History of Lithuania [Part 2] - A New Kingdom and the Northern Crusade

- In part 2 of our history of Lithuania we discuss the fascinating pre-Christian Middle Ages where, against all odds, a Lithuanian Kingdom emerged that held firm to its pagan beliefs.
Despite constant threat from Orthodox Novgorod to the East, and the Latin Teutonic Order in the West, Lithuanians clung desperately to their language and pagan beliefs for far longer than did any other people in all of Europe.
It was through this existential trial that the Kingdom of Lithuania was forged, the story of which stands as a proud example of courage, tenacity, extraordinary resilience and dogged determination against seemingly impossible odds.

Being back in Lithuania is so nice having a forest literally a stone throw away is the best!
Well done! Maybe more Lithuanians will get interested in in their own history thanks to your videos, because you somehow manage to tell the story in a very engaging manner. Thank you for your hard work doing research and reporting to the rest of the world 🙏😉👍
Thank you so much! I hope so. Lithuanians deserve to feel pride in their long history and outsized influence.
@@BalticWorld
We do. Sadly for 50 years Soviet regime were doing everything to erase us from the world's history (locally and worldwide). Even now we got a lot of people who went through Soviet education system that was mainly focusing on Russian and Soviet Union history and achievements this way diminishing our own significance and national pride.
Fortunately this is no longer a case. People are going back to their roots, the number of Lithuanians converting back to ancient paganism is constantly rising and we are teaching our children Lithuanian history in schools. Now it's time for the rest of the world to re-descover us again and your channel is adding an incredible value to this mission! 🙏
@@baktom Absolutely! Neither Russian, nor Polish prapoganda can erase out roots. Lithuanians were, are and always will be Northern, pagan people with their own unique culture! Glory to Lietuva!
I'm not gonna lie, it is very strange to find a guy on UA-cam, who is like so into Lithuania :D and the history of it!
I am Lithuanian, so I got to say - thank you! I'm honored!
You should look into the legends of 'Pilėnai'. It is a legend of an entire small wealthy village - community, that decided to burn themselves instead of accepting Crusaders.
Also, do you know the War of the Roses?
We had the same! You can read about the Great Duke Gediminas and his entire family. He had two more famous sons who ruled the country equaly, and then when one of the sons died, his son just took over and almost started a civil war.
Thanks Martyna, there's a lot to love about Lithuania. And I'll look more closely at the great upheavals in the Gediminas dynasty ;).
My father is Lithuanian and for me this is so wonderful to be able to learn
It's a beautiful place - be sure to get up there when it all opens up.
We Lithuanians are good at holding onto our identity.
We held pagan tradition against the military might of the West.
We held our language when the tsar had forbidden it in print.
We held our Catholic faith - our 500 year old identity by then - under the atheistic communist regime.
It was said, at a time when Lithuania was but a tiny part of Russian empire, that "a Lithuanian is a person who loves freedom and respects the laws of Lithuania". We'll hold onto that identity for a long time as well.
Ačiū už įdėtas pastangas. Puikus video
Thank you!
Thanks for this, was looking for a video on Lithuanian history. Did some random reading and realised I don't know much about Lithuanian history, despite its big impact on European history. So I checked UA-cam and was surprised that there is almost nothing!
u should post this video on reddit / lithuania just to get more exposure . ur videos deserve more views
Thanks Vytenis, I'll check with Charlene to see if we can do this.
brilliant content!
Incedibly well done. Being fascinated by history I was a little bummed about the lack of detailed history on the web concerning this land and its people.
Thank you Vajrahaha - we actually have a dedicated series planned on the Northern Crusades so hopefully we'll be able to explore in much more detail in 2022.
Only know about Lithuania from following and viewing Dangerous Policy. Until now, I still have problem pronouce this country. Thank you.
Polish-Lithuanian commenwealth was actually established with Lublin union in 1569, before it Kingdom of Poland and Grand duchy of Lithuania were separate countries and even after the 1569 it maintained some sort of suvergnety, altrough before that Lithuania and Poland were ruled by the same ruler, so you were partially right.
True, thanks! The term wasn't used till much later, but the political union took place at that time - I'll point out the distinction in part III. :).
Well done good sir. One of my personal favorite Lithuanian battle tactics would be placing a road into a swamp and knowing the path, then tricking knights into thinking it's all road and then having them get bogged down in the rest of the swamp because they don't know the secret path. I would say Lithuania is like Shrek: we just want people to "Get out of me swamp"
that secret roads calld Kūlgrinda. Kūlis in Samogitian means stone, Grinda - kind of pavement
Thanks for this. I am just plain curious what drives you researching this? My guess Lithuanian's roots? Anyway well done and deserves respect. Good luck!
