I am a Lithuanian-Brazilian and I have a huge respect and admiration for this amazing country. My Lithuanian great-grandmother always told me stories about Lithuania, especially how beautiful it was in the Spring. Much love to all the Lithuanians all over the world!
Oh yeah, you do have a lithuanian last name
Yeah, it came from my Lithuanian great-grandfather from Kaunas (or some city near it) and it was passed to his son, my grandfather, to my father and finally me. I still have the passport from my great-grandfather, Mykolas Zilinskas, from the 1920s, when Lithuania was still independent from the Reds.
''Brazil is a cool place to live''.
LoL, but then again it depends where you live in Brazil, since some regions in Brazil have unimaginable violence on daily basis and third world standards of living.
Most of Lithuanians came to Sao Paulo, the richest state in Brazil, and the South Region. Sao Paulo HDI and GDP per capita are on par with most Eastern European countries and some Western too. I love Lithuania, but I don't know if i would get used to its climate, as Sao Paulo is a subtropical place with mean temperatures of 23-27 celsius, the perfect climate for me.
Eimantas Varaneckas being a polititian in brazil is pretty rad
The reason why everyone thinks that Latvia and Lithuania are like sisters/brothers is that when we are growing up, we are told that Lithuania is our biggest friend(which is true) and we are the same. That's why we are calling each other "braļuhas" - "brothers". If latvian is traveling to Lithuania, you feel like home and everyone is nice to you. That's why we love each other so much.
Linda Bēme Do you understand one another or do you speak English or Russian?
True :)
Lithuanian and Latvian are not mutually intelligible. Elder generation speak Russian and everyone under 30 speak English
Linus Wärn Sadly, we don't understand each other to talk. At least for me, listening to Latvian is impossible to understand, but when reading, I can get what the text is about (sometimes wrongly, since we have some false-friends words).
We understand some words, but mostly we speak English and Russian with each other. :)

its not that far ! traveled from vilnius to cali and back non stop in 2days.. fast and easy
Im Lithuanian who lives in the Netherlands. it's not that big of a ride honestly. From Eindhoven to Klaipeda it takes me around 17-18h to drive. We do travel every half a year there for a couple of weeks. Otherwise flights from Eindhoven to Vilnius are quite common and cheap as both Wizzair and Ryanair is flying between those two cities.
Love you❤️🔥❤️🔥
@@ignaskybransas926 17-18 hr? that's so short. I expected something like 2 days. I live in New Zealand, and to drive the country from bottom to top would take you about 26 hours (3 hour ferry ride between the islands) and that's without any stops. I guess it's the georgraphy, lot of hills and mountains here, Europe is mostly flat and straight etc.
@@JaimieRain Yeah i would assume geography has a lot to do with it. Also if you zoom in Europe you will see how many Highways we have and other types of good routes where we could do 120-150kmh most of the time without having to stop anywhere.
Honestly, I’ve seen a lot of videos trying to inform people about my country Lithuania and usually I see a lot of weird and false claims but this video has done a very good job! It's pretty much always that way in the former Eastern Bloc. They combine the most visually appealing genes (the Scandinavians also have those by the way) with a culture that gives women no excuse not to take care of their bodies.

