More than just singing a song, Voiceplay draws you into a different world. You've got Layne as the pulse of the ocean, Ceasar as the mournful ghosts emerging from the fog, Geoff as an anchor of iron and coral, Jose Rosario Jr as the noble captain facing down the darkness and Elie hoisting some vocal colors HIGH! And beckoning to us all is the siren of the high c's . . . i mean seas, Elizabeth; inviting us to join her in a celebration of fun, fantasy, and vocal technique. All hands on deck!
That gut wrenching sound that Elizabeth mentioned made it sound like they were labouring while they sang in true sailor tradition of the time. Imagine working together to haul the sail lines and the heavy work involved, you wouldn't be singing a fast song, it would be slow and laboured.

Personally I prefer Elizabeth, and I think she's more than enough by herself, unless she's interviewing an artist. Almost all reactors have lapsed into total silence at the end of this song, even most of the voice tutors/coaches and singers. Voiceplay can be pretty mind blowing at times, but I think they went all out this time.

Out of all the VoicePlay and Geoff reactions, THIS is the one I was waiting for! This song is so complex and so beautifully done and I can't wait to hear your comments. Geoff hinted he's working on a huge new project for VoicePlay. Can't wait!
I didn't know where I should direct my attention with this one : what VoicePlay and José are doing is incredible, but I so love to watch Elizabeth's excitement and enthusiasm.
I've been waiting for your return to Voiceplay and Geoff. Love your breakdown and the fact that you caught Eli going up while Geoff dropping even lower. I suggest you check out their "Friends on the Other Side"... It had a special guest return...
Yes!!!!!! Can’t wait for this one it’s 🔥🔥🔥 This is my favorite arrangement that Geoff has done for Voiceplay. Now you have to do Friends On the Other Side! J is back and it’s amazing!
Thank you for your joy and excitement in the reaction. I really appreciated you breaking down the minor to major and resolving back to minor notes. As a non-singer, it helps me gain a deeper understanding of what I'm listening to and enjoying.
Voiceplay is really good at making a song turn into a full contact event. Geoff directs his own notes, Eli is squeezing every intention out of each note. Each of them fully commit to the performance. Never disappoint! Thank you for your reaction, always so good and also never disappoints.
Eli doesn't need to squeeze anything, he looks like he does it with very little effort. There is very little effort shown in his face when he sings a full on rock belt even though he probably uses every muscle down to his feet to push that power out.
This reaction looked exhausting! (In the best way possible, of course; you got so excited about so many things.☺️) This song is just so overwhelmingly good! Also, mad respect for your self-restraint. No way I could have waited a month to listen to this. 😅
This and My Mother Told Me are where I realized what an amazing actor AND vocalist Eli is. In most of their songs, he gives off this really approachable, cool, even kind of jazzy vibe, but here and in MMTM, I totally believe he’s got a Viking/Pirate’s soul, and he’s coming to raid your village. He’s actually kind of scary, in a good way, and his voice totally matches the character.
Eli is fantastic - love, LOVE his voice! He's got so many styles and colors, and he moves between them flawlessly. He could definitely front a metal band
I love Elizabeth's facial expressions, you can just tell what she's feeling and how excited she is to be doing something she loves and hearing amazing music. She's so expressive that even I can tell how excited she is, and that is saying something as I can't really recognize people's emotions unless they're at their peak. (Like, I can't tell if someone's sad unless they're literally crying, that must be why I like expressive people so much - That must be why Layne is my favorite VP member, did you see his expressions on this video? He's passing very well that 'less than sane pirate' vibe-) Also, does her giggle resounds in everyone's heads when they hear Geoff drop a low note or is it just me?? Like, I'll just be watching a VoicePlay video, Geoff does his stuff and then her giggle just appears in my head. Elizabeth's just so charming! 'Charismatic' indeed!
I have been binge watching this ever since it came out. So far, no one has mentioned the moment when they sang "hoist the colors" and Jose raised his sword to the lighting bolt - that instead of singing the word high, the sword was raised HIGH. How creative.
The most unexpected and awesome sounds come out of Layne's mouth. How can he do all that? 👀 Ever since Earl left, Eli's role has been expanding, and he's really all over the spectrum! 🔥 Cesar also has an amazing voice, and Jose blends in amazingly well! ✨ And Geoff, he never stops to amaze me!! 🔥💗🙏 All together such a terrific job! 💖🏴☠️
Oh, good! So glad you’re doing this one! And this is why I watch reactions. When I listen, I get the goosebumps and just love how gorgeous it is, but then you explain why it’s working so beautifully. Super reaction! Thanks!
