He was saying that people who get us in wars are never the ones who fight them neither are their sons. The ones who get to stay home are the fortunate sons. This was written when a lot of guys were drafted and the upper crust had all sorts of exclusions to get out of the draft. Also it was common to be forced to volunteer for the army or marines if you got in front of the wrong judge with the wrong charges. I got my draft notice my first week in basic training. Most CCR is antiwar and privilege. She got it right.

My first boss stole a cop car when he was 17 and drove it off a cliff. The judge gave him the option of jail or Vietnam, his parents made him choose going to war so he wouldn’t have a record like that. He went into the Air Force and ended being captured as a POW. He was one of my favorite people in this world, Rest Easy Murphy.

74 years old, two years in Viet Nam and I still listen to this song all of the time. One of the 1st and best anti-war songs ever during the Viet Nam war. you can hear the bitterness over the inequity between rich and poor, those with and without.. John Fogarty (the lead singer back then) still sings of those same conditions.

I was 23 24. Moved to SF from chicago. After a Saturday night driving a airport shuttle we went up the hill to a local bar. Potrero Hill. There was a guy in 50s. Dressed sharp and he just saw me and introduced himself. He had me pegged. Your a irish kid from the Midwest. Chicago he said Shawn Patrick was impressed and he said. 'I bet your a Notre dame fan'. Yes I said. He then goes into a anti motre dame rant. He then said I am impressed you didn't reacte in anyway. He was a irish catholic guy who played football at USC in the 50s. This guy was 6 ft 210lbs and could have kicked my ass. So we sat and shot the s hi t for 30 minutes. He then told me about his joining Marines and ended up in Korea at 19. He just stopped at 1 point and became very emotional. Grabbed my forearm and told q me that i reminded him of guy he served with. This guy was telling me that he was a tough guy and he could kick anyone's ass. Then we were shelled for 1 hour. I was terrified calling for my mother shit my pants and nobody teased him after. The all had done it. He explained to me that the Vietnam War was wrong and it was made worse by not keeping troops together after they all trained together.. . At times guys were put out to the wolves. He was angry that those in Vietnam were just fodder.
Vietnam is one word. Anyone who was really there would know that

@@carolem.9009 Yes, I saw John Fogerty sing exactly those words in a performance he did for Howard Stern's birthday here on UA-cam. I laughed and laughed! You should be able to find it if you want to. Fogerty wrote the song because he thought we were on the edge of utter destruction during the Vietnam war.

I'm a disabled veteran, and this is one of my favorite songs to sing at karaoke. BTW, this song is used in an insane number of movies about the Vietnam War era. Creedence Clearwater Revival did a few protest songs, but their content ran the gamut of everything you would expect from a pop band of the late 60s to early 70s.
This was a anti Vietnam War song . CCR had so many hits on a variety of subjects. Fogarty had an unusual great voice.

There had been folk songs against the Vietnam war, but this was the first major pop rock song against it and it opened the floodgates. Great band, great people.
It's "I ain't no fortunate one". Not war dog. This song was added by the Library of Congress to the National Recording Registry, for its cultural significance. CCR's songs sometimes had deep themes, but they were written to be general enough that they are open to interpretation, rather than an exact one-to-one correspondence with a particular political issue of the day, which is why they are so timeless.

The rich, and upper middle class, could afford to send their sons to college. There was an exemption or postponement to the draft for collage students. If they could get married and have a child before graduation, they didn't have to worry. There was also an exemption for young fathers. This was also why divorce became much more common. The last young men to be sent draft notices were in my graduating class of high school, 1969. So the 70's started with a lot of divorces, their marriages were not based on love, but lust in disguise. And a desire to avoid the draft.
"I ain't no fortunate one naw naw." But war dog is a good interpretation of his meaning. Three of my 4 brothers were in Vietnam. The 4th was deaf. This is the music of my childhood. This song had been on a lot of sound tracks. You DEF should check out Have You Ever Seen the Rain.

Ya'll nailed it, it's about the draft! If you were in college it kept you out of the draft. It was not easy to go to college back then. So if your family was poor that meant you had a good chance to be drafted. Loved the video! ROCK ON!!
It was WAY easier to go to college back then. You could pay for tuition with a summer job, now you're in debt into middle or old age.

we were poor as dirt yet my twin brother went to college and never got drafted. Although my eldest brother enlisted and was there for a year.

This song is still relevant in so many ways. Nothing has changed for those of us who are not fortunate sons.

In the 60's young kids were getting drafted and going straight to Vietnam to die in high numbers. It was terrifying for lots of families. My brother had a secret plan to leave for Canada (never to return) rather than die young. The war protests were huge, and in the SF Bay Area, where CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival) is from, they played this kind of protest music. Such a terrific song, with such a strong message, delivered by John Fogerty's unforgettable vocal.
He served in the Army Reserves and never saw combat. I saw his message. He should have gone ROTC that's "Run off to Canada".
Cheech Marin went to Canada during Vietnam and that's how he met Tommy Chong.
CCR did make their way to the Bay area and Los Angels in the early 60's, but most of the members grew up in Louisiana, New Orleans, just a fun fact.

