    Never in my life did I imagine it would be so much fun to watch another man shave. But, I just ordered the iKon X3 razor and I'm waiting for it to arrive in the post, so I figured I would look online to see if there were any videos showing how it should be used. This is my very first time ever using a safety razor and I definitely don't want to butcher my face. Thanks for the wonderful video!

      +Ben Griggs happy to bring some unexpected joy to an otherwise mundane activity!
      The real key here, as a new wetshaver, is to **watch** the pressure... The slant bar razor requires a very light touch, in contrast to a multi-blade cartridge razor.
      If you have not yet seen my wetshaving tutorial, look at the playlist in my channel.

    I just got a slant head razor as a gift and still trying to figure out how to use it without butchering myself. You gave some solid good advice! Great instructional video and I'm going to try some of the products you use. Thanks!

      No worries, glad it helped! Watch the pressure and just shave "normally" recognizing that the slant may be more efficient than you expect.

      Chris, go for the new version with the awesome bear logo! That uses the Glissant base, which is apparently a real improvement over the already very good base used in this original release of the soap.As always, thanks for watching!

    Hello Michael,
    for a while I desired a second slant, besides my 39C, and after seeing this video I pulled the trigger. I received the X3 today and I have to say that it looks very well manufactured and handsome in its " industrial" look. I am looking forward to the first shave, hopefully it will work well for me. Thanks again for sharing your shaving experience!

      So I had the first shave with a new Rrrapira Platinum Lux blade, and half way through the first pass I got the razor angle to work for me - it is a fairly narrow angle in my opinion - with very good results. Not much to add to your review, except to confirm the extreme smoothness of the X3, while at the same time being fairly efficient. As you said, it feels very safe on the skin and caused no irritation whatsoever. Probably just as good as the Merkur 39C, but more forgiving, I am very happy I bought it and thanks again for your review.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +Roberto S. Gerometta very glad to hear it worked out for you! I bet after a few shaves the angle will come naturally and the shave just gets better.

    • @soncinr
      @soncinr 8 років тому

      after 5 or 6 shaves I can now say that this razor is not as efficient as the Merkur 39C, but has not caused any irritation whatsoever, which is great. I have used Rapira and Wilkinson in it, next step will be Polsilver and Feather. This will probably became my daily razor.

    Hi Mike, about 3 months into wet shaving. I have really sensitive skin and it's done great. I have to really watch my angle while shaving with a V20C head, I've heard good things about slants with people with sensitive skin, I really dance around my lower neck area and only go with the grain as anything else I'll get razor burn or nicks. I've mapped my growth and try using a good slick lather with sensitive skin white presono and even applying soap for the 2 and 3rd pass on my neck area can be sensitive.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +Hyperion there are some other things to try on top of your current routine.
      Try rinsing with cool or cold water in between passes, it may be that warm or hot water is adding to your irritation.
      When lathering up for those later passes, be gentle with the brush; you might be over-scrubbing when re-lathering.
      It could be as simple as trying a different blade!
      I would avoid the Merkur 37C, many people experience irritation on the neck with that slant.
      Good luck!

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +Roy Williamson add more water! You can easily test how far to go with the water, it actually takes quite a bit before most soaps really fall apart.
      You should also feel pretty confident about some vigorous working of the lather at first, make your brush earn its keep!

    I was wondering whether it shaved as well as it looks, and now I know. For some reason the Merkur 37c creates quite a harsh shave below the chin, and consequently I am reluctant to go the extra yard with it. The Ikon looks like it has a better balance. Thanks for the in-depth review, it has given me food for thought.

    • @mfreedberg

      +Martin Kemper I always had some trouble on my neck with the Merkur 37C, apparently a pretty common issue.
      No issues here, but this razor is also more expensive - but I think it is certainly worth the money!

