I can’t count how many times I’ve come back to your R/A of this song. But when I heard that Hellfire by VP is also up for a Grammy nomination consideration, and that it was reported you nominated them for consideration, I had to come back and watch again. Thank you! The recognition is soooooo well deserved.
Something that puts VoicePlay at the very top of their genre is that both Laine and Geoff arrange for the singer. They do not compose a song based on vocal ranges. They arrange specifically for who they want to sing the part, knowing their range, timbre, and even sass. Occasionally causes an issue when a guest singer is not available, but I can imagine the joy and commitment in singing a part because it is perfect for you.
What I love in the beginning, all the things pointed out, the way it is sung feels like this could be a hero singing. And then the twists slowly come in. Eee! Amazing cover
I KNEW that if you reacted to this that you’d giggle when he got to “sin!” Do you notice how Cesar breaks the fourth wall, glaring at the camera? And his solo-he starts matching Eli’s high note and then drops to baritone, leading in to J.None. And his guitar bit-think that’s an F#4-sweet! I don’t know if Eli is into collaborating, but I’d love to hear him sing with Jonathan Young. And his acting-he looks like he’s crying at times. He just slays it every time. Thanks for pointing out the perc during the Kyrie part-that snare/sizzle! I hadn’t caught that bit yet. Great reaction/analysis!
This arrangement is a masterpiece and those that can’t hear it must be musically deaf. The way Layne used major and minor, tempo changes and the different voices to depict Frollo’s inner conflict was genius. I particularly loved Cesar’s little guitar riff and Eli’s super high belt on You Will Burn. Epic 🔥
I have absolutely no singing ability and very little musical ability, and even I can hear the totally amazing shifts in this arrangement, although I couldn’t name them as you can 👍🏼. It is completely top notch. Possibly the best I have ever heard from any group ever.

Thinking about the perc during that last section of the song I just realized that it’s got the same “feel” as the snare drums you might hear at a military execution. And given the text of the lyrics, it seems perfectly chosen. Of course.
"Burn it" gave me chills, while Cesar's air guitar made me laugh. I 100% agree with you, as genius as Alan Menken is, the last part of this song lost energy. Layne figured out what it was missing: A beatboxer! 😂
Oooh! That Geoff vibrato though! So smooth, subtle, not to strong. So beautiful. If I had to pick favorites (Which I wouldn't really because they are all so talented and amazing) I'd be hard pressed. Probably between Geoff and Layne though.
I definitely love the contrast between Geoff's lows and Eli following up. As you said, deeper voices are almost stereotyped to be villainous. In my opinion, that part really adds to the element of mental turmoil that Minister Frollo is going through and expressing. The decision between righteousness and mortal desire
The first time I heard this one, I had no idea it was a song from Disney aka Hunchback of Norte Dame. It’s one of the few Disney animated movies I’ve never seen other than scenes here and there. This one disturbed me at first, but I couldn’t help but love the beautiful arrangement. I’m glad you’ve put it on your list. I’ve missed your VoicePlay and Geoff reactions. :)
Re the vocal percussion near the end ... After listening to this many times, I'm picking up almost a ... "military" beat. Like the drums being played as someone is marched to their execution.
I would love to see you react to their “Wicked” Mash-up. It absolutely blew me away!!
Рік тому+2
And yet another vocal analysis worth every minute of watching. I just love how you point out those little details and explain things I would otherwise miss, it's so great and gives me so much to focus/work on when singing myself! For me, your reaction videos really stand out, even from those made by vocal coaches. ❤❤❤
I was hesitant about listening to this cover because I know that Geoff can struggle sometimes to find the villain in himself (I don't think the man has an evil bone in his body. Mischievous, sure, but not evil), and Frollo is one of those villains that absolutely makes my skin crawl. But Geoff brought it. I have to give him credit for stretching as an actor. Obviously the song as a whole is amazing, as always. And also, as always, her analysis makes the song that much more enjoyable to listen to. Love to everyone involved!
Totally agree. The man definitely has range, and not simply musically. He gets some real acting done in these performances. For example, there are some moments in Jack's Lament where I'm wondering if he's been playing around too much with a Ouija board, the way he channels some of the darker elements of that character so effectively. And then in the Paul Bunyan short, he's right back to his normal 'aw shucks' self! Range! :)
@@billparrish4385 He worked for Disney for years! They know about him! Why oh why has he not at least voiced a villain for them yet?! I feel like we really need that to happen!