My Husband was "escorted" to Vietnam in hand cuffs, because he was against it, He went AWOL 5 times before they got him, and forced him to go! He didn't even finish his training. He was 18 with a wife and a baby! My Husband is dead because of it, (took decades of suffering), while the rich and elite escaped it! That is what this this song is about, it is about being forced to give up YOUR LIFE for political reasons, and has no bearing on America! It was a Civil War! We didn't belong there! And trust me, the anger is just as real today among our vets! Songs like this was their voices!
Yes, an anti-war song but also questioning the motives of the rich. John Fogarty is fire, & a great song-writer.

YUP! BOTH my brothers got their draft numbers and were waiting for the call. They protested and my parents let me go sometimes with them also even though I was younger.... ESPECIALLY if they knew it was gonna be a bigger protest. Their reasoning was twofold. They wanted me to go to understand the reasons behind the protests. They also knew the odds of the cops dragging my brothers into custody along with an 8 YR OLD were skin to none. So they knew WE'D ALL come home from those REALLY big ones even if they got intense with the cops. They were stacking the deck by placing the odds on me as their Ace up their sleeve. 😏 Our Dad was 3rd generation military and he believed in the right for us to protest for what we believe in. He was a WW 2 Army Air Corps MILITARY POLICEMAN! Yeah...and HE was like ho out there and do your thing and of you get busted well get you out in the am. He always spending a night in jail is part of the deal and he was NOT getting outta bed in the middle of the night to bail anyone out. He said you'll sit BUT you won't sit and rot in there. So just such it up and hang tight cuz THIS is always a potential of being a part of THAT and you all knew it going in. IF you're not ready to get arrested for your cause then don't protest cuz "you AIN'T down enough for it yet" and sit it out. He was a tough dude, brought up in NYC and used to street fights and beat downs from the cops long before he ever joined the Army. He had lumps on his head from where he's been hit with less pipes as a teenager in a fight. He said it builds character to stand up, but if you sit it out~you can't sit idle either. You STILL have to find something to do for your cause I'm another way if you can't find it in your heart to be out there in the streets for whatever reason. He said it's not a shame to sit it out but it's a personal choice and there's still movers to be made.
@@christinegelabert1651 I remember sitting in front of the TV, my older brother this was his draft year, his number never got called, the next year was my 2nd oldest brother draft time and his number never got called. We did have 2 neighborhood boys got called and within 3 months, 1 died and a few weeks later the other died. So sad when they came home.
I also went with 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters to protest, several times. My Mom would come sometimes. my Dad was a vet from the Korean War, he didn’t talk about it, he just didn’t want his boys going to Vietnam weather it’s was draft or enlist. Man that was some crazy times, this was 71 and 72, I was 6. I was with my older siblings again in the late 70’s and early 80’s it was all Greenpeace. I did go out to few rallies after George Floyd, they were smaller but we stood together along with our police chief.
The guy on our far right is the singer, John Fogerty!! He didn't say war dog, but this was written in the middle of the Vietnam War!! This is in every Vietnam War movie ever made!! Another good one in almost every VW movie is Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower!

I grew up in this generation...it's hard to put your finger on it. It was not part of going or not going to war...politcal issues were so greatly and deeply affected by many groups. Life was played out on the T.V....no other generation had ever watched a war played out in front of our face...on T.V. every night. I shaped our world from there on in. Your parents might remember? I remember going to see Milly Hatchet and 38 Special at the Fox theater in Atlanta. I think it was 1978-79. I know there was a really bad ice storm coming but we still went.

Oh man parents were outraged with this song!!! So many served in WW2 and they believed any that didn’t back the Viet Nam war they were unpatriotic!!! Usually had to turn it off when parents walked into room!!! Times have changed, right???
My Dad survived Vietnam, but was never the same when he came back. I'm honored and proud of him though, many ran and dodged. Men died and men came home, others never went. Shout out to all the women who died serving too.

My father was drafted, fortunately for him, he was sent straight to another part of the orient. My Uncle that just passed was not so fortunate. He got drafted and was a Marine helicopter machine gunner. Saw a lot and never spoke about the war, ever and we knew better not to ask.

