Stunning build on this aircraft. I will be picking this one up and using your video as a reference. My Uncle was a door gunner on the B24 in the Pacific back in WWII. Great job on this one.
I ,as a sheetmetal fabricator, was watching a doco on the manufacturing and assembly of early model B24's during the early years of WW2 on UA-cam, 6 or so months ago. It was very, very interesting. Watching the way each individual part of the aircraft was formed.
I just went surfing on you tube....my father was the Tail gunner on Strange Cargo when they were shot down. The photo at the end is of the Crew that was flying this B-24 when they were shot down over the Brenner Pass in Italy. It was April 8 1945. They were able to make a crash landing in Dubendorf, Switzerland and were interned there for the final six weeks of World War II. My father is the 5th one from the left on the second row. First row Left to right--Lt. Earl Hill Bombardier, Lt. Richard Turk Pilot, Lt. Vincent Hanrahan Co-Pilot, Lt. Paul McEnroe Navigator. Back row Lawton Kizer Gunner, Frank Kovacs gunner and was wounded, Otto Siemer, next is unknown, my Father , and unknown. All of the tail numbers and coloration are correct. They were in the 15th Air Force, 450th BG, 721 Sqd and were stationed in Manduria, Italy. It was this crews 13th mission. Always proud of these men....my father was the last one to pass away at age 93....and he was the oldest one in this group of young eagles.
That's awesome, I'm glad you were able to find this video. It's not a coincidence that I picked this specific plane because my grandfather was also on it and is in the picture at the end as well (Lawton). Its a fascinating story of their final mission and amazing they were able to make it to Switzerland. Thank you for confirming the markings, numbers, and colors are correct. I spent a lot of time looking at grainy black/white photos to make it as accurate as possible.
Yep and it was a lot of fun. Even though it was 1/72, its still larger than the 1/48 fighters Ive built so that made some of the photo etch parts more manageable
This is awesome. I have two (1/48 and a 1/72 scale) B-24 kits and I was going to make them into the plane my grandfather was a tail gunner on. Thanks for the added inspiration!
@@ScaleModelAssassin I don’t have space for either of them but I’m going to make room haha. I’m going to give my dad one of them. I’m in the process of doing the waterslides in illustrator. The two photos of the nose art aren’t the best but I’ll work with them. I have all the call letters and all that info already too. Just need to make the decals for those too.
Thank you and wow that's really awesome on your part! My grandfather flew on this particular plane in the 721st squadron. I've found a lot of cool info on the 450th homepage/website.
Nicely done, I just bought the kit with bigsin, biged, gun barrels, landing gear with front cockpit set ..hopefully could built it like you did.. I did notice someone in the web mention the kit has 3 to 4 parts not correct to the actual bomber of cocktail hour. Atleast it not as bad as the 1/32 version in terms of wing profile out of shape.
Thanks! It was a lot of fun. Im a bit sad that so much of the bomb bay & cockpit are hidden in the final assembly. I guess thats typical for a lot of builds though.
Just beautiful! Have one dumb question; If you were to sell a model that you just built, ( like this one); with all the extras...Would you commonly sell it or not at all...(and for how much if you did?). I'm building MPC "Profile Series" B-29 Superfortress 1/72 at the moment, and there is somebody very interested in buying it..(But if you were to add the purchase of the model and all the materials plus the time invested...suddenly, this model I feel it is invaluable! or priceless to sell..I do not normally sell my models, and for sure I wouldn't want to sell this one .) Even though, that B-24 of yours, Is way beyond in quality, value and time invested than mine..I can imagine the tag price on it! ( sorry for the love letter; I'm an old guy..) Any thoughts on this? I love your channel very much and you are a fine artist!! Thanks much!
Thank you and its good to hear you enjoy my channel! Not a dumb question either. I havent sold one mainly because Im nervous that it would be damaged in shipping and also because no one has asked. For that reason I cant give you an actual number but I wouldnt sell for less than the materials cost. Ive given a few to family at just the material cost and of course friends would be discounted on labor. Id charge materials up front, give a labor estimate, and then charge that once I have the actual number of hours worked. Just figure out how much your time is worth, use minimum wage as a benchmark, and estimate how many hours it would take to build. Ive internally debated my hourly rate and still dont know what it would be lol. In your case, you could build 2 simultaneously so that you can keep one.
I know, the number '5' for instance is different, but I know you have the software to make adjustments. This font is very useful, though. It comes close to, or is even spot on, to what we see on American airplanes, today. You will notice, as you build more and more models, that when you check reference photos, that many numbers (on the real aircraft) are often masked and painted by hand. Unfortunately, for us modelers, there is no "absolute standard", or a 100% accurate font. Sad, but we'll just have to live with it.
Yep, I was getting the feeling these were hand painted on the actual aircraft. There were plenty of slight variations between the various B-25's I was looking at.
I'm defiantly impressed, you hit this one out of park! I'm really interested in those after market main wheel bays. I've got an old Matchbox Privateer that I've put off building it because I couldn't find a solution for those wretched wheel bays. What brand are they and where did you get them from?
Thanks! The wheel bays came as part of a larger set of photo etch parts. It was an exterior details set made by Eduard (#72492). Maybe youll be able to find the Privateer wheel bays as part of a larger set. Eduard has discontinued this set that I bought but I was able to find it on eBay a few months ago.
I have to give it to you.... NIce build.... But why the choice of Tamiya's substandard, thick and grainy NMF finishes when there are so much better alternatives out there ?
Thanks and when I built this one I wasn't as familiar with some of the alternative options like alclad. I've branched out with some of my paints and agree there's some smoother finishes.
I used Tamiya. I would actually recommend a different brand / type of paint for the natural metal finish though. I built this a while ago and recently have switched to Alclad.
So all total you invested what, about $200 for this? Question: Have you ever used Tamiya putty and if so how does it compare to the Vallejo putty you used here?
Pretty close, it ended up costing a little over $200. I recently bought a tube of Tamiya putty, but I havent had the opportunity to use it yet. Vallejo works really well for the small gaps and Im hoping that Tamiya will work a little better on some of the medium sized gaps.
Sorry just saw your compressor question. Im using a basic cheap compressor that came with this all-in-1 kit from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010TQCOEE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Ive upgraded the airbrushes but I think the inexpensive compressor works fine