Exactly, ear candy is absolutely a perfect expression for this. This is so so good! They deserve awards for this and the Halo theme, as well. Simply outstanding all around from arrangement to performance to makeup to lighting and editing.
My God woman. I love how you make informative adorable! Every time I watch your videos I always learn something and your excitement about it is so damn cute. :) It's also exciting to discover new music through this group, I will be looking into more of their music thanks to you (also I think Avi Kaplan did something with this group)!
I’m so glad you went over that first line where Cesar harmonises hauntingly behind Eli, right before the first “yo ho” section - it’s one of my favourite moments of the entire song. I feel like Eli is the living pirate defiantly facing down the gallows/hangman, whereas Cesar has that melancholy lament of the ghosts of those who have already gone. It’s SUCH a cool combo. Cesar is my fave in this one - he goes 110% with both costuming and characterisation throughout :)
Cesar compliments the group so well, he's a great addition, I'm glad they found him. I loved the way his voice almost seemed to fade away as he sang, "and bound her in her bones" at the beginning, as you say, almost ghostlike.
I am immensely grateful to have found this channel. Elizabeth, you have introduced me to so many wonderful performers whom I would otherwise never have encountered. Thank you. Watching your reactions is delightful, and your knowledgeable commentary has taught me much about singing, and music in general.
I loved the tenderness of Cesar's voice as opposed to the strident forward sound of Eli's voice. When they go into the polyphonic part it's really great to hear that. I've probably watched all the reaction videos along with the original. Thanks for breaking it down for us.
Cesar has some impressive power when he wants it as well though. He sings softly at the beginning, but at the end, he sings the same line with a full on rock belt.
This song has broken several reactors, and you looked wiped out from it, from the amount you invested in it. Thank you for such a great video. And Geoff's leap up was 2 octaves!
The lighting is modeled on cannon barrages and burning ships, which gives the whole setting a wonderful dynamic. They also raised the lighting innovations on "Friends on the Other Side".
Voiceplay are constantly outdoing themselves every time and make it harder to outdo themselves next time, but they always manage it... Somehow. I love the way they always include costume, lighting and a set do give a proper background to their songs, one of the few a capella groups who are TRUE performers and not just a group of singers.
Dear elizabeth.the energy is still ringing in my ears Aly is brill the power and passion in his face Geoff o.m.g. your knowledge and hearing is fantastic.
My favorite from them and listen to it all the time. Love how much more Eli has taken over, he seemed to be hidden for so long. Would like you to see Home Free’s Sea Shanty Medley
More than any other, your reactions help me to appreciate the genius, talent, and skills that your subjects display in the songs you critique. Good job Liz.
That section around 14 minutes in where you talked about being able to hear the hope in the sadness because of the extra note - pure poetry and made me appreciate the arrangement (and your analysis) even more.
No matter how many times I watch/see these videos, Elizabeth never fails to make me feel like I'm watching for the first time. Her genuine excitement and absolute joy are so very contagious, and her knowledge brings a new depth of appreciation for what these artists are capable of. Plus her reactions are completely adorable. Much love, Elizabeth, and thank you for sharing with us!
I do believe this is the first time I've heard "sepulchral" used in a vocal and rhythmic texture. I remember in my sacred music training trying to conduct the word "hosts" as in "Lord of Hosts". I never got it right. These guys get it all right!
If I recall, Layne does most of the mixing and pre-production. While he's not a perfectionist, he won't accept "almost right". For him, if it's not right, it's done again and again until it is right. Check out Elizabeth in her interview with Layne, he explains it better.
Another great analysis, Elizabeth! I always learn so much from you, which enables me to enjoy elements I was not aware of, or if so, barely. One thing that struck me about the piece, was this sense of building, up and up, an arc that didn't seem to resolve, creating a tension so thick you could cut it with a knife (or a cutlass)! Its building intensity fully drew me in, and had me hanging on every line and note, to see (and feel) whatever might be around the next corner. While the child's thin, pitiful and distracted wail in the movie built somewhat into the crowd's beginning of defiance, this arrangement transcends that emotion, turning it into vehemence and power! But words fail me, and I don't know a better way to describe it, except maybe as this powerful cable, like a hawser on a ship, red hot and pulsating with energy, pulling me further up and up a mountainside, on a moonlit island. Hmm, still not quite right, but as close as I can come to it. Not this or that piece of the song, but the woven-together entirety of it! Anyway, thanks for your inspiring analysis! This group is doing some very great things...