Fellow military brats, older person here but spent the first 15 years following my dad around the globe. Have listed to you a few times but first time with you both. Liked the vibe so subscribed. May I make a tiny suggestion? You would enjoy the music more with headphones or ear buds and so would we. There are subtle things being missed that headphones would help pick up. Your talk of your fathers having a choice of going into the military reminded me of another new band/song recommendation.
Band name: The Guess Who
Recommend song: “American Woman”
That band is from Canada and the song was written after the band was stopped at the U.S. border during the time of the Vietnam war and the U.S. border authorities tried to coerce the band members into joining the U.S. military in exchange for entrance into the country. It’s a very cool song that became a hit in the U.S. without the radio dj’s or American listeners knowing what the true meaning of the song was.
There is a long version and a short version of this song. I recommend the long version (it’s only about 1 minute longer than the short version).
CCR songs have been in over NINETY movies and TV shows. You've probably heard more than a few !

John Fogerty WAS Creedence Clearwater Revival. One of the greatest American songwriters we've ever produced. He also wrote "Heard it through the Grapevine", and "Proud Mary", made hits by other artists.
The opening notes for this are SO iconic, and the song was in Every Vietnam War Movie Ever, so it's a little hard to believe you never heard it before. But, that may also be me, sitting here at 50 years old, and projecting what I assume "everyone must have seen this", and well, maybe that was true for Gen-X.... and.... maybe not true for people 25-30 years younger. But man, you have a LIBRARY of gems in CCR's collection. Maybe not all of them will speak to you, but you'll love many of them.

You should use headphones when listening to the songs you miss a lot without them. He never said wardog he said one. Headphones or earbuds would truly help.

This was played a lot during the Vietnam War as a protest song, because if you had money or connections you weren't going to Vietnam. It's been played in movies, Forest Gump, Suicide Squad to name more recent movies.
Fogerty has a GREAT Rock Tenor edgy voice. Once you hear it, you know it's him.

CCR defines my adolescent years. I played their songs in garage bands in the early 70's. They were inspiration and guidance. "I'm ain't no fortunate ones".

CCR is amazing! I know you have reacted to one or two more of their songs, but you really need to do "Up Around the Bend" (has one of my favorite guitar riffs of all time), "Bad Moon Rising," "Looking Out My Back Door," and "Long as I Can See the Light" (my favorite song by Creedence Clearwater Revival). I have to note that I'm very impressed about how you nailed the meaning of the song! In the first verse, he's talking about "I ain't no senators son," then the second goes on to talking about how "some folks are born silver spoon in hand," alluding to how the children of the affluent like the wealthy and politicians weren't subject to the draft, while the rest of the population was being forced into the military and sent off to Vietnam. "Fortunate Son" was one of the big "Protest Rock" songs up there with Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" or Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" (both of which I would love to see you react to). Also, in case you're interested, the singer of CCR is John Fogerty; I've always thought he has a very distinct voice that sounds amazing with almost everything he sings!

For the Vets, " FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH " "GONE AWAY " or " WRONG SIDE OF HEAVEN" I beleive all the band are vetrans, great songs really make you think. Great video, really enjoyed it. I seen John Fogerty in Calgary at the Stampede a couple of years ago he was great.
CCR is one of my most favorite bands. "Born on the Bayou", "Lookin' Out My Back Door", and "Run Through The Jungle" are a few more good songs but you really can"t go wrong with anything from them
Out of a zillion hits by them, I'm partial to Sweet Hitchhiker. The closest to hard driven rock they do. Love these guys. Heard it thru the grapevine is a treasure also.

Love this band, such great antiwar music, southern rock/blues.
Take the time to listen to their music. They have been singing since the 60's. Struggles throught, but still had have strong supporters. This is a band to be reckoned with, especially now with Russia and Ukraine. And the potential for greater issues.

Vietnam war protest song. Almost all of the top Bands and artists, including "Motown" had at least one war song. This particular song by CCR, was also singing about how it was the poor class, both Black and white, and Hispanic, that was drafted to go to the Jungles of southeast Asia to fight. If you had connections, or were in college, you were less likely to have your draft number come up in the lottery. Like maybe the son of a senator, or politician who could pull some strings, to have their son not have to go fight... See what this song is about now? They were called "Fortunate Sons" because they had a way to escape going to Vietnam to fight that war.
CCR was one of the greatest band of the Vietnam War/Woodstock era. Love their rock/bluegrass style. Up around the bend, and green river were my favorite songs.
This band and it's leader John Fogerty, were my first rock heroes. I was 6 years old when they hit the radio hard and heavy in 1969. Love John's buzzsaw voice to this very day.

Credence Clearwater Revival, also known as as CCR, was a band from El Cerrito, CA. They became Southern Rock legends and they created an Anti-Vietnam War anthem called Fortunate Son. The bad was formed in 1959 and disbanded in 1972. Lead singer, lead guitarist, and songwriter John Fogerty was the face of the band and created their legendary catalog of songs. They’re known, by many die hard fans as one of the most soulful bands with powerful lyrics. I, no joke, listen to CCR several times a week minimum.