Gott aclear some things:
1. Nobody ever thought about The hill of crosses as creepy. Its a christian monument started long time ago, later serving as a symbol of resistence against russia (tzar and soviet), it was desroyed several times but after each time it grew back even bigger.
2. Crosses are our national monument. In the 18-20th century, many crossroads, and houses had their own cross. They were being made from carved wood or metal. It served as a place of meditation or prayer for those who could not attend the church or for other reasons. These crosses have their own stylized curves and carvings, which closely relate to the paganism (documented in books). My grandfather, a professional blacksmith used to make those in his free time. (this tradition was had poland as well i think)
3. The KGB bunkers and interogation experiences are small local businesses, not something "big" that everybody knows about.
4. If there is anything creepy about lithuania at all, its the politics and inherited public pesimism. After the destruction of soviet union, the former communists took control of the government which resulted in kind of significant lagging in development and essential reforms. Lots of money were stolen by those people, and remanants of the party are still leeching. (thanks to active a few active people (tapinas, maldeikiene, etc.) investigational journalism and ballzy politicians crack down the money leechers and corrupted ones.
5. Bogs and swamps are not "creepy" and there are not too many of them. There are only about 5 decently sized marshes, which are protected and can only be accessed by a wooden footpath. Once a year a number people are issued permissions to harvest the marsh. There are tons berries and mushrooms. Ive heard my uncle tell a story where he used to carry 80kg bag of pristine mushrooms back home. (yes, forest goods were essential to survival (mostly winter) about 30-40 years back, now these goods are still very sought after.)
lncubus99, This needed to be said, hill of crosses isn't creepy to the locals at all. Also no Lithuanian or Latvian thinks of our countries as creepy, sisters - yes, but creepy - naaah. Other points you mentioned were really good too! Ačiū!
+ he mentioned that the only king in Lithuanian living history was Gediminas xdd
And he wrote Vytautynas :DD
thank you...
I imagine the number of marshes is quite high but you're used to them so you just don't notice or consider them or think it's normal. I live in the marshiest area in my country and I would have never considered it if I wasn't told by geographers, I just thought it was normal. I once read that back in the middle ages, in the Baltic people would go to war in winter, despite the harsh northern winters, because at least you could move troops on the frozen land, whereas in summer it was really hard to move armies through the country because of all the marshy lands.
okay I'm from Lithuania and this video is the best thing I have seen so far I'm laughing so hard thank you!! XD
it was pretty good, a couple things tho:
-Mindaugas was the one to unite us and he was the only king in Lithuanian history
-you’re pronunciations are absolutely horrid but it’s ok you tried
-if u ever do an updated version you should mention the traditional Lithuanian dances and songs

Wrong facts: Lithuania didn't cut off that little tail village from Belarus. It was the opposite: Lithuanian villages were just randomly sliced off by occupants forming a border, but that particular village fought their way back to be united with Lithuania. Lots of villages next to Belarus border still speak Lithuanian.
Really? I thought they spoke Polish next to the Belarus border.
@@anicetusurban8516 there where few mixed regions with Polish minority closer to Vilnius around Salcininkai, but not in south.
fun fact: language doesn't connected with a borders most the time the closer to the border you get the bigger the mix of languages of two countries you'll get. And like half of Lithuania speaks Russian, so...
@@PandaBearWithMic True, there is always a mix at the border, because borders are usually defined by authorities in their "offices". But what it has to do with Lithuanians speaking Russian? During Soviet Occupation people had to learn Russian, it was pushed everywhere. Now young people refuse to learn it in favour of English. But it has nothing to do with the ethnic regions cut off at the borders..
not only that, but during USSR many people were re-settled from parts of the country to another...

