Appreciate how you put off doing a review until after using something for a couple of weeks in order to give more nuanced details about the products that most other UA-camrs are unable to provide because they only record their first use/impressions. Thinking if I ever decide to get a slant, the Maggard will be the one that is added to the stable. Thanks again for the fantastic reviews of all the different products, it really helps your audience reduce the chances of buying something new that turns out to be a disappointment for them.
+targetbuttmonkey I do like this approach better, I feel like I can get a much better feel for the product rather than just the on the spot impressions. Yes, others may beat me to the punch and post day 1 videos, but I feel this format works better for me.
Hello Michael, I shaved today for the 6th time with the Maggard slant, and I like it quite a bit. More efficient than the Ikon X3 and just as smooth, with a nice gunmetal finish. Great shaver and the price is right!
Well Michael you got me to convert from Truefitt and Hill to Barrister and Mann. I went with the Cool line of soap, aftershave and cologne. They owe you a commission.
I do it all just for the LOVE! So glad I had a chance to pass on some samples so that you could see I wasn't just blowing smoke about the difference in the quality of the soap - and here you all, all Cool and all!
+Terry Lentz the slant does work really well. As for the Reserve line, I would recommend you look over the scents and consider if the upcoming Fern or Lavender ones might be more up your alley.
Thanks for the excellent review! I really enjoy MLS THE kraken, and totally get your point on scents. That's why I love the buy, sell, trade boards because you can give & get scents others may like or dislike because you may already know the soaps performance. Thanks for the excellent videos.
Great shave and great looking razor I have that handle but might have to give a slant a try again. I'll admit I've been out of the shave group loop lately and miss it thanks for the great video .
Great video as usual Michael. Seems that the razor and soap are both top notch. Back many moons ago when I was a multi blader, Gillette and Schick came out with that ball on the end of their razor handles and i found them very awkward and uncomfortable. I like a smooth handle for my four fingers, but thats me. Anyway keep the videos coming.
Leisureguy on Reddit did predict this rise in handle choices some time ago, and it is coming true - people really seem to like having solid choices on the combination of head and handle.
I know I'm late in the game but the razor head looks amazing and similar to the iKon x 3 slant razor head. But I heard this is more efficient.. I'll definitely be putting it in the radar Do you still use it?
Just used that slant last night it was insane how much comes off in the first pass. Tied mine to a cool python handle from Elite razor it looks bad ass. Used the Dead Sea soap from RR, smells and performs awesome.
Good review! It is nice to see a review that someone doesn't like part of a product. That said MLS makes fantastic soaps. I've been looking at that Maggard Slant and wondering how it compares to the Fine Slant.
+Darin Glisson the soap as soap is stellar, and I am 100% getting some Drunken Goat in future. The Fine Superlite is a different design, and is another very effective razor, although not as comfortable as the Maggard razor. It is impossible to say, however, which one would be better for you...get both!
I totally agree with the additional passes on this one. This was my first slant, but I can only see myself using it after some time of not shaving. I try to achieve bbs when I have to go to work or with my significant other, so I prefer using less aggressive ones (really like my de89 at this point), but in cases where if I haven't shaved for a while, this one will give an awesome first pass or two, which is enough when you just want to go out. Quick and efficient but certainly dangerous
I think this razor also benefits from some additional razor blade exploration - it may be that a smoother, but less sharp blade is better than going for sharp. Light touch, pay attention, keep your lather going, and this razor will deliver the goods. If you use too much pressure, or skimp on the lather, I think you will pay the price because the razor is so efficient.
I've never used a slant of any kind but since the current scuttle butt is about PAA Bakelite model; I may get one and try it out while keeping in mind your comments and suggestions from this video. Thank You.
Enjoy your reviews! Do you tend to use SB or slant as a daily? Watching this review makes me wonder if i apply too much pressure with my slants. I get ingrowns usually when i use.
+moatsart84 I rotate through all my razors, but I would choose the slants over the regular razors, for the most part. As for the slant, really don't overshave... If you are pressing down too much, then you are absolutely shaving into your skin...and ingrown hairs are right there. Gentle!
