The best thing to do when hiking in bear country is to wear bells or use whistles so you don't walk up on them by surprise. Also you can look for droppings to see what kind of bears are near-by. Black bear droppings have leaves and berries - grizzly bear droppings have bells and whistles!
Matt your giving me a tour of where I used to work and fly in and out of Ospeka and MacKenzie BC in a Twin Navaho back some 30 years ago on that same gravel stripe. That's nice that it's still in use. Enjoy your trip even without Auto helping You fly.
" moose won't actually chase you " That's a MYTH ! My mom and i were chased by a cow moose around an electrical box for 35 min , the thing had murder in it's eyes and we barley managed to get away . This happens all the time . Being born and raised in the bush i have personally seen several people get chased more by moose than by bears .
I will now remember to run from "Moose" if they become agressive. I am outdoors off road and ground vehicle type person never thought I would enjoy your flying so much. I love your professionalism. I became instantly "hooked" thank you for providing people with these awesome experiences!!!
Keep working at it, Rachel, perhaps one day, Matt will be asking "ummm . . . may I have the plane back?" I admire how much you participate (recalling the many times you have helped video and especially the scene of you helping Matt pull the Bonanza through the grass at Oshkosh).
Excellent presentation. Such wonderful scenery. I lived in Anchorage for 8 years, and was lucky enough to get some flying in while I was there. Your production quality seems to have improved greatly. Thanks Matt.
discretion the better part of valor. Working with what information you have...weather, etc...diverting is a great choice, even if you have a lot of gas. For a young man, great piloting and SA skills. BTW...much easier to fly around Canada and Alaska in a USAF C-130, but certainly not as much fun as you are having. Keep the videos coming and would love more comments on the avionics you have in your Bonanza.
Been watching for quite a while now. All your vlogs are great but this one was exceptional imho. Owen looked pretty nervous about leaving 367hp to film while you flew. Lol. Loved the view of you taking off from gravel strip, dust flying, gear up and sound as you flew over! Will you be at Sun n fun 2020? Hoping to say hello to some aviation UA-camrs
You live in Canada long enough, you get used to the CADORS about moose on the runway, and wildlife in the vicinity of the runway/taxiway. On my Checkride, we were doing a precautionary landing procedure on a grass strip. My FIC on the preflight stated that she "might tell me to land, or might be an overshoot". When I confirmed on the downwind pass what she said, she asked why? I told her "Because there's two bull moose on the runway right now".
Excellent video, as usual. Just of your information, the only time a straight in approach is permitted into an uncontrolled airport in Canada is when you are on an Instrument Flight Plan.
Hi Matt Im Leo from Argentina , sorry by my english. Im pilot too. I and 7 friend rented 4 Cessna 172 and flew fron San Francisco to Anchorage in 2000 and back. So yours videos remmember me this trip. Congratulations and good fly. Ah if you come to Argentina please let me know.
If this isn’t a great promotional video for buying a Beechcraft Bonanza, I don’t know what one could be! Good job to all who made this! Been with you guys since the beginning. Keep it up!
What is the Service Ceiling of a Moose? I would think at above 10 feet AGL you would be pretty safe from them. Bears can climb but not without some kind of structure. So there's that. Just the same, as you watch for other aircraft, sweep the sky for wildlife. Try to get out a Pirep if you have an airborne encounter. 🤣
KFC 200 A/P. The switch on the button panel (KC-290) is held by an electromagnet in engaged position. There is a little piece of steel in that switch that sometimes dislodges and consequently the rocker switch will not stay latched ON. I would check this first as it may be a likely culprit (assuming that the A/P passes self-test with 4-5 blinks and beeps).
Beautiful scenery! I'm enjoying this as much as the 210 trip over Greenland to Europe, if you get near southwestern Pa or Palm Beach county, Florida look us up!
OMG an autopilot failure LOL I dunno aviation has turned into a soy boy game I guess, retired old grumpy pilot here (55) years accident incident free, flown trips many times back in the 70's with inop autopilots on heavies, for us old timers it was no big deal and some of the older guys I knew (WW2 Guys) would comment when I told them we had an inop placarded autopilot "no big deal at least they are not shooting at us"
thoroughly enjoy your channel. when I was in 12th grade I took the class room portion but never made it to the actual in seat pilot training and really wish I had.
Another excellent video and adventure Matt -- you do great work and your episodes are both educational as well as great fun to watch! Can you elaborate on the $1000 piece of FAA certified plastic over the gear handle? Guess I have to re-watch and/or do some online research on the Bo. I own a Piper Warrior but hope to step up to an A36 someday!
Your bird makes my kidneys hurt. Flew an A-35 with 9 hours of fuel onboard. No auto pilot. E-185 Continental. But alas, I was a lot younger. Now a 30 minute flight requires a pee alternate.
OMG 3 hours without an autopilot. I feel for you. I know what it's like to fly over 8000 hours without an autopilot. A terrible, terrible thing to have to put up with.
honestly, I don't feel bad for him, flying an adventure and having to fly his own plane for 3 hours without an auto pilot... sorry, no getting any pity from me, I'd love to be in that situation.
I usually try to post on Patreon in advance, then somewhat real-time on my Instagram story. But the exact timing on this one ended up being a bit last minute to figure out when it fit between work projects.
I remember doing my twin rating. While waiting to enter the runway, my instructor was going through engine failures during taxi, roll and take off, etc. He said “if we lose an engine now, we abort the flight. Strange how single pilots would still take off on one motor”.
Great vids and next time video Rachael petting the teddy bear :) Grizzlies it isn't stand your ground play dead. It's their ground not yours. Last I knew playing dead is a heck of a way to end up dead. Realistic nongovernment advice for Grizzly's any Alaskan living around grizzly's will tell you is have a big bore gun saving the last shot for yourself.
You're MIT material, but for people who can't afford a Bonanza 36 and the time and fuel to traverse the world, it's still possible to get into MIT -- I did it ('90) and all my daddy gave me was advice to "get as much as you can when you're still young."
The solution to your wildlife encounter is "a Rifle". I work in the bush of the Yukon and we do not have much problem with wildlife such as grizzlies and Moose, but a gun is the best defense to these animals. Obviously being prepared and knowing how these animals react is also key.
Hey Matt, Is that a KFC200 autopilot with a KC-295 flight computer in the back ?? I had same issues in my Mooney with my autopilot, that started to disengage every 3 minutes in the beginning - until it finally never engaged at all. :( My solution was to buy an old (pre owned) KC-295 flight computer on Ebay - take out all configurable boards from my existing autopilot, and install these in the new (pre owned) autopilot - Thereby replacing the motherboard of the KC-295 flight computer. Worked fine after that. :) Let me know if you need details... And by the way.... Great video as always !!!!
I would have thought the weather would be more savage up there at this point. Do you have a strategy for engine failure over wooded mountainous terrain?
Actually one of the things that didn’t quite make the final cut - but yes, in short anywhere there are mountains there are also valleys and lakes and such to land in.
@@mattguthmiller I was guessing something like that but does it always hold true. And does it work in zero visibility. Looks like you have synthetic vision computer. Can you glide by that?

That is a remarkable truth.
Freshest bear poop I ever came across was steaming, and the flies hadn't shown up yet. I turned around at that point.
Lololololol
Or keep a bell on your 45-70.
Smooth
What an adventure! Thanks for taking us along on this trip, Matt!

Glad you could experience some Canadian hospitality while under way. Good choice to divert and regroup for the next day. Cheers from Winnipeg.
