Cheat Sheet here: redriven.com/mercedes-amg-e53
Based on the fifth-generation W213 Mercedes E-Class produced from 2016, the AMG tuned and engineered E43, E53 and E63 variants represent the high-performance examples of Merc's iconic mid to high-range model.
A mid-life facelift in 2021 has seen the AMG W213 models receive updated front and rear fascias while inside, COMAND has been replaced by MBUX with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and revised touch-sensitive controls. Driver-assistance and safety technology was also updated.
While all AMG E-Class models provide superb levels of performance and luxury, just how much power and performance you require is obviously subjective, however, we feel this is the sweet spot in the range.

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.
We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

I was fortunate enough to buy a 2 year old used E53 AMG in the UK three months ago. Came with 2 year warranty. Absolutely love it, no issues so far. Get in it and drive it off, you can feel the torque and it just makes you smile, well, it makes me smile anyway. 🙂
ah man i'm saving up for one now im so excited
@@nblaveragedid you get it?
Just picked up a 2018 E43 AMG with only 20k miles. No regrets!
I’ve had mine since 2019 and done 56,000 trouble free miles, it’s still on original disks and pads! It’s a great car for long European trips. The traction in ice and snow is fantastic with continental winter tyres, it also has the benefit of being able to raise the ride height for driving in deep snow, hard slush and across fields. The comfort is great. Highly recommend.
"This thing makes E63 S feel way to expensive"
Mercedes response :
" let's increase the price of this to closer the gap!"
Am driving this for past 27 months and it is an absolute joy. Located in Singapore, much of the driving is in urban condition with 60% city driving. Fuel consumption I am getting is around between 11-11.5l/100km. To be honest, it surprises many to learn of how good the FC is for an AMG when you compare that with other AMG ranged models.
Power delivery and performance can easily get you in trouble with the authorities. But I always believed that for safety reasons, this power delivery is essential to get you out of dangerous situations.
With the EQ boost cum mild-hybrid generator, with stop/start function switched on, you hardly notice any vibration from the engine like any other car.
The only qualm I have about this car is that tyre changes for the front 2 wheels are between 14,000km-22,000km on average. Learnt this is due to the toe-in configuration coupled with the power delivery from the engine does cause tire wear more than you are used to for any other rides. However, the rear tires last twice that of the front.
I have had issues with the whining sound coming from underneath the car most recently. They have changed the 2 driveshafts (4 wheel drive) and subsequently, the front axle is covered under warranty. But the sound still persists despite leaving it at the dealer's workshop for a month. I am required to send it back to have it ratified yet again within the warranty period which is 3 years or 100,000kms here. In consultation with Germany over my car issue, understood they have not encountered this problem is shown some interest to understand what might be the problem.
Apart from that, felt it is a very reliable engine (straight 6). I would highly recommend this car to anyone who is considering buying one.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time out to write this mate. Superb. - AK
Hello Jackson,
So what was the cause of the whining sound? What was fixed/replaced?
Thank you
@@maksympylypenko7293 , the whining sound apparently is still there even after changing both front and rear axle, 48 volt electrical motor, 2 drive shafts under warranty, so basically the entire drive mechanism. There is really nothing else could be done to eradicate this issue and have to live with it. The sound is somewhat muted now.
All said and done, it is still a really good car for daily driving with much pleasure. I would still recommend to buy it.
How's the wind and road noise? I also have one and I feel the road/wind noise is quite loud.
It’s always good to see the behind the scenes. It’ll make you appreciate the work and effort put into making this informative video. Kudos
Ah thanks mate! - AK

E53 adaptive headlight system issues highlighted! Hi from the UK and thanks for highlighting the adaptive headlight issue that my March 2019 model purchased by me in December 2021 had until last week. A trip to the MB dealer for a reconfigure of system for about 2 hours seems to have sorted. I watched several reviews prior to purchase but you guys were the only ones to highlight the adaptive headlight inherrent fault. Well done!
Hello David, how has your car been so far? Any other issues besides headlights? Looking to buy a slightly used one, and would like not to get into a money trap :) thank you!
The concept of the channel is amazing! Videos are to the point and quite enjoyable 👍🏼
Ah thanks so much mate. - AK
Having owned one of these in the UK for 3 years and 19k miles, I can confirm that it’s an excellent everyday car. The 3-litre straight six engine is creamy and strong and the car feels solid as a rock. Mpg not bad either. On long runs I get up to 38 mpg and overall I’ve averaged 29.1 mpg. I usually change my car every 2 or 3 years but I’m going to keep this one and run it until the day comes when I’m ready to go electric. Not yet.
Does UK one come with sport bucket seats?
19k miles in 3 years? Sounds like you don’t drive it often

