Emperor is one of my favorite bands; their Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is my favorite album of all time. I would recommend checking out Inno a Satana too, which was ironically inspired by classical music even though it's very dark and evil; it's probably my favorite song of all time.
The 'lack of structure' is a common thing in both Black Metal and Death Metal. Both genres have a tendency to break or ignore rules in music. For example, when it comes to lyrics it's relatively rare to see songs using the standard verse and chorus structure. There's pretty much only one rule they are virtually guaranteed to follow: only use minor scales.
I would say it's not that it doesn't have structure, it just has a structure that's not typical for rock. It's more a development of themes, like prog or classical
Ye Entrancemperium from Anthems next? Emperor lads are actually very talented players and the mix was done on purpose to give it a cold vibe, which it sure delivers.
Ahhh the almighty Emperor, you gotta check out any of their live stuff, it's the old songs with an amazing live production and since most of Emperor (Ihsahn especially) are peerless in their playing it makes for an enthralling experience
More black metal to add to the list * Marduk - souls for Belial * Taake - myr (the solo will literally blow your mind) * Satanic Warmaster - The Vampiric Tyrant * immortal - all shall fall * behemoth - blow your trumpets Gabriel * gorgoroth - incipit satan * batushka - exercises in futility iv (edit: band is actually Mgla, my metal fail moment 🖤) * waitan - outlaw There’s way heaps that many others have also suggested as next next BM listens. Thank you for taking my request. If you want more trve kvlt black metal listen to Dunkelheit by Burzum. The man behind this band stabbed his friend to death and burned down multiple churches in Norway in the 90s and even used a picture of the remains of the burnt church as an album cover for his ep Aske. Many of the people in the Norwegian black metal scene did similar crimes in the 90s to avenge their pagan ancestors.
Finally you’d a black metal band, the vocals were pretty much like this in the early days, check out Bathory(the pioneer of this genre) Mayhem/Darkthrone/Burzum.
Burzum - Dunkelheit or Det Som Engang Var (very long song but you would love it) Dark Funeral - The Secrets of The Black Arts Mayhem - Funeral Fog Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger; Kathaarian Life Code or Hans Siste Vinter.
Cool story! They are fun to read. Mine, i bought it back in 94’ish?? I had been into the earache scene in high school. Anyway im about 20 years old and we are going on a 7 day Caribbean cruise. It was a ship full of mostly old people, so at night the top decks were all but empty and all yours… listening over and over this at night, on the ocean, under the star’s??? Sneek a hit of bud and wow!!! This album was soooo killer! Still is \,,/
Now that you've dipped your toes in some "trv" old-school BM, highly recommend you check out some OLD Dimmu Borgir as well - like something from For All Tid, Stormblast or, their best album IMO, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (Mourning Palace remains a huge staple!)
Now can you please do some of these: Dissection - Maha Kali Dissection - Where the dead angels lie (Bodom after midnight covered this too!) Satyricon - Mother North Dark Funeral - My Funeral Impaled Nazarene - Armageddon death squad Dimmu Borgir - Mourning palace Dimmu Borgir - The serpentine offering Cradle of filth - From the cradle to enslave Or do all! You are gonna like these, I know that.
Dissection - Where Dead Angels Lie. Its one of my favourite black metal songs also Bodom After Midnight have made cover of it its Alexi Laiho last project before he died
Some favorites of mine to check out. Marduk - still fucking dead Bathory - in conspiracy with satan Mayhem - chainsaw gutsfuck Dark funeral - to carve another wound Mayhem - freezing moon The list goes on and on forever but these are definitely ones to check out 😁
Emperor expanded and grew with each successive new album. Their previous EP was self titled and on a split with Enslaved that featured a much more scooped out mid range and therefore "less noisy" but still chaotic. Their first demo release was not even stereo and most likely recorded on a 4 track cassette. In The Nightside Eclipse rerecorded two songs of which was less scooped, raw and noisier. Their follow up album had perfected and tweeked their guitar tones with a more defined heavy distortion that was more capable of delivering its lead guitars and rhythm guitars with more decipherable precision of which they kept improving upon with each new album. The whole band perfected their performance as they channelled sounds of fast chaos as complex guitar rhythm chord progressions not heard before so it only sounds chaotic to new listeners. Perform the riffs unplugged yourself and hear the perfect complexity of entertwining notes and chord progressions. Ihsahn set the bar for technical/progressive blackmetal to which many others came afterwards. They were once my favorite band, but now there are nearly millions of songs available to choose from and so I have many dozens of favorite metal bands across many dozens of metal genres.