So true. He has the voice of a Disney villain... But the heart - and face - of a romantic lead. And I don't know who makes my flesh creep worse, Frollo or Gaston, but those characters are truly evil men.
The Grand Beatbox Battle is happening this week, solo beatboxers use a lot of amazing singing techniques beyond just vocal percussion, would be cool to see it covered on the channel. Beatbox fans always show up for in depth vocal analysis.
Great way to begin the week with this awesome performance by Voiceplay and Elizabeth's analysis. Please join Elizabeth for her premieres, every Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 11 AM ET (10 AM after the clocks fall back).
I had been eagerly waiting for you to cover this song and am so glad that you did. I learn so much about music every time I listen to one of your reactions and cannot thank you enough for that. When I heard VoicePlay's version of the song for the very first time I had some trouble comprehending it, as it was literally the first time I heard that song at all and I had no idea what it was about. I just thought it was a very good song. Re-hearing it for several times and figuring out it was about the hunchback of notre dame, I began to realise that it was way more than just "very good" in capturing the athmosphere and the story behind the song. I eventually went for the original, but I have to agreee: It's an interesting song for a Disney movie, but VoicePlay went and made it epic.
Tony Jay's (Frolo's voice actor) is up there on my list of favorite voice actors. He really defined a generation of animated villains. He doesn't appear to have done a whole lot of singing, but I'm certainly glad he did for this song. This song has long a special place in my heart. Delving deep into the passions and reasonings of a man struggling with temptations stronger than anything he's felt before. Blaming everyone but himself for what's going on. But at the same time being more concerned with his passions, than his murderous heart and allowing it to drive him further into the sin he's already accepted in an attempt to avoid the sin he has not.
If we’re doing songs from animated movies now, I strongly suggest Deliver Us, from The Prince of Egypt (the original, by Ofra Haza). I absolutely LOVE this song, and her voice is absolutely gorgeous
I love how you go through and give actual educated input on these songs. I would love to see you do some more stuff from the 50s. Maybe some folk music from John Denver or the mamas and the papas.
At the end, that "stuttering" sound Layne makes that you call a double down beat - great term - would probably be called double or triple tonguing in a brass instrument. I hadn’t noticed it until you pointed it out. Great percussion from Layne - of course.
Please do a deep dive of 'Golden Hour - VoicePlay ft. Anthony Gargiula' I am in so in love with it right now and would love to hear what you think of it. Love your videos, thank you for making them!!
Another great video and live chat!!!! I just a video I hadn't seen for a bit and I would totally request it for you. The Tenors "Who Wants To Live Forever" featuring Lindsay Sterling!!!! Fantastic cover and great for the season as the guys are dressed like vampires (only enhances the video.) Lindsay is just amazing on the violin. If you don't get to react to it live, I definitely recommend you and Kirk listen and watch on your own. Pulls my strings everytime!!!! Still in love with music everyday. ❤
I have been waiting on your version ..... of all the reactions because I love how you geek out and how many new things I learn every time you react. its more than just feelings its educational.. but your faces are amazing fun too!
Geoff is my favorite male vocalist. I love how big a fan you are of both him and VoicePlay. However, you have only reacted to one song by my favorite female vocalist. Lucy Thomas is 19 yo now and she sounds even better than she did when you reacted to her cover of Hallelujah when she was 16. More Lucy Thomas please. Try her cover of Evergreen.
Fantastic performance, Fantastic reaction and analysis. You are the Queen of Reaction and Analysis. And Voiceplay, as you have said, keeps raising the bar. I also love that you are a farm girl from Washington! (Vancouver resident here)
Love your reactions to Voiceplay performances. They definitely give a wonderful new twist to this classic Disney song. By the way, in case you have not been reminded of this recently. You remain the undisputed champion of best thumbnail photos on You Tube.
Your reaction always on point, so educative and so fun to watch. Much beloved and appreciated!!! Just a side note: "Kire eleison" (Κύριε ελέησον) is Greek Christian Orthodox chanting, not Latin 😊, but you are right, it means "Lord have mercy"!!!
@@BartonBreen I specifically said that "Κύριε ελέησον" is a Greek Orthodox Christian chanting and not Latin. I did not discuss as a Hellin my self who is using my language in my country (more than 90% Greek-orthodox Christians, religion whise), or as known for a few decades as "common Greek" or "Κοινή Ελληνική γλώσσα" which was adopted as opposed to the most "official" or "intellectual" "Καθαρεύουσα", since the common one was used by the majority of the population. But thank you for your input.