Voiceplay is actually what got me into your videos, so I'm happy to see you react to more of them. :) Your reactions to them now are just as fun as when you first saw them! I'd really love to see reactions to some of their stuff that doesn't get as much attention, like their Panic At The Disco in 4 minutes video (assuming you haven't seen it already).

One thing I especially love about Geoff sliding that octave up at 'die' is the way he almost fades into the other three. It's very smooth, and it's just a delight to listen to.
Oh yay! I was looking forward to this one. It truly is one of my faves from them. The vocals, the lights, the production, and the mood. Pretty fantastic, I’d say. Great reaction as always!!
I always love listening for all the little bits that Geoff adds with mouth percussion. I mean Voiceplay is amazing and all their stuff is just off the charts.
Sometimes my fascination with the bassists, beat boxers & high tenors causes me not to give a lot of credit to guys like Eli and Rob (Home Free). Both of them are really amazing singers and I think they're both the most versatile singers in their respective group (shifting into different musical styles).
Totally loved this. Out of all of the analysis and reactions out there, your analysis is so great. In depth, lots of musicality and you help build the bridge between the complexity of the music and what a lay person may hear. Thanks Elizabeth, love your d and d too ❤
Been hanging out waiting for you to react to this one! I don't understand all your technical terms, but your reactions and facial expressions make it all worthwhile! Love this song!!!
as always I really only come here just to witness the Geoff voice, and as usual I am not disappointed hahaha. Side note- this song has been on repeat in my car for weeks now. It's absolutely incredible!
As always, we are spoiled by both Voiceplay as well as Elizabeth. Voiceplay is the most technically sound acapella group that's ever existed and they are always on point with their arrangements, accompaniments, choreography, lighting and sound and of course...five of the best voices you could possibly ask for. A sheer delight to the senses. Likewise...Elizabeth is my favorite reaction expert for a reason. She actually is an expert first & foremost and her deep dives into their performances brings music lovers a treat this Halloween season. The treat being her expertise, her enthusiasm, her capacity to be both silly yet adorable in the same breath...("I'm gonna spit all over everything, so I'll practice that off camera!") LOLOLOL. My wife thinks that I watch too much reaction videos, primarily from Elizabeth. I say that my wife is missing out on true education and entertainment.
Geoff did an amazing arrangement on this one, and amazing bass lines! A lot of F1's, amazing jump F2-F4, a slide in the end C2-G#1 (chest) to F1 (subharmonic).. Eli hitting C5's like nothing, Layne singing baritone... My favorite Voiceplay's video
The fact that there is also a part where Layne is doing Bass with Geoff is so cool! (At least I think he's doing it- I'm by no means observant enough to know for sure-)
OMG I have been waiting for this!!! Finally! You're the best at reactions, I love your take on the songs. I knew this was going to be amazing!!! Ty for reacting to this masterpiece!
I love the fire that Eli brings in this one. One of the things that I love about VoicePlay is how well they play the part of villains when they chose to. But what's more, this one really does make me feel like Jose Rosario Jr. would be a good fit as a fifth man. The presence that he brings as a character is just amazing, and I love how he fits into VoicePlay's aesthetic (and sound) so well.
This is not singing..... It is the highest degree of theatrical preformence ... The ambiance in all of the videos .... Is 1000 percent more than extrodenairy ... Oh oh .. please just keep showing these videos ... Many many thank you for introducing me to this group 🥰❤️. I wish i could see who is responsible for decor , lights ... Voiceplay is incredible, and this is such an amazing cover!! You can actually see who did the lighting, arranging, etc. in the description box of all their videos 😊 They always put the full credits there.
Never heard of em, but this is awesome, so i'm gonna check out more for sure. Thnx Elizabeth, another great video, and your channel name is spot on, truly charismatic you are :p
Ahoy, Elizabeth! I applaud your sense of adventure by placing, "Polly the Parrot," on Lilith's shoulder, and Krakino wrapping his tentacles around the bottle of Bourbon (or "Rum" for a wee sip). I loved this performance and Geoff's arrangement was fantastic. I enjoyed Jose, Cesar, and Eli's vocals/harmonies and the outfits/makeup, Layne's blasting beats, and Geoff's usual low tones. However, this time Eli absolutely shined when he gets that rock/metal edge to his voice. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
I was so glad to see this reaction when I signed in been waiting for it for a long time. This is hands down one if not the best Voice play ever and you give the best reactions.
