@@gewglesux No doubt it is probably a well cared for aircraft. The problem is, most catastrophic engine failures are from something that cannot be inspected. It may be 15 years since the last time humans laid eyes on the bearings inside the crank, or the lifters (which are notorious for corrosion issues in the big bore continentals). If a bearing spun and cut off oil to a connecting rod, it is going the throw a rod through the side of the engine. It is rare, but it does happen. I honestly don't think I would even fly a SETP over such hostile terrain. Forget the temp of the water, the wave action out there can be so high, that I would give them minimal chance of actually getting out of the airplane alive. Scary stuff...
The "panels" at 16:24 are for preventing gravel from picking up during start/coming out of feather! Best to park with your prop positioned over one of them :)
I just found your channel last night and I’ve spent the last 2 nights binge watching. I flew in the 80’s(yes, I’m that old) until I scared the snot out of myself working in the pattern on a really windy day. If I had balls like yours I’d still be flying. Great flying and great videos. Fly safe.
Keep the vids coming! Your filming is some of, if not the best on YT when it comes to aviation related content. The flying over Greenland and Iceland got me hooked on this channel and this AK trip is just as good.
9:36... Not sure what was on that dinner plate but it wins the award for appearing to be the healthiest "looking" dish of food I've seen on this channel in recent memory.
Pic proficiency with mastery in and between flight rules is so addictive. Difficult to image accomplishing 5 years of it. This production filled some blanks I've had regarding these passes. Thanks for sharing.
Brings back memories, my first 44 hours in Fairbanks, winter of ‘96. Failed my check ride at -30F for not identifying suspicious liquid on the windscreen... Figured it was from the snow we brushed off earlier, turned out to be a loose fuel line. Went back home to Hilo a few days later in mid December to finish up my license in less stable air.
Matt, I'd like to thank u young man, for what u provide for so many , who for whatever circumstances don't allow for personal adventures, have not the means or ability to fly, yet love flying very much many as myself are able to feel we are along for the ride. John Shelnutt, Prattville Alabama USA
Hi Matt after the 17:00' mark, did you guys have to circle back to pick up the camera operator? Serious props (pardon the pun) for doing that. I'm an airline captain in a very structured environment so I really appreciated the reminders by you on how awesome aviation is. Love the channel!
A few of your stops brought back some memories I built the runway Barrow I also redone the runway in Bettles as well as constructed the float pond that you saw as you were leaving Bettles. I grew up just across the river from talkeetna little spot called trapper Creek almost 40 years there. Thanks for the memories 😊 🛫✈️
Thanks so much tor the flight Matt! For someone who spent 15 years, mostly on the North Slope and a lot of hours in Bonanzas that was a bit of sublime joy.
I have passively followed your aviation journey since you did the big flight when you were 19 in your solo circumnavigation around the world. I enjoy your channel and traveling "with you."
When I was learning to fly in the early 90's, one of my dreams was to fly Alaska. I never made it. I am really loving the tour. Though, not so sure about the trip to Russia.
7:07 it's interesting to see you had such good GPS coverage so far north ( >12 satellites) as the orbital planes are generally inclined at ~55degrees, so I sort of expected them to have thinned-out a bit more. The orbital height obviously helps extend their operating horizon more than I'd expected. Looks like good cross-cut angles too. (from a user who's never been that far north!).
Matt you could have given a little history on Will Rogers and Wiley Post. Especially the significant aviation history of Wiley Post. All with only one eye! Both perished in a crash at Point Barrow in 1935. Great video series.
I don’t know why some people give you a 👎. I think the channel is great and enjoy every one of them and so here’s to you 👍. Se you on the next flight.🛩
You guys have never heard of the great alaska pipeline? It is pretty much what drives this places economy. That pipeline is regularly maintained and is really important for thousands, if not all, alaskans.
Nice video. Some amazing desolate terrain. That crackle you hear on reception is a plug lead arcing. Verify it by changing the rpm and listen for it to change also. I had the same thing in my RV6 and replaced the ignition harness which fixed the problem. The engine ran smoother too.
John Dill Can you say more? The crackle seemed to be present only on the ATC transmissions (aircraft receive). Would it be audible on the intercom/radio or only on the camera recording? I don't link my camera into the audio loop - should I be doing so as a diagnostic tool or would I hear it first hand anyway?
Gavin Ward the arcing causes RF interference in the VFH radio frequencies. It is a distinct crackle or snap as you listen to ATC. Very common with worn ignition wires.
I was just going to post a similar comment. The high-tension side of the ignition system (Magneto-cap, Spark-Plug Wires, Spark Plugs) is breaking down, somewhere. It will be most noticeable first when receiving weak radio stations, but will gradually grow more prominent, as the failure worsens.
This is amazing. Always been my dream to get a plane and fly around the country. I hope someday soon I can! Thanks for the awesome trips you share with us!!
Hi Matt. I finally started taking steps to make my childhood dream of flying around the world come true. I’d love to speak with someone that can answer questions around fund raising, planning etc. Not many exist that have done this before 😄
Just found your channel and binge watching loads of them, I am from the uk and just about to start my private pilots licence hope to have as many adventures as you keep them coming 👍👍
really nice video. i still worry about you but i joined the patreon because of the cool stuff you are sharing and the quality of the share. tried to join the last time you had a live feed but wasn't able. looking forward to the next.
I'm not sure when or what the involvement will be but sometime in 2020 the company I work for will have some ownership in TAPS (Trans Alaska Pipeline System). I don't expect to spend any time there but it was cool to see it.
Awesome dude thank you for sharing an awesome video that is so cool flying and exploring the world our beautiful planet Earth... enjoy your videos and your world flight...
I was in Bettles Nov 3rd to see the Aroura Borealis. I stood on that runway at 2:00 a.m and -15 degree to take pictures. So strange to see it on your video!
Bubba you're really rolling the dice flying in some of this weather without known ice or even deicing equipment. Even impact snow can shut a bonanza engine down.
Not even remotely. Why do you think we didn’t want to fly at 13,000ft? Maybe watch again paying closer attention to temps / discussion. I also hear Sporty’s has a good new weather course with a great video on dealing with icing: Sportys.com/weather 😉
watching your landing, looks like your control yoke column is moving all around. it may just be the video but if its loose I replaced the 3 rollers myself and made a world of difference. very easy owner project. let me know if you need the part numbers.
Marriage Log entry #314 - Matt and bro-friend are wearing full immersion survival suits and life jackets, girlfriend is wearing what looks like cotton sweater and airline passenger life jacket. HANG ON ROSE!
I see you fly into Boston a lot. Would you ever fly into Northampton MA which is on the western end of Mass.? If so, I live like 12 minutes from the airport, would you fly me around my area and vlog it? I have only flown commercial flights, never in a smaller aircraft. Would love the opportunity to experience that! ! Hope all is well !
Keep up the great videos. I lived in the Fairbanks area for about 5 years this video brought back a lot of good memories. Just a little curious how many hours does 7HP have on it?
Hi Matt, can you help me out with a question? how long with it take to fly on a Cessna 172 or the bonanza you own, from Las Vegas to LA, from the point you meet your plane to the point when you park the plane. also how can i find out how much roughly will it coast me the flight if i wanna take off from an airport in las vegas and land in Burbank airport or lax airport? Thank you for your time
This guy trust his Continental engine more than I've ever trusted anything in my entire life...
Hhahahahaha
Oh I enjoy the Vids but I cringe man. Hard night IFR, open water, rough terrain... Ballsy for sure. I am a fair-weather flyer lol
It's amazing that Bonanza can lift such a giant pair of balls.
I have a feeling that this plane get more attention and Maintenance than most...