Thank you so much for another amazing VoicePlay analysis! I'm sure you'll get around to Jack's Lament, but may I also suggest all 4 of the Bass Gang's May The Bass Be With You Vol. 3 (in order, as they put together a through story). Arabian Nights, Be Prepared, Gaston, and Friend Like Me
Regarding the comment about the original piece having more dome than the cover - from what I recall from earlier episodes, you tend to associate that with classical training, operatic singing and the like. To me it would make sense for Frollo to sound like he has that classical training; he's very much the kind of character who uses his status and refinement and the perception of his importance, authority and sophistication to his advantage. Thus he should have that classically sophisticated style of singing. For Frollo it's merely a veneer of refinement and sophistication that covers an absolute piece of trash human being (which this song very much reveals), of course, but he clearly plays the game well enough to actually be convincing.
YES. The first time I heard this performed it sounded so passionate that it made me think it was a totally unsuitable song for a Disney film! Well done VP for your interpretation! The silhouette is Layne's partner in PattyCake Productions and a former baritone member of VP, Tony Wakim, who happened to be in the studio on the day; speech by Eli.
I’ve rediscovered Voiceplay after a few years of listening to other music. This is so good… I wish I could hear them cover the whole musical. I would buy the album and buy it for everyone I know. And Geoff is from another planet 🎶
These guys are so incredibly talented and I don't want to take anything away from them but am I the only one that feels like a big flashy acappella arrangement softens the edge of this particular song?
That's because new Disney is borderline evil - and they're creative directors admit it in board meetings based on their self-described agendas. It's not about family friendly and politically neutral entertainment anymore.
14:40 the castanet sound is actually pretty simple: quickly switch between a "k" sound (tongue blocking at the back of the palate) to a "t" sound (tongue blocking behind the upper teeth). I don't know how he does it though.
For the record... this is a wonderful cover. But no cover will ever come close. Tony Jay just had the most unique and amazing voice, and he was a wonderful actor. There's just something specific about his performance that makes it the most perfect version it can be. I grew up on the show "Reboot" where Tony played the main antagonist (Megabyte), and when I heard him sing this... I was terrified and I simply melted. It's THE performance of "Hellfire". This is a deliciously wonderful rendition, and does the song SO MUCH justice... but there is just no substitute. RIP Tony. Thank you for your part in so many wonderful memories.
Elizabeth, great attention to detail in the ambience. Your studio is dark with orange lighting on the wall to give the intimation of fire in your studio...not just in VP's video.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed this song until I heard this cover, it was so good! But if possible, how about giving Geoff's cover of Jack's Lament a go? 👀
I had to listen to them sing it first .. and then the voice listening to it lol. Makes it so much more enjoyable especially knowing when certain parts will hit watching for the reaction lol. Siiiiinnnnnnnnn .. lol
Thank you for your reaction, Elizabeth: I'm both enjoying and learning so much from analysis! Sharing your love for both Voicepay and Disney, may I suggest another Disney-cover? I'd love to hear what you'd have to say about Home Free's version of Try Everything (from Zootopia, originally sung by Shakira). It's a profoundly happy song, and I am in awe of what Home Free did with it. Thanks for all your work: It's a real pleasure to watch and listen.
I would love to see your reaction to The Dead South. Banjo, cello, guitar, mandolin. Sometimes a small kick drum, no other drum and none needed. Their best known song is 'In Hell I'll be In Good Company'. I particularly like their version of 'You are My Sunshine'; it's the way it should be sung- not as a happy, perky song, but as a yearning, pleading song. They also have done The Doors' 'People Are Strange' and System of a Down's 'Chop Suey', among other covers. Who knew Bluegrass could be so versatile! Great videos with all those. too.
I haven't seen a PTX video...lots of original stuff, live and new Christmas Album for you in December. What's up. Loved this review . Love Jeff's rumbles.

Re the vocal percussion near the end ... After listening to this many times, I'm picking up almost a ... "military" beat. Like the drums being played as someone is marched to their execution.
I would love to see you react to their “Wicked” Mash-up. It absolutely blew me away!!
And yet another vocal analysis worth every minute of watching. I just love how you point out those little details and explain things I would otherwise miss, it's so great and gives me so much to focus/work on when singing myself! For me, your reaction videos really stand out, even from those made by vocal coaches. ❤❤❤
I still want to hear Geoff’s solo Jack’s Lament please!