Thanks! Actually no - I have no Lithuanian family connection. Just been there several times and realise how underrated that country is, and how under-researched and under-appreciated is the whole region!
I keep liking and commenting this channels videos. You Sir deserve way more subs and views!
Channel is young and yes small, but we have the best followers ever!
Concise and to the point. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for watching!
You do this on very high level. Some our "professors" have to learn from you. They still speak about "the only Lithuanian king" but we had many pagan kings. The term of the "Grand Duchy of Lithuania" appeared only in 1413 (Horodle). Thank you for your great labour!
Your channel is simply PERFECT. I'm simply surprised and delighted!
Thank you so much, Artūras! Delighted that you enjoy it - tis a labour of love I assure you :D.
To say you've done a good job would be an understatement. I myself have been searching to know more about Lithuanian culture, traditions, history and so on. As for the history part, you've covered a lot of ground which I didn't find on any channel. Appreciate your work buddy, keep up the good work.
Thanks so much Siddique! Yes Lithuania history is not covered nearly enough.
@@BalticWorld Any advice to learn more about Lithuanian people and cultural norms? Like, I know some ignorants are out there thinking Lithuania is still under russia. There are some things that are normal to us (asian culture) but may be deal breaker for them.
@@MdSid05 feel free to ask anything you want. there are soem ithunians ready to help including myself
@@vytautassulcas6494 appreciate your support. Are you on FB or Instagram?
Really interesting..I am quite well informed about medieval European history, but this video has given me a lot of new information. Thank you.
Yet another excellent video! I'm very happy to discover your channel and looking forward for more videos. I particularly like your angle, looking at how Lithuania influenced the world and it's not always acknowledged. Let's make Lithuania famous again!
As a fellow pagan and Yotvingian, I'd be very interested to see your views on the idea that Yotvingian/Sudovian tribes hold off the enemies from the East, South and West allowing Lithuanians to grow stronger and establish a state. It's a tough one but maybe one day :)
Thanks Ing! The next instalment is taking a while because there's so much to put in and leave otu - coming soon though. Thanks for following!
loved it, deserves more views :)
Thanks Zymantė - we're getting there slowly :).
Hello, thank you for doing these videos. I hope to see a lot more of these videos! They're great!
Cheers Paulius! Currently planning for this to be a six part series.
@@BalticWorld oohhh... looking forward to it!
I’m American. We have no awareness about Polish and Lithuanian history, especially 1200s-1800s. Very cool.
Masterpiece!
Thank you!
Very interesting video. I very like it, keep it up :)
Thank you very much!
great video
Been waiting for this one
I think d lot of old Prussians mixed with the Germans in the area to create population of Prussia... But now it's mostly Russian. This history is fascinating. I hope you can get even more in depth soon.
Thanks Mate!
No.Germans killed them all at WW1 .But after WW2 that territory took soviet russia .And now they have peace of russian world on a bank of baltic sea,and a port, which not freeze
@@irma-108 No
Prussia in ww1 and a bit before were not real Prussia(baltic tribe/nation) it was just Germany under name Prussia
🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹 love all the Baltics
the union between poland and lithuania is very controversial between lithuanian historians as many say that the union was a mistake and should not have happened. many say that because poland was very into western european affairs it couldnt deal with the growing russian threat therefore dooming lithuania and themselfs to subjugation.
Theirs 1 detail that i remember about mindaugas, he didnt neccesarily convert back to paganism, rather he was assasinated by Treniota (whom allegedly led the battle of durbe against the crusaders) and another guy who i cant remember the name of but he later escaped to Pyskov and became orthadox and later a prince of Pyskov
Why are you so interested in Lithuania 🇱🇹? Do you have any relatives from here?
Because this country will have booming economy in a decade
I don't have family there no, but I have been several times and fell in love with it. Lithuania is one of the most underrated of all countries, but eventually the world will discover it.
Saulė, Durbė, Mindaugas, Samogitia (Žemaitija) those pronunciation a bit off. But however it's great and accurate facts otherwise. Thanks for making videos. And one fun fact, Samogitian retain their old believes until XV century. At 1418 they had last major uprising against christian baptists, but unfortunatly they lost the uprising. How ever our old gods are still here and their traditions are well kept and alive till this day.
Heh, well as an Australian I can barely pronounce English properly ;). Thanks for watching, and thanks for the info re: Samogitian uprising - it will likely be important for the next episode in the series!
@@BalticWorld Nah yeah, it's ok. Best of luck on future videos
NO, NO, NO!! Not Perknikus: PERKUNAS; (pron Perkoonas) God of Thunder!!
my guts hurt to hear word lithuania for this part of baltic history... up to 10:16 there was 0 thing told that involve lithuania... samogitian where the ones that wrote that history
Please improve your pronunciation of Lithuanian names.