Hi Elizabeth, would love for your reaction to Dead Can Dance's "Sanvean", song by Grammy award nominated and Golden Globe winner (for Gladiator) Lisa Gerrard. As an opera singer, I think you would especially appreciate her voice; which is truly otherworldly. Her performance of this song is the only time I've cried at a live concert! Truly, the most moving voice I've ever heard. Oh, and by the way, no need to read the lyrics first. She sings it in a unique language that she invented! Thank you!
They did it again for sure but so did you! You never miss a trick and the range of appreciation that you bring to every reaction is just as high a level as Voiceplay is to a capella .
I am by no means a singer of any quality but I appreciate a great voice. Listened to a lot of a acapella during lock down and Voiceplay are one of my favourites along with Pentatonix and Home free. I love the way you breakdown what your hearing and explain how it all works and fits to somebody like me who has no knowledge of composition. Thanks for all the content, what you do is amazing.
as many times as I've listened to this, I cannot EVER get over Eli's voice. he kills me over and over again, and he's got my explicit permission to. the sheer buildup as they move from where they start (quiet, almost sheepish child despair) to where they end up ("ARE WE GONNA TAKE THIS, LADS? HELL NO!!!) is a thing of beauty. it catches you up and takes you captive, and what a happy captive you become. the rhythm sweeps you along like the sweep of the waves, and if you ever show signs of wandering, you get a sharp "HEY!" or a bolt of lightning, or a smooth slide of a cutlass. don't fight it. they have you now. never shall they die.
I think Eli sounds exactly like Stevie Perry from Journey...You hit the rock sound down to a tee. Your reaction was beautiful, organic and so knowledgeable!!! I have "binge-watched" every reaction video to this amazing work of art on UA-cam. I subscribed today!!!
Eli, you clearly WANT TO witness the Version from Colm McGuinness D: Believe me, his Voice and his Range will blow your mind. He is just outstanding! I beg you, I will sell the soul of my firstborn to see you reacting to Colm McGuinness!!!
I didn't think I could love another song as much as this one, but Home Free's new cover of Dire Straits song "Brothers in Arms" takes my breath away. Tim Foust sounds like a pipe organ.
OMG Liz, TY for doing this one!!! Oof i love your reactions so much.. and your face tells so much!!! Oh Blast, i love you!! ♥ Lillith+parrot and a Kraken... I think you might be myself 100 years ago

Ever since Earl left, Eli's role has been expanding, and he's really all over the spectrum! 🔥
Cesar also has an amazing voice, and Jose blends in amazingly well! ✨
And Geoff, he never stops to amaze me!! 🔥💗🙏
All together such a terrific job! 💖🏴☠️
This version is very cool. But I also wish Colm McGuiness's version can get more shine. He triples his voice and his range is absolutely insane.
@@Tryst46 You're right about that!
I love your reactions to Voiceplay and Geoff. You get so giddy it's a pleasure to see in a combination with the music.
watching your reactions and hearing you breakdowns of the song makes me appreciate it so much more and your joy in feeling the feels is just yes.
This is the only reaction I've seen with someone cementing the part with the short tone shift. Thanks! To me it stands out in a really good way.
I can't count how many times I gave seen this and just realized Geoff joined Layne on some of the beatboxing. So much to notice!
Just love the Joy you show as you're watching! Super!!!
Can you react to Exo's Best Live Vocals 2020? (@
Exo is a South-Korean boy band known for its great live vocals and great performing skills. Since they are on semi-hiatus because of mandatory military service, all of the members also started their own solo careers. In the compilation above, you can hear both group and solo performances. Thank you in advance! :)
Yes, please
Please thank you sm!
EXO had one of the best live vocals in kpop. Their voices are incredible. Please do a reaction on this video. Thanks.
I'm always amazed by EXO's Vocal 😭❤️❤️
EXO has some of the best vocals in music!
Oh my goodness, this one is my favorite of Voiceplay, I was waiting for you to do this ☝️. I love watching your reviews….
Elizabeth's reactions to low notes might be my new fav thing lol 😂. Great reaction and analysis as always! ❤️
I kept on wondering when we were going to get this one! I knew you'd help us understand just why we love it so much.
I love how Jose, Eli and Ceasar pass the melody between them. The way they'll join and drop out at different times.
