During the 1987 Tour de France, as a 14-year-old, I walked into I Martin Bicycles in Los Angeles. They had about 20 Carrera Battaglins. I felt I was in heaven. No way I could afford one. Great memories. I turned 51 today. I never thought those days would ever end.
As a young fella in the 80s you were either in the Kelly camp or Roche camp. I was a Seán Kelly man but in hindsight should have appreciated Roche more. 86-88 Roche was on fire. Also the camaraderie in the peloton with Robert Millar who dragged them both up some big climbs. Great video. Thanks 👍
Great video as always Dan. Fantastic stories. One small detail,Battaglin is pronounced Batta- leen , As always looking forward to your next videos which I find to be one of the best cycling videos on the net All the best!
Actually it's not quite Batta-leen. The Italian 'gli' is really difficult for English speakers. It's also really difficult to try and spell it phonetically in English. I think you just need to hear an Italian speaker say it. Sorry, pedantic idiocy on my part. I'm an Italian speaking Welshman.....
Fantastic channel, love it. Just found it through the pantani climb on GCN would have the Bianchi over that pinerello anyday of the week! Keep up the good work
I was amazed at how close the times were in the GCN Pantani video - if we`d have risked the Electron fly weight climbing wheels with fresh Veloflex on, might have been an upset of a result... Dan
As a junior rider in the 80’s… a couple of the wiley club vets built up the battaglin, and dawned the carrera kit like yrself, and Stephen Roche great bike, good times! ✌️😉👚 …campy downtube shifters🙏
bit of a wild west back then - though not that long ago Mark Cavendish had urine thrown in his face on a stage at the Tour de France so fans can still go too far, Dan
Enjoyed this Dan. I knew about the hostile Italian crowds in the 70s, but didn't realize it was still going on in 87. I do like you gasses though, what are they?
The fans were really whipped up by the Italian media but even so were quite something. Shades are an older Ray Ban that kind of suit the `80`s look, Dan
@@vintagevelos9517 Yes you did just at the end drinking coffee, sorry i missed it, but you don't mention the weights of the other bikes at all. Its amazing the strength and power these riders had, example Steven Roche riding a 21 pound bike. Today riders have ultra light bikes and dont seem to be going that much faster. Any plans to review a Tomasini Tecno race bike?. Thanks.
Its a bike thats built to channel power rather than be a fly weight - would not have wanted to be Roche going head to head with Delgado... Dan @@taichihead42
Opening up that old can of worms re the '87 Giro. Roche did an Hinault-esque job in attacking his team mate, Carrera should have just let him ride himself into the ground, whilst Visentini in cracking only let himself down. That said, Visentini retains the respect of his peers to this day, not so sure the same can be said of Roche.
I`m suprised that Boifava (director sportive at Carrera) didn`t drive him off the orad, happened a lot back then - think Lucian Van Imp having Cyril Guimard driving at him when he won the tour - attack or I drive into you... Dan
Might be - there`s no frame material sticker and I couldn`t see any rifling but thats not to say there isn`t any, defaulted to SL but could well be SLX, Dan
@@vintagevelos9517 All the legible frame stickers from Roche's bikes from the time said SLX. It was the Columbus response to Reynolds 753 steel, and better than SL.

Sounds like you need a belated 50th present to yourself... Dan
Holy Grail bike for me... love how you are just blowing past people on the road. Guido would be proud... love the videos.. keep them coming.
Yep, its a stunning bike to ride and look at - I`d say it looks better in the flesh, Dan

Nice review Dan, I still remember the Roche / Visentini drama well to this day. Tango seemed to be enjoying himself during the intro!

Good to hear someone talking some sense about Delta brakes for once 👍
Yep, you can`t really comment unless you`ve ridden them, Dan
Stephen Roche was and still is the ultimate stylist on the bike…so smooth. Tango has fine taste in bicycle groupsets.
Hi sure does... would have been fascinating to see Roches palmares if he had not had the knee problems, Dan
Great ride Dan Roche was a real racer in a very competitive era…
Quite the bike and the story and the telling captured my attention.
I should have maybe done the story on a flat - the climb was starting to catch up on me... Dan
Thanks for posting
Great video and history. I remember the epic ride by Roche in the TDF that year.

Its an iconic, classy look, still awesome today, Dan
simply beautiful!
It really is - still available as new frameset from Battaglin and i can see why, Dan
Fascinating history, to ride to win against such hostility!

I wish you could find a gazelle AA-special my favourite bike that I ever raced on lovely blue colour I wish I’d kept it ☹️
There`s a lot of bikes out there, given time who knows, have heard good things about Gazelles but never ridden one, Dan.
Very nice. Just used the video to help set up my deltas. Interesting you ride euro brakes set up ?
Yep, Euro brake cable set up for me - all the ex team bikes are set up like it when I get hold of them so just got used to it that way, Dan
Understood . Amazing the bikes you manage to get hold of , waiting to see a big mig pinarello/ pegoretti as he is about your size..
@@spacemanonemillion2500 Hmm... Indurains bikes are just out of my reach, hence settling for the Banesto Pinarello of Jimenez, Dan

Could you please tell us the weight of the bike. This is always left out of videos.
