I think the reason why Jerry went so hard is because most standups get very little respect from those that "made it" in Hollywood. Even if you have a sitcom, your sitcom has to become huge. Reminds me of that episode when Jerry & George are writing a pilot & george gets laughed at by a couple of girls at the bar.
Considering how most stand-up comics write their own material, and most actors don't (and probably couldn't put two sentences together coherently if they had to), that's a very good point.
"The only reason I'm saying this now is because I've already won all these awards." How ironic to have to win all the stupid awards to gain the credibility to call them stupid. What a real guy.
It is like when a poor person criticizes something that only rich people can have, other people gonna say he's just jealous because he can't buy it. But a rich person who can buy anything in the world can criticize that same expensive thing and nobody is gonna question him..
Like the others said: Ricky Gervais also came to my mind. He is just as good as this. They are both genius in this. They are ruling the stage and audience. Their timing and expression is simply perfect.
This, and "Jerry Seinfeld Does Not Want to Be Here" (Seth Meyers) - the honesty of someone who's super successful, has nothing to prove anymore, hates phoniness and has his insights is really one of a kind.
To anyone mentioning Ricky Gervais, his were legendary but I don't think he got a standing ovation, which I believe was the point being made by the op.
Not really. Not the comedians. They're comedians, they totally get _exactly _what he's talking about. Some of the other uneasy non-comedians maybe don't get it and think it's just a joke. Most of the best jokes are not just jokes. You can't be a pro comedian without thinking about this dualism.
I have never found Jerry Seinfeld funny, but this is the first material of his I've actually liked. It does hit on the real truth and power in that sublime art we call comedy, going back to the jester in the royal court telling the king he's a dickhead and winning the king's love in response.
We all grew up watching George Reeves; he was our hero and he all wanted to be him, every 7 year old in NY, that is, and the reference IMMEDIATELY hits us.
He doesn't do movies because he can't act. Hence his attack of the profession and the fart sniffing of his own (comedians.. he sucks at that too just not as badly)
I hate awards for artists... who is the bestest?: Picasso or Davinci... insanely stupid and giving misdirection to the common man... thank you Jerry. Gr8! Peace ☮💜
If I did a job where, when I looked out at my customers I found that they were always smiling at me and laughed at my dumbest jokes and if I found that I could become a millionaire if I worked hard enough, I wouldn't need an award either.
I wish I could find the whole show. Rock, Klein, & Shandling all killed that night. I think Anderson Cooper was the host. But I don't know how he got that gig. Robert Klein told a hilarious story about Rodney Dangerfield going sailing with him at Martha's Vineyard.
LOL thanks for this - one of the funniest (and ballsiest) bits I've ever seen. love how he doesn't pull any punches (and impressed that the other three comedians kept such a poker face)

Comedians are typically people frustrated and angry with society and those of us that laugh at them are similar. It’s our expression or art. People with out this sense of humor are weirdos to us.
I always feel the need to revisit this clip every time I see major awards ceremonies get coverage on the news - particularly when they are all congratulating each other when they make what they think is a profound political statement as they host literal golden statues in their hands.
Ironic Jerry seems like one of the most pretentious celebrities on the planet now. On a side note, the first half of this speech should be engraved in marble outside the Oscars venue and read every year to kick off the ceremony, because it’s absolutely brilliant.
And they have continued to do the same thing every year since this. Nothing has changed. Nothing will change. Just show me the next episode of Rick and Morty
Exact same thing for musicians. If musicians stopped taking themselves so serious they would see how silly they are and create some real art that doesn't revolve around their outfit.
The funny thing about it isn't actually what he's saying but the fact that Jerry actually means what he is saying and is being serious yet they are all laughing it off, just like audiences did when George Carlin would call them fake pretentious dumbass idiots to their faces. People in these audiences probably say to themselves oh he's not talking about us he's talking about other people.
Chris Rock is probably thinking “this is the most awkward moment I’ll ever have at an award ceremony”

It's a good thing to have a reminder that Seinfeld is not just a purveyor of urban banalities. This was genius.