      ItalianBarber is now offering the IKon X3 slant head for $29.99 and promise a version next week including a RazoRock Bulldog handle for only $36.99. (Maggard Razors is also offering the IKon X3 slant head for $35.) At that price, it seems to be a no brainer. I thought it would easily be 2-3-4 times as expensive. Rather amazed so many new slant razor options (IKon X3, RazoRock WunderBar, RazoRock German 37, Fine Superlite Slant) have been (or will be) released within such a short time period.
      Is the IKon X3 your favorite slant razor you've tried at any price (and availability)?
      As always, much thanks!

    i've never been a regular shaver. even when i was in the marine corps, i didn't HAVE to shave everyday due to light growth. But now getting older, i really enjoy smaller things like shaving. cartridge razors always broke out my sensitive skin, and DE safety razors have done a service for me, in that aspect. Hey +Michael, I have been on the look out for a RRSS V1 based on your glowing praise of it several years ago. Now I understand this X3 is MUCH cheaper than the Stealth and the Wunderbar, and more available than either too. Could you comment on the facial comfort regarding the Stealth against the X3? I am still on my first razor (Merkur 26c) but I have been looking at getting a 2nd razor sometime this year, maybe Christmas.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +Mike Jansen The X3 is really good... Very smooth, easy to use, and really another effortless shave for many, given the feedback being posted. Both the Stealth and the X3 are very comfortable razors, but I have not shaved with the Stealth Slant for a while now.
      Your best option is to get boththe X3 and the Fine Superlite Slant, and you could use the X3 handle on the Fine as well!

    Have a question - how do you compare this Slant to the Maggard Razors Slant? They seem very similar in design & wonder if the more expensive head (iKon X3/$45 vs MS Slant/$20) is more efficient or simply more expensive. Great video! It has got me thinking of how far can I push my Astra SP blade before the shave quality is affected? Hmmm...

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  7 років тому +1

      The iKon X3 is a touch more comfortable and smooth, but only a touch. Both offer excellent shaves. The iKon sometimes is smooth enough that you do not feel the blade at all, but the Maggard Slant is really not far behind. If it were me, I would choose the iKon X3 and the Maggard Slant over the Merkur 37C and its clones.
      I have been getting a week out of most blades now, which may just be because I am shaving through that first rough shave, after which the blade smooths out again.

    Hey Michael, been watching some of your vids and finally subscribed. Just got the Ikon x3 with the bullsdog handle. First shave wasn't as good as I was hoping :( . I used a Voshosh blade as it works for me in other razors but didn't do so well with the x3. I have had some good shaves with the (wait for it ) Derby blades . My question to you is , are you using a different angle with the x3 as with other razors? I have a Maggard slant (v2) that I get really great results with using the same angles as my other razors. Thanks for your help.. from the mountains of Western North Carolina ..

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому +1

      +Robert R indeed, the angle is a bit different, but it will also differ when you use it. Experiment a bit with changing the angle as you shave, so that you can find the right angle for you. The key here is to let the comfort of the shave be your guide rather than some perfect absolute angle... Not to worry, the right angle will not be hard to find!
      Derby blades? Better you than me!

    Michael, I have the X3 and like but I am curious if the Wunderbar (razorock) will be even better. I am looking for the ultimate smooth shave especially to avoid irritation on those sensitive bits on my neck. X3 with new Rapira Platinum Lux is most of the way there, just curious if the Wunderbar might be perfect? Thoughts?

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +Marc Girard I have never shaved with the Wunderbar razor, so I cannot speak to the quality of the shave compared to the X3.
      I would also recommend that you try some other blades in the X3, you may find that a "duller" blade actually is smoother and less harsh than some of the sharper blades.

    A very efficient (and mild) razor. I don't notice much (if any) difference between the scalloped edges. The head design might have been inspired by the Lutz Slant (where the scalloped edges and blade gap seem to make a difference) -- /watch?v=d915h-bWhH8
    It's crazy that Maggard Razors will soon release another inexpensive slant (head $19.99 and with handle for $29.99) and Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements will soon release a bakelite open comb slant (which might have been inspired by a Fasan slant) for $20. With (at least) four inexpensive slants coming on the market in 2016 (by Fine, RazoRock, Maggard and PAA, plus another slant announced by Stirling Soap Co), one can only wonder "what's in the water" and what's in store in 2017.