Stunning build on this aircraft. I will be picking this one up and using your video as a reference. My Uncle was a door gunner on the B24 in the Pacific back in WWII. Great job on this one.
Thanks! It's always fun to hear about the people who were actually flying these planes
Awesome build! the crew of that plane would be proud of you! 👍✈️🇳🇿
Even for a 1/72 scale model, this bird is immense. Great work!
Thanks! It felt more like a 1/48 build since it is so large
I ,as a sheetmetal fabricator, was watching a doco on the manufacturing and assembly of early model B24's during the early years of WW2 on UA-cam, 6 or so months ago. It was very, very interesting. Watching the way each individual part of the aircraft was formed.
Yea sounds like it be pretty neat to see these things being made
Bro your probably the best revell model kit builder
😮😮

Amazing stories guys and a brilliant tribute to their and all their fellow flyers courage. I'm speechless and a little glassy eyed.
Excellent work! You poured in plenty of extra effort and the end result makes this 24 a stand out. Congrats!
Thanks! I was very pleased with the final result
An absolutely amazing paint & detailing especially in the cockpit & on the tail & nose art. Thanks for sharing,SMA. Great job.
Thanks! Glad you like the build
That’s a crazy amount of detail for a 1/72 kit :D
Yep and it was a lot of fun. Even though it was 1/72, its still larger than the 1/48 fighters Ive built so that made some of the photo etch parts more manageable
Printing your own decals, that's next level modelling, great build.
Thanks! I was pleased with how well they turned out with just my basic inkjet printer.
Perhaps you could do a short vid on how to do it one day : )
Glad you mentioned that. I was already thinking of doing a tutorial with this footage. Good to know theres some interest.
This is awesome. I have two (1/48 and a 1/72 scale) B-24 kits and I was going to make them into the plane my grandfather was a tail gunner on. Thanks for the added inspiration!
very cool! My grandfather was a nose gunner on a B-24. Wish I had the space for a 1/48 on my shelf

Insane detail. Almost looks like you can start it up.
Thank you! It took many hours to get it looking correct.
Very nice attention to detail.
Thank you very much!
I flew 25 missions with the 450th B.G (720th. Sqd.) will buy kit. Great job!