You can give a try to "Dissection" with The Somberlain, Where Dead Angels Lie, both live at Wacken or In The Cold Winds of Nowhere studio or live version. It could great reactions
This is one of the "True Norwegian Black Metal" pioneers. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with what you said about the production. It was roughly produced very much on purpose to encompass the passion and brutality of black metal. It's meant to make people uncomfortable, using a lot of tritones (the devil's notes...look that up, pretty interesting stuff) and demonic sounding vocals. I love Emperor. You should check out Ihsahn's (lead singer) solo work. I recommend something off his latest album. You'll be shocked, lol.
BM is an absolutely addictive type of music. I quit metal quite a few years ago, but when it comes to hearing metal, it's still BM. By the way - Emperor is great.
@metalpit1000 I quit listening to newer metal. I mainly listen to old school. For me, it will always be death metal as my favorite. Then black metal comes in second.
In that album there is a song called A Fine day to die, a remast version of the original by Bathory... Man listen to the guitar solo at 6:30..its just INSANE !!!
Awesome reaction! Second wave BM is surely one of the most creative phases in metal history( the earlier years)..Now you can begin with 1)Where Dead Angels lie Or Night's blood by Dissection( you'll get comparatively good production quality here) 2) Dunkelheit by Burzum 3)Freezing Moon or De Mysteris Dom Sathanas by Mayhem 4) Quintessence by Darkthrone 5(Mother North by Satyricon 6) Capitel 1( Bergtatt album) by Ulver You can start listening to neofolk/darkfolk albums too.. You definitely do not want to miss them in your life time: To begin with: 1) Kveldssanger by Ulver 2) Forlatt by Vali( one of the most beautiful albums ever created)
You need to listen to black metal as a whole album. Dissection, Dark Throne, Mayhem, Emperor, Burzum, Impaled Nazarene, and others. I'll be 55 this year and this is the music I listened to in my 20s. Not many friends enjoyed my taste in music.
Check out some Belphegor 👌 The mix is much more modern and refined. "In Blood- Devour This Sanctity" OR "Spell of Reflection" Actually, treat yourself to both. By the way yes a lot of old black metal WAS recorded and mixed in a dusty ass attic...with a handheld tape recorder...😂
I am familiar with the band and song. There's tons of other black metal out there, especially from Norway. There's Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Darkthrone...there's quite a bit. If you wanna check out some early stuff that's also thrashy, check out Venom.
Much better are the songs Al Svartr/Ye Entrancemperium or With strength I burn by Emperor. Or you can take a chance on two Cradle of Filth's videos from the 90s - From enslavement to the grave and Born in a burial gown. These two are the best videos for me from the 90s, but uncensored versions preferably. :) And check out Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the great apocalypse, live on stage with Norwegian philharmonic orchestra and a quire.
Totally bad ass song. The scream at the beginning and that hypnotic riff mixed in and riding on top of the song. The vocals were buried on purpose and for effect,so evil and attractive.
Emperor, ONE of the best bands I have ever seen live !!! Saw them at Bloodstock 14 in the UK and they played this entire album live, was an anniversary of the record.
You’re listening to one of the - zero exaggeration - greatest BM albums of all time. In the Nightside Eclipse is a masterpiece. This goes beyond just how musically masterful it is. You have to have been around in the scene in ‘93/‘94 to appreciate how much this influenced the scene and moved it forward.

Emperor is one of my favorite bands; their Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is my favorite album of all time. I would recommend checking out Inno a Satana too, which was ironically inspired by classical music even though it's very dark and evil; it's probably my favorite song of all time.
I second that!
Fax!