  • @M82RKY
    @M82RKY 6 років тому

    Hi Michael, great review!!
    I just had the x3 delivered and it looks outstanding but...... When I fit the blade it doesnt sit parallel and there is no slack to adjust, is this a design fault or is this how the blade sits in the x3?
    Hope you can help.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  6 років тому

      The blade will look torqued or twisted because the slant is angled *and* twisted. There should be no slack to adjust; the slant head will hold the blade tightly and under a bit more pressure than normal. All by design -- enjoy your new razor!
      One tip: light touch. REALLY pay attention to the pressure: that razor is taking off the hair even if you think it is not, so keep the pressure light.

    • @M82RKY
      @M82RKY 6 років тому

      Michael Freedberg Thanks for getting back Michael, really appreciate it.
      It's not that the blade looks twisted, it is about 1mm out of parallel either side and I can feel the blade exposure during my shave.
      I did modify the pins by filing them down on one side to allow some slack on the blade and the head now gives a nicer feel on my face. When I spy down the gap of the head it is pretty parallel now.
      I am pretty new to DE shaving and manage to get really good with my Muhle R89 but this slant has bitten me a few times now, I take it I need to work on my technique and don't blame the razor.
      Thanks again!!!!

  • @chokeout412

    Well, I got one shave under my belt with the X3. Having been successful with the Merkur 34c and EJ DE89 and Feather/Personna Blades, I thought I'd step it up with a slant. My first shave wasn't very successful. My face felt irritated for a few hours after, even though I paid attention to keep a light touch. My problem was this; With a light touch, I didn't get a close BBS shave as I was accustomed too. So, I found myself doing more passes trying to learn the razor and its angle. It's my fault and I think I'll do better with the X3 with more practice. I'll give it another shot in two days and update. Any suggestions fellas?

    • @chokeout412
      @chokeout412 8 років тому

      Okay, the shave today was much better. Against the grain up the neck still left some irritation, but the overall was much better. This razor just has a learning curve as opposed to the easy going 34C. I do like it though.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      The X3 head design does make the blade "disappear" a bit so you do not always get the same feedback from the feel of the blade on your skin. I think this does sometimes lead to a rough shave, with more work than normal required to get a close shave. I am glad to see you stuck with it, and I think you will soon find the correct approach to getting a *consistently* great shave with this slant razor.
      Good luck, and remember that persistence pays off!

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому +1

      I think that the X3 has a more comfortable feel on the face, and perhaps feels a little "safer" if that makes sense. It also has a smaller head which can make certain parts of your face easier to shave. They both do an excellent job on taking the hair off, but I think I would give a slight edge to the X3. The thing is -- that means nothing if you find that the X3 does not work for you and the Fine Superlite is amazing!

    • @terrywho22
      @terrywho22 8 років тому

      Interesting comments. I think the Superlight gives a great shave, but as you know all too well, it's hard to pass up on the prospect of finding something that might be just a bit closer to providing a perfect shave (even if we never actually get there.) Thanks for the quick reply!

      I do not believe so, that must just be a trick of the light.
      If that IS the case, there is certainly no mention of it at all on the vendor's website or in any of the other descriptions of the razor. Final answer: Both sides of the head are the same.

    • @MrSanesaw
      @MrSanesaw 7 років тому

      Thanks for your reply mike! The head has two different sides. One side having a bigger scalloped design than the other. From what I've read on some forums is the bigger side provides for a slightly more aggressive shave. The difference may be negligible.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  7 років тому

      Yes, the *comb* shape is different, but if that is supposed to change the shave, it is failing (grin)! I took that to be entirely aesthetic and of no impact on the shave itself at all. I do not believe that the head geometry is actually different on each side, but I could be wrong. I will mail the vendor and ask for clarification.

    What size of bowl do you have? Is it the regular or large one? Thanks!

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +MTK- I have the regular sized bowl, which is really spot on... Shallow enough that the brush does not clink or hit the sides, big enough that you can build a lot of lather and it stays in the bowl.
      The texture works well, and even works to hold a puck of soap in place if all you do is load your brush rather than actually build your lather.