Range! :)
@@billparrish4385Jack's Lament is my favorite piece of music with Geoff in it period, I love it
@@billparrish4385 He worked for Disney for years!
GBB is this week? Thank you, I'm out of the loop
Great way to begin the week with this awesome performance by Voiceplay and Elizabeth's analysis. Please join Elizabeth for her premieres, every Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 11 AM ET (10 AM after the clocks fall back).
Thank you for an awesome, emotional and technical reaction to this fantastic song
I love when Geoff goes up! He has such an overall amazing voice! This song definitely highlights all of their skills!
Yes, well put. Frollo and his evil are the ends where so much righteous (often religious) hypocrisy leads.
Thanks for analyzing a new VoicePlay for us!
I love your analyses ❤ your reactions and passion are so great to experience! Thanks for sharing
Yeeeesssss!!! John Denverrrrrrrr!
I would love Glenn Campbell & Rickey Nelson.
Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee!
At the end, that "stuttering" sound Layne makes that you call a double down beat - great term - would probably be called double or triple tonguing in a brass instrument. I hadn’t noticed it until you pointed it out. Great percussion from Layne - of course.
Really glad I stumbled on to this channel. It's fun and smart content in an increasingly dumb world 😊
I was really hoping that you would do this one! By far one of my favorites that they have done!!
😳 Charismatic Elizabeth meets Earthquake Geoff... This will be a very in-depth analysis, I think
She’s met him many times lol
Looking forward to this reaction. 😁. The logical suite is Geoff’s latest cover of Jack’s lament 👻
A particularly good version of vocal percussion castanets is done by Adam Rupp of Home Free in their Sea Shanty medley. The human voice is amazing.
She has reacted to that.
Koine Greek. It's not specific to Greek Orthodoxy, although they also use it.
@@christopherd.0356 you're welcome. ;)
Oh CV. I was SO hoping that you would react to this one!
And I SO agree with other commenters on requesting "Jack's Lament" From Geoff...please.
I had my fingers crossed that there would be a reaction to this one.❤
Elizabeth another great analysis,great job.
I’ve rediscovered Voiceplay after a few years of listening to other music.
This is so good…
I wish I could hear them cover the whole musical. I would buy the album and buy it for everyone I know.
And Geoff is from another planet 🎶
By far my favorite Disney song!
These guys are so incredibly talented and I don't want to take anything away from them but am I the only one that feels like a big flashy acappella arrangement softens the edge of this particular song?
Old Disney is amazing. I’m more offended and put off by the new version of Disney than I ever was the old version.
That's because new Disney is borderline evil - and they're creative directors admit it in board meetings based on their self-described agendas. It's not about family friendly and politically neutral entertainment anymore.
Great job on the analysis. Bug thumbs up 👍
14:40 the castanet sound is actually pretty simple: quickly switch between a "k" sound (tongue blocking at the back of the palate) to a "t" sound (tongue blocking behind the upper teeth).
I'll be honest, you didn't have to start off so hard on this video, talking about desire, your presence, enthusiam, and beauty are more than enough.
I've been waiting for this reaction!!!!!!!
I can't stress enough how much I love this song!!!
Wonderful music! Thank you.
That lovely lighter bass in the beginning is (except during his solo) sung by Layne.
Never has a single word chilled my blood so much, but Geoff's "WHAT?" was chilling!
People can boo-hoo about evil all they want, this is still the best Disney song ever
Great videos with all those. too.
allways great fun to hear your analysis! you should also do the newest cover from Geoff: Folsom prison blues
That’s not his latest, he released Jack’s Lament for spooky season 😊
@@thisismetoday7423 Ah, right! whoops, my bad... thats also a fun song XD, but still would love an analysis on the folson prison blues 😅
Adam in Home Free also does the Spanish castinets - especially in their Sea Shanty Medley! Love it! ❤
ahh... i tought it will be cover on Lourna Shore :D
Halestorm's - I Am The Fire What do you guys think of this song or Kansas's - Carry On Wayward Son
7:31 "I love that 'Burn It' transition" Agreed! Reminds me of SUGA's "It's burning" in the BTS song Fire. Pivotal.
I haven't seen a PTX video...lots of original stuff, live and new Christmas Album for you in December. What's up.
Loved this review . Love Jeff's rumbles.
I think there is some legal issues
You make music so much fun 😂 Can't thank you enough.
I think one of the things that sets VoicePlay apart is the musical complexity of arrangements like this.