Ok, we're going to need an honest update on how much time and spittle was expended by Elizabeth to emulate Layne's sound...
We really need this comment to get some attention. Her viewers need to know. 🤣
Give her a chance to swim to the keyboard :)
She has such a cute personality, it's absolutely adorable when she tries to beatbox.
Every time there is a low note, no matter who sings it, Elizabeth has a little giggle. It's soo cute I love it ♥
I LOVE IT!!!! These guys always create awesome videos. Their voices blend so well. I have no favorites. One of my favorite videos so far.
Elizabeth being so overwhelmed and flustered every moment if this is why I keep coming back.🥰
As always, we are spoiled by both Voiceplay as well as Elizabeth.
What a way to finish strong, they did an incredible job all the way through. Props to the arrangement. They never fail to impress.
Just you wait until you listen to the Oogie boogie song
The fact that there is also a part where Layne is doing Bass with Geoff is so cool! (At least I think he's doing it- I'm by no means observant enough to know for sure-)
@@nicomartins7874 He is singing more like a baritone, but Layne can do bass, he can go down to Bb1-B1 I think, he has a great voice too
@@justasnowleopard1202 I've heard, probably all the songs from VoicePlay, oogie boogie song was the first, my first introduction in the bass world.
@@kz300f Yeah, that's fair :D Thanks for the correction, I'm not well versed on this.
But yeah, Layne has a great voice! It's really nice.
OMG I have been waiting for this!!! Finally! You're the best at reactions, I love your take on the songs. I knew this was going to be amazing!!! Ty for reacting to this masterpiece!
Eli could front for Iron Maiden and would excel, even Skid row too. his Voice is a gift of the gods!
I gotta say, your just adorable lol. The breathless excitement when you pause just cracks me up, it’s such true enthusiasm and it’s contagious. ❤️❤️
Geoff's range never ceases to amaze me. I swear he has a 4 or even 5 octave range. So cool
Geoff and Llane did just a brilliant job arranging this. Absolutely my favorite VP song, ever.
It is amazing
These type of preformences touches your soul....
Pretty sure that is a bottle of Kraken spiced rum. I have a bottle of it on my desk right now- very tasty stuff!
@@CynicalTesuji Thanks!
You're one of the few that actually noticed! Thank you Kirby. The Halloween this year is a blast! ❤
I was so glad to see this reaction when I signed in been waiting for it for a long time. This is hands down one if not the best Voice play ever and you give the best reactions.
Please react to Voiceplay - If I was a Rich Man/Girl. The arrangement of that song is veryy stunning!
As much as I love this song performance, I love watching you react to it even more, you are so sweet Elizabeth
Thank you!
Oh, my. That is lovely. Thanks for the recommendation
I've been waiting for your reaction to THIS prize! It should be nominated for a Grammy Award! 💖 👍 💖
They did it again for sure but so did you!
You never miss a trick and the range of appreciation that you bring to every reaction is just as high a level as Voiceplay is to a capella .
love this reaction! not sure if you have already reacted and analyzed Voiceplay's cover of the Halo theme, but I would love to see it!
Love listening to your break downs. The best part is watching the true passion you have for music as you react to what you are hearing
Eli, you clearly WANT TO witness the Version from Colm McGuinness D:
Believe me, his Voice and his Range will blow your mind. He is just outstanding! I beg you, I will sell the soul of my firstborn to see you reacting to Colm McGuinness!!!
COLM COLM COLM
Geoff did a great job arranging this. Looks like he and Eli had a blast with the lighting too. Great reaction. Lots of great in depth information.
I didn't think I could love another song as much as this one, but Home Free's new cover of Dire Straits song "Brothers in Arms" takes my breath away. Tim Foust sounds like a pipe organ.
I always love voice play and I love how Jose harmonies with the others. I hope they use him more.
OMG Liz, TY for doing this one!!! Oof i love your reactions so much.. and your face tells so much!!! Oh Blast, i love you!! ♥
Lillith+parrot and a Kraken... I think you might be myself 100 years ago
I learn so much from your videos. Not just getting to see your delight and appreciation for music I love, but also a technical understanding of why the music works so well, what they're doing, how, how it play together... It's not just a reaction, it's an appreciation class. 😁
Now Elizabeth needs to do a reactors reaction to the reactors reaction to this song. There is a long list of reactors that are doing this.
That little giggle when Geoff dropped that first bass bomb was too cute! I love your reactions and breakdown of the vocals!