Great review. I wanted to point out that the text on the cap of the B&M Cool should be read, "A scent you can't refuse." The text and the rose are a definite reference to "The Godfather".
+Rigimort Yes, thank you for pointing that out, and I heard from Barrister and Mann about that as well :-) The perils of reading circular text on the fly...
Really nice videos man. I'm not sure if you've heard this before but I think you act and sound just like the character Oscar from The Office (US), insofar as speech patterns go. Oscar has a very clear and communicable speech pattern. I think it's great for youtube videos.
Hey, I'm totally new to this but just subscribed and love the videos I've seen from you so far. I was curious as to why you make 3 passes? Is that just for these safety razors? Love from Charlotte my fellow NC friend!
Welcome from the Triangle! I do three passes because each pass with a single edge (DE razor) only takes off so much hair. The three passes are just a way to get as close a shave as you can, with each pass reducing (but not eliminating) your beard growth. You could do two passes, but you will find that the shave is not as close as you like, and three passes generally seems to do it. Thanks for watching, and so glad to hear you are enjoying the videos! More coming, not to worry...
+RazoRock Yes, I have been checking the blade based on the advice from Maggard, alignment is fine. My issue is a patch of skin that intermittently is fragile or easily irritated...and that can lead to redness or worst case a weeper. It will last a week or two and then all will be well. Until the neck time (see what I did there?)
RazoRock I've never seen a product review where a competing company chimed in to try and raise doubt about the product that's being reviewed. That's very tacky, IMO.
Someone asked him this question and here's a link to his answer: www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/comments/53dj3x/review_maggard_slant_razor_mickey_lee_grand/d7smr0d
"Better" - that's hard to say. I like the slant more than the R41 and would certainly pick it over the R41 every time. Others really do well with the R41, and love how aggressive and "on the face" it is. Me? I go for the slant.
The Maggard Slant head can be a little "bitey', it's not as mild as the iKon X3, so experiment with some different blades. Really watch the pressure, because the razor is very efficient and you find you are shaving *into* your skin if you are not careful. Just to be clear - that's not a design issue with the slant, just a recognition of the fact that this slant, like many others, is really quite efficient on its own, no pressure required.
Ha ha, we'll always disagree on slants Michael. One thing I always notice when people use slants in their videos is the amount of passes and touch ups they do. Just about the exact amount as with any other razor they use in other videos. For this reason and with my own experience I say they are no more efficient. That said, I enjoy using a slant as much as any other razor because no two razors feel exactly the same. I'm with you on the cigarette smoke smell...disgusting, I wouldn't have been able to use that.
+Dubster I am beginning to wonder though if those touch up passes are just habit. My shave on Friday with this same razor was as close to BBS as I get, three passes and no touch ups. For me it comes down to the feel of the razor... These just feel like they are shaving with less resistance, and they just feel better somehow. The best part, really? That we have as many options as we do today.
By the way, my GEM 1912 arrived, it's 100+ years old (solid brass, the one with the cool art deco), how do you disinfect a razor like this without damaging the brass (70% alcohol, 99% alcohol? bathe in sunshine?). I'm still waiting for the GEM blades to arrive. I experimented with a DE blade, even slanting it a bit, the blade is too exposed, lol, it might as just use the bare blade or a straight razor. Thank you. I guess my next purchase should be a shaving soap and a brush (building up little by little, as art of manliness when it comes to shaving are quite expensive initially)? What's your favorite brush and soap? Is there an advantage to brushes with mixed natural hairs (not 100% badger)? Thank you.
EWWW!! Ashtray smelling soap. But great video. I have that maggard slant head and I did not have luck on fist try, I gotta try again.... My plastic Fine Slant and PAA aluminys Alpah Eclplitc are my fav slants currently
+jamie bairos if you like the plastic Fine Superlite, save your pennies and get the Fine Aluminum Slant! Tobacco / cigar soaps are really hot or miss for me nowadays.
Very informative about the products but also about technique. That's what so awesome about your videos. Thanks !
+Robert R you are very welcome!