"not the best quality" "it lacks structure" - yes, both of these are basic requirements for old school black metal
Emperor has been my favourite band since I heard "Anthems to the welkin at dusk" in the late 90's
You can't say you listened to Black Metal until you listen to Freezing Moon by Mayhem
I please my hunger on living humans
Ye Entrancemperium from Anthems next? Emperor lads are actually very talented players and the mix was done on purpose to give it a cold vibe, which it sure delivers.
Only if he does the first 2 tracks back to back to warm up to the song
@@zoso219 the only way to listen to Ye Entracemperium
Your "annoyance" is actually mostly wanted in Black Metal, just a Black metal thing
Ahhh the almighty Emperor, you gotta check out any of their live stuff, it's the old songs with an amazing live production and since most of Emperor (Ihsahn especially) are peerless in their playing it makes for an enthralling experience
More black metal to add to the list
* Marduk - souls for Belial
* Taake - myr (the solo will literally blow your mind)
* Satanic Warmaster - The Vampiric Tyrant
* immortal - all shall fall
* behemoth - blow your trumpets Gabriel
* gorgoroth - incipit satan
* batushka - exercises in futility iv (edit: band is actually Mgla, my metal fail moment 🖤)
* waitan - outlaw
There’s way heaps that many others have also suggested as next next BM listens. This is a ‘add to the list’ ✌️
There’s also some cool stuff like:
* wolves in the throne room - I Will Lay Down My Bones Among The Rocks And Stones
* Dzo-Nga - anything from ‘the sachems tales’ album
* walknut - The Midnightforest of the Runes
* impaled Nazarene - goatized
* Bathory - enter the eternal fire (classic BM)
* emperor - with strength I burn
... and heaps more.
batushka - exercises in futility iv ? You rly ? :D
@@KORNBG oh crap. I meant Mgla!! Metal fail 🖤
listened to TAAKE after i got high,,, have never been the same.
@@JosephSaintClair all good ,mate ^^
@@MrAvalon82 imagine doing this and listen to Burzum - Filosofem full album,or the ambient ones... u'll see a different world -trust me.
you've got to go to a black metal concert. It's amazing to see these bands live!
Next black metal reaction should be "Gorgoroth - Sign of an open eye"
Way more black metal is waiting for you!
Live version too
@@zoso219 absolutly
Would be funny seeing his reaction to “carving a giant”, although the self title song ‘Gorgoroth’ or ‘Incipit Satan’ would be insane to see a react to
@@JosephSaintClair yeah "carving a giant" would be also a great reaction! One of my favourite songs. I hope he will react to gorgoroth in the future, we will see!
Wound Upon Wound
I've seen Emperor live twice now...
First time in 2019...Anthems in its entirety
Second time 2023...Nightside in its entirety
You already listened to black metal before, remember Mgla? If I'm not mistaken, your impression of that band was quite positive :)
Btw, congrats, I guess Black is the top of the ladder when it comes to metal, you came a long way, my friend! :)
Ihsahn is the vocalist/guitarist of Emperor. His solo stuff is really good. Try Arcana Imperii off his last full length. Super fun proggy riff.
Or perhaps Marble Soul?
Lend Me The Eyes Of Millennia!
@@Blarkysh The first few times I listened to that track I didn't like it because the keyboards never stopped playing that loop, but after giving it some more spins it grew into one of my favorites on the album, partly because the keyboards never stop playing that loop🙂
Well, it stops eventually, but lasts long before doing so👍
Marble Soul and In Rites Of Passage are my most favorite tracks though🤘
Weren't prog and tech stuff that ruined Black Metal in the first place tho?
You should do an entire "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" album Reaction.
It is the Master of Puppets of Black Metal.
I second this
I third this
I quadra(?) this!
I quinta this I guess

Emperor is basically symphonic black metal because of the symphonic elements and different uses of clean vocals at times. Just like Dimmu Borgir.
emperor still more evil than dimmu
@@Tormentor669 Ah even still they're part of the same black metal genre because of their symphonic elements and different uses of clean vocals. So therefore they are basically the same thing.
“Cult” = “cold” as in the sound of the production and atmosphere
You'd listen to "Advent Sorrow - Pestilence shall come". Depressive black metal.
Absolute masterpiece.
Hell. Yes.