    • @mfreedberg

      The X3 uses a machined aluminum head on a stainless steel handle. I do not see any reason why this head should not last for ages and ages --treat it, like all razors, with care and it should go for a long time.

    Hi Michael, what differences do you find between ikon X3 and Merkur 37C?

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому +2

      +Nino Amico the Merkur 37C is a good razor, but not a great razor. It does tear through your beard, and is an efficient razor, but not a truly comfortable razor. I, like many others, could not seem to avoid irritation on my neck with the 37C. You may find it to be both efficient and comfortable, really only you can tell in use.
      The X3 is a very smooth, effortless razor, manufactured from higher quality materials, and will cost more. 100% worth the extra money in my opinion.

      +blarg I have tried the 102!
      Check out the video here: ua-cam.com/video/g6uHdoKxKMQ/v-deo.html
      The 102 was very good, but this razor is better...at least for me. Very natural to use, effortless shave, all over good!

    You don't seem very concerned about shaving on the parts of your face without lather

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  7 років тому

      True, which is due to the residual slickness of the soap and the fact that I can tell from the shave if that will work or not. I do recommend that new wetshavers really stick to shaving only where there is lather, but once people get a bit more experienced *and the slickness is there*, it's ok to shave where there is no lather.
      If I start to do that, and there is any uncomfortable harshness or friction or the blade starts to catch, I just re-lather!

    This slant or the Maggards slant? Not quality based, perfomance based!

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  5 років тому

      I think the X3 is slightly better, a little less aggressive, but it's not a dramatic difference.

  • @Sunny-vt6kw
    @Sunny-vt6kw 8 років тому

    How aggressive is it out of 10?

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому +1

      +Abhishek Sharma 6?
      It does not feel aggressive at all, the razor provides very good blade control with no chatter or flex. Yes, you can feel the blade, but it feels very safe on the face, not sure how else to describe it!

    • @Sunny-vt6kw
      @Sunny-vt6kw 8 років тому

      +Michael Freedberg so if I have a thick beard and shave mostly when it's half a inch thick if this razor still good for me? , I just wanna try a slant but not sure which one.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +Abhishek Sharma Yes I would think so, the razor should have little issue with a heavy beard growth. The razor does not clog easily, either.
      I would also just remind you to try some different blades in the razor, so you can find the right combination. Also, make sure you are getting a good slick lather!

    • @Sunny-vt6kw
      @Sunny-vt6kw 8 років тому

      is the ikon 102 more aggressive? than the X3?

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  8 років тому

      +Abhishek Sharma I have only used the 102 briefly, but I do not remember it being aggressive either. Both razors are very comfortable and efficient, neither one feels harsh. The twisted blade in the X3 works very well for me, but that of course does not mean it will therefore work well for you. If I had to pick, I would go for the X3.

    I'll admit that I'm one of the "slant-sceptics". I always thought they were a gimmick - a twist (pun intended ;)) on a DE razor design with no real benefit. A few degrees of angle on the blade is nothing you couldn't emulate on a normal razor (or negate on a slant) using "Gillette-slide" - that was my thought. Seeing how many positive things have been said about them in many YT shaving videos, I might have to think again ;).
    I'm not sure if it's the angle on the blade, or the act of twisting the blade making it somehow "stiffer", or is it all placebo? Either way people say mostly good thing about "the slants". I guess I need to investigate that...

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  6 років тому

      Twisting and curving the blade does make the edge more rigid and changes the cutting angle. The slant is not a miracle razor, but it does make for very easy shaves for certain beard types. I find that the good slants just take less effort, they seem to pass through the tough spots more easily and with less tugging or resistance. Less razor burn, even with more buffing, and I do love to buff!
      Get one, you may well be very surprised at just how much you like it.

    • @niznikb

      Thanks, Michael, I sure will try one! Just have to go through the backlog of all the recently ordered items first.
      Makes me wonder though, do those mythical guys who really save money using DEs instead of cartridge razors really exist?
