Yes and no. Benzoate does not change the odor. When Its actively decomposing the bacteria is bubbling releasing c02 carrying the odor. There is pressure to it. Just like fermenting wine. When you add Benzoate it stops the bacteria producing the gasses. 2-3 days later you don't smell it any more. Guess I should change my words better. Is just like making wine. The whole room smells add the Campden tablets smell goes away. Its about it gassing off. Benzoate stops the gases so you don't smell it as strong but it does not change the odor just how strong it is.
An excelllent lure is to let any meat, chicken, fish, pork, deer, ect rot down to the point of being liquid. After a few months of being in the hot summer sun strain out the solids so you get just the liquid. This liquid is your lure base, add whatever scent to it you like. Same thing can be done by burying it underground in a jar.
Pit that gator oil in after it has stopped working....preserve it them put ur gator oil in....aging it in meat when it is breaking down will change the gator oil oder

I have a different philosophy than most. I use a deep dirt hole. I fill the hole. I don't tease them with a table spoon of bait. I fill the hole. Thats why I have to make it. alot of yotes diet is road kill deer. thats something they are used to eating. Thats why I always use deer as my base. Most commercial baits that I know use horse meat. I don't buy commercial bait. I don't think there is a magical bait. They are just marketing to sell it.
Most bait makers use horse meat. In KY thats illegal. Elk and deer is all I got. I would prefer beaver or bobcat but don't have any. Usually use deer because thats what they are used to eating

SOmething with fatty acids. Base is deer. touch of mice and gator oil. Might add bacon grease or chicken. Who doesn't like bacon right?