That is an absolutely bone chilling song.
I love Emperor. You absolutely need to check out Rotting Christ’s Rituals album next.
Time for "Mayhem" now Alex, the band that started the "norweigen black metal scene", and many including Emperor says that it would exist a "norweigen black metal" scene without 'Mayhem"
I recommend you start with the song "Freezing Moon" since it their biggest song.
He has to do that band haha.🤘🏾
Maybe some pelle ohlin versions
@@all_caps_kevlar6300 yeah ofc, thanks, forgot to write that. Alex: dont do the album version of "Freezin Moon" do one of the Pelle Ohlin versions of freezing moon. 🙂

Yes!
Intrigued by your eventual conclusion. Black metal isn't for everyone, and Emperor's freezingly cold sound doesn't diverge from that.
Some black metal songs have the most beautiful melodies you will ever hear...
If you want to learn about Black Metal, you must listen its roots like Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone and Emperor again!!
Bathory
its roots are bands like bathory, venom, hellhammer, celtic frost, sarcofago, early sepultura, etc
@@4sbel885 Exactly 100% correct 👍🏻
@@4sbel885 Thank you for mentioning early Sepultura. Those first two albums with Jairo T on guitar are truly black metal masterpieces
It's all trash and a bunch closet homosexuals that was letting their suppressed gay rage out.
Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone, THEY ALL NEXT
True norwegian black metal Long live the Emperor ! 😈
I love black metal, but i do prefer it when its made with good productions. But specially in the olden days low quality was part of the style.
One of the reasons i like Dimmu Borgir. Just try Mourning Palace maybe in a new jacket performed at Wacken open air with a chior and orchestra
Black metal is my favourite genre, my friends like to describe it as 'recorded on a potato, while in a tincan being thrown downstairs'
And well...they're not wrong.
This whole album is a masterpiece, seeing emperor live at bloodstock 2014 in the pissing rain was an experience!
Faust is a fantastic drummer...shame hes a murderer
That show was fucking brilliant.
*insert Varg smiling in court*
Finally you’d a black metal band, the vocals were pretty much like this in the early days, check out Bathory(the pioneer of this genre) Mayhem/Darkthrone/Burzum.
Burzum - Dunkelheit or Det Som Engang Var (very long song but you would love it)
Dark Funeral - The Secrets of The Black Arts
Mayhem - Funeral Fog
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger; Kathaarian Life Code or Hans Siste Vinter.
Heard Emperor 20+ years ago and become a huge fan. Love the band. Check out bands like, Taake, Tjuder, Carpathian Forest, Burzum, Kampfar.
"Where dead angles lie" by "dissection" you'll not regret...
Quick, change it to Kvlt before someone gets mad and makes an unwanted comment!
Don't be scared of Black Metal just embrace it 🤘😈🖤
Next up Darkthrone and Mayhem with Dead on vocals. Let the rabbit hole behin
I remember this, I was 14. It was so overwhelming, dark and enticing. Production, although bad, made it work better.
If black metal sounds like it was recorded on walkie-talkie in some shed in the middle of the woods around 1000 BC then it sounds perfect
Daaang I remember wearing this cassette tape out in my truck when I was younger because I listened to it so much
Now can you please do some of these:
Dissection - Maha Kali
Dissection - Where the dead angels lie (Bodom after midnight covered this too!)
Satyricon - Mother North
Dark Funeral - My Funeral
Impaled Nazarene - Armageddon death squad
Dimmu Borgir - Mourning palace
Dimmu Borgir - The serpentine offering
Cradle of filth - From the cradle to enslave
Or do all! You are gonna like these, I know that.
While you are in the track of black metal you gotta give mayhem a listen, I’d recommend either freezing moon or de mysteriis dom sathanas
Dissection - Where Dead Angels Lie. Its one of my favourite black metal songs also Bodom After Midnight have made cover of it its Alexi Laiho last project before he died
Some favorites of mine to check out.