Scale Model Assassin
It is a great web site. I was surprised to see 450 on tail.I was top turret. I was 18
Scale Model Assassin im just wondering what you do with the plains when your done with them ? Do you build for other peope or just yourself ?
I've only built 1 for somebody else. The rest are sitting in my house on top of any flat surface I can find...I need better display options
What a great model. I’m definitely going to buy this one
Cool, I really liked the kit
Beautiful work!

thats some strong cement!
Excellent work all that research paid of
Thanks!
Another great build. Would luv to see you do a ME-262.
Thanks! Ill take a look at it
Added to my must have list. Great work
Aside from the repetitiveness of the bombs it was a fun build lol
Man, you are the magician of masking! :-O
Thanks! They were tricky to position and make the numbers look good. Lots of time/patience was required
The result clearly talk by himself!
Amazing work
Thank you very much!
Wow my respect to you all those details job well done........!!!
Thank you!!
Outstanding job

Scale Model Assassin yes. But you know what they say: as long as you know it’s there, that’s what matters.
Wow its amazing
Thanks!
😍 Stunning build.

Did I hear the music from red tails from the p-51 take off scene?
Oooh maybe. I haven't seen that so I'm not sure
Oh! Handmade decal !
Yep yep!
7:22 .. The font you need is called ' Amarillo USAF ' .
I downloaded that font and it was the closest match out of everything I looked at, but still wasnt 100% accurate compared to my reference photos.
I know, the number '5' for instance is different, but I know you have the software to make adjustments.
This font is very useful, though. It comes close to, or is even spot on, to what we see on American airplanes, today.

That was a big old seam at 3:30
Yea thank goodness for putty
I was wondering why Hasegawa decided to make the nose transparant. So you could leave it like that and show the interior ?
Ive wondered that too. Either so you can see the inside or different variants have different window positions so they made it so 1 part can fit all.
Very nice myfriend
Thanks!
Очень здорово
Это же ювелирная работа
Спасибо. мне сложно говорить по-русски, но я попробую
Please tell me which putty have you used, please, thanks
I used Vallejo putty
are you uing AV colors? Can you let me know which one you used for painting the ship body?
I used Tamiya. I would actually recommend a different brand / type of paint for the natural metal finish though. I built this a while ago and recently have switched to Alclad.
Is it me or does your paint spray make the paint clump into droplets?
Is there a particular color youre seeing this on?
how many time you let tamiya panel line before you clean with testors thinner?
Around 5 minutes. I don't let it dry for very long
So all total you invested what, about $200 for this?

how was the fit of the kit? Thanks
I don't recall any major issues with the fit. It was good enough to where I'd buy it again
Recommend for beginners?
If you leave out the photo etch I think its a doable kit for a beginner.
Which airbrush do you use?
I use an Iwata HP-CS (0.35mm). I also recently bought a Badger Sotar 20/20 (0.2mm) for small details on future models.
Ok. Thanks for your quick answer. And which kompressor?
Sorry just saw your compressor question. Im using a basic cheap compressor that came with this all-in-1 kit from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010TQCOEE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Ive upgraded the airbrushes but I think the inexpensive compressor works fine
No problem. And thank you for your answer.
Serious lack of burnt umber.
Lk164, estupendo.
Gracias!!!

@@ScaleModelAssassin well i just wanted to let you know what they called it back then
Hmm...now play World War II
lol I do have enough planes now

chill chill lol. I knew someone would eventually ask this. I agree its not the best tool for drawing but I already had the software and I didnt have to buy/learn anything new. What illustration program would you recommend (prefer a free one).
Not much of a kit if you have to provide your own counterweights. Seems like the model company is ripping you off.
The nose art looks like a guy
lol. Either way I think Its historically accurate
