    WARNING! CAUTION! I ALMOST DIED TODAY! I have worked on cars for 40 years and am very familiar with many dangers. Safety is always first and I have become even more cautious and careful as I have gotten older. I bought a 2002 Trailblazer with a no crank no start problem and shifter stuck in park position and would not release. My opinion was that both conditions were from the same problem. I never worked on a Trailblazer before, this was a first I wanted to make sure the engine ran first. Turning the key to start with a fresh battery created a no crank no start but all the lights lit up on dash accordingly. I figured that it most likely was a shift linkage problem and the neutral safety was not allowing it to start. After checking the BTSI fuse and finding it good, I pulled the starter relay off and used a jumper wire to engage the starter while the key was set at the on position in the vehicle. As I figured, the engine started right up! I'm very lucky that the vehicle was running rough from it being 10 degrees outside and the vehicle had not been started in 2 months and having 300,000 miles on it. While running rough at a very low idle, I made a serious and VERY DANGEROUS mistake and walked in front of the vehicle and just made it passed when the idle suddenly shot up to fast idle and the vehicle came to life and rammed hard into the building in front of it and was trying to push the block wall at high idle in drive!!!!!!!! The reason this happened was the shift cable is broken and the shifter was in the drive position! The low idle and rough running would not allow enough fluid to pump in the transmission for it to move until the idle went high and the vehicle drove forward!!!! It was 5am in the dark with no one around or awake and no one would have heard me screaming if I had been pinned between the wall and vehicle pushing against me in drive. I most suredly would have died in the cold a slow death. I probably would not have been found for hours! New lesson learned for me in old age!

    Great Video... I have an '02 TBlzr LTZ 4X4... was pulling into garage yesterday, stopped at my usual place... suddenly the car, in neutral, just sort of shut down as I was placing the trans into park (foot on brake)... and that was that. Full lights, hi and low, door locks, can change from driver 1 to driver 2 (computer), door chimes, all fine. There is NO engagement of starter, not even a click... it seems to me that the car thinks it is in 'gear'... but the trans cable bushing is good, the fuse is fine.
    I am going to use your diagnostic and see what gear the car is in... all the way forward or not. Thanks

    Hey cubmancan, curious if you would be willing to tell me some things to look for with the transmission as I inspect a 2005 Trailblazer for potential purchase (private party). Seller says he rebuilt the orginal tranny after he lost all but 1st and 2nd gear... no fix. So he replaced the tranny with a new one and said it drove just fine for about 2 months. Then, the car stopped moving. It starts and runs, and he can move the shifter through all its detents (with corresponding detent display in the dash), but the car won't move at all. I'm thinking that really the only thing that could cause this is a bad shift cable/bushing, and that it rules out the BTSI system, but I won't know for sure till I see it. Is there anything else you can think of that I should look for? It seems odd to me that he wouldn't have checked for a faulty shift cable before replacing the transmission (2x now, actually), but... who knows.

    Thank you for the video. I got stranded today in my 2006 trailblazer. I shifted into park and gear indicator showed it was still in reverse but it would not move any further forward. I then moved it into neutral and was able to shut it off but it wouldn’t let me remove the key. When I turned the key on again it showed it was in 3. I finally fiddled with it enough and got it back home and then the whole thing happened again in my driveway. The bushing looks good and the cable looks ok but could the cable be stretched out or something?

    • @cubmancan
      @cubmancan  5 місяців тому

      Of Course, be careful anytime you are checking this stuff out. Chock the tires and set the parking brake, be on level surface too.
      The cables are pretty strong and don't stretch usually. Check the brackets to see if they got bent somehow, the bushings can be worn, but still be in there. The cable and linkage is almost always the issue on these vehicles. Thanks for watching!

      @@cubmancan it ended up being the cable. It was corroded under the driver’s side carpet and barely holding together. Replaced the cable and all is good now. Thanks.

    I REALLY NEED your help ASAP!!! I've got an 07 Trailblazer...It stalled while I was driving, then refused to start, it would TRY but behaved as if I was out of gas. I assumed it was the alternator and replaced it...that was NOT the issue! Now it's not attempting to turn over AT ALL and won't shift out of park...the brake lights ARE coming on....I'm STUCK and have a VERY important doctor appointment in 3 days I cannot miss and I can't afford to keep buying the wrong parts!

      SAFETY WARNING! BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN WORKING ON ANY GEAR SHIFTER ISSUES! MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE CANNOT ROLL BY LOCKING THE PARKING BRAKE AND USING CHOCKS ON THE WHEELS - AT A MINIMUM THE REAR WHEELS SHOULD BE PROPERLY CHOCKED BUT ALL 4 WHEELS CHOCKED IS BEST. WORKING ON A LEVEL PARKING SURFACE IS ALSO CRITICAL!
      You may need the assistance of a mechanic trained and experienced with this type of vehicle as It sounds like you could have more than one issue. That said, a shifter mechanism out of sync with the actual transmission can cause a lot of problems due to the signals the vehicle's on board computer is recieving and sending. The key switch will only crank the engine over if the actual transmission itself is in the park or neutral position (a malfunctioning shifter or cable mechanism may cause a difference in the shifter position and the actual transmission position.) I would begin by inspecting the shifter related linkages and mechanisms (ALWAYS STABILIZE THE VEHICLE FIRST). You may have a bad shifter cable issue or - possibly the cheapest to fix and most likely- only the grommet at the end of the cable may be worn/bad/disconnected. You also could have a BTSI issue keeping the shifter locked up, but that is less likely. There are steps on other videos that explain those issues. A first-step easy, cheap fix for that may be to pull the shifter lever boot up and try a bit of WD40 at the points shown in the video. As a diagnostic measure you could drill a hole in the side of the console in the right position (shown on the BTSI video) to manually release the BTSI lock -BUT BE CAREFUL TO ENSURE THE VEHICLE CAN'T ROLL IF YOU MANUALLY OPERATE THE BTSI SOLENOID!
      AGAIN: WARNING! MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS STABILIZED AS WORKING ON ANY SHIFT RELATED PART MAY PULL THE TRANSMISSION OUT OF THE PARK POSITION! USE PARKING BRAKES AND WHEEL CHOCKS ON LEVEL GROUND! Most of all, be very careful, get professional help if you need it - Thanks for Watching!