Marduk - still fucking dead
Bathory - in conspiracy with satan
Mayhem - chainsaw gutsfuck
Dark funeral - to carve another wound
Mayhem - freezing moon
The list goes on and on forever but these are definitely ones to check out 😁
I see we have the same favorite Mayhem song
Stupidity in hell you'll c how could I have traded my soul 4 this garbage
The first time I heard Emperor I literally freaked the fuck out and I never stopped listening to them since then…
Kudos to mortiis for co writing one of the most beloved black metal songs
Reacting to Emperor with Dirt being played behind him is real sign of a true metal/music appreciating person \m/
i love your reaction dude.. "holy shit!" xD yes just a natural reaction to one of the greates BM songs ever made.
You can give a try to "Dissection" with The Somberlain, Where Dead Angels Lie, both live at Wacken or In The Cold Winds of Nowhere studio or live version. It could great reactions
When the first riff returns towards the end in a slower version sends shivers up my spin.

I vote for 'Samr'
The tritone isn't really the Devil's notes. Check (for instance) Adam Neely's video about that.
BM is an absolutely addictive type of music. I quit metal quite a few years ago, but when it comes to hearing metal, it's still BM. By the way - Emperor is great.
I really can't imagine how it can happen, but damn, there is too much of amazing bm nowadays, to quit it - It's never been as good as it is now
@@illumina1992 All the black metal bands today are just carbon copies of old school black metal.
@metalpit1000 I quit listening to newer metal. I mainly listen to old school. For me, it will always be death metal as my favorite. Then black metal comes in second.
@@samspade8830 uh, no

This takes me back to the 90s, lol. 2e were driving around with windows open, listening to this in Chicago. Good ole days...
One of the many great things about black metal is unconventional song structure. Also, an absolute MUST Black Metal reaction: MAYHEM FREEZING MOON.
In that album there is a song called A Fine day to die, a remast version of the original by Bathory... Man listen to the guitar solo at 6:30..its just INSANE !!!
Awesome reaction! Second wave BM is surely one of the most creative phases in metal history( the earlier years)..Now you can begin with
1)Where Dead Angels lie Or Night's blood by Dissection( you'll get comparatively good production quality here)
2) Dunkelheit by Burzum
3)Freezing Moon or De Mysteris Dom Sathanas by Mayhem
4) Quintessence by Darkthrone
5(Mother North by Satyricon
6) Capitel 1( Bergtatt album) by Ulver
You can start listening to neofolk/darkfolk albums too.. You definitely do not want to miss them in your life time: To begin with:
1) Kveldssanger by Ulver
2) Forlatt by Vali( one of the most beautiful albums ever created)
You need to listen to black metal as a whole album. Dissection, Dark Throne, Mayhem, Emperor, Burzum, Impaled Nazarene, and others. I'll be 55 this year and this is the music I listened to in my 20s. Not many friends enjoyed my taste in music.
Check out some Belphegor 👌
The mix is much more modern and refined.
"In Blood- Devour This Sanctity"
OR
"Spell of Reflection"
Actually, treat yourself to both.
By the way yes a lot of old black metal WAS recorded and mixed in a dusty ass attic...with a handheld tape recorder...😂
I love this song!
I am familiar with the band and song. There's tons of other black metal out there, especially from Norway. There's Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Darkthrone...there's quite a bit. If you wanna check out some early stuff that's also thrashy, check out Venom.
We need a full reaction to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album by Mayhem...
Hahaha

"Crawling King Chaos"
The thing I love about this album is the dense murk of the guitars. Its like wading through a room of black candle smoke m and mountain fog.
Dude... You're entering a bottomless pit! :D Immortal, Ulver, Arcturus is all I have to say.
Finally. One of my fave albums since it came out! Just lay down close your eyes and let it take you with...
And check out Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the great apocalypse, live on stage with Norwegian philharmonic orchestra and a quire.
Totally bad ass song. The scream at the beginning and that hypnotic riff mixed in and riding on top of the song. The vocals were buried on purpose and for effect,so evil and attractive.
Also try Leprous - Contaminate me (live at the Rockefeller Hall) which features Ihsahn

You should really listen to "Ye Entrancempirium" by Emperor, its so chaotic, yet so beautiful, quite a masterpiece id say
"Flipping the whole script on its head" That was exactly the point of Black Metal when it came out in the 90's!!