@@ReDriven I'll take what I can get! Will look forward to it. You could borrow mine if you were in Melbs (and not both in lockdown)!
I think you actually might be wrong about the exhaust sound being piped through the sound system. From my (admittedly brief research) the true quad exhaust 43 and 53 models are just that. A true quad exhaust. My 2021 GLC 43 does not artificially enhance the exhaust note through the sound system so I am hoping that is the case with this model.
Yes. "The seat" lol

good on ya mate thanks for the review……..I had same thoughts .. never buy new one….
Can you please review C43 AMG as well…

I have a 2016 facelift C250 and the quality that MB exercises even at the entry level is insane. Mercedes benz is the only brand I trust to drive.
I can see you in that car. And not because I just saw you in it. I just drove my friends 2012 S550 with 150k miles and I was impressed at how tight everything still was.

Got the final allocations for 2023 E53 in Canada. 😢 retiring model soon, good I6 engine but hope the tech has no issues in 5years as the car is awesome. It’s no twin turbo B58 bmw engine, but the interior is unrivalled.
This segment from Redriven is spot on. A new owner could have spent $270k for one of these and the depreciation is frightening. This car will be worth $35k in not too long dropping to $20k as the KM's are racked up. And the main reason for this is the cost of ownership outside of warranty is scary. And things go wrong that ridiculously expensive to fix. If you are DIY mechanic with patience and shop for parts overseas these cars can be kept on the road as the AMG engines are bulletproof, it's everything they hang off them that sometimes aren't. European cars in general can be expensive outside of warranty some worse than others.
Thanks so much Dean. - AK
$35K??? No chance that's happening in Australia, so you must be in the US....
@@heltunikt well, I’m currently seeing one for sale in Aus for $80,000. Won’t be long till they’re $60,000 I’d say another year or two, since warranty will be finished and kilometres are around or above 100,000k’s. Not yet $35,000 but a hell of a lot less than MSRP for not that long ago.
Would like to see a video on used C class - C250 C200. The more affordable range.

Hey Adam, another get review! I have a feeling you prefer this e class just a bid more than the 3 year older S class…lol! So know you see that S class was not looked after as well as mine, or this e class. Fred
Cheers Fred! LOVED this E Class but honestly, I LOVED the S Class as well. It's amazing that the two cars have aged so incredibly differently.
The S Class we featured is actually owned by one of my best mates Dads and I've been involved with it from the day he collected it from the dealership. I can categorically say that it has been thoroughly looked after but unfortunately, just has a few gremlins.
However, we feel this is to be expected when these cars are so complex. Every brand will have an example of a car that doesn't quite meet what's expected of it and we just felt with the S Class, it was important that we showed that even the best cars can have their issues. - AK
I've been researching the E53 and Lexus GSF... I think this is fun for now but the GSF is fun for the future.
Thanks for the review!!!
Thanks for enjoying it Timothy. - AK
Great car
Are you able to do one on the m550i?
Having owned one for a year before I went back to bmw, I can say I wouldn't have another to be honest. I can't fault the design, I absolutely loved the interior and exterior.
Faults, this is where I had issues. For the money they charge for it, I was disappointed. I had suspension issues, specifically top strut mounts. Sos system faults and the worst was the digital cockpit. It just randomly goes dark, apparently an overheating graphics chip is the problem. They say "just switch the car off for 40 minutes and it's fine. It isn't fine for money it costs.
They didn't ever repair it even after they changed the screen, the fault just came back.
What bmw did you go to next
@@jayzr8938 got a 2020 550i after that.

