Potholes - Grrrrr!!!! Discuss...
Potholes - ok, in the UK we do like to moan about them but seriously, they are just sooooo bad right now !
Encouraged by a buddy of mine who was visiting the country and was shocked by what he saw, I figured it was time to tackle the pothole issue head on - though not by riding into one again...
A little research was done, authorities proved impossible to contact so they remain as faceless as ever and then out onto the roads to check out a few of the finest examples of potholes - and not technically potholes - in the the areas I ride often - and you don`t have to go far!

Did the pro`s cheat/dope at the `24 Tour de France???

Did the pro`s cheat at this years 2024 Tour de France? Lets be honest, doping and cheating allegations go on at every Tour de France - its often a hot topic - but after Pantani`s record got smashed by Pogacar, Vinregaard and Remco by some margin I can understand why the question is super hot this year... How is it possible for a rider like Pogacar - as exceptional as he is - to be faster than P...

100k on a 100 year old bike - sounds easy (ish) but can be a bit more of a challenge in reality... With L`Eroica 2024 just around the corner we thought it was time to put the antique Russ English 3 speed we`ve prepped for L`Eroica through a serious test, 100k, and boy did it need it - very early on the 3 speed K hub became a two speed that jumped around and dumped the chain alarmingly regulary ...

Hell yes, though both are Columbus steel framed bikes, the `88 is SL and has a much more traditional feel complete with its Campagnolo 7 speed C record groupset, where as the `89 C...

I came off my bike a couple of months ago thanks to a pothole (50cm x 70cm with a depth of 7cm) - I didn't spot it in the shadows, it ripped my handlebars to the right and I was thrown off the bike. The result was a lot of road rash, all the skin taken off one elbow, hand and wrist injuries, a damaged helmet, torn jersey, and various bits of damage to my bike - I claimed on my bike insurance, the total bill for the helmet/jersey/bike was over £2500. I could have claimed against the council and gone further with my personal injuries, to be honest I was just happy that they carried out a repair and then a resurface of the section of road.

Living in central Texas, I am only about 10 minutes away from well-maintained farm-to-market roads with decent shoulders and light traffic. However, as more people move to the countryside and nearby towns, traffic can get busy at certain times. When I need to, I am flexible and adjust my rides accordingly. The roads though, are generally very nice and you really can't beat Texas weather, especially during the winter when Northerners are all buddled up, dealing with freezing weather and I am out on my bike wearing the same bibs I do during the summer. Other times, I am out and about, driving those same roads on my highly modified (i.e., stiff suspension) 2012 MINI Cooper JCW, enjoying the drive. Life is good!

It's getting to the stage where you can't ride a road bike on UK roads in some areas. In the winter especially I put the road bikes away - definitely needs something sturdier with chunky tyres! Unless you want a potentially dangerous peril-avoidance challenge it's just not safe. Want to fix them: 1) have more businesses around the area these roads are 2) slow traffic down 3) increase infrastructure spending All of this needs political action. Best of luck

I’ve often thought that blanket hatred of cyclists has become socially acceptable in certain circles. There are definite parallels with racism and other forms of bigotry. It’s almost as if some people need a target for their hate. Recently, I was on a train and overheard two retired men talking loudly about how they deliberately nudged a cyclist with their car bumper. Apparently, she was going too slow with her shopping when riding along the high street.

I still ride a DeRosa from the same period, 1984. Yes, it rides best, hard and fast. It never gives up road feel, but is comfortable over a 100 mile ride, the genius of DeRosa. I attribute it to steep geometry front and rear, 74, 73.5, investment cast lugs, and long top tube, 55cm on a 54cm seat tube. it climbs like a bandit and descends like a motorcycle. No other bike I've ridden rides the same. 75,000 mies, still going strong.