Appreciate the time and effort put into this series.
Brother and sister flying together. Good times.

The life preserver says "Adult Child". I probably need one of those.
That was funny!!!!
So crazy, Josh from aviation101 went to those same airports and spoke to the same guy with the dogs in Bettles. Pretty wild. Such a cool place.
9:36... Not sure what was on that dinner plate but it wins the award for appearing to be the healthiest "looking" dish of food I've seen on this channel in recent memory.
I love this series. Thanks for making such great content!
Man, Papa Hotel, and Hotel Bravo within a few minutes.

Got a new quarantine drinking game, every time Matt says cool you have to take a shot or a beer chug, someone help me up off of the floor...

This ranks up among some of your most beautiful flights. Thanks for the great video.
I'm always blown away by your professionalism. Thanks for taking us with you.
Great single engine flying out in nowhere land, remote desolate but beautiful landscapes.
Can’t get enough of it looking forward to the next one.

what do you fly?
I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if somewhat at the airport filmed his takeoff for him and emailed it to him.
Yes, and his gf .... no one in bonanza except himself.

im studying my IFR written now...i have so much respect for the knowledge you have.

Glad that Y'all landed safely in Fairbanks , Alaska .
Great cinematography. Nice landings! Thanks Matt!
My favourite part of the serie. Great job! I would really love to fly there!

Jeez Matt - what a place to fly..! Awesome Brother..! Greets from London.
awesome, Im really liking these Alaska videos, just really cool stuff!
You are living the dream... so jealous but so in love with these vids in 4k!
Hi Matt. I finally started taking steps to make my childhood dream of flying around the world come true. I’d love to speak with someone that can answer questions around fund raising, planning etc. Not many exist that have done this before 😄
That was really beautiful, thank you!
Good video....thank's..... and nice greetings from germany 😊
I admire you Matt and co. Reminds me of myself in the 1970s. But we didn’t have the technology for sure.
["Thank you Matt and crew, love your video's, always interesting, so thanks for the recordings and the uploads."]
Beautiful desolation. Enjoyed the video and following your progress.
... or to quote the Man on the Moon: "Magnificent Desolation!"
Good film action, through the entire program. Amazing footage of natural vistas.
PABR: Its a snow fence. Helps with snow drifts downwind of it.
Just found your channel and binge watching loads of them, I am from the uk and just about to start my private pilots licence hope to have as many adventures as you keep them coming 👍👍
This flight beats the Heck out of the stressful fight to Russia!
Matt's videos consist of: somewhere cold
Getting confused about something ATC says
Food, and lots of snacks
It was worth subscribed your channel. Great vid and all series :D all the best!

Your videos make me want so badly to go to flight school. Just need to come up with the money.
Also tell Owen he's very handsome.
This needed a Polar Bear Swim!
“We could run a war from here, until we run outta snacks.” Haha.
Keep up the great videos. I lived in the Fairbanks area for about 5 years this video brought back a lot of good memories. Just a little curious how many hours does 7HP have on it?
Love the Navaid at 10:18!
Matt like shipping can be tracked and discribed is it possilbe to track where your plane is just asking andthank you for posting very enjoyable watch.
Matt, you were IFR from Barrow to Fairbanks...i.e. “I Follow Rivers”.
Matt-Force One?
Great video , saw those airports on aviation 101 he did a similar trip 👍
Who recorded the takeoff from Barrow?
Hey Matt your a So. Dak. Boy ! You know the drill. This is right up your alley. Later ! 😎💨
Great video! What month was this filmed? As it seems quite mild and the surrounding are green..
Thank you for a great program . At least we're not in Russia
Damn! You make it look sooooooo easy. LOL!