One of these in wagon/estate form would be the dog's bollocks. M3 touring as well. Love a good euro hot wagon.
This is probably the newest car featured on ReDriven so far?
I do wonder if we could say how durable the interior is, as it is so new. Same for any mechanical gremlins.
Edit: I posted too soon. You did mention that limitation at the end of the video.
It just snuck in to our "needs to be more than 3 years old" rule mate. - AK
Hey, I owned one for a year and put 25k hard miles on it without issues. The main gripe was that on the right hand drive models if you fit certain brand tyres you get this crazy rubbing at low speed. Sounds like the tie rod ends about to rip off, but it's just the tyre running on the inner guard.
I’d love to see a review of the 76 series landcruiser
It’s on the cards soon Brad. We’re just locking in a filming date. - AK
I'd welcome your review of the M550i as that, to me, would be the easy choice for similar or even less money, and you get that stunning twin turbo V8.

I recently did a 1000km roadtrip in Germany in one of these. It's a brilliant car for long hauls. The autopilot works great and makes it super relaxing to drive. On the other hand, put it into Sport Mode and it becomes alert and fun to drive, despite the massive weight. My only criticism would be that there's too much going on on the big screens and operating all the sub menu's while driving takes your eyes a bit off the road. I find BMW's iDrive quite a bit more intuitive. And I found the economy a bit disappointing, considered the Hybrid power train: Yes, you CAN drive it with 7-8l/100km (10-11l/100km on the German Autobahn). However, a BMW 540i will easily match those numbers without having an expensive and complicated hybrid power train.
Oh, and I feel sorry for you Aussies. You can really get one of these used in Europe for €50-55k.
We can thank our stupid luxury car tax for the price.
Also, thanks so much for watching and or the excellent comment, we really appreciate it. - AK

How can you say we should be an E53 AMG and you advise against buying an S Class because it has to much tech which will cause reliability issues and high maintenance cost? These cars have the same amount of tech. Are you being consistent?
Hi Pieter, thanks so much for watching and commenting.

I guess Merc has gotten it’s crap together in the last few years when it comes to build quality. I know it’s got very low kms on it but still is nowhere near as shitty as the s class Adam reviewed before in terms of its build quality and leather quality. I guess this E represents the “best” in “best or nothing” while that S was the “nothing”. Also am I too much of a nerd for noticing that dark interior shot is of an s class instead of an E? You can tell from the central analog clock that’s lit and the slightly different central console design

In New Zealand where I live we try todo
Motor oil every 10,000-15,000 kms
Transmission oil every 50,000 kms
Diff oil every 50,000 - 75,000 kms
Brake fluid every 50,000 kms
Water cooling gets flushed every 50,000 to 75,000 as well. With all plastics in a modern engine make sure oil is correct per hand book for car and use distilled water when required
it’s kms not miles
dont buy this thing if its older then 3 years. this review is bought. the interior quality is bad as hell (doors a are cracking when you pull it, the middle console cracks too). the command system is way to slow for the build year ( takes 2 mins to take control over the usb stick when you want to switch mp3s). the system itself is overcompilcated with under folders. even the old w204 was faster. engine is good. gearbox is a gamble (some say its a little harsh on the shift some dont have anything). and better not have any electrical issues ( the display only relplacement cost is about 2k € in germany without working). this thing drinks more gas then anything else (min 12l / 100km on eco in the city). you have the air drive system automatically spec in this car, this means when it dies it cost you 2k+€ for 2 replacements on the the mb dealer. i drive the same 2019 model, would i buy it again? definetly no the interior quality is just to bad for the price tag.
Hey mate, firstly thanks for commenting, we really do appreciate it.
Secondly, you’ve clearly had a different experience with your car compared to ours and that’s always to be expected. We never claim that there aren’t perfect examples and completely crap examples of the cars we review. Used cars differ immensely, that’s always going to be the case.
We’re merely creating a place where people can come together and talk about their experiences to hopefully help people in their decisions.
Our viewpoint is no more important than anyone else’s, and we say that in the video. You guys (the owners) are the experts, at the end of the day you know best.
In exchange for (hopefully) giving you all an open forum to discuss cars, we do ask that you don’t undermine our efforts by claiming our reviews are ‘bought’. Paid for by who exactly? And how much? The current team of 3 who keep things going have to date made exactly $0 profit from the 12+ months we’ve dedicated a full time job’s worth of time into (meanwhile working an actual full-time job) to keep food on the table.
Again, we truly appreciate your input, but please don’t undermine our efforts.