when I looked at ALL of Lance's previous TdF results long BEFORE he was busted and quit racing - almost the entire Top 25 of each TdF he WON was populated by DOPERS who had been caught - that meant that a CLEAN Lance was somehow defeating guys who were doped to the gills - does that make logical sense ? - NO - no matter at the time guys like Phil Liggett were defending him and the rest of the media as well - Pantani and his unique climbing style in the drops - was a phenomenal talent WITHOUT doping but he did indeed DOPE heavily - I personally think this occurred AFTER his horrific head-on collision with a wayward car on the race course that broke nearly every bone in his body - regardless - his blood hematocrit was hyper elevated - over 60% at times if I recall - he was being woken up by a heart rate monitor in the middle of the night and had to climb on his indoor trainer for half an hour to circulate his THICK blood or risk heart attack - that is what killed many doped riders - so to think that a CLEAN TdF rider aka Pog-a-Bike - would SMASH Pantani record seems as plausible as the Lance argument back in the day - you already have the EVIL DOCTOR and his ZONE 2 training plan to try to dupe people - like YOU for instance - into believing it is all natural - recall the Carmichael Plan used by Lance - and high cadence climbing technique - that GURU Doctor always seems to be sniffing around DOPED riders - sure today's bike's are more advanced but the weight still has to meet UCI limits - stiffer frames - you are grabbing at straws - body weight - blah blah blah - when you find yourself working HARD to find excuses you are being suckered - AGAIN - reminds me of the "I have never failed a doping test" comments - you will yourself to believe the rumours and EVIDENCE just can't be true - all the Lance Fan BOYS did the same and shouted down anyone who disagreed - if it wals like a duck - quacks like ducks - yellow like duck it is NOT a Buffalo - THAT s what you are arguing for - he did not just beat the Pantani record he SMASHED IT - does that make LOGICAL SENSE ? - NO !!! - and guys like you who come one here to reassure YOURSELF are showing just how DESPARATE you are - how much you want to BELIEVE he is clean ... dude he is almost certainly DOPED - HATE TO BUST YOUR HERO BUBBLE - the REAL road cycling heroes are the nobody's who wake up at 5:00AM and ride for 4-5 hours without a pay check fans or media

All of Asia ride these with great groupsets. Honestly can't justify the massive difference in the real deal.... But lots of friends have no issues with these. Put 1000ks on these, and not a thing. Supply and demand.....lol. probably made from the same factory ...

As a former sports journo who has followed doping in cycling/ triathlon I am sorry to inform you but whatever UAE are doing, doing it they are. We have a team of former dopers running the squad (Gianetti) and its lab rat Poggy. I find the spectacle rather disconcerting in the difference in performance between the UAE rider and the rest. I think your arguements of tech, diet and other factors weak (sorry) human physiology doesn't change, if you put up a juiced up Pantani on a new Bianchi he'd be no worse off than what he did 25 years ago. Unless you know how it works (paid doctors/supplements not sanctioned) then romantic notions of modern era cycling as advanced doesn't cut it.

T think calling Tadey a lab rat is a bit low for a journalist - how do you feel about the likes of Geraint Thomas? Some similar results but as clean a rider as I can think of, Dan

you mentioned some aspects correctly. And then there are totally different team tactics today. Watch videos of bike races 40 or 30 or even 20 years ago, the GC guys rode much greater parts of the stages on their own, without teammates - and the stages where much longer! On a mountain stage (of ~250 km) they attacked each other at least the last two climbs (while having burned excessive amounts of carbs before). Today they ride in the slipstream of their domestiques until 3 - 5 km to the finish, "burning" one domestique after the other and then go the last km's with carb stores almost full. And when the stage is over the recovery program starts - lots of things riders never have heard of back in the days. If Pogacar or Vingegaard would have ridden the tempo they did with the preparation and under the conditions of 1990 or 2000 they would have bonked half way through the first hard stage. Cycling back than for todays athletes would look like absolute amateurs style

well if you think one can put 7 watt/kg for 40 minutes at the end of the tour, and look like he did a weekend group ride 5 minutes after just by eating training and sleeping well, then no they didn't...