Hello
2:00 well, after trying to count the distance from the point to the Northern-, Southern-, Western-, and Eastern- most point of Europe, I can kinda approve that :)
I am American with Lithuanian ethnicity. My great grandparents moved here in the early 1900s. When I have the opportunity, I want to be the first person in my family to return to Lithuania. My ancestors came from the Kaunas region. I know this because I've done a lot of research.
"They have an easter grandma instead of a bunny, yeah!"
"Most hot air balloons per capita, awesome!"
"Their own national perfume, wicked"
"Some of the best internet speeds in the world, cool!"
"Don't whistle inside or your house will explode, wait what"
It's just an old superstition. I don't think anyone actually believes it these days.
As Lithuanian I Do
People say that if you whistle in your house you will blow your house away. Blow away in Lithuanian means to loose something carrely.
Most common superstitions:
Never say goodbye to person over a doorstep. We might become enemies.
If I step on your foot, you have to step back or our friendship will be ruined.
If you hit heads with someone it means that we are going to be related. E.g. our kids will marry or we'll marry.
Saying something "i'll never SOMETHING BAD" means you have to knock on any piece of wood or tree. If you don't it might happen.
In my region (Samogitia) it is said that “if you whistle inside your house, you will “whistle” away your money.
It mean to loose money (unexpected expenses, forget somewhere..).
If remember right it’s because of remaining pagan beliefs and superstition about magical spirits/creatures.
@@SeRaFiNuTe I'm from Samogitia too, but we say that if you whistle inside your house, you will call a devil to your home.
I really want to know more about the "book smuggling years" so I'm going to type a comment out instead of typing it into google like a normal person.
The books were smuggled from German controlled Lithuanian minor region. (today its the Kaliningrad Oblast)
That is correct. Important to add the reason for this. During that time, Lithuania was occupied by Russian Empire (way before Soviet Union). Russia had plans to integrate this region (not for the last time) to their Empire and eliminate ethnicity of Lihuanians. So they started Russification program, which included ban on all Lithuanian language publications printed in the Latin alphabet and writing in Cyrillic were encouraged. People who smuggled illegal books and periodicals across the border were called "Knygnešiai" (literal translation - people who carries the books).
Vytautas Vasiliauskas russifacation started 1862 after we lost second uprising war for restoration of independent poland-lithuania state. 1/3 of ethnic Lithuania teritorry became slavic during rusifacation, thats norhtwestern part of modern day Belarus. only few lithuanian villages and towns still exist today but not for a long, as russification continues in belarus and even belarusian language and nation is in huge danger. . So that region was too far from germany for book smuglers and not many books could make it that far east, but in other parts of Lithuania there were many books, political antirussian newspappers, and many secret lithuanian schools in many towns and villages. So lithuanian language are spoken until this day
I don't know if you will find a monument for the smuggler anywhere else in the world. :)
All the replies were very good. Also, if I remember right... people who smuggled books also smuggled other things like alcohol (which is cheaper abroad to this day?) to make a living and books were just like a nice thing thing they did to keep Lithuanian alive. Basically, they were not motivated by money to smuggle books. I may be off though, correct me if my memory served me wrong from history classes.
That's some groovy sculpture there!
I am Lithuanian, and i am very happy, that you and your team i guess, made this video, since Lithuania is mostly not that well known. Thank you.

I'm a simple Latvian. I see Lithuania, I like.
NOOOO. You got something wrong. The first AND THE ONLY king of Lithuania who united baltic tribes was Mindaugas. Gediminas was a Grand Duke of Lithuania. And the grandson of Gediminas (our proudest ruler) was Vytautas The Great, not Vytautynas. Otherwise you did great. Thumbs up for you.
By proudest ruler i meant that he was the ruler we look at as the best for Lithuania and her interests. Lithuania at the peak of it's existence back then. Unfortunately he died before he was crowned. So yeah, we only had 1 king, except for the ones elected in The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the union in 1569. I hope i made my history teacher proud ^^
Thanks to Vytautas at one point Lithuania became a massive country, we had lands that stretched from Baltic sea to Black sea. He was also the one who, together with his cousin Jogaila, king of Poland, managed to win long lasting war against the greatest enemy - Teutonic ordin.
" managed to win long lasting war against the greatest enemy - Teutonic ordin" --- A shame that Poles had to do most of the work during wars with Teutonic Order
Kamil Szadkowski Lol. You believe that you are saying the truth? :D Poland was the one who invited Teutonic order to Prussian lands. Then Poland was the one who encouraged Teutonic raids against Lithuania. Lithuania managed to protect its borders the whole time from Teutonic knights arrival to 1410. As the time went by this order gradually became a problem even for Poland. Thanks to two lithuanians Vytautas and Jogaila and their combined local and hired mercenary forces we managed to win against the order.
"Then Poland was the one who encouraged Teutonic raids against Lithuania" --- Against Yotvingians not Lithuania as a whole.
"Thanks to two lithuanians Vytautas and Jogaila and their combined local and hired mercenary forces we managed to win against the order." --- If you refer to Battle of Grunwald just remember that Lithuanians run off the battlefield leaving Poles to do the majority of the work.