+Roberto S. Gerometta glad to hear you are enjoying the razor! What soap or cream are you using?
I have been using Castle Forbes lavender and Haslinger Schafmilch, Gillette Silver Blue and Bolzano in the razor (GSB a bit smoother.)
Well Michael you got me to convert from Truefitt and Hill to Barrister and Mann. I went with the Cool line of soap, aftershave and cologne. They owe you a commission.

Great shave, Freedberg!
Great video Michael! That slant looks super efficient, and the B&M aftershave looks intriguing.
+Terry Lentz the slant does work really well. As for the Reserve line, I would recommend you look over the scents and consider if the upcoming Fern or Lavender ones might be more up your alley.
Thanks Michael!

Great shave and great looking razor I have that handle but might have to give a slant a try again. I'll admit I've been out of the shave group loop lately and miss it thanks for the great video .
+Chris Coyle no reason not to! These newly available slants are really good.
Another great shaving Michael! Good razor, Maggard Slant.
Bravo
Ciao
mauro
+Mauro Di Lernia thank you! I look forward to your review if you also get one!
Michael Freedberg
Then I'll try to get hold of a head of this slant.
But for me in Italy, plus the shipping costs that your head, let's see ...

good one! i love that Mr 5 handle,i am awaiting one those they are sold out of the them at the moment! that soap looks interesting!
+mapp47 Apparently more are on the way soonish!
If you like a tobacco scented soap, get a sample, you might love it.
I know I'm late in the game but the razor head looks amazing and similar to the iKon x 3 slant razor head.
But I heard this is more efficient..
I'll definitely be putting it in the radar

+zero9michael100 excellent, glad to hear it! Sounds like a great shave.
Very interesting razor, unusual handle.
I do like the handle shape, it is quite easy to hold and not slippery at all.
Heavier than I expected, but that has not turned out to be a problem.
It's really good.

I have a sample of grand Havana soap and I am one who really like it.Each to their own.
+The Suffolk Shaver think of it this way...more for you!
I can get a sense of the richness of the scent, but it just tips over the edge for me.
Insane feedback on that razor....Like razors with good feedback. How does it compare to the Ikon x3 ??

Michael Freedberg Excellent. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question, I greatly appreciate it! Looking forward to some more videos.
Looks a bit aggressive on the neck there, was the blade aligned right?
+RazoRock Yes, I have been checking the blade based on the advice from Maggard, alignment is fine.

Do you own the ikon x3? They seem similar?
If you look at his other videos he does a review of the ikon X3, so yes he does. Maybe he can respond with a comparison of the two.
+Tanner Low yah that would be great if he could do a comparison!
Someone asked him this question and here's a link to his answer: www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/comments/53dj3x/review_maggard_slant_razor_mickey_lee_grand/d7smr0d
Hey Michael, I think the sticker says "A Scent You Can't Refuse" :P
+Hugh Huynh indeed it does, I just misread it; a good Godfather reference!

Hi. Is Maggard's slant better than Muhle R41?
Thank you.
God bless, Proverbs 31
"Better" - that's hard to say. I like the slant more than the R41 and would certainly pick it over the R41 every time. Others really do well with the R41, and love how aggressive and "on the face" it is.
Me? I go for the slant.
Maggards Slant Head & MR14 Handle : 19$ on Black Friday.
TRex lost his mind...nuff said.
The Slant is coming to Greece. Only BBS shaves from now on.

Good video, who would create a soap that smells like cigarette smoke.
+Chris Baskett nobody, they clearly did not intend for that to be the case... it just smelled like that to me :-)
only places I try to get bbs skin is on the sides of my face
smells like a cuban cigar huh? well I already know that this is krammers favorite soap
+SpikeG. jr. To some, yes; apparently if it smells good, it smells really good!
